Hi friendos!! I want to clarify that Sonic Battle is one of my fav Sonic games from my childhood (I still own it and my GBA!) BUT I haven't played the game in many years. I'm obviously due for a revisit ok 😂
Emerl was created 4000 years ago, Gerald took him and studied him. In Sonic Battle, in one of Gerald's diary entries it was mentioned how there was an accident on the ARK involving Emerl where he went berserk after absorbing a chaos emerald, Emerl was calmed down and resealed afterwards but Gerald wasn't sure how. This is probably explaining what happened during that incident.

I don't think they're re-writting the history of Shadow
Emerl was not created by Gerald, but rather reprogrammed by him and he stayed at the ARK for a little bit
Emerl was created around 4000 years before the current events of the Sonic series by an unknown civilization, he was later found in a deposit by Gerald (50 years ago to be exact) and brought into the ARK, Gerald made some tests with him, discovered that showing power would create a "Link"/"Contract" with the Gizoid and that he was created as a powerful weapon able to destroy the entire planet, Gerald feared for that so although Gerald couldn't reprogram him entirely, the technology of this ancient civilization was REALLY advanced even for the most brilliant scientist of the centuary, Gerald created a passcode to make Emerl calm, by saying "bring hope to humanity" Emerl would become peaceful, GUN and UN later discovers about Shadow and asks him from Gerald and Gerald gives them Emerl instead, before all we know happens with G.U.N. invading the ARK and ending Maria's life
Idk where would this animation take place though, if that's when Emerl was already taken by GUN or during the time Gerald still had him but he went rogue

They're not rewriting history, this anime is based on one of Gerald's journals from Sonic Battle. Every time you complete a campaign in Battle you earn a Journal and Journal 6 is the following:
My worst fears have come true. The Gizoid has absorbed enough weaponry and technology that it has started to go out of control. The resulting rampage resulted in the destruction of most of the "Ark." ... I have deciphered the rest of the stone tablet. It says, "When the Gizoid had learned all that it could, it became a god of wrath, and all was destroyed." The researchers somehow managed to subdue the Gizoid and sealed it away. Luckily, it only had one "Chaos Emerald" installed. If it were to have all 7 Emeralds installed, it might destroy the whole planet. The Gizoid is too much of a liability. I tried destroying its core, but nothing I did worked. I understand too little of the technology that built him. My best hope is to try and reprogram its AI into a free-willed, emotions-based AI...
Sonic x Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings is just an adaptation of Journal 6. Either through time travel shenanigans or Black Doom forcing Shadow to relive memories like he did in the 2005 game.
I remember being interested in Sonic Battle when it came out but I never picked it up. Cool to see Sonic Team digging out some deep cuts for this

@@reggielacey2235 Yes it is, it was actually the next arc for the franchize after Shadow The Hedgehog parralel to Sonic 06 and Rush series. But Sonic Battle released a bit before Shadow's game and the franchize was under a bit of scrutiny gameplay wise.
The Gizoid arc continues into Sonic Chronicles The Brotherhood on Nintendo DS, which was an RPG. And this story connects to the Ancient Echidna's as well, because there are Echidnas from another dimension that uses high end technology and they seem to have created the Gizoid. But again the franchize was under a bit of scrutiny gameplay wise and Chronicles ended on a cliffhanger.
And with Sonic Unleashed, Generations and Colors they chose to focus more on 'gameplay' and more and more. Unleashed was the last one that went a bit deeper but only towards the end.
So yeah its something many dont know about and that is ok as it doesnt make them less of a Sonic fan as its a multilayered franchise. But it definitely a deep cut!

Emerl's awakening and going berserk happens BEFORE Shadow is completed. So this is actually a retcon, but it makes Emerl's story a much more major plot point in Shadow’s beginnings rather than a dismissible Gerald Robotnik side quest that honestly didn’t have much to do with Shadow originally. This is fucking cool and genuinely I'm usually very wary and nervous about retcons since most aren't good However this in my opinion is a good one cause it genuinely improves Shadow's backstory as we Emerl's so this is awesome af!
I'm pretty sure in Sonic Battle, Shadow recognizes him and gets a bad feeling in his gut. I thought it was ambiguous, but I could be wrong.

P.S: Emerls name is pronounced Emel(which I found from Sonic X lmao) I used to say Emerl until I saw him in the Episodes
I'm finally hoping we get some clarity on how events actually went down on the ARK. Between SA2, Shadow (the game), Sonic Battle, ect. The lore has become very muddled. And since most of it has only been shown through Shadow's own fractured memories, a lot of what we know could still be chalked up to Shadow being an unreliable narrator.
He was created by the 4th civilization (Nocturne clan), they were contemporaries and rivals to the ancient Echidna.
