I toured all over USA & Canada with my Boyfriend who was the stage manager. I got to know Ted and Carl, and loved Dennis deYoung who replaced the other cast member. I stood in the wings watching over 1200 performances- I got goosebumps every time! What an experience. Fun fact; Dennis deYoung did most actors’ “Sound checks” he has Perfect Pitch.

Carl Anderson was over 50 years old and his performance is not only flawless, but I'd say it's even better and powerful than in the movie. What a voice.
Wow, I was at this show. I can't believe I'm hearing this again after 20 years. I went so many times when they came to Philly on that tour and met Carl and Ted a few times. Awesome people. What a piece of history here. Wish the video was there too but this is great.
I was at one of the shows in dayton ohio. Ted threw a spungy disc 2 the crowd it just landed right in my lap It is blue with a face of jesus. I was meant 2 b there that night I was meant 2 recieve it! Love showing it off. Thank you ted and also 4 meeting u back stage i have our photo together on my wall Ted is very generous 2 all and his die hard fans!!!! Micki
I got to see Ted and Carl in NYC in, I think, 1994. Carl Anderson in particular broke my heart and put it back together with every song, though not always in that order. His performance that night is still my all time favorite of any performer in any live show I've ever seen. Listening to this recording is giving me chills. Surely he was one of the greatest voices of his generation.
I saw the cast in Baltimore and got my socks blown off by the whole cast. Afterwards my sister and I stopped by a close bar and suddenly the cast members came in to relax after the show. There were maybe 5 customers there to scared to say hello. Not me, I walked over to Ted and Carl- Jesus and Judas and said what a huge fan Me and my sister were. They introduced us to the cast members and then had drinks with us. A cherished memory. I thank God for that gift.
John Morris Conti: THANK YOU for sharing this audio; brings back such fond memories of seeing this A.D. tour multiple times. Truly love many of the refreshed orchestrations & tempos for this production. Ted, naturally, delivers in all expected spots. I'm reminded just how rock solid Christine Rea was; her hefty voice always filled the house. The biggest gift here is Carl. It's like hearing the score for the first time. The way he navigates the phrases...the nuance & layers of his instrument... a flawless execution that is, frankly, hard to describe... it all just elevates the entire experience. Heaven.
I've been seeing this live with Ted Neely and Carl Anderson since the 70's, and I saw this. Superb, as always. Best for me was 1995 or so. B'dway and after on LI.. December 1995. Got to meet them both.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful piece of history. I am a fan of Carl and Ted. I met both of them in Italy, would have been in the Ad tour, too.
Hi John Morris Conti, love this album and score. this is the one from the movie give or take a few people, but as long as Ted Neely and Carl Anderson are in it, its close to the movie. Ted Neely plays a great JESUS the way he can scream his music and still sound clear is totally awesome!!!
1:29:17 "You have nothing in your hands... Any power you have... comes to you from far beyond... Everything is fixed... and you can't change it..." He said that phrase in a 1° and 2° octave vocal range. In the original version is in 3° or 4° octave. But this part is amazing.
When the original came out i was 7-8 years old and now every time i hear "Superstar" i sing the song we all sang as kids in the school yard: "Jesus Christ Superstar Burnin' down the corner in a motorcar. "Cops come up, we don't care, we got bullet proof underwear". Aahh good times as a kids. Yah can never get it back.
One of my favorite Pilate's. I saw the show 37 times with Ted & Carl during the multi year tour. I flew to Phili for this final weekend! I recorded this from the front house left box over top the orch. pit. Great to hear from you!
The only reason I am not keen on John legend is that he does not have the right kind of rocker voice to hit / scream the high notes that every Superstar fan is obsessed with. I have heard him try to rehearse the gethsemane note in an online video and it is a very forced falsetto sound that makes you cringe! Ted will be performing Jesus live that same day in Europe!
John Morris Conti This is exactly why I am not happy with the decision to cast him as Jesus, he is a good singer, he's just not the singer for this role, heck, let him play Simon. What worries me is that I think they may have given him the part because of who they are, and not for how they performed. I don't know if you know who Jeff Buckley or Chris Cornell were (both deceased now) but I think they could have pulled it off, I don't think Jeff would have done it, but man he could hit those notes with ease.
John Legend while an incredible singer is not an actor! He did his best but he did not hold a candle to Ted Neeley or Steve Balsamo(1996) or Ian Gillian.
Yes! Back then, the crucifixion was jaw dropping theater!!! He was on a cross and then as John 1941 starts playing, he revives and suspended by wires that were barely visible he floats about 2 feet out in front of the cross and then very slowly with arms spread wide he looks down at his followers gathered below and rises up and out of sight. It was truly a stunning and moving ending!
Admittedly Ted Neeley isn't my favourite Jesus, he sounds a bit croaky to me. Carl Anderson's voice seems to have deepened a bit, which again is an improvement, and unlike in the film means I don't have to look at that horrible peach jumpsuit!
I'm not really a big fan of this VERY low bassy Caiaphas idea. I think that, when they pick their Caiaphas for the plays, they priorize bass, but to my ears, all this excessive bass makes the singer's voice lose personality. Take Bob Bingham (from the 1973 movie) for example, his voice is bassy, but he still sounds distinct, when I listen to him, I can still say "Hey, Bob Bingham is sounding great here!" even with only audio. But this Caiaphas here sounds like any other Caiphas they chose because of their very low register.

What does the A.D. mean, in regards to the tour? I saw this tour in Vancouver, amazing!
Back in the Latin spoken days A.D. meant year of the Lord and I guess they named the tour that.

Christopher Carey - probably the deepest Caiaphas I've heard. Annas sounds unusual, it could almost be a woman (holding her nose).
I may be a bit biased because Christopher Carey is my cousin, I love him as Caiaphas. Then again this is my favorite musical ever ❤
Personally I would have liked him to have portrait J.C. rather than Ted Neeley.
But that would have been too controversial in the early seventies.
Admittedly Ted Neeley isn't my favourite Jesus, he sounds a bit croaky to me. Carl Anderson's voice seems to have deepened a bit, which again is an improvement, and unlike in the film means I don't have to look at that horrible peach jumpsuit!

Are people being murdered during the overture what the hell 😂
The screams? Actually yes. The overture in this production choreography includes the Romans invading and conquering the Jewish people.
I'm not fan of this one,the best one is still the Original Rock Opera with Ian Gillan!
