For me it's a hobby, and probably my only hobby. It is predominantly for the love of music as opposed to collecting just to collect. I think the reason why true music lovers have collections that continually grow is because we are all on a never ending search for great music, for music we love and to discover something new to us or something we've never heard that may take us down an unexplored musical path or open our eyes to an unexamined genre.

For me record collecting is part nostalgia and part research.
I was able to see some of my musical heroes perform live and the thrill put it all into perspective.
I can listen to an album sometimes and hear a new dimension in the artists harmony approach. Music to me is medicine.

True and great to collect records bc you love music. But back in the days, you could collect the old and new and not just old. So I hope vinyl make a full comeback and ppl. start putting new material out on vinyl.
What o find missing was hearing something brand new that most have never heard and that was one of the reason for the chase and money poured into buying new records.

I'm 28, been collecting since I was 10. I've had a rough couple years like a lot of us, and my collection was one of the one of the very few brights spots in my life.
Still kinda is, but things are slowly shifting... my records helped me hold on hold on long enough for that to start.
I'm personally happy that the community has grown so much in the past decade.

It's the facination of handling the media and watching it play. The art work is priceless. I only collect what I like to hear. Coins, stamps, coins...for me, it's records.

Man, so awesome to hear your thoughts about this. Please know this: you are, by all evidence, a good dad, a good husband, and a good dude. Records are objects. They are just about the coolest commercially available objects that I can think of, but object nonetheless. Ultimately, the best things that I have "gotten" out of collecting are relationships and knowledge. Those are two things that will last throughout a lifetime if you nurture them, and they can't be lost, broken, or destroyed by anyone but you. Love ya, brotha!

Record collecting for me is about learning and discovering things and keeping my mind open. I paint or draw while I listen to music. I never spent much on myself, but records are like my friends. I isolated in my room as a kid. Sometimes I did not have paper to draw on so I built LEGO and played records. I used my imagination. I worked in a record store later to get dates and meet people. I have sold off records I loved at times and when I get them back now and then it’s like being young again. I took up collecting records instead of living an unhealthy lifestyle. Your channel brings great joy and I’m glad to support you and your family as you are a kind caring person. God bless you and your family and I hope your shop keeps going. Happy 2nd Anniversary. Thank You.

For what it's worth; I've only been collecting since January '21. Most of the records I own are ones suggested by you and all of those are bands I never heard of or would have listened to if not for you and your channel here. I always watch the videos in hopes of you introducing something new that I can add to my list. If I lived near NC, I would be in there all the time. You get it and because of that, we get it. Thanks very much. You've made a huge difference for me. All this amazing stuff, and I never would have known.

  • @BigRedSpear

I started my collection with records that my parents played for me growing up that shaped my taste in music and connect me to good memories with them. That evolved into thinking about the music I want my son to hear. "All Killer, No Filler" was and still is the guiding principle to building my collection, but I've realized the real theme is 'if something happened to me, what could I leave behind that would allow him to understand who I was, what I appreciated and enjoyed' and let him take from that what he will. It's a bit of a dark scenario, but it is really helpful in terms of building a meaningful collection. I also think about how I followed the musical tastes of other people in middle school; feeling like I should like this or that is what's cool. So much of that was driven by kids who had older siblings they were following. I want to be able to expose my son to the best music and let genre and trends be an afterthought. I want to be able to say, "if you listen to this, you will know what you like and start your own journey instead of following someone else until you discover yourself." That's my philosophy.

Only just watched this, and man does it resonate. As I’m getting older I wonder quite regularly about the size of my collection, worry about the increasing overspill in storage, what I’m gonna do with it all eventually, why I even collect,so it’s awesome to hear Dillon fret about the same thing. Ultimately it’s just an impulsive, second nature thing. Love it. Love this channel. ❤

I guess i’d be classified as a digger with my efforts mostly spent on the hunt, especially local/regional vinyl of any type. I learned early on of the number of rare soul, funk, garage and rockabilly vinyl that came out of my part of the world and also the value other collectors placed upon them. For me, re-discovering a local pressing from the 60’s is where it’s at, whether its a mega rare soul number that hasn’t been seen in 5 decades or some 4 part bluegrass gospel effort that most would value at negative $2…. Both probably had fewer that 200 made and somehow, one survived and ended up in my hands. So cool…

I loved this video. I question myself about collecting records all the time. Lol. I know my friends think I'm crazy. That's why I appreciate the VC so much. I'm grateful to have an understanding spouse as well. We are both blessed in that regard. This hobby brings so much joy to this middle aged woman and it came along when I needed it most. Our daughter went off to college and this filled a void that I was feeling. Music brings joy and there is just something about vinyl that is so special to me. Happy 2nd anniversary and here's to many more.

Record Collecting is part of who you are, it's part of your legacy I'll tell a little bit a story back in 1975 when i was 13 a girl whom i had a crush on broke my heart into a million pieces (Now I had been collecting records since 1968 at the tender age of 6 ) this song came on the radio a little song you may know called "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" by Eric Carmen I bought that 45 because it was how I was feeling at that time and I look back on every Album,45,78 that I have bought since then and I can relate to almost 100% of what I bought and and it's all a part of me and my life experiences

When i went from Cali to Australia to visit my 7 year old Australian daughter we would collect records together at garage sales, we would look for special titles like Sixto Rodriguez which was not avail in America 20 years ago..so ya the thrill of the hunt with your child ; just magic...for her it was like an easter egg hunt! Great memories when i go back and listen to special 12 inch mixes of Midnight Oil/Inxs/Men at Work!

For me it's not only a hobby that I've enjoyed. But now it's being to share with my Family. I have a niece that collets records. We are able to talk about our collections, our grails. But it's great to she her face light up when talk them. Then there is my friend that owns a record store.. We are about the same age. So he (Is like you. He is always looking out for me ) knows just about what type of music that I like or I just go the record shop just to shoot the sheet with him. I'm just so grateful to part of this Huge Vinyl Community. I luv your stories about records that you found. To the point where I will say to my shelf "I wish I could a copy of this or that.. Then a few days, I will find a descent copy or a re-issued or even a copy that is from another country, that I will be so stoked, that I will be listing to it for hours on in. Keep up the Great Job Dillion. Thank You so much for sharing & for being a part of my life. Take Care Bro & God Bless 😃👍

I started collecting this year, like many other newly homebound people. It keeps me sane while working from home. I set a strict monthly vinyl budget, and I rarely buy a record for more than $15… usually closer to $10. I also notice over time which records I don't listen to, and regardless of money lost I will trade those at a local store. I like freeing up shelf space, supporting a store, and keeping a tight collection of playable records. Great video confession, thank you!

It would be awesome to get some vids explaining to the casual collector how to go from having a bunch of random records including some new repressings and a motley mix of old second hand records, to a more serious and deliberate collection. Like, how to know what to pay for used records, how to know if it’s a first press or an early edition, also for new records, which ones are just digital cds copied to vinyl and which are nice properly mastered editions etc

I can't begin to tell you how parallel our love of records is. Being a good bit older then you my journey is much the same. As a child belonged to the columbia mail order service and wish I had taken much greater advantage of that. Had a pretty extensive collection. Came home from the Air Force with Japanese additions as well as a killer stereo system. Ended up selling it all early in my marriage for the extra monies. In hind sight it may not have been financially worth it but its done. At 67 have started resurrecting that collection. Find your philosophy extremely contagious! Keep doing what you're doing and honestly believe you'll be richly rewarded , even if not in a monetarily fashion. Our likes also run parallel with guitars. Currently have 7 and constantly fight adding to that collection. Ever think of franchising? Philly suburbs could use such an outlet! Best wishes, Ted.

Man, like you said, the way I think about you and the other brilliant people in the VC is how lucky we all are to have you. People with your level of expertise who are willing to share it with the world are hard to come by. It's like if Kevin Gray went to work at a fiber optic factory instead in the 1970's (OK maybe there were no fiber optic factories then but you get the analogy) - that would have been an immeasurable loss in the world today. It's as hard for me to even put into words how much your knowledge of music and passion for records have shaped everyone who has been in your store, watched your videos (including me) and will perhaps influence many thousands of people who are yet to discover your channel and learn from you.
I hope you bury your doubts for good and continue doing what you love. It's a beautiful thing.

A year old vid, so ya probs won't see this.. but that's cool... Thank you for this. Loved the vid, and the message. I'm 46 years old.. Always loved my music.. But Im a newb to record collecting.. Literally 2 weeks.. Random convo with the Wife a few weeks ago brought up an old Reader's Digest Elvis box set my parents had when I was a kid. They listened to the LP's, and I basically made the picture of Elvis with the back of the covers. Needless to say, I found Discogs, and ended up buying the box set. Next thing I knew, I bought a turntable and speakers.. Long story short.. I'm smitten.. Obsessed even.. with getting Vinyl versions of the CD albums I listened to growing up. Thanks for your vids.. You're probs one of the most down to earth, genuine guys I've come across whilst researching vinyl and collecting. Keep it up buddy!

Great Video. I can relate (maybe too much). I cannot go to a record store walking out with nothing. My big thing now is combing through the $2.00 bins and finding some obscure or one that I want in good condition. I too have to consistently re-access what I am doing to not loose reality. I am almost 70 and I still have some records from as far back as 1963. I have to remind myself EVERYTHING is temporary.

Collecting records has only recently become important to me even though I started buying them in 2019, but it became important to me when my brother and dad got into collecting and we all have different reasons. My dad’s trying to rebuild his collection that he had in the 70s and 80s that he sold off, my brother collects them because he loves lots of prog and David Bowie and that kind of music and wants to physically own that music. And I like collecting them to share my music with my family and friends and to really enjoy and value that I took for granted by just streaming it all the time, and through collecting I’ve discovered music I would have never discovered if I hadn’t.

I'm late to the party with this comment a year after this was posted, but your video does strike a chord. I'm also late to the party when it comes to record collecting having been in the compact disc then streaming wilderness for decades. More than anything, collecting vinyl LPs has revitalized my music listening and appreciation. While I'm riding the high of being a new collector I'd say my enjoyment has doubled. I'm sure it will come back to earth a bit after a while when the novelty wears off. But there will always be new aspects of record collecting I'll discover to keep my interest. Regarding what you shared in this video, it comes across very heartfelt as all your videos do. Some of it is personal to you (being in the business etc) and some is universal. I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts on record collecting. By doing so you continue adding good knowledge and advice to the community. Thanks.

Your outlook is spot on. Been buying records since I was a kid in the 70's and have never taken a break from it all these years (even during the vinyl purges of the 90's). Just love it for the music. Is that OG press cool? Of course, but I'll buy that $20 repress every time as opposed to that $100 OG. Keep your collection under control, don't let it affect other areas of your life. It's just records, just stuff. Just like any other habit/hobby, keep it in perspective!

Great video, Dillon. I have many friends who love music but few who understand the joys of collecting vinyl so I have to say that the idea of a community is not familiar to me, except maybe on line. I have a friend who goes metal detecting. He finds coins, some dating back to Roman times, in the fields of the English Midlands, where I live. He talks about the thrill of a connection with the past, with people long gone who handled the coins and with transactions they might have made. Vinyl gives me a similar pleasure as it provides an opportunity to revisit times and trends that are distant in geography and years. Somehow, the smell, the art work and the surface crackle enhances the aesthetic experience and re-opens doors long closed. No matter the genre, each area of musical endeavour is represented. Streaming makes a broad spectrum of musical experience available to many, but it does nothing to facilitate time travel to the same degree as vinyl. Thanks for taking the time to make your videos. I always find them fun!

    Dillon,
I watch all of your videos, but never comment. Just had to on this one. To me, it's all about the music, but thats not why I'm writing. I'm local to your shop and since you've opened, I haven't stepped foot in any other local stores. Your shop is amazing, but the primary reason I only come to Noble is that you are so real and genuine, and just a good dude. It seems as if that's becoming more rare as time goes on and I am proud to support your store and will only spend my money there. Thanks for all you do and congrats on 2 years! I'll see you soon!

I truly appreciate your energy, honesty and contagious enthusiasm about music and the vinyl format. I grew up in the 60s where listening to my parents records (The King and I, Camelot, Roamin' in the Gloamin') were part of the living room space every weekend. Boss Radio blasting on my transistor radio played my kid-influenced hits (Good Lovin', Sunshine of Your Love, Snoopy & the Red Baron) and then the quantum leap to FM arrived in time in the early 70s for the sonic explosion of many bands I listen to at this point of my life (Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan). I had given away my records in the 80s when the migration to CDs happened (and I even had one of those 200 CD carousels where you never knew which disc was in which slot!). My music listening happened more while driving or traveling by train or air. At home it happened as a second though almost - just occasionally hooking up a 3.5 mm plug to a soundbar. Then I realized about 2 years ago that I couldn't really hear things in stereo.... so I turned to UA-cam and found an entire universe of like-minded souls yearning for true music in its best format - which happens (ironically) to be a 20th century format that somehow managed to fight off extinction. I invested in a really nice system, and have gotten to around 300 albums. I like the hunt, the exploration, the quest for getting that particular artist - but I also feel I can't always be in buying more and more when I haven't listened to everything I already have. I enjoy seeing the album artwork, and exploring new (to me) genres of music like electronica, Latin jazz and post rock has been soul-lifting. Music gives us so much in terms of emotion and feeling and enrichment - just like your UA-cam channel Dillon! Thanks for keeping the sound of vinyl vibrantly alive in everything you do on your fantastic channel.

Enjoyed watching this video as I do many of your others. If I’m ever in the NC area down from NJ I’m sure I’ll be visiting the shop. I see all the records going you’re putting out on Sat and wish I can be there 😀. After reconnecting with my vinyl in 2020 it has reignited the passion for music again unlike my experience for the most part
with just streaming. I truly feel more connected to the music as it requires time to really listen and appreciate it all including the artwork. The fun debates and conversations with friends over bands. The nostalgia it brings. The joy Insee it brings others. The discovery through digging for records. The joy of just stepping into a record shop especially with my daughters when they want to come along. Sharing it all with family and friends and making new friends in the Vinyl community. It’s definitely brought a lot of joy. Thank you.

My dad had a mono hi-fi which was very hi-tech at the time. It had a massive speaker and sounded great. By the time I came along in 1953, there was already a sizable collection of albums and 45s in the family collection. Dad was into folk music like the Kingston Trio, Mom was into Broadway musicals, an older brother with all of Elvis’ records, and a middle brother with Simon & Garfunkel, Bee Gees, etc. We learned to appreciate a variety of musical genres and styles & encouraged to develop our own tastes. Somehow I inherited all these great old recordings and they feel like old friends and family. I’m still interested in finding new music with an open mind.

Dillon you're an inspiration. About 5 yrs ago I had all my albums (about 500) stolen :including an unpeeled banana cover that was signed by Lou Reed when I met him. I'm not seeking pity or anything. I will say this. Somebody stole that album. Ouch! What they didn't take is the fact and the memory of meeting Lou.

Firstly I enjoy the music. I don't play any instruments but music has been such a big part of my life and I am probably listening to it 10+ hours a day. Secondly I enjoy the thrill of the hunt. I know I don't have to explain how exciting and joyful it can be to finally find a record you've been after for for months/years. Along with that comes sharing it with the community. Being 23 years old and into psych and hard rock means many of my close friends have no interest into the music I like, but I have met many people in the record community who are now friends that I can share my finds with, and I love hearing about their finds.

Awesome video and perspective Dylan. Totally align with you on the community aspect both in selling to new record friends and meeting locals and vibing over music. Most people I meet are over 55 and are geniunely surprised when we can have a back and forth over some of their favourite music from their youth.
I went to this 80 year old mans house to pick out some stuff and we probably were talking for close to half an hour just on Eddie Hazel's guitar virtuosity (and yes, he did have a copy of Maggotbrain). Little things like that have added up in the year I have done this, and It definitely feels excellent to look back at all these interactions as a very fulfilling thing.
records are silly, but dang it they are too much fun.

Great video, bro. I can’t really articulate all the reasons I buy vinyl… but that idea of “bringing joy” definitely resonates. Flicking through records in the shop, finding something I want, bringing it home and listening to it, telling my friends and family what I’ve found, and trying to communicate why I think this album is so cool… all these things just bring joy. It feels pure. Keep the great content coming, man.

A very nice video this one! Speaking deeper about vinyl collecting! I collect elpees since I was 14( my first lp O.M.D. "Organisation"). And I had my first single when I was 12( The Police "De do do do de da da da"). I become 54 in December. So more than 40 years of record collecting. It brings indeed joy and hapiness. It gives you mental strength to go on. I had heartaches but the music pulled me always through.
Around 2005 I sold a good part of my record collection due to financial reasons. But afterwards I felt bad about it. It was like selling your own child. Around 2016 I again sold a good part of my collection and again I did not fell good afterwards. The last 5 years I ve buying records that I had before. Like the fantastic album of The Gun Club "The Las Vegas Story" . And it gives a rush of adrenalin to your head when you find a record that you have always wanted. I had that with Throbbing Gristle and their "20 Jazz Funk Greats". and "Ace Of Spades" of Motorhead on a flea market for 1 Euro! That lp of TG, I listened to it in the 80s, it was a record from a friend. And what a big joy to see this record back then 30 years later !! One moment I said, now I stop buying records! I could keep it up some time, but then I bought 1 record again. And then further in time 2 records at a time, 3,4. Record collecting is a kind of addiction. But you have to draw a limit. Now I have a limit. My favourite place to find a record is on a record fair where you can dig a lot and find true treasures. So I found in a somewhere hidden cardboard box on a record fair the first 12" of Executive Slacks with "The Bus" on it. In 2019 I found to my surprise the album of Dave Ball "Instrict tempo" , wiith wonderful vocal contributions of Genesis P. Orridge and Gavin Friday(The virgin Prunes). That made my day! Going to a fair or a record shop it brings a good feeling cause probably you gonna find a very nice record(s). And it's indeed very nice when you can discover bands by someone and also when you can give someone tips to listen to that or that band. I grew up as an adolescent in the 80s, and I was a new waver. I listened to new wave radio Radio Terheide and went each Wednesday to a record shop searching and buying records. The Sisters Of Mercy, The Cult, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Bollock Brothers, Killing Joke, T.C. Matic, Fad Gadget, Front 242, A Split Second, The Neon Judgement, The Cure, Alien Sex Fiend, The Cassandra Complex.... Insanely number of great new wave bands in the 80s with very wonderful music!!! If I look for records it's mostly for new wave records . Greetings from Belgium.

Collecting records is fun. I enjoy hanging with my best friend Kevin, talking about music. We've been having this conversation since the mid-80's.
I look forward to us coming in every Saturday. I look forward to talking with you each week. It feels like home. I think you are right, it's about community that makes it really fun.
I also really love that you actually pay attention. Other places I go, I get a little polite conversation. When I come to your store, I get discussion with someone who shares a passion for music & records.
I also love that you did those right by your Dead box sets. In fact I was there Saturday looking for that 1st Jerry Garcia record. I couldn't find it. I couldn't stop thinking about it and went back Sunday and found it!! To find a pristine Pittman pressing. That's a holy moly for me!!

I'm almost 70 years old , and started buying records when the Beatles came out and started playing guitar at that time. So I've had 2 lifetime hobbies , both revolving around music and what I enjoy most is sharing that. It's still a thrill to find "that" record and find out about new music , and I still enjoy playing and owning a lot of guitars. I feel like the main reason I collect vinyl is that I could always access most music completely for free on the internet for so long and there are albums that meant so much to me that now that i'm more financially stable, I want to give back to these artists. Its also almost magical to me to walk into a record store, browse for an hour, and buy 5-10 records. Live in CO now but born in Charlotte and want to visit your store so bad. I started collecting to get exposure to new sounds and music I hadn’t heard and didn’t know about, which I couldn’t do during the first 15 months of COVID with no live shows. It was a lifesaver and I right away made a couple connections on FB with other collectors which was great. I started selling to feed the monster because like a lot of people got carried away. I love the videos of others and now have even done 2 of my own! Watching your channel is like hanging out with a friend, which can be kinda hard sometimes. I laughed the other day when I was watching another one of your videos and my girlfriend said “why would anyone ever need that many records” and it’s totally true. Nobody needs them. I just love them. I’ve recently started selling a good amount of my collection and it’s brought more joy than I’ve ever had with records. I hope someday to open a shop as well. I think you hit the nail on the head with this video. I initially started collecting records when I was a high school freshman, but it got to the point where that was all that I was thinking about and I sadly placed my identity in vinyl collecting. Long story short, I sold off my collection for many different reasons. It was affecting my relationship with God, my bank account, and so many other things. Fast forward to March of 2021, I went to Amoeba Music in Hollywood, CA with a friend of mine just to look around, and I ended up walking out with a new turntable, speakers, and two records! I realized that I missed collecting vinyl and I had matured in my relationships and how I spent my money to the point where I could figure out how to be a wise vinyl collector. Yah, there were some records that I sold off that I wish I could get back, but I would never reverse my initial decision because now I know how to collect vinyl and still maintain all other aspects of my life. Now I have a bigger collection than I initially had before, and I am loving every minute of it!

I love music and have been collecting since 1976. Sometimes I will binge. For example, last week I bought 15+ albums. That is too many to absorb in a week. Sometimes I get caught up in the hype of a release even when It is not my bag. Now, I just buy records I know I will enjoy in that format and other stuff I will buy the CD or download. I collect first and foremost for the music.

I’ve gone through most of the same thought processes you have. I’m at a pretty good place now - I’m in it for the discovery (what’s in the box, what new to me music is in there, is there something fabulous in the box) as well as creating the opportunity for community. Our town had a record store for a few years but those folks needed to do different things. Fast forward three years (now) and we have a few places in antique shops but no place to really hang and talk music and records. I volunteer at a local non-profit used book store by researching & pricing donated records. To make the selection better, I add in what goodies I can find at garage sales. Kinda like having your own record store without the overhead. People are digging & enjoying their experience, which is what it’s about. Would still like to have a dedicated store for used records & equipment but this will do for now. Have also been able to find folks of similar stripe that occasionally get together for listening & swap gatherings. All to the good - don’t let it run you out of house & money and it’ll be fine. Thoughtful video, and a good thread in general. Thank you & keep up the good work. I def. want to come shop if I get to that part of the country.

The nostalgia and interaction that one is able to have with music through vinyl is second to known. Just the notion that you could dig through a crate and never know what you will find, the artwork etc. Vinyl records have a very long life span compared to other music formats in my opinion, hence why I love collecting them and is music that I can pass on.
