@ 1:10 that’s a very young Ray Evernham I believe! @ 4:25, “Never Nervous, Jeffrey Purvis” finally makes into one of these vids! An incredibly talented driver, he’s the only driver to ever win both the World 100 at Eldora on dirt (3 times!) AND the Snowball Derby in Florida on asphalt! And those are two highly prized wins for any short track driver! Jeff’s career ended in 2002 in a violent crash at Nazareth, Pa. in a nascar Busch (now xfinity) series race. Severe brain injuries and a broken back. He eventually healed up, but no longer races. Max, I’d have to rank this episode as my favorite! All the pics of the modifieds during the coupe to Vega/pinto/gremlin transition hit right straight into my heart! The very days that hooked me on racing for a lifetime! Thank you so much!
Thanks for the memories. I was a kid growing up in the 70s and 80s. My biggest hero was Fred DeSarro growing up. I wanted to be Maynard Troyer when I grew up. Made time with the ladies drawing Pinto Modifieds in middle school. Drew the Lee Allard 66NH driven by Satch Worley and later on by Greg "Superman" Sacks. Mike Stefanik was a big influence at Stafford and Riverside. Went on to work on Modifieds eventually.
Thompson Connecticut Charlie j went to Sam banks at Thompson and I helped him dig stand out of the super clutch and he went out and won the future great guy I miss him
So great to see Richie Evans’ and Jerry Cook’s Daytona cars! And I remember so well the Hemi Cuda 69 car Chartrand drove. These are like racing therapy Max. Really grateful to you!
At 0:32 Gotta be an All-Star League race at Islip. Wall Stadium's Jim Hoffman #11 leads Jerry Cook #38 and Buzzie Reutimann #00. If I had to guess a year, most likely 1970 or 1971. 1970 All Star race was the first time ever I saw a race on Long Island. Track's been closed since 1984, I think.
