- Lighting Our Christmas Tree 🎄 & Hai Onn Restaurant Food Vlog | Hainanese Delights
It’s that time of year again-Christmas is around the corner, and we finally set up our family Christmas tree for Advent! Join us as we light up our tree and share a bit of festive joy for the season.
For this week’s food vlog, we visited Hai Onn Restaurant on Burmah Road, a spot many of you recommended after my last post about Hainanese food. This unassuming kopitiam, with its nostalgic charm, is a throwback to Penang’s culinary past.
Here’s what we had:
🍗 Hainanese Chicken Chop - Perfectly crispy, flavorful, and comforting.
🍜 Hailam Mee - A hearty noodle dish with rich flavors.
🥟 Choon Pneah (Spring Rolls) - Crispy and delicious, a must-try!
☕ Hainanese Coffee - A smooth and aromatic finish to the meal.
The food was absolutely amazing, and the ambiance added to the experience. Watch the video to see why this place is a hidden gem!
Let us know in the comments if you’ve been to Hai Onn or if you have any other recommendations for great Hainanese food. Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe for more family adventures and food reviews!

This is what the Christmas spirit should be. Whole family getting together to set up the tree. Excellent sharing.
Always family first bro... that's my motto!

Adorable Isaac is very creative and playful knows how to bring a smile to others. Using funny faces to get sone food from Dad, 😂
ahha... Isaac is so cute :)
LOL cheeky fella. He said he wasn't hungry, later saw us eat he wanted some.
Horray keep up the christmas spirit!
Happiest time of the year!
Nice xmas tree and delicious noodles 😊
Thank you very much!
Another place added to places to eat when I'm next in Penang! Also, love Isaac's Crimbo shirt 🎄 (and the cat in the seat watching all the hoomans set up the Crimbo Tree!)
LOL I love this time of year... Christmas mood coming!
@@pishedbloke I have a new favourite part of the video: Isaac spinning round and round on the spot whilst his Mum and sisters are all busy setting up and decorating the tree 😄
@@YSL609 hahahaha he didn't help at all!
There are many versions of Hainanese food like western style that the westerners adore and the traditional style we love.
@@yingchunchoy4333 yeah this original style now very hard to find
Thank you for this vlog. I definitely will try Hai Onn on my next trip to Penang!
Come come come... so much wonderful food around this area, the center of Georgetown
Another great video. Happy Christmas to you and your family. Ive been watching your great vids and noticed that you've put on quite a fair bit...take care & good health. Keep up the great vids
Hahahaha my weight has been going up and down lah. My peak was about 127kg. Now am about 120kg. Can still go down a bit, must prepare before Christmas.
Blessed Christmas and Good Health Always
Happy Christmas!!! Let's enjoy the time up to Christmas Day
Nothing like old school, still as authentic.
Went back again today and tried a few other dishes. I also like their char tang hoon!
And if you're looking for old school stuff like that, try also Fok Kee kedai kopi. I don't know much about Hakkaness cuisine but that's what they say they are serving. Definitely must try young ginger and galangal steam fish. Enjoy
Bring back old memories.
The roti bak kua that used to sold at REX theatre, now is at Gurney Drive. His son is taking over the business.
@@TommyGan-h1f ohhhh thanks for telling me! Must go and eat
Was my fav in my younger days…
I liked the background music altogether🎉 and nothing like a good Xmas prep with a tree
Somehow Christmas carols just set the mood for the occassion!
Simply love Hainanese food. Very delicious 😋😋😋
Yes indeed!!! 😃
the hainanese chicken chop look damn good... if it come with bread on the sauce this will be 110% perfect👍good find.
This is very nice.... I liked the roasted potato, only half... maybe can order extra next time!
Lovely family activity setting up the Christmas tree. Guess it is always fun to set up but when it comes to taking it down.... sonetimes the tree stays up till end Jan haha.
Food at Hai Onn looks good. Would definitely give it a try one day. Isaac is sooooooooo cute with his 😁 face
Can park along Macalister Lane or Kinta Street bro... try and let me know your opinion
@pishedbloke Thanks Bro. Will post back here after trying
yum 😋 looks so delicious. njoy with ur children... hope Isaac is doing well now
He is very well, thank you!
😊❤ delicious food...60s 70s time good old days.
I really hope uncle will pass don the skills and recipes to the next generation
Food looks great, old Hainanese places like tis usually make an excellent mix grill as well.
FYI, since u mentioned Komtar being nearby there's another Hainanese joint dat serves assam pedas with white pomfret on a 1 way street with impossible parking within walking distance from Komtar, if it's still there! Rare, with very nice stir fry dishes for lunch.
Merry Christmas my dear fellow with warm regards to the family!
Hohoho... 🎉🍻
Ohhhh if you remember the name please let me know! I will go and try for sure.
@pishedbloke
Sorry, I can't it was a long time ago 😬
Good morning bro,
Congratulations for getting the honour of putting the " 🌟 " on the decorated Christmas Tree for 2024 Celebration 🎉
I usually prefer the Hainanese Chicken Chop with tomato sauce 😋
Have a great day and stay safe.
Hahaha you saw that! Yeah usually I am the "star" guy... the kids love decorating the tree. Somebody said tomato sauce is just Western food chicken chop... not Hainanese anymore. Both also I will eat. Another western food I like is at Mt. Erskine.
Wow hailam kia like me must try this hailam mee soon!
@@yiksengheng8684 ya man... I am gonna cook this noodles tonight for my family.
Goodmorning bro. I notice that everyone has a new watch. Anyway Merry Christmas to you and your family. God bless.❤
Bro your eyes are super sharp.. LOL Merry Christmas bro... soon!
Tq for introducing this shop, passed thru here last week after having Swato Lane ais kacang, always stayed around this area whenever in Penang, tried most foods here(Hutton lane roti canai/bakar, Siam Rd mee goreng, ais kacang @New world park, Penang rd.cendol, Chowrasta market) but never try this Hailam foods b4🤤
Yes yes next trip go and try. I am planning to go makan again, so many other dishes on the menu!
Blessing ... Take are get ready for Christmas. 2 weeks from today. Org kata tak kalut prepare awal.❤❤
😁😁😁 Hahahaha betoi betoi.... but anytime of the year, we must eat!
If time permits, do family trip to Taiping. Quite a fun place to go if not raining. Lovely lake. Zoo worth it.
I think they went there few months ago ..
I love Taiping!!! Yes I have been there a few times, including some cycling trips we took the train to Kamunting station and cycled to Kuala Kurau and also Kuala Sepetang!
@@pishedbloke that's absolutely fun. your current video was the reason I commented re Taiping. Had chicken chop at their century old kopitiam called Yat Sun.
@jenshaunwong1916 yes nice place... the noodles there is also good.
Although the taste was run out a bit from the old days but this is the real Hainanese chicken chop style. Not that kind of red and orange color gravy like today the new generation did. You also can taste the same Hainanese chicken chop in Ipoh & Kedah too, but in Kedah one adds some black pepper. Unfortunately, no one will continue if the senior is gone, like the Loke Thye Kee opposite the Hai Onn, the best Hainanese chicken chop ever, has gone.
Correct Bro 100% agreed. Loke Thye Kee above was one of the authentic delicious restaurant those time.
Loke Thye Kee refurbished and reopened but closed shop just after few months..😢😞
@ reopened but not the same group of Hainanese chef, of course closed. The last shift of chef was probably in the early 90s if I am not mistaken.
Not many of these original shops left... quite sad if nobody takes over.
I think it's totally different from SG Hokkien Mee. That one is stir fried yellow noodles and white thick bee hoon with pork, prawns and sotong. While the braised noodles you were eating just braised. Anyway, enjoy!
The taste for sure is different! The look is similar, but yes, you are right, I forgot about the thick bihun! I miss that in Singapore.... must go back again and eat.
That guy (I wonder who) at the end of the tree video.. macam VVIP only.. all the machai do the hard work.. he come in.. cut ribbon (in this case put up the star and on the light) and then claim glory... HAHAHAHAHA.. MERRY CHRISTMAS brother!!!
That's why the hardest jobs are the final touches mah hahahaha
Good to see you try the original Hainan Chicken Chop. I usually order mine with two slices of plain toast bread. Great with the gravy. This is the version the Hainanese peh le (uncle) called "Kay Steak" long before there were any Western Food stalls at coffee shops and food courts. The current type shouldn't be called "Hainan" and the younger generation have been misled. Some stalls call theirs "Oriental" while at James Foo it's called their "Signature". It's the right thing to do.
Hai Onn used to charge around RM3.50 when I was a kid (went often with my dad). It was around RM5 when I was a teen. When it was my turn to bring my little kids it went up to around RM9. Is it RM16 now for the comparatively small portion? Getting too much hype. Btw the white bungalow opposite used to be Kuan Lok which also served the same Hainanese fare. They closed down around the late 60s or early 70s. Hai Onn is the last one standing in Penang.
Nice tree. Mine is put up too. Merry Christmas & God Bless.
That is a great idea... some bread would have been awesome.
Hai On... Yummy
@@frankchuah1583 good place, very nostalgic
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤❤All the best to you Daddy & Family
All the best to you too.... hope you enjoy this holiday season
How long was the waiting time?
Ohhhh very fast, maybe less than 10 minutes.
@pishedbloke oh....looks like they have improved on their TAT. Haha. They were well known for their super slow preparation time. Waited almost 45min during my last trip many years ago.
Penang Hokkien Mee is called Prawn Mee in the southern states. Penang Hokkien Char is their Hokkien Mee. Confusing for northern states people when ordering these dishes in KL and down south.
Hahahaha confusing noodles! In Hong Kong, wanthan mee is soup style by default!
Yeah, wanton mee in HK was a big surprise for me bcos there was nothing but plain noodles and soup. And it was RM 38 back in 2002.
@jessl9727 hahahaha I love their beef stew rice... but every meal more than rm50 for street food
The chicken chop should have a bit of fries.. that's my only complain.. haha.. but this should be the right style of hainan chicken chop. How much is the chicken chop ?
No fries but it had a roasted potato. The chicken chop was RM14, the Hailam mee was RM8.
I lurve Hainanese food. I wonder if they hv roti babi on the menu.
There is a stall at Padang Brown, Dato Keramat Road that serves very good roti Babi and Choon Piah
@tttan2580 yup, tried that too. The aunty super friendly!
Yes, they have roti babi at Hai Onn too... quite a big menu including char mee sua, mee sua kor, lam mee and various dishes!
Their Choon Pneah doesn't come with Worcestershire sauce?
They gave me a special chili sauce... I think it had something in it which tasted like ang mor tau yew!
I didn't know ure a catholic family too just like me 😊😊😊❤
I am not religious, for sure, but I let my kids learn about the faith and we do go to church once in a while.
Last year when I visited Penang, I saw many famous & nice hawker stores are operated by relatively old "master". A bleak thought came into my mind that in a few years time, these stalls may not be that nice or totally disappear altogether due to succession issues, like Taiping! Losing that will be a big chunk of its charm!
I was in Taiping in October, noticed more foreigners esp Myanmar working as stall assistant compare a year+ ago not many Myanmar...prices also increase, plate of wan tan Mee now RM6.50 last year RM5.50😢☹️ but is still cheaper than Klang valley
I feel your pain bro... Not sure if young people want to do this unglamorous job anymore and take over these stalls. It will be sad if we lose these sifus.
Good morning happy eating😢😅😊
Good morning bro... weekend liao! Have a great weekend!
Looks yummy..will try next time I am in Penang again
Very near to Komtar area... easy to find!
