To be fair, why would he care about anyone's life expectancy other than his own? Its the only one he spends time predicting and we saw that when Kizaru landed because he had already predicted he wouldn't die. The thing he did with Zoro was read his immediate death omens (they are probably metaphysical signs that only he and other fortune tellers can read) and see that was wasn't going to die soon.

I hate the “we can’t get into Kaido’s character cuz of Rocks” excuse. From what we know, Rocks was a very brief part of Kaido’s life. His identity as an Oni, Yamato’s parentage, building his crew, etc are all interesting things we could’ve learned without touching Rocks
Yeah, Big Mom got like two and a half full chapters of back story but Kaido got a couple panels as he's already dying. I still can't believe it tbh.
Oda dedicated a good portion of the arc to scabbards back stories which nobody cares. Wano is shit to be honest.
No this different Rocks relationship with Kaido was way more important than those characters relationship with him. Rocks literally was the reason why Kaido became a pirate.

I vividly remember pointing out so many flaws in Wano during its run. People were so quick to call people toxic if they didn't just blindly love every panel of every chapter🙄. But now people are actually seeing Wano for what it was.

Big Mom's crew was overall just more entertaining to see too. BM has criminal masterminds and visionaries on her crew, and Kaido has......Queen???😂
To me Kaido is the guy that is looking for something meaningful to do with his life but all he ends up doing is copying other people because he doesn't have goals on his own and is searching for something to strive for.
When we meet him he wants to die gloriously like Whitebeard or Oden who were remembered and respected even in death, then he wants to be Joyboy when King puts that legend in his head, the old lady tells him to rule Wano so now that's his thing and eventually Big Mom shows up and suddenly he wants the One Piece. But none of that is consistent and none of that feels like anything he truely wanted.
In One Piece pretty much everyone has dreams either on their own or inherited from someone but then few have the means to actually go for them. Kaido being the insanely strong person he is right from the start pretty much had the means to achieve whatever he wanted, but he lacked anything he actually wanted.
That's sort of my take on him after the whole of Wano and it's just not the most exciting.
Oh and to add, I have no idea if this was thematically intended, but now that we've gotten the "devil fruits are essentially a manifestation of people's dreams" idea, the fact that Kaido's crew/army/kingdom were build on fake and inferior copies of devil fruits and thus dreams seems very fitting. Kaido never had a real dream for himself or his people, all he could offer to himself, to King and to his crew was a cheap copy of one.
You described it really well. Overall i have similar feelings of him. Whether it was by oda's choice or simply coincidence.. kaido really ended up being the dreamless villain. Every villain had a function or motivation but kaido was so strong and not to mention isolated in a country from everyone so long , his sense of desire got warped. He inherited other's desires but didnt have the drive to see through that.
@@aritrasaha441 yeah it actually also ties in my view that Kaido and Big Mom are themetically very tied to Zoro and Sanji. Big Mom has all these ideas of seeking out a shallow blood family, overabundance, she is a child essentially never growing up and never being shown any boundaries, always praised as the "good girl" and all that is a complete contrast to Sanji, who wasn't allowed a real childhood, who is considered a failure even by his own father, who doesn't waste food because he knows scarcity and who rejects his blood family as family but still ends up treating then better than Big Mom does hers.
And Kaido is in a way a similar opposite to Zoro, they share the common ideas in regards to strength and becoming and being the worlds strongest on the surface, and there is a theme of death there as well. But when it comes to it Kaido never had to work for it, he toys with death and almost seeks it out, where Zoro resists it, Zoro never once won again Kuina, so surpassing his limits and carrying on their common dream is where he comes from whereas Kaido starts out strong and seemingly never experienced loss.
In the end, while that is kind of interesting, the character of Kaido is however still kind of flat. I feel there is a theme and a measage there whether on purpose or not, but it doesn't help Kaido himself being interesting much.

@@Mooglatan oh yes, certainly. It's actually something I wish would have been more prominent when Zoro and Sanji were fighting King and Queen together for a while. There are maybe tiny hints of it, but I feel a longer 2 vs 2 portion of those fights would have been great there. Because while at a first glance both duos bicker and argue with each other, there is a bond, a trust and a common goal there between the Strawhat "wings" that just doesn't exist for King and Queen. King and Queen didn't care if the other got hurt, they would never really look out for each other and they don't even share any common goals or ideology whereas the Strawhats do and in the end that what makes the crew as a whole much stronger.
I think Oda himself is disappointed with the way Wano turned out

Simple cuz people are superficial as well. He's fat, he's ugly, he's a scumbag and unethical as hell. Willing to commit war crimes on his own men to get a victory. Meanwhile King, flat as he is, appears more honorable. King's still flat compared to Queen. Queen is a villain you can be amused by or love to hate. He's a great parallel to Chopper and Sanji. Him awakening Sanji's genetics and helping him come to terms with his past. Is a lot more gratifying than Zoro unlocking conqueror's and packing up King. That's just goat Zoro doing goat things, not any real development. Zoro hasn't had any emotional moments since he swallowed his pride and begged Mihawk to train him.
Deadass Queen was the only cool villain in Wano. Buildup AND hype😂

I feel that Wano biggest problem, especially in Onigashima, is that it was TOO much. Oda wanted to make a massive ending for an arc with over 10 years, but this many characters, this many themes, this many fights he alone was supposed to do, were just to much for just one man (just look at how underused and sidelined Ussop was)
Edit: Because this somehow managed to get 100+ likes in just a couple of hours, I'm just gonna make clear that I'm NOT against the idea of having characters serve as support, as well as the fact that CLEARLY some characters are/were meant to have bigger screentime
I'm mostly talking about the same point Jay D. made about "If you're not going to explore the character, DON'T hype it" something I feel Oda sadly did with a lot of characters (also, I'm not asking for a Ussop 1v1, instead just a moment where we could see Ussop doing an Ussop thing, like the sniper shots in both Water 7 and Dressrosa, or something more Batman-ish like his fights against Luffy and Perona)
That includes Kaido as a villain too. He’s too strong. He has so many abilities, was so durable, beat Luffy so many times, caused so many mid-arc powerups, took so many chapters to beat, etc. He feels like the final villain of the series, so that now it feels every enemy still in the series has to get significantly buffed in order to give Luffy a challenge. Besides Blackbeard who can hypothetically negate his fruit.

I love how much they dunked on Wano and they didn't even mention the part where Wano was supposed to be Zoro's Whole Cake, but all he got was an unexplained panel of not-Brooke into "I'll become the King of Hell". Plus that exposition lore dump with Robin shoehorned in at the end that twists the knife by confirming that Oda had so much more cooking for Wano but he decided to just say fuck it and give up.

Nah not really. Whole Cake was to rescue Sanji so it would have made more sense to delve into his character more, just like robin. But wano was a culmination arc of punk hazard, dressrosa and zou. Wano was to beat a yonko, to free wano. At least oda shed a little light on Zoro, not enough but at least he tried. It would have helped to insert his bloodline a little
@@davidamadi9837 It was flat out said that Wano was supposed to be Zoro's arc bro. You had correlations of Zoro to Ryuma and all these unfulfilled flashbacks hinting at Zoro's ancestors. It all led nowhere. Nothing that you said was wrong per say, but there was supposed to be much more for Zoro in the arc.
Wano was 100% not oda’s best work on a story and character writing front. And it actually sucks cause Oda could’ve told multiple beautiful and powerful stories and themes. Hawkins could’ve been a story about a man having to find fate in uncertainty to save his life
Yamato, momo, otama & hiyori could’ve been a story of accepting the past, breaking the cycle of hatred & overcoming one’s own prejudice. Imagine if momo had misguided anger or fear for otama because of her connection to kurozumi, imagine hiyori and momo actively spitting in Yamato’s face that she has the audacity to call herself oden despite being kaido’s daughter

Wano was Oda at his most ambitious and that was the problem the man was TOO ambitious for his own good. It got to a point that I personally forgot about oden, I forgot about what the reason the samurai we’re fighting for cause I was more preoccupied with what Oda was gonna do next with the near infinite stream of new plot developments every chapter
Oda blew his load too early with the making onigashima float, cause imagine he saved that for after big mom’s defeat. Oh big mom is down, my crew is in shambles, I’m the last man standing, alright! Lift onigashima, kick luffy’s ass off the island and make it a chase for luffy.
Have luffy chase after onigashima and show the remaining alliance having to hold their own as they’re literally trapped with kaido in this last ditch group suicide of crashing onigashima onto the flower capital
The aggravating part is that wano has the ingredients for the best arc in all of one piece, sadly Oda just didn’t cook with this one

Scabbards backstory is tied to Oden so there's no escaping that. Oden's backstory was literally one of the best things about Wano. So not really. They just didn't give us enough backstory on the villains. @@unggading6990

Jury’s still out on those last three but they’re still currently here and aren’t fully in the spotlight yet. In wano that WAS kaidos spotlight moment fully and had nothing to show for it besides being a strong ass obstacle for luffy to overcome. There’s no depth to kaido though whatsoever in comparison to any one of those people you mentioned, when he should have every reason to as he was a major focus of wano the same way Kuma is right now on egghead.
I like the simplicty of Kaido. That being said, it seems like Oda wanted to give him an actual character arc but then forgot about it at the end.

Oda could've removed Eustass Midd and the other supernovas from the entire storyline and given that screentime to Kaido, he had the potential to be the best villain so far and would've been amazing. A potential joyboy who drank his own koolaid and devolved into an absurdly OP but psychotic alcoholic who hated the actual Joyboy and himself for not becoming a Joyboy being confronted by Luffy's happy-go lucky mentality would've been amazing.
But instead we got a 1 chapter backstory and a rushed ending to his storyline.

@@-Noistering-, You know what's a nice touch about kaido, in the fight, he dodged luffy showing that he feels fear when the attack can harm him, so he prepares himself for all those strong attacks we see him tank. Its like someone trying to gas themselves up before they jump off a cliff.

One problem was there were too many characters. Even Oda couldn't have handled that many characters. The large number of characters made the storyline even longer and the description of each individual character much shallower.
The brilliance of Egghead got everyone to finally tell the truth about Wano
WCI imo had a solid ending
especially because auf "End Roll" Chapter bringing the thematics of the arc to a perfect conclusion. Storywise there were lose threads that sadly still didnt get clarified like Jimbe Crew! but its imo alot better than wano ending

If not for Roof piece Wano would be considered the worst arc in One Piece

Oden's Flashback saved Wano if anything. Roof Piece had a lot of flaws as well.
Regarding the WCI ending, I actually loved the arc and the ending but I also think WCI didn't fully finish until Onigashima. The way I see it Onigashima was the finale to both WCI and Wano marked by Big Mom quite literally coming there so it can be the climax to both stories and that's also why it is so convoluted as it tries to tie together the storylines of not just one massive arcs but two.
Because pretty much every character arc from WCI was brought back during Onigashima: Sanji's struggle with his past, him asking for help, rejecting the raid suit, Nami being a motherly opposite to Big Mom in how they both care about Tama, her getting Zeus back, Jimbei finally joining the crew after the WCI declaration, even Carrot dealing with Pedro's death and the "revenge" on Perospero (look I'm not saying everything was continued well, but it was continued).
I actually almost think that overall Onigashima was a better ending to WCI than it was to Wano.
That’s a way of you justifying the poor writing and that’s fine. You can cope. Whole cake island peaked in the middle. The whole wedding part of it and forest chase is probably some of the worst and most boring part of the whole show
@@mdot1799 I love how "cope" is just the universal thing to throw at someone when you have a different opinion but no interest in actually making any arguments why you disagree. How does WCI "peak in the middle" but then also the wedding is the worst part? That literally is "the middle" both simply timing wise but also where everything before leads into and that then sets up the events of the rest of the arc.
And yes, I like the WCI ending (and the arc as a whole, it's the only post-ts arc that ranks up there for me with otherwise pre-ts arcs), that's not cope, that's my opinion and taste. The ending is arguably rushed and abrupt in parts but it is in a way that actually makes sense for a chase and the Strawhats fleeing for once while it also does tie in pretty much all the plots that were present througout the arc (Germa coming back and Judge insulting Sanji one last time, Jimbei's last stand with the pirates, Pudding's goodbye from Sanji, the Katakuri and Brulee scene). I think the balance of wrapping up plots but also leaving some things clearly open ended because the Strawhats have escaped and not resolved everything on WCI is actually extremely good and not at all bad writing.
To me Wano's ending is a pretty mixed bag and I actually think there is some at best questionable writing in its ending, but that is mostly true for a lot of plots that relate to Wano, because they were never continued or just had very awkward endings. The Kurozumi plotline ending with Hiyori's "pun" and Tama's origin being buried in a barely readable background drawing and SBS. Constantly hinting at Zoro having a likeness to Wano character but then having the answer to why in an SBS once more. Trying to give King a last minute backstory to setup some parallel to Zoro, but King otherwise not having an actual character throughout the whole long ass arc, Hiyori becoming a constant damsel in distress after being introduced as a cunning man-manipulating woman that might not have a strength in fighting but in using information and manipulation to play a part. All of that was bad imho. On the other hand Sanji's whole Onigashima arc with him eventually destroying the raid suit (which just factually is a continuation of WCI) and Queen's character being tied to Judge through MADS so that he can serve as not only a Kaido subordiante but also as a stand-in for Germa that he can overcome, is extremely well done imho, but that's because of the setup that was done for it during WCI already and the abrupt and in a way delayed ending of WCI was brought back around.

Honestly, I believe Wano suffered from a bit over-packing alongside pressure from publishing.
We know from Oda, his staff, and some of the anime production staff - Wano had various amount of content cut and reworked to make way for both Film Red, and to prepare the final saga.
I also think the industry being shifted, along with the death of various creators in the industry, lead to a lot of plans being reshaped and changed as Oda became even more convinced to prepare for a retirement.

Wano literally was my most anticipated arc along with Elbaf and now is my least favorite arc. I went in expecting zoro samurai training, liquor iron ore, secrets of seastone and our crew taking seastone, secrets of poneglyphs, more about zoro and his shimotsuki clan, is he an oni (had theory he was ancient giant runt), what's good with the giant skull and sword, this a million other questions.

Laws character arc at the end of Dressrosa was him realizing that Corazon only wanted him to be free, he never asked Law to beat Doffy for revenge or because he had the D in his name, its a contrast to Luffy who beat Doffy only to grant freedom to the people he was oppressing, and while he was also a D it didnt feature into Luffys own personal motivation to beat him, because he doesnt care about destiny or revenge, only freedom for his friends.

Wano is so interesting to me cuz the difference between wano and egg head in terms of writing quality is so night and day. So many things happen in wano that just doesn’t go anywhere while egg head flows massive plot lines from one part of the world to another. Though there is a lot to like about wano the main plot points sour with time but egg head just doesn’t. I’m so confused by how one of the most lopsided arcs is right before what feels like the best arc since the timeskip
because wanos pacing was straight butt from a week to week perspective. i have yet to re read / re watch the arc in one go so idk how it might differ pace wise

Kaido doesn't just stupidly want to fight, he is also trying to reach some goals. When he tried to attack Marineford, it was because he wanted to partake in the war. If he just wanted to fight with Whitebeard, he could have done that every other time. But fighting with Shanks just ruins the purpose and he would no longer, realistically, have anything close to the impact in the war he aimed for (assuming arrogance that he wins and can still go).
One can even argue from Shanks' perspective: he probably wasn't even interested in protecting Whitebeard (and this was probably also misreported about Kaido), but he wanted to prevent something far worse from happening which could change the structure of the world dangerously or too soon. (Also see how he interacts with the Gorosei...)
He also adds to the pattern of enemies having different imaginations of the ideal world. His, in a way, was the most directly brutal one yet, but not necessarily more insane and potentially cruel than some others. It's just a different structure, and he fulfills that purpose of providing a differently structured worldview. His theme is sort of heavy metal (or Motorhead), shown in almost every way. (E.g. the giant skull with horns of Onigashima.)
And he represents that directness and brutality as a character design, of course. Which is ultimately an enemy design Luffy probably also should deal with, instead of just with twisted and tricky designs. And he goes very well with Big Mom...
Regarding Joyboy: He wasn't interested in it originally, he just happened to have similar "ambition" and strength when he was young, and he realized himself that he's probably just too different. But he remained curious and accepted that there might come a real Joyboy, but that Joyboy would have to get past his ambition and strength. It's not that convoluted or difficult to understand, he was a "candidate", but not really fulfilling the Joyboy role, so he took up the role of a test for Joyboy (while it wasn't really his main goal in life).
The dresrosa ending fight was satifying. Katakuri vs luffy was not only satisfying but was also inspiring.
Egghead also started dragging and throwing in a lot of „wtf is this shite now?“ moments, Oda really hasn‘t been able to smoothly wrap up arcs since FI
To me, Kaido is a cranky old guy. He has no motivation and is just sitting around, waiting for things to happen. I don't think King ever saw Luffy as Joy Boy. He got knocked out by Zoro before the transformation. He has enough honor to not befriend the enemy after losing.

the hard thing about kaido is so much of his story is rocks related i feel. he was scouted by him specifically, he has aspirations of world domination likely shaped from his time on the crew.

That can't be the excuse because we have Kuma an arc later. A character who's beginnings were forged from a major event long anticipated in telling (God Valley) that Oda wasn't afraid to briefly delve into then move away from. we still don't know what Luffy's dream actually is because he cutaway when he told the crew.
The point being the use of cutaways. Oda uses cutaways all the time for anything. We were teased of a full God Valley flashback only to cutaway. Buggy in 1082 wouldn't have hit as hard if Oda didn't cutaway from the moment Buggy and Shanks parted ways a decade ago the first time that scene happened.
Kaido's flashback could've been the same thing. Using Kaido's reaction to things Rocks told him to contextualize why he was in Wano and such.
We can't keep giving Kaido the Rocks tax because Oda has written around such non-reveals countless times in the past. shit he did it with Roger's dream just a backstory prior to the entire raid.
The Rocks ties should *elevate* what we would have learned from Kaido's backstory, not *TELL* Kaido's backstory.

I think the thing a lot of people forget about Kaido is that he didn't just want a fight. He wanted a fight that made a mark. Would fighting Shanks on a random sea on the way to Whitebeard make waves on the world? Nah. Would fighting a defeated Oden make a mark on history? No way. Fighting Whitebeard at the Marine Ford? 100%. He wanted a death the be talked about for the ages, and that shit doesn't come easy

Kaido as a character is so mid and it's not like there wasn't time to give him a backstory considering what they gave to Kuma in these few chapters and he's goated for that.
Wano made me drop one piece. I dropped it during early 2020 and didnt pick back up one piece till wano was basically done. I still barely remember anything from before thwy got into onigashima. Wano was trash and it sucks that Oda was anticipating doing wano so much. I wanted to like it but it was ass.
It was alright, but man…. the problems it had just made it disappointing. This should’ve been at the level of marine ford in terms of its writing AND stakes, but you can just tell that oda was tryna get this arc over with. Post time skip in general just hasn’t been as good compared to pre ts.
You guys REALLY need to watch the videos by HoyBoySpicy on both Kaido and King's characters, he goes on to explore the themes of both characters that you guys are completely glossing over.
I think one of my favorite parts about Wano is that Oda does a really good job of getting us to care about the people of Wano outside of just the royalty the crew befriends.
The moment where I realized this, and where it hardest for me, was the finale of Luffy v Kaido where we see the messages of Wano citizens floating up into the sky as Luffy pummels Kaido into the ground.
Really? I think that's one of the big fumbles of this arc.
I cared for the poor people of Wano in act 1 and 2 especially with the smiles tragedy, then Onigashima started and dragged for so long that everybody stopped to care: the scabbards only cared for Oden, Yamato too, Chopper had to cure this Ice Zombie disease when he could have search for a cure for the smiles, Luffy spent 80% of his fight enjoying it more and more like a stupid Goku, and just at the end, Oda felt obliged to give us another flashback about the whole Wano tragedy to remind us what we where doing here in the first place, and to give an excuse to Luffy to suddenly be upset again at Kaido, out of nowhere.
Even lamer than that, and I don't see anybody talking about this, the citizen of the Flower capital who we are supposed to care for during Onigashima are the same ones that are established in act 1 and 2 as ALL being fucking COLLABORATORS to Orochi and Kaido, actively despising and harming the rest of the country. And these selfish fuckers have the nerves to pray for some miracle to get rid of Kaido, being too cowardly to attempt anything and once they are saved they (and more importantly the story) act like they never did anything wrong in the first place.
I guess Onigashima dragged out so much that Oda kinda forgot he wrote them like despicable pieces of shit to begin with and most of the readers forgot too.
