The opuntia are awesome to use for grafting. I've done tip scions on pads cut off across the top, and I did 4 cactus sort of 'slab' grafted onto 1 opuntia pad that turned out well.
I see why they do this at this nursery - lots of epiphyllum branches are produced, which can then be cut, rooted, and sold. I was amused to remember that 50 years ago I did a similar graft, but I inserted a Christmas cactus branch into an opuntia. I did it pretty much by instinct because all I had was an incomplete description in a book. Amazingly, it worked.
actually i know what you are talking about, some called it clock face, other called it dinner plate cactus, but it is really Opuntia Robusta. u can get it on ebay
Hi , I`ve had a prickly pear plant grown from a pad for some 20 years.. It has grown tall about 6 foot. The original plant grew flowers and prickly pears and I live in NE Ohio and bring it indoors when cold. It has never flowered. I was told because shorter days in winter, and others say you need a male with a female plant. I fertilize it and grows new pads every May when weather is warm. What can I do to make it flower. If can`t be done is there another type that flowers and grows fruit that good for up N here or at least grows flowers? Thanks ! Mark
I am in the southern part of the USA and we do not even see cactus like this we just get those little grown plants...I wish I could get one of I called clock face cuttings but here I will never see one....I looked on line and cant find them. if you know of a place please let me know I have wanted one for years. thanks so much.
