Which is absolutely criminal given he is like one of the most intimidating villain in history!
Must be the same reason they spoil Ben having found and moved the treasure, cause in the book you don’t find that out until after the pirates discover the hole empty and it’s actually a cool reveal.
Hello, post Soviet, Russian speaking citizen here. This narrated bios have all characters "unmarried". The thing with it is that bios is joke - reference to other product of Soviet culture. TV show (series) "17 moments of spring" - about Soviet spy in Nazi Germany's gestapo in 1945. It is very good and popular show, and it gave birth to a lot of jokes and anecdotes, and it had such narrated bios about character in a style of short dossier in gestapo documents

Fun fact: The bizarre character 'intro cards' are a reference to - and parody of - a massively popular Russian TV show about Stirlitz the spy. And I do mean MASSIVELY. Stirlitz jokes are an entire category of comedy all throughout the former Soviet Union!
@@samuraitanner Stirlitz jokes are almost always based around his impossible coverup stories where he somehow finds an excuse for any slipup he makes, including wearing an ushanka and a soviet uniform once, reading a paper while sitting atop a telephone line, driving a tank through Berlin and etc.

Ehhh...I feel like the English voice for Livesey made him sound like a creeper instead of a jolly soul. It's the difference in the laugh. The original VA has a laugh that feels contagious. At the very least, it can lift up your mood. The English VA has an unnerving chuckle.
Thanks! It’s definitely the best way to watch it in my opinion! The translated subtitles inevitably cause some things to get lost in translation, but it’s well worth it just to hear the original voice performances! The actors were absolutely amazing and I can tell they gave so much personality to their characters, even though I don’t even speak the language!

I grew up on this movie in America, being the son of a Russian mom. I have the CD of this film, and, even at the age of 23, I watch it occasionally, whenever I need a laugh. Its one of my favorite Soviet cartoons.

19:31 technically speaking this isn’t a war crime. When flags were still used on the battlefield a white flag (when it wasn’t the French) didn’t mean a surrender, it meant that the opposition was willing to negotiate. Silver does this in the scene where he waves the white flag and gives Livesey and co. the chance to surrender the map and he’d spare all of them which is refused. What WOULD be a warcrime would be if Silver used this negotiation to plan an ambush (a false surrender/perfidy).
so basically in this case the white flag wasn't for Silver but instead the opposition... I see this as another threat, kind of like he was saying "obviously all of you are going to die, so I'm giving YOU a chance to save your lives" instead of "we give up"
The US localization is shorter because they expunged (?) all live action parts, particularly songs (probably because they promote healthy lifestyle and doing sports?). The narration parts are a reference to another certified classic of post-soviet hoods - "17 moments of spring" (a series about Soviet spy in Gestapo HQ)
From the meme to seeing the actual movie, This was the biggest surprise I have ever witnessed of any animated film ever. Dr. Livesey and Long John Silver were massive show stealers. Those two have some of the best voice acting I heard in animation. When the Doc smiles, laughs, and speaks, I’m smiling and laughing with him. It’s very clear the voice actor is having the time of his life. With Long John Silver, I never got to hear the spoilers on his bio description (because I was still dumbfounded by the exercise musical number), so it was a genuine surprise for me when Silver went from sounding polite and scrawny on his first line, to sounding like this stone cold evil being. The most genuine WTF I have ever said for any film. And his threats to the good guys and crew were COLD!!! The action was the perfect mix of cartoon violence and batshit insanity. I was exhilarated the whole way through. Some of the animation was reused from time to time, but it’s forgivable, because the animators made up for it by giving us some animation techniques in this film that were really something. From Billy Bones’s Hurricane sneezes, to the walk cycles of the trio, John Silver, and the pirates, to the night to day transition, to Silver’s Reveal inside the cabin with Jim. This is some damn good stuff. The live action segments perfectly captured Russian absurdism. With lots of wide angle lens close ups, sped up footage, changing from color to black and white to only using one color to show the tone, to even changing the artstyle for the animation. Lastly; the ending for the Original version is just the best. I love that final curtain call of the voice actors involved with the production. We need this more in movies, so voice actors and animators can be recognized for their amazing dedication and talent that goes into movies like this. 10/10 (who knew a meme lead me to this treasure of a movie, and I will cherish it forever)
I honestly couldn’t of said it better myself! Even with the meme, this movie is an absolute underrated gem! Watching this movie and making this video is something I’m going cherish for the rest of my life, and I’m so glad it has reached others that enjoy it as much as I do :)
Regarding the change in animation style. What we see in some static scenes is paper pieces technique -- arms, head, mouth, etc. are drawn on pieces of paper, and moved. That's a lot faster to film than drawing contours on transparent sheets and painting them. (I did the paper pieces in a real cartoon studio myself, in a kids animation course.) Their previous series, 1979 "Captain Wrongel's Adventures" (youtube MRq4qZM8kRg) had actually been filmed in paper pieces. But I guess in the beginning of production they learned of the new, more liberal media policies :) and wanted to make more action, which was impossible with paper. So they switched the technique (probably called experienced people from Moscow studios), but never had money or manhours to refilm those paper piece scenes.
Ben wasn't familiar with Doctor Livsey before. He just decided from Jim's words that doctor is the one he can trust and who will understand his mental condition and give him cheese (that's from the book).
@@samuraitanner making a cartoon based on a story about pirates looking for treasure (from the same author that made Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) has to be a rough task for some companies; but this one got the basic gist on it. Also, I’m not sure if Jim and John’s relationship were suppose to be an important part of the original story, I just think it’s problematic on Jim supposing to heed Billy’s word on John Silver. BTW, Dr. Livsey, Jim Hawkins, and Captain Smollett, are all the main protagonists in my book; Jim being the Audience Surrogate and a Strong Boy to boot, Dr. Livsey being such an Enthusiastic Doctor, and Captain Smollett barking orders with such grit and spit. Also, like most people’s thoughts on Livsey’s voice in the original dub, Smollett’s orginal language voice is much cooler, and it sounded like Rolf from “Ed, Edd ‘n’ Eddy” if he was an old man. One more thing: it’s Skeleton Island, not Skull Island; you’re thinking of King Kong when you said that.

The only reason I thought it was skull island was actually because the subtitles of the version I watched referred to it that way, but that was a translation mistake and I didn’t remember enough about the book to correct it at the time!
If you think there is nothing else similar to this ... then you haven't seen Russian Cinema and Cartoons in its golden years, from 80s to 90s ... when Zoomers of today will find Russian 'Winnie the Pooh' , they will go ape crazy with memes ... same with Captain Pronin or The Mystery of the Third Planet ...
Same can also be said about US cartoons in the 70s-80s when Ralph Bakshi took by storm the landscape with funny political cartoons that today are a time bubble how people where in those times : Fritz the Cat ,Heavy Traffic , Coonskin, Wizards, The Lord of the Rings Cartoon , American Pop, Hey Good Lookin',Fire and Ice , Last Days of Coney Island ... and the Cult live action cartoon movie "Cool World"
8:10 Although the cartoon shows a beam hitting Billy Bones' head, it is supposed to mean that he has had a stroke from too much alcohol consumption, something that Dr Livesey later confirms. I guess Billy Bones having an actual stroke would have been to difficult to explain to younger audiences? However, in the russian language, the word for a stroke is "удар", which also means "a hit", or a "blow". So it may have been easier to show a stroke as a hit to the head.
I discovered this movie several months after the memes made the rounds but this movie is far more than a meme from an animation, voice acting, and comedy standpoint.
@@samuraitanner Also, I would recommend checking out the studio’s earlier tv series “Adventures of Captain Vrungel (also translated as Wrongel)” if you haven’t already. It’s far more laid back tonally than Treasure Island, so it’s not meant to be as hilarious, and I would describe it as “cozy”. It uses a paper-cut-out style most of the time, but sometimes it switches to the crazy perspective cel animated shots in a less polished form than Treasure Island. The series is about a sea captain and his crew who are participating in a boat race across the world, but the third crewman is secretly carrying the stolen Venus de Milo statue with him, and so they’re constantly running into trouble from it. If nothing else, it’s interesting to see the beginnings of the style that would be perfected in TI. As a bonus, Dr. Livesey’s voice actor plays the main villain (plus another main character) and Pew’s voice actor plays the one who stole the Venus, though he’s totally opposite to Pew in personality. You can find an English translation here on UA-cam pretty easily, though unfortunately the audio quality isn’t the best and the footage has a piss-yellow filter over it. I have yet to find any Russian uploads of better quality that also have subtitles, but oh well. The most widely available version does well enough.

Fuckung hell, I love you man. Okay, now that I am less emotional and more rational. This show was directed by David Cherkasskiy, the man, the myth, the legend. I am not sure if that is of any interest to you, but he and his animation team were also behind two other major animation projects, somewhat similar in style. There was a whole-ass TV series "The Adventures of Captain Wrongel" based off of a 1930s kids book about, well, a funny captain in a round-the-world journey. The thing was about 13 episodes long and apparently aired on TV in the late 70s. There also was a seven-episode long series "Doctor Aibolit" (literally - Doctor Owithurts, the soviet adaptation of doctor Doolitle). They are not so memeworthy as this megapiece of a show, but they have some similarities in style and even re-use some animation patterns, if that makes sense to you. The two also have an interesting way of combining live shooting (mostly background scenery) and animated characters for the time. I am not sure if you will ever consider seeing those, but I can get my hands on both originals and do explaination of wtf is going on with then if you are ever curious. Thanks for the work! Cheers!

Thank you for making me realize how unique this cartoon was! I watched it in 1988 or 1989, when I was 6-7 and my younger sister was 4-5 yo. We loved it! We would parody Captain Smallet with his shouts in the rowing scene ("one!-two!-one!-two!") and this shout-spitting as well. As I remember, we didn't get the Livsey humour at all -- only later as teenagers we got the irony. We never had a VHS player so we were happy to see it aired on TV (fortunately from mid-1991 private TV stations started to appear, and they needed content). By the way, I realized I never noticed many of these pirates died -- the one who was shot with a nut in his mouth, or those in the very end caught by Livsey. The cartoon never seemed to have much violence until I saw you pointing this out. There was pretty enough of violence either in Soviet movies that glorified WW2 heroes (they were dead serious and tough), or Western fight movies like the Terminator, or Rambo. Kiev studio had previously made some really original and "weird" cartoons like Alice in Wonderland in the '70s and Captain Wrongel in the '80s. But this one went much further in funny fighting scenes -- I suppose the makers by the time had got VHS cassettes with Tom & Jerry, Duffy Duck or Speedy Gonzales, and tried to make it this way. This much action is very very what was done in soviet cartoons, because this kind of action before Glasnost policy could not get the artistic committee's approval. So now I'm actually surprised they did it well enough at the first shot, without this kind of culture around. But I must point out this would have been impossible without Glasnost policy started in 1987, when artistic commitees loosened. And another thing to point out -- this is very postmodernist cartoon -- no serious morale, breaking every possible norm -- the kind that started to appear in the USSR only in early 80s, from the Plasticine Crow (1981), Last Year's Snow Was Falling (1983) and becoming mainstream since ~1986. Younger generations of Russians often don't get it at all. For me this was the default, and the Western cartoons were add-on. For them it's something abnormal, different from the Disney they got plenty of -- which had proper good characters and villains fighting with each other. (Peak postmodernism in Soviet cartoons was in 1991 -- they're really crazy even to my standards, and TV channels didn't like to show them.) The script actually follows closely the soviet adaptation of Treasure Island, of 1978, IIRC, which was a remake of another soviet movie from the '50s or '60s, which, of course, have no comedy part, but are dead serious and tough. The mixture of cinema and cartoon was actually not rare -- the Hedgehog in the Fog has pieces of it, and same studio's Captain Wrongel too. But in the Treasure Island, it's done a lot better. As a kid even at 7, I did understand this is imaginary and not real, but liked the combination, where the drawn pirate kills a real actor. And the titles speeches were very interesting even to a kid. But I never realized how unique this is. I saw dismissive comments on this cartoon from our compatriots, and myself saw its graphics is rather sketchy compared to foreign analogs of the time. And those who were born in the '90s say this is one of "those weird Soviet cartoons". But you made me appreciate it more, thank you!
@@samuraitanner you're welcome. Couple of corrections: 1. "this much action was very rarely done in Soviet cartoons". I mean you couldn't make a cartoon with characters fighting like this. 2. A couple of words on artistic committees: they were ultimate instance of both censorship and production approval. It was sike thesis defense: a group of management from all departments of the studio, plus someone from the communist party cell responsible for the ideological part. Director & script writer would have to defend their script before the production, and the final work after it, to make sure you didn't film something "anti-soviet" (quite a notion back then). Nothing was banned formally then, instead it was a matter of taste of the (elderly) members of the committee and studios management. By mid-'80s, according to some reviewers, they had choked everything interesting and funny, so the creators in the media industry were sick of it. So the committees were loosened (IDK how in particular) in Gorbachov's Glasnost policy declared in '87.
By the way, this is not the only Soviet film adaptation of Treasure Island. There were two more films in 1937 and 1971, as well as one mini-series in 1982. The film adaptations, of course, differ from each other.

What standed out in the movie for me the most is the fact they did not go easy way of having just characters doing stuff on the static background. There were many moments where perspective shifted during one scenie doing so in very dynamic way - which really shows skill of the animator - I see many current era indie animation studios doing stuff like that during fight sequences as a way to show off skill - like in one of Helluva Boss episodes.

I don't know if anyone else pointed this out, but the title cards that introduce the characters in the movie (about 6:50 onwards) are a reference to the SS files that introduce characters from another Soviet classic, Seventeen Moments of Spring (war film, 1973). The original title cards always have a reference to the marital status of the character ("married, excellent family man"/"not married") as well as a reference to their temper (the word "character" is used in the original, i.e. "Nordic/semi-Nordic character") as well as to their Nazi party membership and other aspects of their biography. "Seventeen Moments" became massively, massively popular and firmly ingrained itself into the Russian culture, so everyone watching the movie in 1988 would have instantly caught the reference. Hope this cleared it up! :D

Funnily enough the singing interludes were added because the studio wasn't given enough money and time to animate more scenes for a full length film. They just hired an ansamble of cool guys to sing and dance about how it's cool to exercise in the morning and how it's bad to smoke. I believe it was also kind of last minute decision

I just watched it and as you said, there's a lot of love and dedication put into it. It's very entertaining in general and doesn't fail on giving you the occasional laugh, even the live action parts (which usually feel out of place in animation movies) are funny and fitting to the feel of the movie. I wish there was a voiceover version in english or a dub on the full movie just like it was published originally (subs work just fine though, let's hope YT doesn't take it down some day)
Carrying flag of truce does not necessarily mean you surrender. It means just that - a truce, temporary or not, for the purposes of parleying with the enemy. Only when you wave it does it mean "I surrender". So no, this is not a war crime.
You are correct! It was more so just a joke for the video, but yeah a white flag can definitely be for a truce! Historically (especially in warfare) it tends to be more associated with surrender and “false surrendering” is most definitely a war crime, so I thought it would a funny bit for the video lol

The point of “unmarried” part is that those “bios” are to represent Soviet police “Wanted dead or alive” ads which were usually hung on the police premises or on the info boards. Every person from USSR who watched it had that gut feeling of smth nasty going on as police is involved

Another Russian young adult speaking here. I wanted to mention I am so happy that this cartoon happend to be popular worldwide, I used to rewatch it almost weekly as a child, it brings such great nostalgia to me. This show is quite true to the book, if we cast aside the fact that most of the bloody kills are replaced by some bizarre and funny fights. For example, Jim does not stab Israel Hands (hope I spelled his name correct lol) while fighting for his own life, but just leaves him hang between the masts of the ship. Though later in the dialog with Silver he says he did kill Israel, because that dialog is extracted directly from the book, just like all the dialogs in the cartoon. P.S. This film director actually has made 2 more cartoons of a similar stile, they both are just as cool, but both are based off of books of russian writers so will not make that much sense for someone foreign. Also, in the novel, Ben Gunn sees Dr. Livesey entering the fort with Trelawney & Smollett, and that's where Gunn asks to meet the doctor. Still not really a clear reason, but hopefully it provides a little more info.

One point here, flying a white flag does not mean you surrender. It could also mean you are asking for a cease fire. Say both sides should be given time to take care of their wounded and get some bloody rest from all the hard figthing. And finally, it's usually flown when you want to parlay. That is, discuss details about how to end hostilities. It's not a war crime to bear a white flag to tell the other side to surrender. It would however be a war crime to use the white flag to perform a surprise attack or sabotage. But no, the white flag is basically a means of saying you come in peace and mean no harm.
You are 100% correct! I just put that in mainly because I thought it was funny and because of how fast the fight commences after they stop talking. But yes it is not technically a war crime at all since Long John’s men didn’t attack while he was holding the flag or talking to them!
The white flag doesn't mean surrender, but it acts as a step toward surrendering. If there's a white flag being waved, they know not to take you out at a distance. And in a way, it was used for surrender in this movie. Just not Silver's. He was giving them the chance to fork it over and survive.
As a person who literally grew up on this cartoon (I'm Russian, and therefore watched it in the original), I'm very glad to see not only interest in memes, but also in the cartoon itself, which is an absolute masterpiece
I live in Kyiv and the studio that created this cartoon is almost near my house. I have watched many wonderful and masterpiece cartoons, but this cartoon is special for me.
This was made around the time that Hollywood products started to flood the Soviet Union. Thus, it contains references to American movies of that time. If I get it right, the pirates shooting the cannon as a machine gun is an homage to Rambo.
I was told that the character bios having "not married" in them despite none of them being married was a reference to a Soviet film released in 1973called Seventeen Moments of Spring. I can't confirm that for sure but it's something.
I’ve read treasure island many times. This cartoon is remarkably faithful to the basic plot of the novel. And most of Livsey’s most chad lines are directly from the novel. Though they did my boy Smollet dirty in this. He’s much more badass in the book.
Glad you've watched it! When I was a kid, I got it from my father on VHS. First I was hesitant to watch it finding it's art old and mediocre compared to American cartoons I've grown on, even being a Russian in Russia. But when I finally did, man, it's fucking nailed it. 😎 The entire voice acting cast are Soviet movie and theatre stars by the way, all are great and famous in their own right.
i really like how intimidating silver is, straight up threatening his own men that he'd kill anyone of theme who try to betray him and in the end just letting theme all die not careing for theme
Saw it and I think it was ok. The beginning of the main animated scenes started strong with not only the comedy but the dark atmosphere which later didn't get better but was just good. First live action segment was funny but then their cutting got annoying and the jokes were getting less funny, animated scenes still got a good chuckle out of me. John Silver had a very intimidating and creepy vibe until they get to the island but he still has his moments with being the main antagonist still being a threat and being awesome. But the final scene before the credits was pretty disappointing.
Like many others in the comment section, this movie was a part of my childhood as I am Russian-speaking with my parents both coming from Russia. I rewatched the movie many, many times, especially the song about how smoking is bad for you. I also had a crush on Jim as a kid, because he did martial arts. Though generally speaking the side asking to make terms by waving the white flag is the one getting beat thus there is a connotation of surrender and defeat associated with the white flag.

They used "Gestapo personal files" to introduce characters there. It would always mention marital status there since it was considered essential for a member of SS to be married and have children. yeah i know, sounds weird but it is a hilarious joke indeed to every Russian speaker. since they mix two genres and settings that have very little in common. You don't expect such thing to appear in a kid's cartoon about pirates so it makes funny.

First of all: Great video dude Second: I don't know if I'm going crazy, but I remember seeing a video similar to this one a year or so ago it spoke more in moreso the same amout of details, said that the cartoon originated from a studio in Kiev, and showcased different scenes. had a title like "The treasure Island cartoon is pure insanity" But for some reason, despite making lots of views and being well edited, I somehow can't find it... did it get copyright striked or just privated ?

Hi. A nice clip. A minor correction though - USSR consisted of 15 republics not 21. I think you confused it with number of republics in the modern day Russian Federation (AKA modern day Russia) which in the days of USSR was just one (albeit the biggest one) of 15 republics.
Man, I'm russian, and i must say, that you literally lost a lot of jokes. Of course, that's not your fault, but there's s lot of "reading between lines" in the Russian version. And its just more funny than English.

Hello, post Soviet, Russian speaking citizen here. This narrated bios have all characters "unmarried". The thing with it is that bios is joke - reference to other product of Soviet culture. TV show (series) "17 moments of spring" - about Soviet spy in Nazi Germany's gestapo in 1945. It is very good and popular show, and it gave birth to a lot of jokes and anecdotes, and it had such narrated bios about character in a style of short dossier in gestapo documents

Ehhh...I feel like the English voice for Livesey made him sound like a creeper instead of a jolly soul. It's the difference in the laugh. The original VA has a laugh that feels contagious. At the very least, it can lift up your mood. The English VA has an unnerving chuckle.

The translated subtitles inevitably cause some things to get lost in translation, but it’s well worth it just to hear the original voice performances! The actors were absolutely amazing and I can tell they gave so much personality to their characters, even though I don’t even speak the language!
Just so you know, Livesey is as much a gigachad in the book as he is in the film. The film is actually quite faithful to the source material.

19:31 technically speaking this isn’t a war crime. When flags were still used on the battlefield a white flag (when it wasn’t the French) didn’t mean a surrender, it meant that the opposition was willing to negotiate. Silver does this in the scene where he waves the white flag and gives Livesey and co. the chance to surrender the map and he’d spare all of them which is refused. What WOULD be a warcrime would be if Silver used this negotiation to plan an ambush (a false surrender/perfidy).

The US localization is shorter because they expunged (?) all live action parts, particularly songs (probably because they promote healthy lifestyle and doing sports?). From the meme to seeing the actual movie, This was the biggest surprise I have ever witnessed of any animated film ever.
Dr. Livesey and Long John Silver were massive show stealers. Those two have some of the best voice acting I heard in animation. When the Doc smiles, laughs, and speaks, I’m smiling and laughing with him. It’s very clear the voice actor is having the time of his life.
With Long John Silver, I never got to hear the spoilers on his bio description (because I was still dumbfounded by the exercise musical number), so it was a genuine surprise for me when Silver went from sounding polite and scrawny on his first line, to sounding like this stone cold evil being. The most genuine WTF I have ever said for any film. And his threats to the good guys and crew were COLD!!!
The action was the perfect mix of cartoon violence and batshit insanity. I was exhilarated the whole way through. Some of the animation was reused from time to time, but it’s forgivable, because the animators made up for it by giving us some animation techniques in this film that were really something. From Billy Bones’s Hurricane sneezes, to the walk cycles of the trio, John Silver, and the pirates, to the night to day transition, to Silver’s Reveal inside the cabin with Jim. This is some damn good stuff.
The live action segments perfectly captured Russian absurdism. With lots of wide angle lens close ups, sped up footage, changing from color to black and white to only using one color to show the tone, to even changing the artstyle for the animation.
Lastly; the ending for the Original version is just the best. I love that final curtain call of the voice actors involved with the production. We need this more in movies, so voice actors and animators can be recognized for their amazing dedication and talent that goes into movies like this.
10/10 (who knew a meme lead me to this treasure of a movie, and I will cherish it forever)
I honestly couldn’t of said it better myself! Even with the meme, this movie is an absolute underrated gem! Watching this movie and making this video is something I’m going cherish for the rest of my life, and I’m so glad it has reached others that enjoy it as much as I do :)
Regarding the change in animation style. What we see in some static scenes is paper pieces technique -- arms, head, mouth, etc. are drawn on pieces of paper, and moved. That's a lot faster to film than drawing contours on transparent sheets and painting them. (I did the paper pieces in a real cartoon studio myself, in a kids animation course.)
Their previous series, 1979 "Captain Wrongel's Adventures" (youtube MRq4qZM8kRg) had actually been filmed in paper pieces. But I guess in the beginning of production they learned of the new, more liberal media policies :) and wanted to make more action, which was impossible with paper. So they switched the technique (probably called experienced people from Moscow studios), but never had money or manhours to refilm those paper piece scenes.

@@samuraitanner making a cartoon based on a story about pirates looking for treasure (from the same author that made Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) has to be a rough task for some companies; but this one got the basic gist on it. Also, I’m not sure if Jim and John’s relationship were suppose to be an important part of the original story, I just think it’s problematic on Jim supposing to heed Billy’s word on John Silver.
BTW, Dr. Livsey, Jim Hawkins, and Captain Smollett, are all the main protagonists in my book; Jim being the Audience Surrogate and a Strong Boy to boot, Dr. Livsey being such an Enthusiastic Doctor, and Captain Smollett barking orders with such grit and spit. Also, like most people’s thoughts on Livsey’s voice in the original dub, Smollett’s orginal language voice is much cooler, and it sounded like Rolf from “Ed, Edd ‘n’ Eddy” if he was an old man.
One more thing: it’s Skeleton Island, not Skull Island; you’re thinking of King Kong when you said that.

The only reason I thought it was skull island was actually because the subtitles of the version I watched referred to it that way, but that was a translation mistake and I didn’t remember enough about the book to correct it at the time!
If you think there is nothing else similar to this ... then you haven't seen Russian Cinema and Cartoons in its golden years, from 80s to 90s ... when Zoomers of today will find Russian 'Winnie the Pooh' , they will go ape crazy with memes ... same with Captain Pronin or The Mystery of the Third Planet ...

8:10 Although the cartoon shows a beam hitting Billy Bones' head, it is supposed to mean that he has had a stroke from too much alcohol consumption, something that Dr Livesey later confirms. I guess Billy Bones having an actual stroke would have been to difficult to explain to younger audiences? However, in the russian language, the word for a stroke is "удар", which also means "a hit", or a "blow". So it may have been easier to show a stroke as a hit to the head.
I discovered this movie several months after the memes made the rounds but this movie is far more than a meme from an animation, voice acting, and comedy standpoint.

@@samuraitanner Also, I would recommend checking out the studio’s earlier tv series “Adventures of Captain Vrungel (also translated as Wrongel)” if you haven’t already. It’s far more laid back tonally than Treasure Island, so it’s not meant to be as hilarious, and I would describe it as “cozy”.
It uses a paper-cut-out style most of the time, but sometimes it switches to the crazy perspective cel animated shots in a less polished form than Treasure Island.
The series is about a sea captain and his crew who are participating in a boat race across the world, but the third crewman is secretly carrying the stolen Venus de Milo statue with him, and so they’re constantly running into trouble from it.
If nothing else, it’s interesting to see the beginnings of the style that would be perfected in TI. As a bonus, Dr. Livesey’s voice actor plays the main villain (plus another main character) and Pew’s voice actor plays the one who stole the Venus, though he’s totally opposite to Pew in personality.
You can find an English translation here on UA-cam pretty easily, though unfortunately the audio quality isn’t the best and the footage has a piss-yellow filter over it. I have yet to find any Russian uploads of better quality that also have subtitles, but oh well. The most widely available version does well enough.

The cartoon has a lot of slapstick, but the plot is almost beat for beat true to the book.

Okay, now that I am less emotional and more rational. This show was directed by David Cherkasskiy, the man, the myth, the legend. I am not sure if that is of any interest to you, but he and his animation team were also behind two other major animation projects, somewhat similar in style. There was a whole-ass TV series "The Adventures of Captain Wrongel" based off of a 1930s kids book about, well, a funny captain in a round-the-world journey. The thing was about 13 episodes long and apparently aired on TV in the late 70s.
There also was a seven-episode long series "Doctor Aibolit" (literally - Doctor Owithurts, the soviet adaptation of doctor Doolitle). They are not so memeworthy as this megapiece of a show, but they have some similarities in style and even re-use some animation patterns, if that makes sense to you. The two also have an interesting way of combining live shooting (mostly background scenery) and animated characters for the time. I am not sure if you will ever consider seeing those, but I can get my hands on both originals and do explaination of wtf is going on with then if you are ever curious.

I grew up on this cartoon. It is dope to see people uncover this precious treasure for the first time
Thank you for making me realize how unique this cartoon was! I watched it in 1988 or 1989, when I was 6-7 and my younger sister was 4-5 yo. We loved it! We would parody Captain Smallet with his shouts in the rowing scene ("one!-two!-one!-two!") and this shout-spitting as well. As I remember, we didn't get the Livsey humour at all -- only later as teenagers we got the irony. We never had a VHS player so we were happy to see it aired on TV (fortunately from mid-1991 private TV stations started to appear, and they needed content).
By the way, I realized I never noticed many of these pirates died -- the one who was shot with a nut in his mouth, or those in the very end caught by Livsey. The cartoon never seemed to have much violence until I saw you pointing this out. There was pretty enough of violence either in Soviet movies that glorified WW2 heroes (they were dead serious and tough), or Western fight movies like the Terminator, or Rambo.
Kiev studio had previously made some really original and "weird" cartoons like Alice in Wonderland in the '70s and Captain Wrongel in the '80s. But this one went much further in funny fighting scenes -- I suppose the makers by the time had got VHS cassettes with Tom & Jerry, Duffy Duck or Speedy Gonzales, and tried to make it this way. This much action is very very what was done in soviet cartoons, because this kind of action before Glasnost policy could not get the artistic committee's approval. So now I'm actually surprised they did it well enough at the first shot, without this kind of culture around.
But I must point out this would have been impossible without Glasnost policy started in 1987, when artistic commitees loosened. And another thing to point out -- this is very postmodernist cartoon -- no serious morale, breaking every possible norm -- the kind that started to appear in the USSR only in early 80s, from the Plasticine Crow (1981), Last Year's Snow Was Falling (1983) and becoming mainstream since ~1986. Younger generations of Russians often don't get it at all. For me this was the default, and the Western cartoons were add-on. For them it's something abnormal, different from the Disney they got plenty of -- which had proper good characters and villains fighting with each other. (Peak postmodernism in Soviet cartoons was in 1991 -- they're really crazy even to my standards, and TV channels didn't like to show them.)
The script actually follows closely the soviet adaptation of Treasure Island, of 1978, IIRC, which was a remake of another soviet movie from the '50s or '60s, which, of course, have no comedy part, but are dead serious and tough.
The mixture of cinema and cartoon was actually not rare -- the Hedgehog in the Fog has pieces of it, and same studio's Captain Wrongel too. But in the Treasure Island, it's done a lot better. As a kid even at 7, I did understand this is imaginary and not real, but liked the combination, where the drawn pirate kills a real actor. And the titles speeches were very interesting even to a kid. But I never realized how unique this is.
I saw dismissive comments on this cartoon from our compatriots, and myself saw its graphics is rather sketchy compared to foreign analogs of the time. And those who were born in the '90s say this is one of "those weird Soviet cartoons". But you made me appreciate it more, thank you!

1. "this much action was very rarely done in Soviet cartoons". I mean you couldn't make a cartoon with characters fighting like this.
2. A couple of words on artistic committees: they were ultimate instance of both censorship and production approval. It was sike thesis defense: a group of management from all departments of the studio, plus someone from the communist party cell responsible for the ideological part. Director & script writer would have to defend their script before the production, and the final work after it, to make sure you didn't film something "anti-soviet" (quite a notion back then). Nothing was banned formally then, instead it was a matter of taste of the (elderly) members of the committee and studios management. By mid-'80s, according to some reviewers, they had choked everything interesting and funny, so the creators in the media industry were sick of it. So the committees were loosened (IDK how in particular) in Gorbachov's Glasnost policy declared in '87.
By the way, this is not the only Soviet film adaptation of Treasure Island. There were two more films in 1937 and 1971, as well as one mini-series in 1982. The film adaptations, of course, differ from each other.

Innovative cartoon for its time, the first 3D cartoon only drawn by hand.
What standed out in the movie for me the most is the fact they did not go easy way of having just characters doing stuff on the static background. There were many moments where perspective shifted during one scenie doing so in very dynamic way - which really shows skill of the animator - I see many current era indie animation studios doing stuff like that during fight sequences as a way to show off skill - like in one of Helluva Boss episodes.

I don't know if anyone else pointed this out, but the title cards that introduce the characters in the movie (about 6:50 onwards) are a reference to the SS files that introduce characters from another Soviet classic, Seventeen Moments of Spring (war film, 1973). The original title cards always have a reference to the marital status of the character ("married, excellent family man"/"not married") as well as a reference to their temper (the word "character" is used in the original, i.e. "Nordic/semi-Nordic character") as well as to their Nazi party membership and other aspects of their biography.
"Seventeen Moments" became massively, massively popular and firmly ingrained itself into the Russian culture, so everyone watching the movie in 1988 would have instantly caught the reference. Hope this cleared it up! :D

Funnily enough the singing interludes were added because the studio wasn't given enough money and time to animate more scenes for a full length film. They just hired an ansamble of cool guys to sing and dance about how it's cool to exercise in the morning and how it's bad to smoke. I believe it was also kind of last minute decision

Facts!
I just watched it and as you said, there's a lot of love and dedication put into it. It's very entertaining in general and doesn't fail on giving you the occasional laugh, even the live action parts (which usually feel out of place in animation movies) are funny and fitting to the feel of the movie.
I wish there was a voiceover version in english or a dub on the full movie just like it was published originally (subs work just fine though, let's hope YT doesn't take it down some day)
Carrying flag of truce does not necessarily mean you surrender. It means just that - a truce, temporary or not, for the purposes of parleying with the enemy. Only when you wave it does it mean "I surrender". So no, this is not a war crime.
You are correct! It was more so just a joke for the video, but yeah a white flag can definitely be for a truce! Historically (especially in warfare) it tends to be more associated with surrender and “false surrendering” is most definitely a war crime, so I thought it would a funny bit for the video lol

@@samuraitanner there was three cartoons by David Cherkassky with similar style and animation: 1979 Adventures of Captain Wrongel, 1984 Doctor Aybolit and 1988 Treasure Island. You can actually see how skills and budget grows with each cartoon and cutout animation is more and more replaced with proper cel animation

The point of “unmarried” part is that those “bios” are to represent Soviet police “Wanted dead or alive” ads which were usually hung on the police premises or on the info boards. Every person from USSR who watched it had that gut feeling of smth nasty going on as police is involved
I recommend watching Doctor Aibolit by the same authors, also in the original with English subtitles.

Another Russian young adult speaking here. I wanted to mention I am so happy that this cartoon happend to be popular worldwide, I used to rewatch it almost weekly as a child, it brings such great nostalgia to me.
This show is quite true to the book, if we cast aside the fact that most of the bloody kills are replaced by some bizarre and funny fights. For example, Jim does not stab Israel Hands (hope I spelled his name correct lol) while fighting for his own life, but just leaves him hang between the masts of the ship. Though later in the dialog with Silver he says he did kill Israel, because that dialog is extracted directly from the book, just like all the dialogs in the cartoon.
P.S.
This film director actually has made 2 more cartoons of a similar stile, they both are just as cool, but both are based off of books of russian writers so will not make that much sense for someone foreign. Also, in the novel, Ben Gunn sees Dr. Livesey entering the fort with Trelawney & Smollett, and that's where Gunn asks to meet the doctor. Still not really a clear reason, but hopefully it provides a little more info.

You are 100% correct! I just put that in mainly because I thought it was funny and because of how fast the fight commences after they stop talking. But yes it is not technically a war crime at all since Long John’s men didn’t attack while he was holding the flag or talking to them!
The white flag doesn't mean surrender, but it acts as a step toward surrendering. If there's a white flag being waved, they know not to take you out at a distance.
And in a way, it was used for surrender in this movie. Just not Silver's. He was giving them the chance to fork it over and survive.

This was made around the time that Hollywood products started to flood the Soviet Union. Thus, it contains references to American movies of that time. If I get it right, the pirates shooting the cannon as a machine gun is an homage to Rambo.

I’ve read treasure island many times. This cartoon is remarkably faithful to the basic plot of the novel. And most of Livsey’s most chad lines are directly from the novel.
Though they did my boy Smollet dirty in this. He’s much more badass in the book.

When I was a kid, I got it from my father on VHS. First I was hesitant to watch it finding it's art old and mediocre compared to American cartoons I've grown on, even being a Russian in Russia. But when I finally did, man, it's fucking nailed it. 😎
The entire voice acting cast are Soviet movie and theatre stars by the way, all are great and famous in their own right.
i really like how intimidating silver is, straight up threatening his own men that he'd kill anyone of theme who try to betray him and in the end just letting theme all die not careing for theme
Saw it and I think it was ok. The beginning of the main animated scenes started strong with not only the comedy but the dark atmosphere which later didn't get better but was just good. First live action segment was funny but then their cutting got annoying and the jokes were getting less funny, animated scenes still got a good chuckle out of me. John Silver had a very intimidating and creepy vibe until they get to the island but he still has his moments with being the main antagonist still being a threat and being awesome. But the final scene before the credits was pretty disappointing.

Like many others in the comment section, this movie was a part of my childhood as I am Russian-speaking with my parents both coming from Russia. I rewatched the movie many, many times, especially the song about how smoking is bad for you. I also had a crush on Jim as a kid, because he did martial arts. I loved it a lot as a kid, and this video gave me a lot of nostalgia!! I will probably rewatch the movie again, and thank you for recommending it to non-Russian-speakers

7:04 this bio things is a reference to a classic soviet spy movie "Seventeen Moments of Spring". It was about a soviet spy serving in Gestapo during WWII. They used "Gestapo personal files" to introduce characters there. It would always mention marital status there since it was considered essential for a member of SS to be married and have children. yeah i know, sounds weird but it is a hilarious joke indeed to every Russian speaker. since they mix two genres and settings that have very little in common. You don't expect such thing to appear in a kid's cartoon about pirates so it makes funny.
The only version of this film I watched was a Full length TF2 Dub of the Entire Movie 😂😂😂

Hi. A nice clip. A minor correction though - USSR consisted of 15 republics not 21. I think you confused it with number of republics in the modern day Russian Federation (AKA modern day Russia) which in the days of USSR was just one (albeit the biggest one) of 15 republics.
