Monopoly pretty much controlled my life for a few months when I was like 11.
manitogames says the mexican...riiight...
manitogames Reason? I see no point in raging douche.
Kevin Pineiro btw I'm not the 1 he called animefag, and I'm Mexican.
manitogames you still dont need to be a scumbag out of thw sudden.
So that means you finished one game right?
monopoly is going to be #1 and I haven't wached the video yet
It's the last
ElijahDuong because it's #1?
Monopoly: The Friendship Destroyer
Don't you mean UNO
Beast_player23 never play that game with mexicans.
Paul Meade actually because they will always steal all the green cards.
***** Well in Monopoly they'll just try to jump the borders. lmao
haha its kinda true tho
Great to see the history of these branded games, but I'm glad there is now a new shift towards newer and more modern board games.
Ah board games... The easiest way to make what used to be friends and family into lifelong mortal enemies.. I am never playing trivial pursuit or RISK ever again.
Chess should have definitely been in the list.
ArcticAngel1 well they said it wouldnt be on it in he beginning
Fuck off
RISK Legacy is my favorite, followed by RISK 2210. :)
You should try Blood Rage or Starship Samurai. Those games easily replace Risk for me, heck Risk: Europe replaces Standard Risk.
How many of you have actully played trough a whole game of monopoly?
No one finishes monopoly.
Everyone just calls it quits when the first person goes bankrupt. Which can talk a LOOOOOOOONG time.
Not a indication of good game design imho. Monopoly is a horrible archaic game
I think I made it through one once, though it was spaced out over several days. It's definitely a game that takes a lot of patience, something the current generations are lacking.
Slymaster9 that is true. Usually when the Pyant family plays I'm usually the first one out.
If it's taking too long it's because you're playing with the wrong rules. When someone lands on a property and decides not to buy it, it goes to auction. You don't get cash from free parking. You don't get $400 from landing on start.
Patternicity
1. Any idea how long auctioning takes?
2. Sure, no free money
3. No, you only get $200
Now you still have a 3 hour game easily.
You included Life. That makes me happy =)
Me and my friends played this game lots of time back in the early 90s. Definitely one of my favorites of all time.
I have amazing memories of Axis and Allies. My Dad, brothers and I would set it up in the dining room and play whenever we had time (my mom hated it because it used up our biggest table for about a week) needless to say, that is one of the highlights of my childhood, and my favorite board game to date
Risk, destroying friendships since 1957. Well done, Mr Lamorisse, well done.
I LOVE Clue, Risk, Monopoly, and the game of Life
Those are probably my top 4 favorite board games.
The real childhood memories and the time where we actually played games.
If this list included ALL board games this would be a much different list. Being a huge fan of Euro Board Games this list only tickles my childhood. The one exception in this list is Settlers of Catan. Sure, there are games on here that originated from Europe, but Settlers was the only one I played in my later days, so looking back it makes me sad that there aren't more complex board games like Carcassone, Agricola, Ra, Pillars of the Earth, Stone Age, Ticket to Ride, and hundreds more. I'm sure there are board games in other countries that could deserve a spot here, but I don't mention any because of my lack of knowledge of them. In terms of an American based list this list seems fine it my eyes and makes sense.
Chutes and ladders? Don't you mean eels and escalators?
+Erika Carter LOL! Poor Spongebob-That game just hated him!
eels and escalators don't you mean elephant trunks and stairs
"how do those Parker brothers sleep at night" LOL :D
I love playing all kind of games. Trivial Pursuit being my favorite but honestly it's borderline calling Battleship & Connect Four board games.
I still stop to remember the Great Charge of 2012 and all of the tiny plastic soldiers who lost their lives that day. I also remember the friendships that were destroyed. And the Risk board that was ripped in half out of sheer frustration.
Then replace it with AXIS AND ALLIES!!!
Come on now, it's called "Cluedo". It's a British game, call it by its real name. :L
In the US it's called Clue.
It's clue, limey.
***** Well it's not though is it.
It's also "Cluedo" in Australia.
Yes, because British people never change names to things. Shut up!
I'm surprised sorry wasn't made in Canada (get it?)
LOL I get it because I'm Canadian myself and because I know my stereotypes.
Similar to the Canadian releases of Girl Talk Bratz Edition, Jenga Girl Talk and Monopoly Pink Boutique Collector's Edition which are made just for girls
😹😹😹😹😹
Sorry I don't get. Get it?
i have played and own all of them, i am aiming to get Carcassonne soon, Wil Wheaton is the source of finding new games to play on table top. Thanks Wil!
#tabletop #wilwheaton
One game i really miss is guess who, pick up stix, marbles, jacks, and marjax!!! My family created a game we called marjax! A mix between marbles, jacks, and pick up sticks! We carved holes into a plastic see through tube, put a marble inside and stuck the sticks in a way that it holds the marble up. Each stick you take out makes the marble fall another level in the tube. The goal is to remove every stick and to keep the marble in the middle of the tube and not let it fall to the bottom. Its a fun challenging game.
When I was a child I would try to eat the people from the candyland game. I had issues.
I used to deep throat bananas
I didn't
I don't like bananas
Brady Amelia Girafes are weird....
GamerWalkthroughs101 Neither did I, I'm allergic to them.
***** true
Remember when watchmojo only had to say, this is the list of top ten (fill in the blanks)...now, they have to spend an entire minute saying don't write us, don't call us, and don't comment about this because this is specifically about this during this year, that only does this, and if you want that, see this or that.
What?
It's better now because of it
WatchMojo.com Lol..He is just trying to say that Mojo has excluded certain board games like Chess because those are in a different sub-category of board games that don't meet the criteria here..And Mojo now has to be explicit about why these types of choices might not be in the list and might be in a separate list with different criteria..Whereas before,Mojo didn't care about explaining all this according to him and just went straight to the countdown..
WatchMojo.com
Klsau explained it quite perfectly, thanks. Yes, originally your lists used to just say, this is the list of top 10's that we chose, basically, deal with it, but now there are 14 criteria for why this is this specific top ten list instead of simply saying for example 10 best board games, done. I think it has a lot to do with the level of people who angrily comment that you should have put this or that on a specific list. I mean there is now also the inclusion of honorable mentions to kind of curb those type of comments rather then the first sort of lists which basically just put up a top ten and that was that.
+WatchMojo.com since when does connect 4 class as a board game....as yoda would say, "board game it is not"
Couldn't agree more. Nice job
Nice one, more board games list please :)
Connect Four seriously should've been on this list
It wasn't, it was an honorable mention.
Not a board game
Doesn't a board game need to have, you know A BOARD!
Buc Whovian I think I understand what watchmojo is going for. I can see why Connect 4 would be classified as a board game whereas OPERATION wouldnt be. The latter requires physical dexterity as a main condition whereas Connect 4 doesn't. Otherwise Battleship shouldn't count as a board game
Geometry Dash Agent nah man connect four sucks
A few better board games than most of these:
-Ticket to Ride
-Pandemic
-Shadows Over Camelot
-Small World
So true, sadly most people who never get into boardgaming will never know the joy of playing a modern boardgame that involves more then just rolling a dice and doing what the card/board says.
I have played Ticket to Ride (awesome game) but my favorite is Empire Builder. In this train game you have to build track across a board with special plastic-based crayons (wax will not rub off) and deliver loads from city to city across the lower 48 states, southern Canada, and all of Mexico. You can also upgrade your train for a turn and there has been at least one other version (iron dragon, which is slightly more complicated). The first person to obtain 250 million dollars and connect six of the seven major cities wins.
I think Pandemic was disqualified because it's too young. Ticket to Ride probably should have received an honorable mention though, but I must admit with shame I've never heard of the last two.
sonicpsycho13 Good list. Most of the games I like are modern, so they wouldn't have made the list. I'm kinda upset that Carcassonne wasn't mentioned though, since that game is up there with settlers of catan. The rest of the board games on this list I felt were absolute garbage.
sonicpsycho13 Good list. Most of the games I like are modern, so they wouldn't have made the list. I'm kinda upset that Carcassonne wasn't mentioned though, since that game is up there with settlers of catan. The rest of the board games on this list I felt were absolute garbage.
Settlers of Catan is great. My last two years of college were just filled with people calling out.. "Settlers?" for others in our dorm to come and play.
I've played almost every game on this list (except for "Stratego" and "Risk"), but I've never even HEARD of "The Settlers of Catan". Also, I think that "Trouble" and "Headache" - with the "Pop-O-Matic" - should have gotten at least an Honorable Mention.
That's too bad, you gotta play Settlers. It's pretty addicting actually.
Axis and Allies: Global 1940. Hands down one of the greatest board games I have ever played. If you have the time and friends that want to join you, it can takes days, even weeks to finish. Granted the boards combined are ten square feet I believe.
Yes. We are the true strategy board gamers.
@@calebmoncrief2521 Don't forget the NO LIMIT as well!!!
STILL WORTH IT!!!
Top 10 modern board games please (Pandemic, Catan, Twilight Imperium, etc)
When my mom and dad got divorced i used to go over to my dads apartment on weekends and play stratego with him. That game was awesome and always gives me good memories during a bad time!
I'm just happy I've played every single one, even the honorable mentions
We all knew what number one was gonna be whether we liked it or not.
With the exception of Catan, these games are in the top 10 because they are the most well known, not the best, games. Perhaps there will be a top 10 modern board games, if enough people suggest it.
I think the list would still end up being largely the same, with perhaps some newcomers like Ticket to Ride and Pandemic sneaking in.
Probably, but one can hope otherwise.
my favorite is talisman. such a timeless classic
Bar Sorry and Settlers we had all these as a kid at home, the nostalgia, game nights with dad. No Guess Who, Mousetrap or backgammon but good mix
What the heck is up with the Big Bang Theory laugh track? Freaking hell, its the same joke 5 times in a row with the same punchline. And it's not even a joke, it's just a statement.... THIS is what passes as entertainment?
You must be new to the Internet.
They have a live audience.
It's a play on words, the joke is that Sheldon doesn't realise what he's saying.
"I need wood for my sheep." is a childish in-joke for Catan players. You laugh at how it sounds coy, but dirty, but then you laugh at the fact that you're being juvenile.
It's a live audience but I agree, it's annoying.
Does anybody remember a game called Trouble? Was a game I liked as a kid.
+Frank08046 Yus I love that game
morrigan0103 Do they still make it? My favorte chilldhood game.
I'm pretty sure, I don't really know though. There is one in my class room. I'm going to look it up, but I really like that game so I hope so.
No I
Pop-A-Matic pops the dice, pop a 6 and you move twice. Fond memories from the '60s.
Clue will always be my favorite board game! I love it!!!
cluedo*
I have my own 4 board games which are parodies of 4 other board games they are Toponoly for Monopoly,Dahlia for Lotus, trivia supportus for trivial pursuit and Flora and Fauna for Fauna
Prediction : Monopoly is #1
Love the Axis and Allies game.
Not more than me though!!!
True story. Lord of the Rings Risk had an "expansion" that was the other half of Middle Earth, had new units, & a two player mode on the other side of the board. But it was only available in the Europe.
Clue! also had a musical. It wasn't a big musical, but it still exists.
A few board games I have:
Exploding kittens
Gloom
Arkham horror
Survive!
Fluxx
Descent 2nd ed
Escape the curse
Smallworld
Castles of burgundy
Suburbia
Dungeon petz
Splendor

(This list is not complete)
...
Ssshhhh. Many of those are GOOD board games!
MrCScottie I only know a few of these games. i don't have as many as you, but would you like to know my humble list?
Lugo428 sure!
MrCScottie T.I.M.E. STORIES(with 3 cases not including Asylum)
Tragedy Looper(with the Midnight Circle expansion)
RISK
Ikusa
Ghost Stories
Deception: Murder in Hong Kong
The Resistance(with 2 expansions)
Chess
Axis & Allies 1941 edition
Sherlock Holmes: Consultant Detective
Fortress America
Legends of the Three Kingdoms
Liar's Dice
Pandemic
monopoly really good
I love all of these board games!! Sorry, the Game of Life, Scrabble, Cluedo, Risk and Trivial Pursuit are all faves but Monopoly is number 1 in my eyes!!
My favourite board games are: Electronic talking Battleship (1995 edition), Kerplunk, TMNT: the tower of power, Castle Panic!, Jenga, Monopoly Jr., Tornado Rex, Battledome, D&D, Oh Rats!, Hungry Hungry Hippo's, 13 Dead End Drive, Perfection, Mouse Trap, Scene it! & The Real Ghostbusters (plus many more).
Game of Life represents American life in a very ironic manner: in the end, everything you've achieved in life is measured in money. My favourite part is the fact that each child is worth $5000 or so.
I used to hate playing Battleship, I used to catch my little bro cheating xD
My favorite board game is "Betrayal at House on the Hill" because it's never the same game twice in a row.
Do u guys need help with an updated version on top ten or 20 board games and RPGs?
'every territory in the world'
doesnt have new zealand...
they have a LOTR map for fucks sake, but they cant even add the country that those movies were made in onto their standard map...
BATTLESHIP HAS ABSOLUTELY NO GOD DAMN STRATEGY
It actually does. Once you hit a ship, just keep going sideways until you hit it completely. Also, the best way to hit as many ships as possible is to go diagonally, forming an X on the board.
+Pamela Salazar first of all when you say, "just keep going sideways", that is not strategy and all you have to do is avoid the X that your opponents may create
***** what the hell did u just say? No but seriously I understood none of that
***** oh I understand now, but when you make out the shape of the ship it's random where the rest of the ship is facing so all you have to do is guess where the rest is facing
Btw for the people that replied to this, even if somehow battleship did actually have strategy, there are so many good board games out there that could easily one up battleship such as: Stratego, Goblett and never forget forbidden desert and forbidden island
Good list and quite informative regarding origins of the games. But honestly, I would put Monopoly as one of the top ten. Considering how many versions of the game there are. Klingon, Star Wars, Calgary (or your city) and Simpsons to name just a few.
clue is so nostalgic.
I LOVE RISK!
McWalker Gaming finally someone who likes Risk as much as me.
Art Garcia I like your profile Yin Yang is my favorite symbol
What about Mouse Trap? I used to love that game.
it wasnt made before 2000
Spartacus the Muffin Man Where did you get that idea? I had mine back in the 60s.
Yasss I love to play Mousetrap!
+Spartacus the Muffin Man /facepalm. I had that shit in the late 80s. But Mouse Trap probably isn't on this list because most people didn't actually play the game, they just liked the trap set up.
So glad that risk was there!
Worried that the Watchmojo staff would be arguing too much about it!
I Like Monopoly, I love that game so much, years & years ago, back at my old home, I found it then I got used to it.
should be called "the top 10 of mostly hasbro and parker brothers boardgames."
Simply because they made a best board games.
You don't own a lot of boardgames do you?
hasbro owns parker bros and milton bradley (as well as wizards of the coast and others) so it is redundant. Settlers of Catan is owned by the Asmodee which a,so owns most of the new boardgame titles you’ll see at a hobby shop under many different names due to a similar acquisition spree. It seems consolidation has always been a part of the industry.
Clue at only #4? This is malarkey!! I rather play Clue over any of these games.
Have you played Settlers or Risk before? They're amazing games. I actually find Clue fun myself, but it doesn't possess nearly the level of challenge of those other two.
I agree! Clue is the best! I love it!
Clue will always be #1 in my heart
I remember I had Mouse Trap but I never bothered to learn all the rules to it. I only got it for the contraption, which lamely didn't work completely more than half the time. As Bart Simpson said, it's "a game so lame, nobody has ever finished it."
I loved Sorry!, Chutes & Ladders, Candy Land and Connect Four as a kid.
catan is the best!...it ruins friendships almost as much as monopoly
NOTHING ruins friendships like Monopoly can...NOTHING!!!
yea monopoly will always tear families and friendships apart
undead890 you've obviously never played mario party
*****
Mario Party is a video game, not board game, but even so it's still not as bad as Monopoly, but it's closer.
well it is a board game within a video game, and i was more just talking about how its game that kills friendships more then something that will be on the list. actually thats a good idea for a list, top ten games (all types of games) that have killed friendships.
clue...? its called cluedo...
Im from America, but Cluedo sounds better.
Ticket to Ride is one of my favorites. If only Munchkin wasn't a card game with a board, it would have been a great addition to this list.
Monopoly, life, clue, and battleship are the only ones i'd played. Takes me back to the good old days
Well I have warhammer 40k and fantasy sitting in my living room. I suppose DnD wouldn't qualify as a board game, but somehow connect four is a "board game"
DnD would qualify I think. Connect Four, I wouldn't think so. Nor Warhammer, 40k or not.
UA-cam rapper thelegion Just wondering but why don't you think games like 40k wouldn't qualify? I found the criteria to be quite vague.
Warhammer is a game with pieces, played on a board....
Matt Pepperdine
No, it's played on a table. Not the same thing.
shinmusashi44 That''s odd because every game I've played of it in the last 11 years has been played on a board.
Why limit it to games released before 2000. That's like before the time GOOD board games became a thing....
I've played, and rather enjoyed, all the games on this list. True, I do like some new ones but the classics really got most of the new stuff beat. The only major games I can think of that really get snubbed because of that rule are Ticket to Ride and Pandemic. Other than that, most people still play these games more than any others, including the honorable mentions.
Drew Baker No sorry, obviously this is all subjective but seriously anyone who still finds Monopoly more fun than Ticket to Ride, Lords of Vegas, Cosmic Encounter, Pandemic, etc in this day and age (having played them of course) is crazy. It's like saying "screw outlast or amnesia: tdd I want to play silent hill 1". In this example Silent Hill 1 is a classic horror game, but it has been improved upon in every way with more recent games. This is the thing with board games name me a classic game and I'll probably be able to name a modern game that's similarish but does it 10x better!
HeroQuest is one of my favourites as an easy to get into Dungeons & Dragons but it's not popular enough to be on list... polarity is another great one and Mister X Scotland should of been honourable mention maybe...
The before 2000 eliminates many of my favorite games, as board game design has been coming along in leaps and bounds as of late.
These are my top 10 board games according to your criteria.
1 Wildlife Adventure
2 Eurorails
3 Merchant of Venus
4 History of the World
5 Space Hulk
6 Union Pacific
7 Space Crusade
8 Elfenland
9 Entdecker
10 Railway Rivals
Settlers of Catan is way better then monopoly! The two should switch.
I am not sure why you wanted to omit 15 years years of better board titles. If you are willing to include Catan because of the year it was made, than all the other games similar and inspired by it should have been included. I like your content overall, but this list is kind of pointless.
+Mike Primeau Because the mainstream don't know that many of those titles exist. Most of the newer titles can only be bought in specialty game stores. Settlers of Catan has only started to be sold in mainstream shops over the past couple of years and games like Ticket to Ride and Munchkin have only found their way onto the shelves of your average Wal-Mart or Target in the past year or so. It was a vote on the Watchmojo website which likely has a very mainstream audience.
Clue is complicated, but AWESOME
Interesting video......I've never played most of these games. As far as this list goes I'm only familiar with Scrabble, Monopoly, & Sorry. I've played Chutes and Ladders just once so far in my lifetime, (in July 2010) and won it on my 1st try against 2 others. The one I like playing most is Connect 4 from the honorable mentions.
I deeply hate Monopoly
why?
TheTinkerbell41358 // Tinkerbell 41358 cause it sucks, it's boring, it's too long to play and little to no replay value.
Lugo428 anybody who hates monopoly simply means they can't play it right, therefore you probably suck at it
Fresh Toxic I have won games of Monopoly. That still doesn't change my opinion of it. If you want to know why I hate the game so much, I can tell you. Only IF you want to hear it.
Lugo428 so that game is 1-12 kids
the big bang theory is a terrible show that relies on shitty humor and laughtrack, it trys to appeal to the "nerd" demography but rips on them at the same time
But TBBT isn't the subject here. Go to the top 10 defining TV shows of the 2010's video and leave your complains right there :)
***** That's ok, all I'm saying is that his opinion seems out of place if it's posted right here.
They have a live audience. Not a laugh track. Look at any behind-the-scenes videos.
You never mentioned, before it was a boardgame- while they were making "Gone With The Wind", Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable were playing "Battleship" and all they need was a paper and pencil.
Actually they did state it began with paper and pencil. But it was a quick blip
I miss playing risk! Ugh those were the good old days
Never played like 3 of these games and wtf is risk, how'd it get to #2?
Because you are 3 yes old
SmokinBlue years*
It's one of the best and original strategy board games out there.
Wait. this is a list of board games and Risk WASN'T the top slot? It was literally the best. And unlike Monopoly, it fucking ended
Its basically like the civilization video-game series, but the original and a board game
TOP 10 FEMALE RAPPERS PLEASE !!
in the works
Oprah and Shrek the rest aren't good
***** Not even close. She made the cut, but nowhere near the top.
Signed
Mr X
WatchMojo.com You're a good role model and I would never let you down if something like this happens again. Ban David if he does this one more time, okay. I'm sick of bullies.

Glory Patriot
(I'm referring to the comment made by @David-Lee-Goth)
P.S. Since he won't let me reply, I replied here to inform you.
But they all suck.
Each time I see or hear battleship, I think of "Kabooooom!" or "Sploushh" :P
Man, I feel like playing Risk and Monopoly...I haven't played these games in such a long time...
Pausing at number 2.... Risk should be 1. Not monopoly. Risk is fun. Monopoly isnt.
It is not about whether you think it is more fun. Monopoly is the most successful board game of all
These games are horrible...but I guess they are the most well known, so, good job?
Settlers is good. None of the others are, though.
What's the game they showed right after chess at the beginning
Guys, board games have improved a lot over the past 20 years or so. We don't have to keep playing the same crap that Hasbro has been shoving down our throats for a century. Boardgamegeek has a huge database of board games that you can look through.
Some light board games that I recommend are: Love Letter, Shadow Hunters, and King of Tokyo. Pandemic is also a popular choice. You will never go back to Monopoly et al. after trying some of these modern board games. In fact you might even enjoy playing them, not just every once in a while when there's nothing better to do but in a way that makes you want to keep playing and even join or form board gaming groups to have people to play with.
Hasbro has good board games. I just don't like monopoly. Monopoly is 1 of the worst board games I have ever played.
Why does Monopoly continue to be the most popular board game, other than they keep releasing different themed versions? In truth it's the worst board game on the face of the planet. Allow me to explain. When people play correctly, an average game often lasts about two hours. That's quite a long time, especially since as soon one player starts winning, they can just keep raking in the money until everyone else goes bankrupt. Nobody likes playing poker with a losing hand, now imagine playing with a losing hand for 2 to 4 hours.
There is essentially one winning strategy of buying properties with the highest return for investment. Everyone who has ever played Monopoly should know which properties these are. If everyone is using this strategy then it's pure luck as to who will win. The probability of dice rolls never changes. Seven is always the most likely outcome, followed by six and eight as the next likely. It's ruthless, tedious, boring, and teaches low morals. In other words, how to be a greedy jerk. I can't imagine why anyone would buy this game for their children knowing the arguments that it's going to cause.
+RedKobra Because Monopoly is all about the glory of Capitalism. As a Communist/Marxist it's no wonder you hate Monopoly. Donald Trump was winning at Monopoly as a 6 year old kid against people 3,4,5, even 6 times his age.
Scooter Ahlers Where's your glorious millions douchebag? :D
RedKobra Still living rent free in your mom's basement I see??
I'm not a millionaire - but I am financially SECURE and also have no love of Communism.
Edward Tan There are many ways to make Monopoly more interesting. One way I used to play was shuffling and dealing all the properties in a 3-4 player game. Paying 1/2 of the $1500 you start the game with ($750) and play on from there.
Putting in $500 in free parking + any fines from chance/community chest makes it more interesting too.
Scooter Ahlers It's obviously you love "your version" of the game, and take offense at anyone with a different opinion. Obviously "one of those" Americans.
the top 10 worst collection of boardgames. sigh
Well, the Top 10 Worst Successful Board Games at any rate. :P
When I was younger I loved to play "Agathas last will"
My favorites growing up were Clue, Trouble, Life, and Wizardology,
Most unimaginative list ever. There are some amazing board games out there but you just regurgitate a Toys R Us catalogue.
I owe a Monopoly, Guess Who, Clue, Life, Scrabble, Trivia Pusuit, Chess, The misteries of Pekin, Scene It? and many others, I really want to play right now
Had a feeling it wouldn't be on the list but Stratego is a real fun game
My list would have Scrabble at #2, Clue at #3 and Mastermind somewhere in the mix along with Guess Who.
3:54 what episode is that for the Simpsons? And what season?
That's a very good question. How do the Parker Brothers sleep at night knowing how many friendships and families they've ruined?
The two boardgames I first come to think of before I watched this list was Risk and Monopoly!
'Feds 'N' Heads' is still my favourite board game, closely followed by 'Careers''.
