@ 1:57, three Virginia legends! Paul Radford, Sonny Hutchins and Martinsville Speedway! This was evidently one of those spring & fall doubleheaders that Martinsville ran for years. Judging by the trees, I’d say it’s the spring race - the “Dogwood 500”. As a sign of the popularity of late model sportsman and modified racing at that time, just look at those packed stands! Those two races were the highlights of the year for me and many others! There were short tracks all over the southeast back then, and EVERYBODY that ran on those tracks hauled to Martinsville for these shows!

WOW! The first race I ever attended was the October cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and a bunch of this film was from that era! I thank you in particular for the excellent Bobby Allison footage! A man we just recently lost, and a man that could win in anything he sat in! He and Richard Petty were as good at building these cars as driving them! That’s a quality long gone from pretty much all types of racing now! BTW, the infield experience at these races back then was beyond description! Spectators would typically equipped with two things: scaffolding and beer, LOTS of both! After assembling the incredibly unstable scaffold towers, they’d haul the beer and theirselves to the top and proceed to get hammered! What a walk down memory lane! Thanks a bunch for this one Max!

The 17 Chevelle at :15 might be my old car that we cut up and rebuilt back in the early 80s....this picture might be a few years before that...maybe Lisbon ND or Jamestown ND...Jeff Froemke drove it then.

1:53 We used to race micro midgets against Max Berrier at Tarheel Speedway back in the late 50's. He was a heck of a driver in his baby blue and white number 55. Enjoyed watching him at Bowman Gray in his gold number 12 too!
