  • Join me on a nostalgic food adventure in Alor Setar, where I set out to rediscover some of my childhood favorite hawker foods! 🚗🌧️
In this video, I revisit the beloved flavors of my youth, starting with an unforgettable journey to Tai Ka Kedai Makan dan Minuman. Located just opposite Alor Setar Mall, near the Alor Setar Selatan toll, this food court was the perfect spot to satisfy my craving for kai see mee (shredded chicken noodles). Despite the heavy rain, the 1 hour 45-minute drive was totally worth it. The taste of the rich chicken stock, pork lard-infused noodles, and smooth boiled chicken brought back so many memories and delighted my taste buds.
Next, we made our way to Numerical 8 Curry House near Jalan Putra for some delicious curry rice. Even at 11:30 am, the place was bustling with customers dining in and packing food to go. The mouth-watering aroma of various curries, sambal, and fried chicken was irresistible. We packed some dishes to enjoy later with my parents.
With the rain still pouring, we decided to spend some time at Aman Central Mall. A bit of shopping helped us pass the time until lunch, but a visit to my old favorite, Zam Zam Nasi Lemak, ended in disappointment as it was closed for the Hari Raya Aidiladha holidays. Undeterred, we headed to the Pekan Cina area for lunch at Hwa Nam Yin Yong, known for their charcoal-fried noodles. The flavors were incredible and did not disappoint.
After a day filled with delicious food and nostalgic moments, we headed home, excited to share our curry rice dinner with my parents. This trip was a beautiful blend of reliving the past and savoring the present. Don’t miss out on this culinary journey!

Really enjoy all your videos. Also listening to our Hokkien dialect is such a treat as one can say we are true Penangites. I have been away for over 40 years and each time I return I find most are speaking more in Mandarin. Wishing you much success to your UA-cam videos. It is not easy to be filming all the time.

Kamsia kamsia! I wish my kids spoke more Hokkien, we used to assume anyone from the north would be able to understand our dialect. Towards Ipoh and KL Cantonese starts to be more prominent. Our education system is partly to blame too IMHO because students used to be penalized for speaking dialect in vernacular schools, so it greatly discouraged the usage. I hope we get to fix it, otherwise the next few generations will see the last of Penang Hokkien.

For safety sake, do remind your children to put on their seat belts when in car. The place n dishes are quite different from the usual. Food looks yummy... especially the lard.

Yes they always have their seatbelts on when I drive. Yes, Alor Setar food is slightly different from Penang! The curry rice is superb!

Ya many new hawker centers around Jalan Putra, the yin yong place is only 10mins away from Aman Central. Kai see mee is a bit further. The curry rice is the nearest, behind the mall area

The closest one I can find is at the food court opposite PISA, I can't remember what is the name of the stall, it says "Alor Setar Kai See Mee" or something but this one at Tai Ka is much better.

So i kept hearing about this nostalgia Golden Island kai si mee from the now-singaporean childhood friends from AS but my family and i never heard of. Ok, I gave it a shot and it was the most bland ka si mee i ever tasted. My parent wondered why i drove all the way there for such mediocre mee. kochabi or not, that Kai si mee is pretty shitty. Why all the out of towner so crazy about it? we don't like it one bit.
