My GUARDIAN review of PASSAGES: amp.theguardia...
Passages was released last week in Amsterdam, and when I saw it I was struck by the films unabashed portrayal of a destructive narcissist, without ever trying to explain or redeem him.
This makes Passages a fascinating companion piece to Tar. Both film are about an artist who leave behind a pattern of abusive relationships. However, Todd Fields film makes it very clear that the title character is also a great artist, and asks the question whether her mistreatment and manipulations of people is somehow the price or biproduct of great talent. Great talent, incidentally, is often used as an excuse for the bad behaviour of some famous artist.
Passages however leaves the audience guessing on whether Tomas is a good film director or nor. The film does have a side character who is a talented writer and who is kind, responsible and self-effacing. This way Ira Sachs makes a raw statement: it doesn’t matter how talented Martin is. He is still a destructive narcissist.
This plus the films less obtrusive style makes Passages the better and bolder movie
Lovelly review you made!
Hope you feel better soon.
Some gratuitous Sachs here.
Thank goodness the woman has an abortion 😮 imagine being stuck in that triangle 😮
Sounds good …
I love you Peter. Great review again. You really get the film and you dont try to defend it which is nice and honest.
Just came here to gift you a view ,I hope you soon gain traction!
Nice back handed compliment.
Pete, you're at the Venice film festival but where are the vlogs ?! 😿
Sadly due to various factors I couldn’t physically make it out there this year…
@@PeterBradshaw1 damm OK well thanks for letting us know. Hoping you can make some others this year for some more vital guerilla cultural dispatches
I don't understand the obsession with the whole gay man turns to straight sex during an emotional crisis trope we see so often in films and other media (a recent play & a longlisted Booker prize novel for ex.). In 2023, why haven't we moved past that?
why do we need to erase that? does it have to be gay all the time?
@@mirieshii1948 Let's compromise. For the next ten years, let's have books, plays, and movies all about how straight men turn to gay sex when they're going through stressful times. We can even it out a bit.
@@cmleidi because straight people rarely suddenly go to something they aren't? Meanwhile, we have this whole other "spectrum" of sexuality that your side "celebrate" so you can clearly by bisexual, or anything really. Straight people are just that... straight. So why are you suddenly salty that this guy is sexually fluid? I thought you celebrate that thing.
@@mirieshii1948 Thank you for proving my point and your bigotry.
