- Soap making video for the Soap Challenge Club Mar 2020 - Clam Shell Technique: Regular Category with half batch.
Please always follow safety requirements while making soap! Sodium/Potassium hydroxide is caustic and can cause burns on skin or on mucous membranes!
This month's soap challenge is a such an interesting swirl design creating by Teri Endsley from Tree Marie Soapworks. I love all her soaps and she has an amazing youtube channel. Please don't forget to check her out: / @treemariesoapworks
This was my first and only attempt for this month's challenge. I am quite happy I kind of got the hang of creating the clam shell look. I will definitely use play with this technique again!
Make sure you use a slow tracing recipe for this technique as you need quite a bit of time to play with batter. Make sure you choose a fragrance oil/essential oil blend that doesn't affect your trace too! Also, you can learn from me not to be so aggressive with the pour when you have more than two colours!
The colourants I used in this video were:
White- Kaolin Clay
Black - Activated charcoal
Pink - Pink Clay
Essential oil blend: Lavender, Orange and Tea tree
Time links to the video:
0:18 Mixing of lye solution and oils
0:59 Adding essential oils
1:20 Colouring the soap batter white, pink and black
1:43 Consistency of the soap batter for the pour
1:52 Pouring of the soap batter into pitcher
2:08 Clam shell technique
2:56 Adjusting the slant of the mould
4:09 Final wet soap look
4:12 Cutting the soap
4:30 Planing the soap
4:35 Finished photos
As I have mentioned, I could have better clam shells on the right because I poured on the corner and caused the shells to appear slanted! Otherwise the finishing design and looks pretty! I love how every bar is unique and different.
Thank you Amy for organising such a challenge again. For more information about the Soap Challenge Club: soapchallengec...

Great job, Janice!! The consistency of the soap appears to be just right - such beautiful clam shells!! Congratulations! I love the contrast of the black and pink as well - even if the white didn't show up as much as you hoped.
