  • According to Heswall councillor Andrew Hodson, work is due to start in July to clear a number of boats left on the shoreline, near Heswall in Wirral and will take place over a two year period. Wirral Council has not confirmed exactly when work is due to start but councillors have approved a £100,000 spend by March 2025 as part of the local authority’s budget this upcoming year.
The boats are being taken away to avoid pollution to the surrounding area and protect bird and animal life. The Dee Estuary is an internationally important site for wildlife and is the second most important location in the UK for birds such as oystercatchers and shelducks.
“The Dee Estuary is designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its important habitat and bird populations and the Marine Management Organisation and Natural England fear that habitat is being lost due to the space the boats are taking up on the salt marsh, while also being concerned that pollutants such as oil, paints and plastics breaking down at the shore could injure wildlife and have a detrimental effect on the wider habitat.
“The council has a legal duty to respond to MMOs and NEs concerns and ensure the shore is safe for users and the environment and therefore is currently undertaking a Habitat Regulations Assessment (HRA) as a precursor to seeking assent from Natural England and other relevant bodies for the removal of Boats from Heswall Foreshore, including a detailed survey of all the boats present to identify those that appear to have been abandoned.

Great update as always another great one. There used to be a cafe bit further up from the former sailing club called vale cafe if anyone remembers there. That was there back in the 1960s when it was the thriving beach down there.

I have recently had the sad job of disposing of an old 24 ft boat. The boat was in sailable condition and I did try and sell it. I even tried to give it away, all to no avail. It’s was coming time when mooing fees were going to need paying. When I I looked on line i could see that they were a number of boats similar to mine that people were trying to get rid of.
I decided to contact a boat decommissioning (scraping) firm from down south. I cost me near to £2000 and they weren’t interested in any of the gear on board. I took off what I thought would sell and let the rest go. It was a hard decision to make but I am glad I did it. I know some people sink them and some just leave them on the shore line.
It is worthy of note that in France, and I am sure, other countries the government put a levy on all new boat. They use the money to set up boat breaker yard. All you have to do is get your boat to the yard and you will not get charge anything for ecological disposal.

Reminds me of the saying, the two happiest days owning a boat are the day you buy it and the day you sell it. Sad really to see those old rotten boats, once someone’s pride and joy.

'Sheldrakes Restaurant' used to be the thriving Dee Sailing Club in Banks Road up until the Club was forced three miles downriver towards the estuary due to silting and Spartina anglica cordgrass visible in the video.
The shore where those boats are was a lovely beach years ago where families went to enjoy themselves.

I remember sailing Hilbres at Dee Sailing Club when the clubhouse was at Sheldrakes. About 1980?

2:27 An Iroquois catamaran that would have been quite an expensive acquisition in the late 60s or early 70s. Sad to see it in that state.

Could the Sea Scouts come and remove old fittings from the disaster boats and sell them for their funds/charity?

So if you live on the Wirral you can avoid fly tipping fines by taking your knackered old boat to Heswall and dumping it a "protected" area of wetland. Brilliant!

I know they have to be cleaned away… but some of these wrecks were probably serviceable.e boats when I was a boy and used to go down there in the 70s … sort of sad to see them go but needs must,

Cant the authorities tell which are active by which boats are actually paying mooring fees?
It needs sorting out because it looks a mess, spoiling the estuary's beauty. Not just here, but all around the country.

The council should investigate the boatyard and see if they find some dodgy characters there. The boats are not being dumped on Heswall shore obliviously.
