I love that you decided to make the main character as a dog. Already wishlisted BUMBI for a long time now but I am certainly glad that you made an upgrade for it, cause honestly, I was still hesitant on whether I will actually buy it or not, but now I will really buy it ❤
This is a top tier devlog. Great writing and superb editing. Sorry to hear about your loss :( I'm glad you were able to honor your dog through your game.
The last screenshot you showed at the end with the art from jelly car worlds would be an amazing addition to the art style. I definitely recommend adding it!
Been a game developer for 7 years and never released a paid game? Come back to me at 25 years... I - I really should try and release something commercially ಠ_ಠ Edit: Funny enough, I'm really enjoying the low ceiling requirements for publishing a Playdate game (like, expectations aren't huge; games are meant to be short experiences). Takes a lot of the stress out of it. Might end up publishing on that platform first.
You were very resilient, not everyone has the ability to analyze feedback and use it constructively and intelligently. I imagine it is exhausting, especially because you have to filter what is really relevant or not, there will always be haters for anything that is built.
1:55 Right, its important to have at bare minimum a game that you yourself like (in your case the art style). This was a good decision, the game looks much better now!
Unrelated to the video's topic, but gotta admit your videos are pretty well made and entertaining! I've been watching you since the past few days(💀) and you might just be my next favourite creator. Subscribed☝🏻🤓
Superb! Very honest, in fact more open and honest than most developers would normally be. I agree that the dog artwork and adjustments have def improved the look and feel of the game. As someone who is not an artist and probably needs to hire a character designer myself could you possibly give an order of cost to indicate how much getting a basic character with animations might cost? Being quite poor I don't want to be ripped off; I also don't want to insult the artists with too low an offer whilst having higher expectations! Good luck.
Well usually the artist will give you a rate. I've seen from $20-$40 per animation being normal. Sometimes if you buy a lot of animations it can be lower cost per animation. So a few hundred dollars depending on how many animations you need and it's detail.
You have amazing game dev skills AND teaching skills at the same time and also that calm voice with subtile humor makes watching your videos a bless! Not to speak, but from a male perspective, you are quite.. pleasant to the eye (to not say attractive directly :D ), so please continue the tutorials, ignore the haters (but check on constructive critics) and.. we are waiting for a new wave of Unity 6 stuff from you! As a motivation: - make DOTS/BurstCompiler + GameObjects pathfinding (the check of every enemy for the positiong of the player and calculation of A* should be a Burst compiler job) - Drag and Drop events with the now directly built in Input System, which can be set to work soooo easy now. Your older Input System video is one of the best on youtube - Updated tilemaps + tile brush and palette video - Random generatio of bigger tilemaps and optimized for mobile - Finishing and publishing a game on Play Store with Unity 6
Great video, the game looks much better and fun, i think adding textures like the last screenshot you showed is gonna make it look even better. It's wishlisted!
Great video. Shows you can make a game just by... well making a game. I know a lot of people who get stuck in tutorial hell thinking they need to know every function of a game engine or how to model/rig/animate/code perfectly. Problem with that approach is following tutorials is often not as rewarding and more of a chore. Best way to be a game dev is to actually make a game and just learn as you go.
Excited to see what you do with the background art like you quickly shared at the end! I think the style you showed looks great! Looking forward to seeing the game develop!
This video is so relatable! I've only been seriously attempting game dev for about a month now but the spaghetti code, hacky solutions, and not being able to please everyone are already sounding pretty familiar. I also think it's really sweet that the game is dedicated to your dog - I have a senior dog of my own and I don't know exactly how long he has left, but I'll almost certainly dedicate my first game to him for being my best buddy.
I really don’t want to be mean but it looks like a flash game made by a kid now the dog IS very good, it’s just that the other assets don’t mix well with the dog in my opinion
The new look is awesome. I also liked the idea of having different art styles in each level or each world. Like a crayon world, a digital world, I don't know. Keep up Sam!!!
Bumbi is such a cute word lol dogs are the best, ours had damaged her back from landing badly after a jump and it took her half a year to be able to walk again but we got her an awesome dog pram so we can still bring her on forest walks with us. She never misses out haha well done on your game, surprisingly relatable about the spaghetti code. Always try to find ways of making your values dynamic and easily editable for future proofing. Good luck with your next one!
The Game looks much better, believe me. It needs some more refinements like detailed graphics, interactions, maybe even other characters in the world imo. Also you might want to rework the logo so it sticks better. You're doing really great, and Negative feedback is the best feedback you can get.
I looked at the steam page. It kind of reminds me of one of those old flash games I used to play like 20 years ago in my web browser. That's what the artwork makes me think of. I wish listed it. I also am a game developer. It's not my job but more my hobby. Anyways I do most of my work in Unity. I've been working in Unity for 6 years but even before that I've been learning/working on games. I started around 2001 with QBASIC and just made text based games. Later I learned the draw function and made animations but didn't make a game doing it that way. I never actually started with a real game engine until 2018 but in the mid 2000's I did do some stuff with RPG maker. In 2021 I briefly worked for Procedural Worlds and in 2022 I released a game asset called Urban Architect. I also have never made a paid game.
1:10 Look ma, I'm famous! I added Bumbi to my wishlist to show support. The game looks better every time I see it. I like when games are bright and colorful. Good Job

I think your game looks fun, and also that fixing the colours would make a huge impact on aesthetics. The lava level in the trailer works a lot better than the grassy/forest level since the colours don't clash there. Making the forest hazards a more neutral colour might work; maybe adding some animation to them in order to indicate that they're hazards instead of the red - like making them shake slightly in place
Great improvements! I wouldn't take the hate to heart. Some people will hate anything. However, I would differentiate the hate from actual criticism. People can say your game looks ugly and that's it but the ones that give you an explanation to why it looks ugly can be helpful. Maybe it's shading, color choice, certain details, etc.
Your dog animation and other changes truly make a difference! Nice one! 😄 Btw well done for coping with so many negative comments... I find it difficult dealing with even 1 negative comment on my videos
Since i saw the updated art on steam, it actually became one of my most anticipated games this year (i mean don't release it anywhere near the Elden Ring DLC but still). I'm positively drawn in by the Fancy Pants nostalgia mixed with nightmarish Mario Maker-esque obstacles, not to mention the very real lack of decent canine-based platformers on the market.
Thank you so much!! I'm still planning on changing the art a bit to add more personality/make it match a little more, but I think it'll be a great change!
I feel like abstract backgrounds works better (like jelly world) than current sprites that lacks style or artistic direction, but the dog has a lot of cool animations (the ones sliding are particularly great).
