The great Scott Joplin.I'm told he played an African rhytme with the left hand while he played a European melody with the right hand to produce this musical magic!
Practicing this song will help you get comfortable with reaching over a whole octave with your right hand as that's what the right hand does most of the time. It's also the reason why the song looks a lot "busier" than it really is. I would guess young pianists that don't have an octave reach quite yet probably learn an abridged version that simplifies the chords.
This is such a refreshing piece. Thanks so much for posting. I found the video part helpful in noticing all the intricacies in the piece. You're doing a good work by putting this "out there" for those who can appreciate a really awesome collection of notes, harmonies and sounds....
I've been looking for this song for 6 hours straight!! Why was it so hard!! :( So relieved now, for some reason it's not classified as happy or upbeat or even classical~
I'm a visual learner. All I ever got was piano teachers who wanted me to learn baby songs, I didn't want to learn and forced me to look at the sheet music instead of enjoying the piano. Even now if I look at a piano I know that the lessons given ruined me. Yet, it's a prerequisite of mine that all of my lovers know how to play and play well. I love the piano.
Wibbly Wobbly CORRECTION! Octopi do not have fingers nor do they have hands nor arms they have tentacles and so that means that they can play the notes easily. If you don't understand that then lets say humans had 8 arms then they could play all of the impossible piano things on the internet. Just imagine it!
OBJECTION! Octopi do not have arms. Rather, they have stubby. I feel as fingers would be just as effective as a tentacle (if not better, the suction cups wouldn't help either, as they would get stuck on the keys rather easily). The problem with saying "if humans had 8 arms.." argument is that octopi do not have 5 fingers on each hand, but one tentacle for each arm. Perhaps humans were best suited to play a piano, now that I think of it.
This is one of the first songs I learned, but for some reason, after watching this video, I can't play it correctly anymore. Synthesia makes my head spin x.x
hey i dont play piano, im just wondering how to can you have your fingers in so many places? isnt it too wide spread? is it meant to be played by one person?
To all you saying that this song should be played at 1.25 speed, you are incorrect. this song is suppose to be played slow. You may prefer it at 1.25 speed, that's your preference. the song is at correct speed set to "normal".
would it be stupid if Istrated learning paino at the age of 25? xD I mean everyone starts from 3 or 5 and I'm too old for this but I like it. Would I ever learn how to play? not for a concert but this specific song? is it possible?
dolan dak It'll take a little longer than younger people because you need to develop your hand muscles (the ones that command the pinky, ring and middle finger) since they aren't used frequently in everyday life, but are really important for the piano.
Scott Joplin kept deciding the song wasn't long enough
Haha, you're right xD
Ben Naumann fgm
do you realize this was a halftime show song for the play the sting

At 2 speed it sounds like the last lap of Mario kart
Actually, the composer himself said that you should play this "Not fast".
When I hear legends like this I just take a moment to think about “The Entertainer”, “Für Elise”, In the Hall of the Mountain King, etc.
LEGENDS
Kept rubbing at that dot on my screen at middle C.
I think it could be dead pixels or something
CorporalPig22
The dot is there to show you that that’s the middle key. It’s not a dead pixel idiot

1.25x is the speed of the actual piece. By the way, 117 years old, still better than most of today’s music.
These entertaining delights have entertaining ends
Name: The Entertainer
Author: Scott Joplin

Pretty hard yet... Entertaining... No wonder it's called "The Entertainer"
Hard?
This song wants to make me cry of joy :D And ragtime is probably the hardest genre of music to play.
The Thing I Like About This Song Is If You Speed It Up You Feel Super Happy But Slow It Down And You Feel Sad.
I tried at 255 and it was just.... Just just CRAZY
No slowing it down kills my audio
Capitalize correctly
This a serious piece of classical music, let me remind you of that.
I just learned this song in the summer holidays!:D
It's pretty much perfect although it needs a bit more practice at the end!:)
Put this at 2,0 speed its like final Mario kart lap

My grandpa likes to warm up at the piano with this song.
He had a parrot that would sing it when it was piano time. It was...
Entertaining.
Old music is the best, I like old computer games too.
The notes are falling like rain drops but give you joy !
1.25x Speed sounds more accurate.
yea
The tempo marking says not too fast, but everyone plays it fast anyway.
The original speed is how it’s supposed to be played but no one cares so everyone plays it fast so you’re used to it fast
huh hello there

Omg 2009, you can tell how the quality improved
Any piano song that starts off so simple and excels, will be a great and remembered song.

joplin himself says not to play it fast, but the fun in music is the interpretations of different players
I always played the entertainer at this speed...
Just realized I’ve been playing it wrong the whole time
Don't ruin true talent.

Hello
I loved the Movie, "Scott Joplin"! Excellent Movie about his life, and so sad too!
I thank the octopus that played this song...
Anime Asuna octopi have 8 fingers. Humans have 10! :DDD

Adelie Pops yes I meant learning with a teacher
