  • In this video I’ll be practicing my hovering technique with my Align Trex 470LT Dominator, and my recently repaired Align Trex 550X Dominator. I lost the final flight footage of the 550X due to my phone storage reaching max capacity, but I got some good footage nonetheless. simulator is your friend, things will be easier in real life when you have lots of simulator time

The 550x is badass. Definitely will be my next heli

I own several, make that too many helicopter. Mostly Align from the tiny 150 up to the 700. The 470 is by far the most squirrelly one of the bunch. The 550 is my favorite. I recommend NOT using their recommended pitch and throttle curves. If I recall they want you to set +5 just above where the throttle curve will be at 60%. That’s why the cyclic is hard to control. Add to that they recommend too much negative pitch just below mid stick. A flatter pitch curve of around 75% and a less aggressive pitch curve will tame this heli in normal flight mode and let you practice movement instead of fighting for level. Although it may sound illogical, if you kick in to idle up 3 where you have a straight linear pitch curve and a flat 85% throttle curve it is easier to control. I’ve been flying helis since the late 70’s and am by no means an expert but since we share similar hair colors, it’s good to see you flying so well just getting started, it’s like aerobics except you get your heart rate up without running around. I will say that a computer sim helps A LOT building muscle memory for nose in and inverted flight.

Thanks for the info. I have a flight sim I’ll be practicing on over the winter months. Too cold to fly now. 👍 My throttle curves are all flat 40, 65, 85, and 100. Pitch curves are -100 to +100. Collective is -12 to + 12.

He is correct, higher head speed makes the bird easier to control. I've stopped using aligns throttle curves. At my lowest collective in normal flight mode my throttle is never below 65%. That's what the throttle hold switch is for. Put the sticks At zero collective and hit the switch you'll be happy with a higher head speed and have full control of the bird even at low stick

Thank you! The intimidation factor is gone. I feel more confident flying helis, and I won’t be afraid to get them in the air any longer.

Well done brother! The 470LT is a awesome little heli once you are more confident in hovering and flying around. Compared to the 550X the 470LT will be more squirrely for sure. On the 550X you are more locked in compared to the 470LT because the 550X is of a bigger platform more mass and handles wind better than a smaller heli. Keep managing collective and cyclic with small stick movements. The more you over correct the worst it will get so small stick movements. Overall you are doing freakin awesome brother.

That means a lot coming from you brother. Thanks! It’ll only get better from here. The fear is gone. Onward and upward.

My 550x have a left tilt during the start up, should be the wash plate not balanced I guess

I noticed when u plugged in ur heli..you waited till its stopped beeping to touch it...i did the same thing for longest time...but later realized that its not necessary...as soon as ut swash jumps after the 2nd beeps..its initalized..and it will not effect the heli to touch or move it.

I loved your video! It made my mind to make a choice between buying T-rex 470 LM or Buying T-rex-550 X dominator and I decided to buy T-rex 550 because it looks much more stable when hovering what do you think ? I am right ?

Well to be honest, I’m very new at flying helis. I wouldn’t make your choice based on the 470 flights. I had no idea what I was doing. However, I do think the 550x is easier to fly. Hope that helps your decision. 🤙👍
