I spent my formative adult years learning Scottish history, but in my early thirties I moved across the border, and I dare you to do the same. I think once we became a recognised part of Europe, and the Italian Wars begun, we've became just another part of the huge puzzle. I certainly condemn much of what happened in the past, all the way up to the 18th century and beyond, however, modernity was much more important, we were just on the wrong side many of us Scots, though, many of us were on the victorious side, but this helped Scotland become the foremost intellectual civilisation, not just in Europe, but the modern world as it was then known. To learn English history, is to learn about law, commerce and English libertarianism, then you'll know, the English are not out enemy. We dominated London from the American Revolution forward, rebuilding Britain and then America who have done so much for the world despite those people holding onto centuries old feuds they never took part in.
Great video and is certainly concise enough, it is very difficult to go through such Scottish history in a short space of time, so credit to yourself. Having been born and brought up in Glasgow, I'm proud of my heritage, I have my own belief about the Picts as I don't believe they were wiped out, but would no doubt have intermingled and the name would've disappeared much like you have argued. Currently reading the Long War for Britannia by Edwin Pace, something that may interest you, it mentioned how our people (Picts) and the Irish made numerous invasions around the wall by boats and invaded during periods when the Romans were at civil war fighting in the East of the Empire. Something I would love to see your opinion of, however, would be the story of Rome's 9th legion going missing north of the wall. Who knows how true that is, but in Edwin Pace's book 'The Long War for Britannia' he does mention how Picts captured Romans and kept them as slaves. Something I find intriguing. As for all the religious nonsense and division, a sad part of the history I'm afraid.
I really enjoy your videos. I going to recommend your video to a friend of mine because he is from a town near Aberdeen and he wishes at times to visit again. Love this! I am visiting Scotland in the Fall/September to see where my Kennedy Ancestors lives: Gilbert William Kennedy / Maybole Castle, Dunure, Ayrshire, Scotland. My Kennedy's in Scotland actually left for Ireland in the early 1700s. Through Ancestry DNA, I found that some even left for the Carolinas in North America. Next year, I hope to visit Tipperary (County), Ireland, where my great-grandfather, James Kennedy was originally from.
Scotland 🏴 is simply an amazing place to live a free life. It shares many features with some of the best places to live nowadays (imho) like Germany or Singapore. Even if I wasn't born Scottish, I don't see a reason not to die Scottish. I mean, I love haggis and black pudding by default. Scotland is on the right path to become an inspirational success for other countries in Europe.

Trying to learn Scottish history growing up was confusing. The lesson learned, "If it only was that simple."That was answer to most of my questions. I do remember hearing about Pittsboro but Anyways. I hope other people see the layers in Bruce's stories.
As an aside, have you ever read Farley Mowat's _The Farfarers_ ? His premise is that Northern islanders (Hebrides, Orkneys, Shetlands, etc.) were the first to colonize Iceland, continuing on to Greenland and North America; partly in pursuit of walrus-hunting grounds, partly because of pressure from Norse invaders. He makes an interesting case, although the evidence has not been entirely conclusive...
Loved this, and will be watching it a few more times until it all sinks in, plus obviously catching up on all your other linked videos. I'm lucky to have plenty of time on my hands to read books as well, could you possibly include a recommended reading list on various periods in Scottish history, (I know, a very broad question, sorry)...or have I missed that ?
I was always told my Great Grandfather was Scots. I think he was part English too. Traced the last name and it is found in lowland Scotland and Northern Ireland. So Scottish history fascinates me. So does Irish history as my Gran was Irish (at least half anyway). Thank you for your work. Easy to follow and in small enough bites to actually remember. Too long a video and my eyes start glazing over.
Over the years I have met a McDougal and McDonald thru genealogy discovered the name connection to my g grandmother McReynolds. My other Scottish ancestors are Jameson and McNabb. Are there many McReynolds in Scotland now?
I'm surprised that you said Britishness had only become set in the early 1900s. Heard about an Oxford professor in the 1700s that put forward the idea to unite the distinct identities so the Empire could exist. The Irish were included in that, but religious conflict prevented that from happening and by the 1900s the Gaelic revival movement helped form a new identity pre-independence. Do you think the Scottish identity of late has a more independent streak with the rise of the SNP, creating the cultural landscape for a new country?
The 'modern' form of Britishness (and the identity of the Union Flag) has a large element in a forced identity moulded in the First World War to help conscription. National identities were stronger before this.
I'm so sorry, my direct ancestor was William the Great, I am part Norman, I still don't know a lot about my ancestors as kings and Royals, I'm glad your around to inform me. Democracy starts to look a bit false when you look at the make up of the commons, let alone mentioning the house of Lords.
Democracy is the ever changing development to a better future, therefore things pass after being rejected or when circumstances change
@@jamesstewart2176. Very true, but the SNP asked for a once in a generation vote and got it. They then voted to remain with the union. Plus Scotland has its own Parliament something that the English don’t have - we have to share ours with the folks from NI, Wales and of course 50 odd SNP MP. Perhaps once the fair Nicola actually publishes her plans for Scottish independence including stuff like currency, border control, armed forces, the health system, and little matters like pensions then the Scots will understand exactly what they voting for.
I stumbled on to one of your videos yesterday. Loving it so far, keep it up brother!
Welcome aboard!
Well, that was impressive! 11/10!
😘
Love your videos dude, informative, casual, friendly and some modern humour .. keep up the good work …. Slainte mhath!!
Much appreciated!
I appreciate and enjoy your point of view and your historical videos even though I think you and I may sit on the opposite side of the political spectrum.
We can do that without falling out. Don't let the nut jobs either side say otherwise
Hope this doesn’t lead to me being stabbed but this Englishman can watch your vids all day. I always loved history at school but feel Scottish, Welsh and Irish history is only ever glanced at. What I love about being British, is the history and culture of all the nations and people that make up the United Kingdom makes me culturally richer. I feel like I’m a bit of everything that makes up Britain and can love all our achievements and deplore all our mistakes and failures.
Shame on me. I've been watching your videos chronologically but when I saw this topic I just couldn't resist breaking protocol and sneaking a peak. So glad I did. Great video. I'm still chuckling over your terrible jokes. Thanks very much!!
Finally I get it, best explanation ever.
I like you
@@ScotlandHistoryTours many thanks, we need more people explaining history in this way. Not only for Scotland and GB but for the whole world.
Really very excellent. Enjoyed the humour too. 👍
Thank you
I'm in Carlisle any chance you can talk about how Carlisle was part of Scotland and then became part of England. Great Channel

I saw you at Duncarron! Just spotted a thumbnail on youtube there and thought "Hey... I know that face!" Was there when the wood cutting boys were asking if you spoke Gaelic :D Great channel btw, will definitely be getting a load of these videos watched :D
Good work dude, keep doing this, it's great! I hated history at school but love your channel.
Glad you enjoy it!
Awesome video.
Thanks Kevin
Yet another great, entertaining and informative video.
Thanks Euan
Cheers Bruce 😊
I absolutely love these videos. Bruce is some guy 👍
He really enjoy catching up with me because we both wear kilts (only a small part we catch up) and we talk about Scotland. I believe he would enjoy your videos too.
Please do!
@@ScotlandHistoryTours You make my day and weeks as I wait for videos. I was in Scotland in 2014 and due to the Coronavirus I couldn't back when I planned 2020. You giving me more insight then a visit from Australia.
Great video Bruce!
Glad you enjoyed it
I in joy the History much thanks!! I had to find out my family history by my self, all though I had bits & We little Pieces your Presentations are well done.
Tapadh leat Bruce! Great video. Will watch a few times through.
Good lad
Awesome!
Thank you
Love this stuff really good job keep up the good work
Thank you!
Saw you today at Duncarron, should have come talked to you. Love the channel.
Yes you should. Next time!
In a 13 minute video about the whole of Scottish history, that “Hiyaaa!” at the beginning is the most Scottish part of the whole thing
😂
Thanks!
I’m Irish, Scottish, Jewish, and German. I would love to visit Ireland, Scotland, Israel, and Germany one day
I lift a dram of 15-year-old Balvenie in Caribbean cask to your health. I love these videos.
5:50 is a Golden reaction ^^
😂
I feel like I've become at least one of, and I hope there are more of us too because the channel is so excellent, the channel's resident Englishman. ps no stabbing, thanks.
I think there's a few, but you're welcome none the less
I hope you have a great day too (I used an online translator to read your jumper) :-)
Don't know the guy. Jings, another thing on the reading list
9 generations removed from Scotland and still, it stirs a strange feeling in my gut. I'll get there one day, hopefully to stay.
We're all waiting for you
Loved this, and will be watching it a few more times until it all sinks in, plus obviously catching up on all your other linked videos. I'm lucky to have plenty of time on my hands to read books as well, could you possibly include a recommended reading list on various periods in Scottish history, (I know, a very broad question, sorry)...or have I missed that ?
In some videos I've included suggested books
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Brilliant, thank you, I'm working my way through all the videos, great fun and very interesting and educational, top man !
Too long a video and my eyes start glazing over.
thanks man
Over the years I have met a McDougal and McDonald thru genealogy discovered the name connection to my g grandmother McReynolds. My other Scottish ancestors are Jameson and McNabb. Are there many McReynolds in Scotland now?
Again, excellent. I would love your take on Princess Scota (please?).
I like the prom 'real' English analogy.
True
Wow. I'd never even attempt such a feat.
Got to try😊
Nobody wanted to be Scottish until the Bay City Rollers
😂
Broad question. 2000 years in 13 minutes. Go!
Sorry mate, above my pay grade
Great sense of humor
Tell my missus😜
I want to learn the good and bad of my old family. Fun fact though, I'm James and my family had 3 James names, and several Williams, I was told we were carrying the family's 1st names to preserve them.
Congratulations on the footy last night Bruv, Well played. Your Channel has Great content. Thanks for sharing. One Love x
I wisnae playin'😊
" Detail and nuance" Wow!! Got me. Sharin' wi a the baheid's in the Antipodes!!

I do know that my Graham family fought at Colladan, and we left Scotland in the 1800's because of clearings and probably a bounty on our heads. From what I was told. Well, not me personally. I was born in Canada 🇨🇦, but I do know that the Grahams had to flee Scotland, and pretty friggin quickly! Lol
I have to say, your videos are absolutely brilliant. You and I are likely on somewhat opposing sides of the political spectrum, but I would love to sit and discuss over a pint or three. I would bet we could come to common ground. Sad that our governments can't do the same. Please keep it up. I love the equanimity and lack of political browbeating in your historical stories, with a nice touch of humour (the "u" added as a nod to your UK sensibilities). Alba Go Bragh and God Bless the USA (and the Declaration of Arbroath which helped found it all)
Thanks for playing Doug
