  • Hi! I'm Liz and I was a semi-finalist on BBC The Great British Sewing Bee 2020
    Got some larger scraps of cotton lycra leftover from a bigger project that you want to scrapbust?
    Sewing knickers/pants/....panties, (buhhhh i hate that word) is a great way to stashbust scraps of fabric.
    But wait! Don't have any knicker elastic? Doesn't matter. As long as your fabric has some elastane (aka lycra or spandex) content you can make undies to your heart's content. All you need is either a sewing machine with a zig zag stitch, or if you're feeling fancy, a coverstitch machine.
    You can trace your own pattern from a favourite pair of pants that fit you well.
    I used my favourite pattern which is:
    Ava High Waist Briefs by Ohhh Lulu Sews

    American here, I never say "panties". I agree, it IS a cringy word . Everyone I know says mostly, " underwear" or "undies" or the old fashioned "bloomers" (if being silly). I do love your use of "knickers". "Pants" are a general term for full length jeans or trousers. Use your word, "knickers". I've heard the word many times so know what it means, I think most Americans do. If they don't, I think they can figure it out from the context of your video. Thank you for your video, I'm concerned with the way things are in the world that we might not be able to get elastic (and other things) or afford it at some point. So good to know different ways of making necessities. ❤

    *Chuckle!* I'm from the US and I hate the word "panties," too. I usually call them underpants or undies as others have said. 😂😂 I appreciate the advice on sewing underpants without elastic. Seems like it should be doable with 95%/5% Cotyon/lycra blend. :)

    Basically a good idea. Love that pattern; it is so comfortable. However, I like to use elastic with it as it is more stable. Still ....if you find this method is good for you .... go for it! The great thing about sewing is that we can sew things to our own specifications. Love, love this pattern. Good job.

    Thanks for such a good tutorial. Loved the humourous editing too! Only thing I struggled with was the "grading" of the gusset part - could you possibly show this in more detail please if you do another underwear video? Low rise boy shorts, or bikini briefs would be ace! PS thank you also for including the captions option.

    • @LizGrylls
      @LizGrylls  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Anne. The grading just means that I cut into the seam allowance layers of the gusset seam at varying widths. One layer was cut about ⅜", one about ¼" and one about ½" just to stop the seam being super bulky. You could overlock that seam if you wanted but I find it's better straight stitched and graded.

    Lovely video, thank you. Sewing Bee has encouraged me to learn to sew. I have a sewing machine but it seems a lot of projects would benefit from having an over locker - is it worth getting one and are they easy enough to use? Thank you

    • @LizGrylls
      @LizGrylls  3 роки тому +4

      Honestly if you ask anyone who bought an Overlocker they will tell you it will take your sewing to the next level, especially on stretch fabrics. They're not hard to use, it's just worth noting that overlocked seams are a bit more irritating to unpick and impossible to correct if something is too small (they chop the seam allowance off)

    One of the under garment patterns has two pieces for the gusset. And the seam is sandwiched in so there isn't a raw edge. It is a brilliant way. It is a little fiddly but once you understand how it works, it is 'why didn't I think of that!' Kind of situation!😆😊❤️👍

    • @LizGrylls
      @LizGrylls  2 роки тому +1

      It depends for which part of the construction you're referring to. If side seams/connecting the gusset pieces i would favour a triple straight stitch which is stretchy and won't pop. If your machine doesn't have that stitch you could try a really shallow zig zag or lightning stitch.

    • @LizGrylls
      @LizGrylls  3 роки тому

      You'd still need a way of hemming them around the legs and waist. There is a way with the serger in theory. You can either make a mock "band" by folding the hem up and then back on itself and serging (overlocking) the edge. Or there is a way to get a flat lock which involves loosening the tension on the left needle and doing as above with the mock band but do not cut the edge. When you flatten the hem back out you get vertical stitches on the right side and overlocking on the back. I'd consider both of these methods "hacks" though and your sewing machine might give a neater finish. If you're up for the experiment though it could be interesting!

    US "panties" = underwear; "pants" = jeans, trousers, etc.

    Well that's great but you didn't show us how you even did it right away you just you got your cutout made that's too bad I was wanting to know how you did that first part

      I'm not sure what you mean. If you're referring to how I got the pattern, it's the Ava pattern by Ohhh Lulu. If you want a free pattern that's very similar you could try the Maxine pattern by Evie La Luve.

    How many underwears do you get in a meter

    • @LizGrylls
      @LizGrylls  Рік тому

      I'm not sure, it depends on the pattern you're using and what size you're making. You might get 4 or 5 high waisted pairs if you're careful with cutting

    Why dont you recomend a twin needle with sewing machine? It wotks!!

    • @LizGrylls
      @LizGrylls  3 роки тому +5

      While a twin needle is great for hemming dresses, I don't find it stretchy enough for waist bands like this.

    Hmm “pants”? In Australia 🇦🇺 we’d call them ‘undies’ or ‘knickers’, or ‘panties’, or ‘briefs’, but never “pants”.
    Pants are long outer wear, so it was different and a bit strange for my brain hearing undies called pants. 😂😂

    Does it matter what weight of cotton spandex is used?

    • @LizGrylls
      @LizGrylls  3 роки тому +1

      A little bit, but only in the way that the heavier the weight of CL that you use it might be less stretchy than something in a lighter weight.

    • @LizGrylls
      @LizGrylls  3 роки тому +1

      So you might find that the same size in a heavier weight might be more snug.

    I'm allergic to elastic. I wanted to use my 100% organic cotton fabric, but it has 30% mechanical stretch.

    • @LizGrylls
      @LizGrylls  9 місяців тому

      You could try it, I think the lack of stretch is less of a problem because you can easily size up to counteract that, a bigger problem will be a lack of recovery in the fabric.
