Metal Detecting Hard Rock With Gold Bug 2

  • In this video, I try out the Fisher Gold Bug 2 Metal Detector on a rock outcrop to see what it picks ups.
    The rock is mainly made up of gneiss and mylonite with igneous intrusions. There are small and large veins of quartz and pegmatites that cut through the rock.
    The rocks contain iron minerals like magnetite along with silicates and sulfide minerals.
    The detector found many targets which is likely due to the high amounts of iron in some of the rocks.

    You need to wrap the cable around the arm. Can't have it swinging loose like that. It should be kind of tight around it or you will get a ot of false signals. Hope it helps you out

      I tried this, it would still sound of but at a lower pitch. Lots of iron minerals in the rocks including magnetite.

    When you hit those targets use the iron disc to check if its iron or mineralization between precious metals

    I think you should detect all the (were water would flow) downhill, the loose soil from your spot. Can use a small plastic garden scoop so you can see if you've got your targets, then detect handfulls from that, by the process of alimination. Either do this till you see the target or until it is a small amount and pan out later. You should get a better idea of what's up thereby what's weathered off. The reverse is used to find mother loads. Thanks for your videos. I see gold !

    That's a nice handy tool you've got there. Did you try splitting a sample and view the fresh surface with a jeweler's loop?

    • @GeoForge
      @GeoForge  5 років тому

      Not yet, a jeweler's loop is something I have been meaning to get for awhile. I have collected a few quartz and pegmatite samples that were cleaner then the surrounding oxidized rock.
      Also, the stone I found at 9:25 holds a large fractured cluster of almandine garnet surrounded by a matrix of amphibolite. The amphibolite is the dark rock I refer to in the video as mafic because it is made up of hornblende and amphibole minerals. They also hold many garnets but this is the largest one I have found so far. I've seen these rocks at rock shops and minerals shows. I'm hoping a acid will help clean up the oxides so its easier to see the garnets in the stone.

    • @Oldpolcat
      @Oldpolcat 5 років тому +1

      @@GeoForge Garnets are a good sign. It would be really nice if there was a showing of "mariposite green" in the mix. If there's an area close by that was home to a quarry at one time...a place like that would be ideal for learning the in's and out's of prospecting. Those are a favorite of mine, when available.

    Geoforge you should wrap your coil wire in tight wraps along the shaft, any slack in the cable to lead to ghost signals and just poor performance, not to mention that the more the cable moves the higher the chances that over time a break or loose connection could develop.

    • @GeoForge
      @GeoForge  3 роки тому +1

      I did that shortly after filming this video. Thank you though.

    Let say if I want to detect alluvium gold deposit, how far (in term of subsurface depth) can the thing detect?

    • @GeoForge
      @GeoForge  4 роки тому +1

      I'm not exactly sure. I have not had a chance to use this detector very much and i'm still getting used to it but, I know that its detection depth is going to be impacted by a few things, the size of the target, the type of target, and the ground your detecting in will all be a factor as well as the coil size you use. Bigger targets can be detected a deeper depths while smaller targets may go undetected unless they are closer or at the surface. You can find UA-cam videos out there that have demonstrations of depth tests with this detector.

    Get some dynamite ha ha jk.. I’m thinking about gb2 or mini 1000 what made you choose the gb2 .?

    • @GeoForge
      @GeoForge  3 роки тому +1

      I choose the gb2 because it was what I could afford at the time and I got it on an ebay auction. I heard a lot of good things about the gb2 especially with the 6 in coil. I wish I had the time to learn how to use it better. It picked up a lot of targets as seen in the video. Most of it was probably iron mineralization but a few sounded like they could have gold potential. I have yet to break up the rocks to see what's inside. What is in abundance in these rock are what seems to be monazite sands and molybdenite in near by rocks. Jeff Williams has some good videos on the gb2 you should go check out and I think he might compare it to the mini 1000 or maybe it was a different detector.

  • @starlightengramA

    I think the way to get ground balance for mineralization density is on ground where there it's known there's no gold. You're trying to tell/teach the machine what a quiet place looks like in comparison to an area that has gold in it. It sounded like beginner's lucky strike on pay-dirt with the first try. There goes another rich guy!

    • @GeoForge
      @GeoForge  4 роки тому

      This was my very first time using the machine and I'm still learning how to use it to its full. Its also very sensitive and a lot of the targets were probably iron minerals but yes, I would say I got a little lucky here. I'm not rich yet until I strike it rich. The real gold is in selling prospecting equipment.

      Gold would run between 16 and 28 with that machine with a very low or no iron content. That high number, is iron outright. Sometimes you can get a jump thats wierd between the 2. In the fields, I'll dig those. Near people or town, ill pass and leave it to excite someone else, probably an ear ring or steel nail, paper clip or something.

      I want to do some digging and this spot is definitely on the list. I'm a college student right now in my 4th semester, and I have other things to worry about right now and I've been busy. Even if I did some digging, I don't have any tools to process the materials to see how much gold or if any gold is there. I'm collecting parts and I have bought some parts to build a rock crusher. So I plan on doing some digging but it might be awhile longer before I can. Sorry to disappoint you but I have dug up other things such as crystals, and panned some micro gold in the past. Ill let you know when I dig this spot :)

    All you have to do even with basic tools is remove the samples with a hammer , put it into a pillow case or whatever and pulverize it into a powder with the same hammer and pan it out with a pie tin from the local dumpster, especially the weathered 'ore'. You don't need $10,000 is processing equipment to do that. If it's sulfides you can current test it to get an idea or send out a sample for assay.

    • @GeoForge
      @GeoForge  5 років тому

      That works or you can buy or make one of those hammer crushers which is just a open tube with a bottom that you put the samples into and then use another pole as a hammer to crush it. I've also been wanting to build a homemade impact mill which I could do for a couple hundred dollars

    Are you just playing? Didn't see you crack open anything. ?? You bypassed all possibilities. Devide the rock..keep splitting till your sure. That detector is made for that ground. Watch more videos on how to fine tune on mineralized rocks.
    That said, I liked the video. Any video is informative on detecting.

    • @GeoForge
      @GeoForge  3 роки тому +1

      This was my first time using the detector and I still have to learn how to improve with it. I didn't crack open any of the rocks for a couple different reasons mainly I did not have the proper tools to break most of it out because the rock is hard, and if there is gold, it wont likely be visible which means the rock will have to be crushed down with a crusher. I have been wanting to build a homemade crusher and I made a deal with a company to help me make some of the parts. Its been almost a year now and I have not heard back from them in awhile. They are busy though at the moment but I imagine they will get my parts finished eventually. If I ever get the opportunity, I plan on collecting some samples from this spot, crushing them and showing the results. I am glad you liked the video, thank you.
