My favorite memory of Chet Atkins was hearing him tell a story of taking a cruise to relax. He had an acoustic guitar with him and was out on a deck chair relaxing and playing a little bit for his own enjoyment. The lady next to him said "you're pretty good with that guitar. You're no Chet Atkins mind you, but you're not bad". He just smiled and went back to his cabin.

@@andrebadeaux2756as someone who’s been playing clubs etc for 50 years getting watch and listen to performance like this is a tasty treat - and Suzy Boggus is like the cherry on top! Keep ‘em coming (please?)
The amount of talent in that band is Ginormous!!! A very young Brent Mason & Jerry Douglas , Handsome Harry , Mark O’Connor , Pat Bergeron, & Paul Yandell not including Jerry & Chet !!!! It’s videos like these that give me a love hate relationship with my Guitars because as long as I have played these guys will run circles around me in there 70’s !! But it sure sounds amazing & is awesome to watch!!!
They were both superb guitarists. The difference? Chet was so laid back, whilst Jerry was a showman! But what a team they made! A real joy to watch them together. Oh, how I miss them!
I agree with you describing Jerry as the showman of the two, but there is that deep melancholic feel to what he does, both when clowning and playing. That's what I think that these two have in common apart from their incredible mastery of guitar playing within the same culture of southern rural and small town USA.
If you look up the best of friends, you will find Chet and Jerry. Lots of respect and admiration between those two. Their playing together is like spun silk. I saw them live years and years ago and I witnessed one of the coolest things ever from Chet. Jerry was introing "Georgia On My Mind" and Chet followed for about two bars past the intro. Then he just folded his arms across his guitar and watched like a fanboy. Stood and applauded when Jerry finished. Kinda like he did in this clip, but with more enthusiasm. It was quite a deal, I thought. Also as in this upload when they finished "Sneakin' Around" and Chet smiled at Jerry then patted him on the shoulder. Wow! Chet also thought the world of Suzy. She deserved it. Thank you for the upload!
If you want to know what real, gifted, country guitar sounds like, THIS is who is playing when you find it. Two of the best "Certified Guitar Players", without peer. Having a full set with Suzy and that effortless band is a thing of wonder.
I hate it when you start a long video and think maybe I'll just watch a few minutes and then it is so good to hear that you end up watching the whole thing! Jerry and Chet are playing every day now without a doubt!
That’s what just happened. Suzy Bogguss’ voice doesn’t hurt the ears much either. Nanci should have written a few more custom tailored for her. Suzy’s scale precision took that Russell/Griffith colab to perfect heights
The Nanci Griffith cut was really superb. Suzy Boggus is one of the top female voices of the last 50 years of country music and she and Nanci lay those lyrics down perfectly every time. It also never occurred to me before that she and Jerry Reed would sound so great together
From players point of view, Chet somehow managed to stay current with all of the great guitarists as they came up, regardless of their respective genres. It's one of the things I respected most about him, he just loved the art regardless of who it was coming from. Jerry Reed was another great guitarist, but vastly under rated I think. I found an interview with Chet saying how horribly insecure Jerry was about his playing. He recounted a time when they were just warming up & Jerry whipped out some runs & progressions that floored Chet, when he asked Jerry to show him Jerry grew uncomfortable, started making a joke about it (his go to thing when uncomfortable) then finally said it was time for a break. LOVE seeing these two playing together, thanks sharing!!

I just realised that the drummer in this Video and in this American Shop Band is a Young Harry Stinson. Harry Stinson is part of Marty Stuart’s Band “The Fabulous Superlatives”
Love to hear Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed play together on the guitars they are both the greatest ever. They make you just sit there and listen and watch them make those guitars play that beautiful music.

There are lots of really good players around today, but no PAIR of them are as tightly linked as Chester and Jerry.

In an interview it was brought out that they were so different, that Chet was laid back, and Jerry was bounce off the wall. Jerry said this is true. Chet said it made a good contrast as their guitar playing was similar.
Jerry Reed and Chet... a match made in heaven. Mark O'Connor, another superlative. I hear the influence of Stéphane Grappelli in some of his jazz work, as I do here. All three, great composers in different in different, but related, idioms. If I were anywhere near as good as these guys it'd be hard to be as down-to-earth as these three. Just magical.
Maybe the best of Chet Atkins in this performance, is that he knows where to keep quiet.... I mean, he's up front most the time, I'd be like, play as much as i can, let them hear everything i do... but Chet, he's just listening and enjoys even when he feels it's not his turn.
Hearing that rendition of "Something ".... I Love this whole thing absolutely front to back.. don't get me wrong. But, that was beautiful. The recent Documentary and "Now and Then" Got me on a Beatles kick again. "Midnight" is one that I would have LOVED to have heard them Do. With Chet and Suzy in the style of how they did Here... Oh sweet Lord...... Jerry doing his magic and George Harrison's slide guitar behind his picking would be Insane... then throw John and Chet Together for the rhythm and small solo work and Lead. I also get a mental image in my head of George & John jamming with Chet and Jerry on Music Row in Nashville or Abbey Road. I firmly believe that each of the Beatles could easily have correctly done sessions on Country styled tunes. I would have loved to heard them on a session backed with Mark O' Conner and the various musicians out of Nashville in this Period and the Greats that came before them. It's been documented that they liked Country tunes and were big fans of Ernest Tubb. " Beatles Go Country" would have been a trip.
That rendition of Georgia on my Mind was a guitar tour de force. Chet was mesmerized. Jerry was an absolute master and innovator. Who’s to say but he might have been the best ever.
I read that someone asked Chet how it feels to be the best guitarist in the world. He said I may be well known but Jerry Reed is the best guitarist. Here we have both of them.
It doesn't hurt that they had some of the best backup musicians in the world- Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Brett Mason (a monster), and Pat Bergeson.
5 of the best. On acoustic up front is Paul Yandell, long time picking partner of Chet and a CGP recipient. Add youngsters (then) Brent Mason and Pat Bergeson. Phenoms is a good word for them.

In an interview it was brought out that they were so different, that Chet was laid back, and Jerry was bounce off the wall. Jerry said this is true. Chet said it made a good contrast as their guitar playing was similar.
This is nothing more than pure genius and mastery of those danged old guitars. Great vid. Thanks.
Chet, Jerry, and the Kid 👦 are great 👍 Guitarists, Love ❤️ the jazz style music.💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Maybe the best of Chet Atkins in this performance, is that he knows where to keep quiet.... I mean, he's up front most the time, I'd be like, play as much as i can, let them hear everything i do... but Chet, he's just listening and enjoys even when he feels it's not his turn.
Both virtuoso's on the guitar, great players...!
Guitar gods
Outdoing each other
Each thought the other was their favorite guitarist
🍺🤗cheers
Heartwarmer! My heart is feeling the feelin!
Jerry doing his magic and George Harrison's slide guitar behind his picking would be Insane... then throw John and Chet
Together for the rhythm and small solo work and Lead.
I also get a mental image in my head of George & John jamming with Chet and Jerry on Music Row in Nashville or Abbey Road.
I firmly believe that each of the Beatles could easily have correctly done sessions on Country styled tunes.
I would have loved to heard them on a session backed with Mark O' Conner and the various musicians out of Nashville in this
Period and the Greats that came before them.
It's been documented that they liked Country tunes and were big fans of Ernest Tubb.
" Beatles Go Country" would have been a trip.
Love the improv of Mr Reed
Just love that bouncy 2 beat ... and the rotating bass beat...
Chet always seemed to have an extra bounce in his step around Jerry Reed.
Très très bien 🤩, merci pour la publication.
Pretty good stuff for an old VHS recording. A lot of those band memebers have gone on to make a name for themselves through to today.
makes my heart happy we have this!
That’s just so good! Jerry always had to have the last lick.
Must be True.."Only the Good Die Young" Rest easy Gents..see ya soon
The amazing thing is Chet could play both his & Jerrys parts!
mercy shake a goat, i could walk a 100 miles listening to this and not break a sweat
It doesn't hurt that they had some of the best backup musicians in the world- Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Brett Mason (a monster), and Pat Bergeson.
And unless I’m mistaken, that is Glenn Worf back there on the bass.
@@runeulriksen I think so!
Suzy is just so precise on key. I think that’s what makes her delivery fun and energetic- such a good ear she had leftover to put into her showmanship
The two best. Period.
Two of the finest pickers on earth!
5 of the best. On acoustic up front is Paul Yandell, long time picking partner of Chet and a CGP recipient. Add youngsters (then) Brent Mason and Pat Bergeson. Phenoms is a good word for them.
awesome
This is too much talent for my senses.
fantastic....thanks!
Had to be a trip for George Harrison to know that Chet Atkins was playing one of HIS songs.
Mark O'conner ain't shabby!
Brent Mason in there playing rhythm....Mark O'Connor...bunch of all stars.
So nice to see Brent mason playing on the background
No I’m mean the Guy om the telecaster that is Brent for sure 😉
