Just had the same problem...almost crashed my truck several times. FINALLY got the dealership to mimick the problem after it has been in 3 times in last 2 years... of course now I have to pay for 500.00 deductible on my extended warranty after they found the Rack and pinion bad...been telling them for years. Chrysler shop here sucks!!! Thanks for the great video guys, much appreciated here in northern michigan!!
Great video, after being quoted $3200 plus shipping charges at a local repair shop for my 2013 (85K miles), I found a $600 rebuilt BBB Industries unit at Rock Auto, with new mounting bushings. However, the shop won't install if for the $275 labor quote because not Mopar so I'm hunting somewhere to get it programmed after I install. Will just pull the fuse to make sure it doesn't get squirrelly on me before being programmed. Been driving it for weeks without power. What a pain this design is, there really should be a class action suit on this one. $3K for a steering repair on an 9-year old truck is crazy. Would much rather replace a belt or hose with the old style system.
I know I’m late, but my 2014 1500 has been mostly babied for 8 1/2 years. Drove it from Georgia to Odessa Texas for work to bring some items back from my man camp I had been storing there and after a 5 hour ride back to Dallas, the MF threw a red steering wheel of death on me at the gas station. I disconnected the battery and let it reset just to get it home. And now the hunt begins for an inexpensive replacement lol. Just cracked 100k miles and the damn thing hasn’t been in the shop at all in the past 6 years. Ram/Dodge should definitely have a class action on this electronic steering failure. I’m the last of my work buddies who hadn’t experienced it yet. Great video brother.
@@sunshine_schleichs Oh nice! How’s that going for you now? I ordered a new positive terminal and that wasn’t it, cleaned the wires and terminals that wasn’t it, opened up the passenger side tie rod to check that belt and that wasn’t it, belt was still good, bought a new battery since my battery’s been in truck since 2018 that wasn’t it, now we’re ordering a whole new one from Mopar at 1400$ with a core refund of 250$. Might as well just buy a new one, I was just wondering about the reprogramming if you are still good without your reprogramming?? My truck is 2013 and I’ve had it since 24000 miles and just hit 115000 miles.

This is a huge issue for Dodge 2014 1500. Complaints all over the internet about it. Total loss of steering almost took me me a ditch around a corner. You need some serious upper body strength to keep it on the road.
Did u have to reprogram the rack before the new one will work, or should the new one work right out of the box? Just installed a remanufactured one and it’s still showing codes and has no power assist.
Great video but I'm too old to take on this task. My 2014 Ram 1500 Express that I've babied since new garage kept rarely been in the rain with only 25,000 miles and the EPS rack died in the driveway. Dealer is waiting on back ordered part. In my case I'm sure it is the module inside or the electric motor. My symptom is no power steering and steering wheel icon with exclamation point flashing on instrument panel when starting up. Checked all fuses. The other thing is all OEM racks now are remanufactured. No new ones left. I'm sure they won't recall unless 20 or more people are killed on highway after eps failure. I'm old enough to remember driving vehicles in 60's with manual steering. The EPS vehicles are designed so you have enough steering to pull over and get towed. I also was told by an independent mechanic that the Ford F150's are having same issue.
Hey man, just started having this problem in my truck, 2014 1500. Doesn’t happen at start up but when I turn the wheel it will lose power and start flashing the icon. Wondering if this was the same for you and what you did about it? Appreciate any help!
@mlpkoi It most likely is the module in the rack. I took mine to a nearby dealer and had it replaced with new oem rack. It cost me 3400.00. I just sold that truck. I won't own another Ram.

Well here's a up date took truck to get oil changed and waited for the phone call to advise on my steering, no call so I called and said to check steering. Which they did and then advised that my flex coupling on steering column was lubricanted and that freed up steering. No guarantees that it'll last. To replace 227.00 for the part and 172.50 labor, got home popped the hood could smell wd-40 lube. Still have not seen nor heard from Dodge in reference my inquiring about my steering. Was referred to my dealership to check it out. I still can't believe Dodge has not done anything to help with the multiple people that are having issues with their trucks across the country. I'm going to keep trying.
I've come across 3 recalls on this piece of junk! My sons failed 30000 miles completely unacceptable!Chrysler won't cover it! The problem is a contaminated circuit board (as per recall). And the price! What a ripoff!
You still driving yours without power steering? The rack in my 2015 RAM 1500 went out about a year and a half ago at about 150k miles. Now its at 181700 miles And I have reason to believe the rack that failed in my truck is not the original that shipped from the factory. There are zip ties around the boots, which I doubt it would come out of the factory like that. I'm honestly considering tossing a 2012 hydraulic rack in, top it off, then seal it. A 2012 hydraulic rack is about $600 (including the $75 core), which I'd have to pay because I don't have a hydraulic rack. The 2013+ electric rack would be $1600 + a $250 core. The reason why I want to replace my rack is because it has recently started having hard resistance on left turns and just this morning when I went to pick it up from the shop, the steering wheel was stuck straight and I had to spend a few minutes jerking the steering wheel to break it free. I don't mind the manual steering, I just don't want another expensive POS electric rack that'll fail mid driving like my previous one did.
