    Transcript:
Hey, I’m Donald Bell for Cool Tools, and today I’m going to show you three types of replacement tips for your spray paint cans. If your cans get clogged, or you want more control over how you spray, I’m going to show you some options you can get on Amazon. So here’s the problem I come across. A lot of spray paint brands use this wide, female style cap. When these get clogged, you can throw them in a jar of paint thinner overnight, but that doesn’t help you in the moment. Initially, I went looking for some cheap replacement caps to have handy, but found them hard to get, or oddly expensive. What I did find, though, is that you can buy up these more common male type caps for pennies, and push them into an adapter. These are the three I found on Amazon. This one is a cheap, plastic adapter that came with a bag of 30 tips for around $12. Then there’s these cool, orange winged adapters -- 5 of these plus 5 tips were about $16. And then these heavy duty aluminum adapters that come with keychain rings and five tips -- these were $19. It’s also interesting to note that these were all made to serve graffiti artists. All of them include a type of cap called a fat cap, which puts out a wide spray great for making big lines on a wall. But that variety pack I showed with the 30 tips also includes a bag of what they call outline tips, which put out a more focused spray. You can fall down the rabbit hole with this stuff and order all kinds of specialty tips. Just know that with any of these options, you’re going to notice a different spray pattern than you’d find with a conventional tip, unless you’re plugging in your own. So here’s how the cheap little plastic one works. You push on the tip you want, then place it on any male type spray can, and it does the job. I just found that this one was a little leaky for me. The seal between the cap and the adapter just wasn’t as good as the others. By comparison, these orange caps seem to provide a better fit. Plus, they give you a different way to spray that you might find easier on your fingers. The orange color is also nice because you’re less likely to leave it behind on a can when it’s done. The same can’t be said about these aluminum adapters. I love how these feel, and they look great and work great, but the first thing I’d do with these is paint them some obnoxiously bright color. Otherwise, you’re going to forget these on an old can. So there you go, that’s a look at three different types of spray paint nozzle adapters. While I’m talking spray paint, let me throw in one other cool tool here that I’ve been using a lot. This is Rustoleum’s 2 in 1 sandable filler primer. It’s meant as a kind of lightweight bondo paint for taking scratches out of cars, but it’s really popular in the 3D printing and prop-making community. When you want to smooth the lines out of a 3D print, or the seams in something you’ve mocked up, this paint, plus a few passes with sandpaper, can help you get a smooth surface. It’s not cheap at $17 a can, but you can usually find it a little cheaper in stores. Just make sure to get the kind that says sandable -- that’s key. Alright, that does it for this video, you can find links to everything down in the video description and you can see thousands of reader-recommended tools like these at Cool-Tools.org.

Its funny hearing some one who knows nothing about the game talk about adapters lol here is some advice. For even coats i would use a dot cap. Like grey blue etc. Legos ny fats boston fats stoners arent ginna do much. Also you might wanna try the A1 adapter from NAKA. The metal one ia calles the classic and 1 major advantage is that it wont give way and break seal with use. And i have it on my keys along with a scribe lol had mine for 6 years till i lost it in a yard.

I'm a minute into this video and I already want to stop and thank you. Every time I'm in the middle of a paintjob and one of these stupid female cans that you can't unclog by turning upside down jam I mean to search amazon to find a bunch of replacement. You saved me what would have been a frustrating search by showing this cool solution.

You're welcome! One more tip I neglected to include in the video is that with all these adapters, the design really benefits from you adjusting your grip so that you're squeezing down on the adapter and not the tip. The "bunny ears" grip I do on the winged version is really the same grip you should use on all of them, or else the tip can jam a little.

Hello. I am completely new to spray painting. I bought a grey metallic spray paint and was given the cap detached from the can. I’ve tried attaching it to the can but it just sprays everywhere. How do I get the cap on?

    • @glytch5

@@hyp3r-systems838 The answer is yes you can... as I finally bought some and it works. The fan caps that come on sparymax 2k cans and most good quality automotive/home improvement paints. The fat circular tips are good for art stuff, but leave a ton of orange peel for making a smooth surface. Putting my fan caps on rustoleum cans has improved their performance dramatically. For what you do these types of caps are probably not beneficial. Not sure about the krylon caps... never used em.
