Frank’s Model Aviation Workshop
Приєднався 31 гру 2006
This channel is dedicated to my love of building Flying Model Airplanes. Whether it’s Stick and Tissue kits, or Radio Controlled, I’ve always loved building airplanes.
I started building Stick and Tissue kits when I was around 10 years old. My dad was into Control Line Airplanes, and he inspired me to learn how to build, and cover airplane models. He taught me everything I needed to know to get started, and I’ve been building, and flying model airplanes on and off for over 4 decades.
I started building and flying RC Airplanes in the early 1990’s. I was never into ARF airplanes. The kit built airplanes always looked so much better to me.
My favorite kits to build are Carl Goldberg kits. They go together pretty quick, and fly great. I’ll be building a few Top Flite Gold Edition Warbirds in the near future on my channel as well as a few more Goldberg kits.
If you like this type of content, please like, and subscribe to my channel, and share my videos. Thanks!

When I sand balsa, indoors I use a dust collector and face mask. Outdoors I don’t worry about the dust, balsa can be a real respiratory irritant.
Hey Frank, I for real am getting ready to start a 70-in p47 razorback from zeroli. If I had any questions, would it be okay to send you like a picture and maybe a description of what my question is? Would you be willing to maybe answer a question or two if I asked you or is that getting too personal?
You can ask questions. Whether, or not I have a good answer for you is another story. Lol
Ok thank you Frank and from what I've seen of you, you've got plenty of good ideas
Frank, if it ain't perfect it ain't real far off from it. I'll tell you that much. It looks great! I would be very proud of that build. I think it looks fantastic
I hope you got your push rods done. You're filling in that turtle deck where you can't get in there now so if you don't have those push drops done you're going to have a hell of a time with them and you just tired a big crease right down the center turtle deck you'll see it in a minute....
You know Frank, there are not a whole lot of videos out there that shows the plane being built from start to finish. There just isn't. There's a couple but not many men. So good for you man for making one. I appreciate it. Thank you!
Boy it just makes all the difference when you take the time to fill in all the dents real carefully and sand it all back flat and make sure everything's all nice before you ever start to cover it just really pays off don't it? It sure shows in your build and it sure is pretty... Im getting ready to start a 70in. zirrolli P-47 rb.... I intend to use some of the techniques I learned from watching you Frank, so thank you buddy
I’m glad you like the content, and are pulling techniques out to use in your own builds. 👍
My only question about the wings is how are you going to get to those servos if you ever have a problem with them? You didn't make the servo covers removable you glued them in instead of screwing them down. Unless you have some way to get to them from the other side I don't think you could be able to get to them
I’d have to cut into the wing. I was trying to keep the weight down.
Those are awesome servos you're using for the wing. They're fast. They're strong, they're light, and they're small and they dissipate heat well
Is that turtle deck just cardboard? That's what it looks like to me. I can't tell for sure but it looks like it's all cardboard to me, huh? No, it's just the veneer a real thin piece of ply and it looked like cardboard from a distance. At least that's what I think it is. Wouldn't know for sure unless I was in the room with it but that's what it looks like
1/32” plywood
sure missin franks build videos, hope all is well
You, and me both! Lol. I’ll be back at it soon. Winter is coming, and all the yard work is about done. Stay tuned! 👍
hey Frank! where did you get the aluminum spinner? looks awesome
It’s a Dave Brown Ultimate spinner. 👍
beautiful. thank you good sir. Great build BTW
I have an Ultimate 10-300 (Black Box) that I was thinking of selling. After watching your series (most of it) I am not selling it anymore. :) I have noticed your affinity for Carl Goldberg models. Is there any particular reason for this?
That’s an easy question! Carl Goldberg kits are easy to build. They build fast, and the fly awesomely! It’s as simple as that.
Hello Frank! awesome build, I love the ultimate. How can I get my hands on those foam wings kit from Bob Hunt? is there a website/email I can contact? Thank you
Message me, and I’ll give you his number. Not sure if he’s still going them. He’s in his late 70’s, early 80’s.
Alright! I just requested access to the FB group so I can message you over there. Thank you good Sir
😭 awwe man, so sorry to see that happen. Even after seeing the title though, I watched anyway. Terrific build. Splendid covering.
Thanks! Yeah, that really sucked! I found another Extra 300 kit to build again, one of these days. 👍
Very nice! Back in the 90’s we used to put flying wires on the tail because it would crack if you got to Violent with the maneuvers.
Frank, where are you finding these models? From what I can tell, Carl Goldberg went out of business a while back. There are a couple of Tiger 60s on eBay for $500+, but I don't see anyone selling new production kits.
I find them on eBay, and RC groups. I’ve been collecting vintage, out of production kits for decades. There are people reproducing the old kits, but I like building the originals. 👍
Frank, Do we have a video of a flight? Been looking forward to it!
Not yet! Flying season is almost over where I live, and I just don’t have the time these days. I will do a maiden fight video when it happens. 👍
thumbs up!
Frank, that P4 0 flies like she's floating on a cloud. You built her light and it shows she flies really, really docile. I doubt you'll be dropping too many wings with this one....way to go my brother!!!!!💯💯🔥🔥🔥🤙🤙🤙
Thank you! It was fun to build it too. 👍
This model still available? Cheers mate
It’s hanging in my brother’s living room.
This popped up in my feed and made me excited that Frank is back then I notice it was posted over a year ago. 😢
I hsve a Topflight GS P 51 built up wing i bought from someone. How do i measure the washout in the wing tips ? I've read 2 degrees is needed in large warbirds.
The jig tabs on the ribs have the washout built in. No need to measure it.
Thanks forgot to mention the wing was from a kit.
What I know about to this model it's Capable of doing inverted flat spins.. Veary well.. outstanding building skills..
Cool! Thanks!
Thank you! You can find a kit on eBay sometimes, but they’re usually pretty expensive.
Hobbyist enjoy..building as much as flying..remember the glue was ambroid glue ...back in the days of building from scratch..unlike today's owner operator arfs....
Hello Frank. Where can I get such a wonderful ruler and what kind of pen is it? Nice to see how precisely you build
That ruler can be found on Amazon. It’s a clear flexible ruler. www.amazon.com/dp/B0CQCGTZRG/ref=sspa_mw_detail_0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9kZXRhaWwp13NParams
beautiful that lifted off like a cub
Hi Frank, I hope all is well!
All is well. Thanks for asking. Just taking a break on the build.
Very nice. I built 2 of them about 30 years ago. Currently working on a Ohio ultimate 27% kit. It's been slow going.
Where you been Frank? episode 5?
On hiatus. lol. I’ll be back to building in the fall. Been busy with other priorities. Please stand by. Thanks for noticing I was missing. 😂👍
@@FranksModelAviationWorkshop Looking forward to it!
@@FranksModelAviationWorkshop Was going to ask, glad to find you are busy, have seen others with worse problems than being busy. I am awaiting building updates.
@kermitbearden7142 it won’t be too much longer, and I’ll be back in the shop. I’m starting to get that itch again. There’s something about the smell of balsa, and CA glue that calls to me. Lol
What is happening to this build? 🤔
Have 4 models with monokote covering; all else are with cover all Butrate dope & thiner... Similar to sekenight what full scale uses with rib stitchen this process used on 1/4 scale
Very nice job do you have to add any primer over Polyspan befor painting ??
I don’t know if you need to, but I did.
Do you know where I can download the "General Information Booklet?" I bought my kit opened, and I don't have that manual.
Outerzone.uk
Hi Frank, I'm a little late to the party here, but know that there are still people like me watching these videos of yours even 2 years later! got one of these Top Flite P40 kits myself recently, getting harder to find, but got lucky. You have amazing attention to detail, love watching these videos! I had a question about what sort of surface you have under your plans that you are putting your pins into, is it just a big table sized piece of MDF with one finished white side that you are using? That's my best guess from what I can see in the video. Been planning out how to have a nice setup on the bench to make building easier.
I’m using 5/8” Sheetrock on top of a granite countertop remnant. Thanks for the comment. 👍
Thanks for this build series . I just picked this model up it had been hanging in a garage for several years. It's a complete restoration
Glad you found interest in the content. The Ultimate is one of my favorites. 🤙👍
What's the price today
What should value be when complete
Whatever someone is willing to pay for it, I guess.
Maiden ?
Not yet! lol
Frank, many thanks for the inspiration for me to start the build of my P-40 reproduction Top Flite kit. Hope I can make as good a job as yourself.
Just take your time, and pay attention to the details, and you’ll do fine.
Hi Frank , I built this kit probably 20+yrs ago . P40 is looking good .
It was a fun and rewarding build. 👍
Nice shiny glossy finish..is the modetn Way!!!!! That all in good for pratical purposes.... But i will go the extra mile in finishing mine thay way i choose is how its done on full scale aircraft.
Nice show there governor... Now. Modern times building ? Ill stick with cover all simular to sinkanight buturate thiner & dope for covering..because iam an old fashion type of guy & want to preserve my models for many years...!!!
Another Great flying bipe ... Was the phaton 90. ..one of my father's favorite plane did rolling circles both verticle & horizontal...!!!!!
One of many Goldbergs model kits.. My first was senior falcon..note thoe Tinny area for gas tank semi symmetrical wing..not Clark y as a kadet had. Extra 300 put super tiger 3000 on it awesome power...
What size screws did you use for the manual choke assembly?
I used the biggest size that fit through the engine mount holes. I think 10/32.
Oops here's the link to the ultimate biplane conversion. ua-cam.com/video/cDAadc43nvU/v-deo.html
Good content and presentation, but. Sorry Frank, gave up 26 mins in. The music did my head in.
It’s not for everyone. It’s impossible to please 100% of my viewers. I just put out content that I’d like to watch, and if others like it too, that’s great.
Thanks for the tip about lines, it encouraged me to draw just 1 line😅
Sweet video, is the leading edge piece turned up the 5/16 height ?
Thanks. I believe so. Check the side view drawing on the plans to be sure.
Thank u Frank
