Hi Kathie, since you are knowledgeable, I thought I'd try asking you this question (I'm a relatively new sewer). When she sews the elastic onto the fabric, it looks like she's stretching it a little bit. Is that correct? How much should it be stretched as I sew it? Thanks so much.
@@elizabethburns8893 Hello...I use a Stretch & Sew pattern, but the idea is the same for any pattern when sewing elastic to an opening. Divide the opening into quarters or thirds. Could you really? With the cost of fabric I find this hard to believe. Not to mention that even if you recycle fabric, most other clothes or household fabrics are not the same kind of fabric out of which panties are made. The only way I can see making your own underwear beating the cost of what you can buy in a store is if you made your own high end lingerie. Then you might gain an advantage . I don’t think a home sewer is going to beat the margins of mass produced underwear. I think you could make lingerie for less than Cadolle, La Perla, Coco de Mer, or Carine Gilson charge but only because a hobby sewer does not charge themselves for their own labor.

Great video and brilliant idea to use a plastic bag. I think I'd prefer to use a three step stretch stitch to sew it as opposed to a straight stitch to allow for full stretch or use an overlocker if available.
I think every sewing machine has some zigzag /elastic stitches. And if you use a jersey needle, you don't need an overlock machine. Wich is very expensive.
When I want to make a sturdy pattern I use on sale heavy weight gift wrapping paper. Also if you have that broken zig zag stitch on your sewing machine that's what you're supposed to use on elastic. Other than that great video. You might want to consider for what you're saving to make your panties out of silk because they're very breathable soft and comfortable and very durable. Much more durable than knit Cotton. you only have to back stitch once at the end if you're sewing in the round

I didn't see it pop up and only saw a dream allowance in her cutting on the sides. Maybe if she sees our conversation she can edit the text under the video and add a note. I also looked in under the video. I do love this idea though.
@@4essentialbalance I think I see what you mean. She only added extra for the sides and the crotch liner part. No extra for the leg openings and top edges. I think I would add just a bit extra or the panties are going to be slightly higher cut on the legs and lower on the body.
This is a very nice and cute tutorial to help people understand how to clone and use a basic pattern, although I do feel that it is a little lacking in communicating some fundamentals and "why's" behind certain actions. I think a little on-screen explainer of things like seam allowances, hemming, back-stitching, just as they are happening, would help viewers understand on a deeper level how you go about this construction, and hopefully they will come away with enough knowledge to try applying this to other patterns or even creating their own from scratch

I love the idea of using clear bags, very nice! However, there are issues with the construction that a newer sewist might not catch. Notes: 1) you added seam allowance for the hip seams, but none for the waist or leg openings, then you added what looks like 3/8" elastic. Thus, the panties you make will have larger leg-holes and a lower waistband than the exemplar. 2) It's far better to zig-zag the gusset. A shallow zig-zag (like 2 width 2.5 stitch length) is almost unnoticeable if you use coordinating thread. 3) Holy cow, don't straight stitch the elastic! The first time you put on those panties, you'll hear threads snapping! Yes, that's just the baste stitch on a first pass, but you don't show a step removing the baste, so I assume you left it in.
Very clever and beautifully made. Unfortunately for me, my sewing machine must be completely rusted over by now because I haven't used it since the 80's , but i now can't afford to buy a new one. Also it is always very helpful if you say what type of material you used to make your items. I have no idea what material underwear is commonly made from.
You can buy a lot of underwear with what they will charge you. If it has been stored right it will be fine. Check the manual it should say where to lubricate.

Wondering if you could instead add extra on each part of the pattern (legs/waist) and make a tube or casing, and thread in elastic that way? I'm thinking the earliest knickers/underpants had ribbons threaded through like this and tied at the sides of the legs, and waist? That way you get the elasticity of elastic without contact?

what stitch are you using for the straight stitches? i feel like a regular one would not be stretchy enough, the threads would break right away. is it an elastic (two steps forward, one step back) stitch? or is there a secret to it?
it's a regular stitch. It will hold. She's pulling the red elastic a little bit while sewing it on... this creates the scrunchy effect of the material gathering. Does that make sense?
@@c.powell8472 for me it wouldn't hold - the main fabric itself is also stretchy, so you need a seam that would stretch along with it. a straight stitch is barely any more stretchy than the thread itself - it's just two straight lines of thread with barely any give. whenever i have sewn knit fabric in the past that way, the tread just broke when i pulled on the finished product. i am used to using the elastic stitch on my machine instead, but it looks a little different than this, so i seriously wonder what the secret here is. i suppose a very small stitch lenght combined with very small tension could make the threads loop on each other a little more leaving some more give, but the way she does it makes it look wayyy to easy compared to my previous experiences. unless this is some special thread :D

Cotton jersey, of course, what else? Cotton because it's skin-compatible, long-lasting and easy to wash, jersey because it's elastic and can easily adapt to the body shape.
Good idea. I often use old clothes as patterns. However the clear plastic is less visible than I like. Any paper will do, and there is in US fabric stores, in the interfacing section, a gridded pattern cloth. This works well for permanent patterns.
I would use heavier plastic which is good reuse over n over. And maybe needs to be said, ppl should make sure to wash it before using for pattern making the first time. I loved this idea bc I like the comfortable underwear w out elastics and they're easy to sew :)

Sewing underwear by hand wouldn't take long, they are small and not many seams! Hand sewing can be as strong or stronger than by machine. At times, hand sewing is less awkward than machine sewing. Take it from someone who has been sewing by hand since I was 8, and machine sewing since I was 11.
hand sewing is fine and that's how everything was sewn for thousands of years before sewing machines were invented. But you should check out some videos for techniques e.g. you can't just use a quilting stitch. Morgan Donner makes period dresses on her channel and she does a lot of the sewing by hand. if you really need a machine for big projects try and get a good used basic machine rather than a cheap new machine. my friend doesn't sew very much but when she does she uses an antique machine that was made before electricity....she got it for free.
I had a flood in my basement and had lost a full bin of all my sewing patterns. I was devastated. So I got smart and started saving the thin sheets of packaging material (Not bubbly wrap) from various products I ordered. Much more sturdy..smooth and easier to work with instead of wrinkly plastic bags. 😊
Just imagine if we needed to do this literally because we couldn't purchase underwear or could help a girl or woman if she had none? These skills make us the women and men we are meant to be. I'm going to use Pellon for the pattern. Thank you young woman, who would have thought?

@@WendyJoan-j5z but isn’t that a lot of work?😭 if I’m good at sewing maybe it’ll be nice to make one but I’m not and too lazy.😂 You must be good at sewing! Amaaaazing👍❤️
I think I just found a good use for some old T shirts. Now I just need to set up my sewing machine and get it working right. Seems like you could save a lot of money doing this. Thank you for the inspiration. The finished product looked as good as storebought.
К сожалению, но из старых футболок и трусы сразу будут тоже старые ...

Such a great idea using the plastic bag for a pattern! You made it easy so we can make out own underwater. Thank you for sharing.
There are no words to explain how much I love this comment
I want to make my own underwater too!
Great video and brilliant idea to use a plastic bag. I think I'd prefer to use a three step stretch stitch to sew it as opposed to a straight stitch to allow for full stretch or use an overlocker if available.
But this does show just a basic machine can do the job !
I think every sewing machine has some zigzag /elastic stitches. And if you use a jersey needle, you don't need an overlock machine. Wich is very expensive.
I made a pair like this, but didn't figure out the waist elastic length so well. That's always tricked me.
Actually, in the gusset part, extra fabric could be included for additional protection at certain times of the month.
She stretched the elastic as she sewed it so that allows for stretch. So does the zig zag stitch.
Great idea (silk), JoAnne! I might try that, with this pattern, to make dupes of my favorite sleep shorts...
Also, shouldn’t she have backstitched?
@@alliinwonder9675 .. She did that, but was quick, missed it in the beginning too.
@@alliinwonder9675 no, I agree with a broken elastic zigzag. far as I know you can't backstitch on an electronic sewing machine. but you can by hand. anyone want to do a video of hand backstitching panties? hmm sounds like soft p*** for the guys, now that I think about it.

I’ve always been nervous to try this sort of sewing because I didn’t know how much to stretch the facing or elastic. Eg t shirt neck. I may just give it a go now thanks to you!

Awesome tutorial. The only thing I would change is allowing a small extra amount for the seem. Otherwise they will be 1/4-1/2 inch smaller than the pair you created the pattern from.
She did allow for the seam and notated in centimeters and inches.
I must be missing it then. 🤷♀️
When she cuts near the seam, a brief text popped up giving the seam allowance. I agree it should be more clearly stated.

🤝и мы с Кубани, около Тамани.🤗

Take it to a repair shop and they will clean and oil it for you.

Então só utilize a parte de corte e de medir o elástico o restante se fizer igual vai se arrepender, primeiro pq a maneira que ela costura o forrinho a costura fica pra fora e a dobra fica rígida o que e deve incomodar muitíssimo e segundo ela costura o elástico com ponto reto, ou seja, não tem como esticar o elástico nas pernas sem ser o mínimo que ela mostra pq a linha não estica e vai arrebentar e ela não esticou o elástico como fez na cintura, nada adianta colocar um zig-zag por fora se vc "amarrou" o elástico por dentro. what stitch are you using for the straight stitches? i feel like a regular one would not be stretchy enough, the threads would break right away. is it an elastic (two steps forward, one step back) stitch? or is there a secret to it?
Вроде зигзаг
it's a regular stitch.
Maybe try on an old t-shirt before buying new fabric

P.S. I subscribed your video 😊
You can totally hand sew, it will take longer but hand sewing done well lasts longer than machine sewing
Hand sewn seams are more comfirtable than machined
