I love that you didn’t overhype them IPS screens. The fact that you have to thoroughly inspect from all angles or compare to another console is enough to prove that it’s a marginal difference. Also 100% on just playing the games in any way possible, especially since Nintendo has decided that they don’t see a value in selling 3DS games directly anymore. Awesome video my dude 🔥
I started writing this script thinking I would lean toward recommending everyone get a 3DS with IPS displays. After I started looking at them side by side, I changed my mind. They really aren’t all that different. I had always played on one with TN screens, so I kind of already knew the IPS screens were overhyped. I’m glad more people are agreeing with me. I thought I was going to get a lot of backlash for it. Play however you want. Man, it seems like there are people who can only accept games being played on original hardware. If it plays the games, who cares. I used to be against emulation until I opened my eyes and realized how great it is! You can do some pretty cool stuff with emulators.
also from my experience, I would say it is better to get a 3ds with a tn screen. I've noticed that ips screens tend to have really inconsistent white balance whereas tn screens usually have a more consistent white balance. yeah this is also really minor but a bad white balance is worse than bad viewing angles, ofc this is just my opinion
@@ostrichesandgin8570 It comes down to, if you are happy with TN, you won't ever notice IPS. But when you do, it's a huge difference with color and clarity. It should be overblown and hyped up because it is a big difference, but only if you have them side by side.
@@PJ-sv4iw I've seen people say this, but I'm not convinced. I'm not saying you're wrong. Maybe I'm just not sensitive to it. Hear me out; I've spent more time on the 3DS than any other console in existence. I got my first 3DS in January 2012. Almost at launch. I've spent 11 years playing every combination of 3DS screen Nintendo has ever made, including models with IPS displays. I have a few of them that I've spend significant amounts of time playing. I fly around the USA for my job. While I'm traveling I play the 3DS for hours waiting in the airports, on airplanes, and in my hotel rooms. I still play it very regularly. I just spend three days from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM shooting these consoles in the light and the dark side by side straight on and at an angle for this video and I can confidently say that none of them looked that different from each other. Both had the same clarity. You can see it in the footage. The only difference I could see what that the IPS displays look like they had a warmer tone to them. Maybe I'm really not that sensitive to it. Again, I'm not calling you wrong. I hope this doesn't come off as being negative or mean.
Thanks to homebrew there is actually a way to get better colors and contrast on a tn panel. On the latest versions of luma if you enter the Rosalina menu there’s a feature called screen filters. Within this feature you can actually tweak your screens gamma values and temperature in order to eliminate the washed out look and increase color vibrance, just make sure you save the settings so it applies on startup. Unfortunately it still doesn’t fix the issues viewing angle’s. I’ve done some tweaking with it myself and it’s made a night and day difference on my 2ds XL.
@@NeanderMeanderI’ve actually done a bit of testing of my own by taking a look the tn panel on my old 3ds xl compared to my 2ds xl. From what I’ve seen the default temperature on the 3ds had a slightly warmer hue meanwhile the 2ds xl has a more neutral tone that’s closer to a pure white, though the difference in temperature isn’t major. As far as gamma goes I’ve found best gamma values lie around 1.25 - 1.33 in order to get a similar vibrance and contrast to a ips panel. In my case the sweet spot ended up being 1.27 but with there being so much variation with these 3ds screens it’s honestly just up to the user and whatever they think looks best. Though in the end it’s not like having one screen or the other is detrimental to the playing experience.
It didn't take me long. I've loved the 3ds and DS family and it's been my favorite game console period since I first played in 2017. I was 9 and I usually played Wii. I never knew about it before I got my 2DS.
I paid 100 bucks a few years back for a N3DSXL with top IPS bottom TN, which is more than good enough for me. I regretted the purchase at the time, but I’m so glad that I got it now. I’ve had so much fun modding it and revising so many classics.
Wow! Only $100!? That's a really good deal now. I know how you feel. I spent $200 for most of mine brand new and I thought I had wasted my money because I had so many. Some of the special editions are currently worth insane amounts of money. I have no regrets.
This is an excellent video! There's a lot of hype around IPS screens in 3ds communities, but whenever there's an actual discussion about the screens the general consensus seems to be that most people mainly want dual IPS screens for the flex of having them, and not so much for the actual screen quality. My New 3ds XL is a top TN, bottom IPS, and the difference between the screens is barely noticeable. Like you, the sentimental value of it is what is most important to me. My father went out of his way to buy me the Galaxy edition system after my original red New 3ds XL was stolen. Nintendo replaced it with another red New 3ds XL because it was still under warranty and I was able to prove the theft had occured. My father went and got the Galaxy edition for me, and when the replacement red 3ds arrived he kept it and ended up buying Animal Crossing New Leaf to play on it. It holds a special place in my heart because of that.
I really don't see much of a difference. Even after filming them in the light and dark I couldn't hardly tell them apart. I think people just like having the absolute best, even if it's slightly better. Like you, I love my consoles because of what they mean to me. Most of them have stories attached to them. I made a video a while ago that went over most of them. I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way. Thank you for sharing your story. Your Dad seems like a really good guy.
I never knew about the variants. 'Had to boot mine up to check, and it looks like it's double TN for me. 🤷♂️ I'm already over it. With how unusually expensive they've become, I'm lucky to have it at all.
Couldn't agree more with you on the standard N3DSXL interior being sterile. I recently swapped out the cstick, circle pad, and outer shells with white alternatives on my black N3DSXL. Along with replacing my ABXY buttons with the coloured ones like on the N3DS and I'm loving the look.
That sounds awesome! I would love to see a picture of it. Those standard models are so boring on the inside. I like white consoles though, so that’s probably why I primarily use my Fire Emblem New 3DS XL
@@johndou423 That sucks, sorry to hear it. The N3DSXL can be kind of a nightmare with so many ribbon cables, especially all the ones that come through the hinge.
button and stick mods are gonna be up for me when I get my white n3dsxl. I wanted the lime one, its one of my favorite colors, but those go for marginally more unless I get TN panels, which I'm by far and large not a fan of.
I loved the video. I also loved what you said about the little details that matter to you in your hardware, the length of time you've been using it, the little scratches and the stories behind all of that, like me, I really take care of my things and establish some kind of connection with them.
Thank you so much for watching! I do that with every console I get. We spend so much time with these things, it's tough not to develop a connection with them.
Hey mate, I really enjoyed this video, im not an expert in videomaking but i really loved the cinematics, the storytelling, the music, your voiceover. It conveid your emotions for this console and i'm sincere, it moved me. I'd watch this kind of stuff all day long. Great great job
If people really want IPS screens so much, then why don't they just mod it? It seems way easier to gamble on $20 screens than pay the price of a Nintendo Switch OLED just to get IPS screens.
I'm more surprised no one has offered to make 3rd party IPS screens as replacements, they're in fairly high demand so I would assume there's money to be made, many one day it'll happen
From what I hear, the New 3DS XL is a bitch to get into and put back together without damaging it, so it probably isn't worth it if you don't let yourself get obsessed with IPS mania
Dude…. I don’t know how you do it… These videos are some of the most satisfying videos out there. You make me want 15 variations of the 3DS every time I see your videos.
I'm so glad you like them! When I film them, I also want more consoles. I love them so much. I'm happy to know there are other people out there like myself.
I think the problem here is people need to own both consoles to see the difference if it's an IPS screen or not after that they'll always know going forward, anyone who hasn't had an IPS screen or vice versa would not be able to tell
I think you’re right. Seeing both next to each other helps. Though, I still have a hard time seeing it even though I have both. Maybe it depends on the person.
Nowadays, Luma 3DS custom firmware actually has a feature where you can color correct the screens to the point where a TN panel could somewhat pass as an IPS screen minus viewing angles. I have a new 3DS XL that has a bottom TN screen and a top IPS screen, and it made a world of difference.
Thank you for pointing out the screen differences of the TN and IPS panels of the 3DS. But, man, congrats on your superb editing!! All aspects in your video are so pleasant to watch. Neutral and black colors. Simple but elegant. Nice narrator voice that you have. And more important, your own experiences with your consoles and accessories. I have to note that your pauses between phrases are great. You have a new subscriber!
Great video as always man. Always thought provoking and well shot. I agree with the aesthetic being important and I actually prefer my “new” 3ds (the smaller Black Friday one) because the buttons are colored. I just like the look and feel of that particular model. One cool thing about these videos is that it shows that people still love these older devices
Thank you! They are quite a bit of work to put together, reading comments like this is amazing. I also like the feel and size of the New 3DS. It just feels really good to play. The colored buttons are also an awesome touch. I wish the other models had them.
I loved the part about being sentimental about these things one of my biggest regrest is trading in my dsi xl and 3ds xl into gamestop for all of like 30 dollars each when those consoles meant so much to me im glad im in a place now where i just recently purchased both of those consoles again same color and everything but it hard not to miss my original consoles from when i was a kid, great video man
There is a huge flaw for me with the TN screen: "Ghosting" I recently got my hands on a sealed New 3ds XL on eBay and i had the amazing suprise getting a dual ips unit! I already had a classic size New 3ds with Dual TN screens, so i was super happy and the first thing i have done was to run shovel knight on both to compare. Shovel knight is a great benchmark for testing the ghosting/blur on your 3ds screens, because its a 2d pixel art game with a lot of parallax! Verdict: I can assure you that ghosting is far less noticeable and awkward on IPS panel. If you got the chance to test and compare, go ahead! Pixel update is so better on IPS, it's still not perfect of course in comparison with modern IPS and OLED displays on newer hardware like the Switch, but trust me when i say that between a 3ds TN and 3ds IPS this is night and day! Sorry if the english is bad, i hope i didn't made to much spelling mistake on my comment and that everyone understand it!
IMO the more important thing to hunt for is a 3DS without really yellowing on the panel. Everyone seems to focus on IPS vs. TN but I've got two N3DSLLs and the bottom panel looks like it's got flux enabled lmao.
Loved the part reminiscing about getting your fav 3ds, I like how the more i travel with it, it becomes more personal with all the memories of playing the games in different locations,
I'm glad you liked that part. They really do become more personal when you travel around with them. I'm always think about where I was when I play mine.
I love your style of video and content presentation It got me to pickup my New 3DS XL and start a new game on Link Between Worlds. Thank you for that. Looking forward to your next video!
This is just a random video I clicked on being a proud owner of a newly bought New Nintendo 3DS (the normal size one) and I have to say your video is so amazing, emotional, raw. It really made me appreciate the little things on my games, systems and everything I own. Thank you for making this!
I am so glad you watched the video! It's really great having you here. I do my best to present something a little different from what else is out there. I hope you stick around for future videos. I'm working on a new one right now.
Boy, you last few words about which is your favourite condole is powerful and so right! He’s not about which screen type is better - it’s about which console you feel the strongest connection with for various reasons.
I sometimes sit on these scripts for a few days thinking about what message I want to send. that one came to me and I really liked it. I'm glad you did too! Thank you so much for watching
man the 3DS is such a sick console. I definitely don't think it got the love it deserved when it was still supported but it's easy to tell that people are looking back at the console very fondly these days.
Just found out that my red new 3ds xl Ive had since middle school has both TN screens. I'm weirdly happy though, it just means that I loved and still love playing on it despite TN even after Ive graduated college. It truly is a magical device and I can't wait to keep on gaming on it forever!
It really is a magical device. I think TN screens are perfectly fine. They look almost exactly the same as the consoles with IPS displays. I think the whole topic between the two screen types is way overblown.
If you're into PC gaming and monitors at all, then you know both TN and IPS panels have their pros and cons. A fast TN display can make a slower IPS display look like a blurring/ghosting mess in motion. Considering Nintendo's choice of panels for the New 3DS XL was so random they ended up mixing display technologies, I wouldn't be shocked at all if some of the TN panels they used actually look better in motion than some of the IPS panels they used. Viewing angles and brighter colors aren't everything.
Thank you so much for writing this comment. I don't think many people understand this. The whole discussion around this topic has gotten way out of hand. I wanted to make this video to shed some light on it. Most people can't even tell the difference anyway.
Great video! I lucked out and recently got a dual IPS model for a normal price, I wouldn't pay the higher price but it is cool. I don't think it's worth the higher asking price, but like you said a cool novelty
I may have traded using my Pikachu New 2DS XL that has a corruption data issue to hacking and using my old 2DS Mario Maker edition I purchased and kept sealed for years, but it makes me realize the beauty of consoles cosmetically, rather than the minor specs that you describe. The new 3DS and 3DS XL basic models may feel "sterile" like you mentioned, but something about the 2DS' cosmetic designs always made me feel like home, my own personal console. It made me feel like it belonged to me and I believe that's very important job for a handheld to give, to make it feel like yours.
Very well said. I like the way you worded this. A console needs to connect with you personally. Even if that's the standard colors. If it resonates with you, that's amazing.
Little update on my 2ds journey in 2023: Finished almost every game on the 3ds family of consoles I wanted to play. I am reserving myself Luigi's Mansion 1-2 for October (horror/halloween-themed month), otherwise I have backed up all my games and continue to play some of them on the Steam Deck (now that the Citra emulator has finally started supporting Vulkan, which means the Steam Deck has a good time emulating 3ds). Great console...will probably a second special edition one when I travel to Japan next year.
Awesome! I need to play the first two Luigi’s Mansion games too. I’ve heard they are really good. I just about bought a SteamDeck last week when they were on sale. I just couldn’t do it though. If they go on sale again, I’ll probably spring for it.
@@NeanderMeander do it man, you will have a great time :) It's become my favourite console ever, just so much you can do with it and the performance and comfort of it are just perfect for me.
Bought my dual ips new xl over a year ago just before I think 3ds got a huge price increase which I’m in love with because I went from my original model to the best
I just got lucky and didn't realise they all weren't dual ips when I fist got my new 3ds xl back in like 2017. just a regular black one but turned out it was dual ips. I took good care of it but it just quit booting up a few months ago after I left it in sleep mode while playing Crystal on the VC and the battery died (after charging it, just blue light, no further response... I researched every possible reason and way to fix it short of replacing the motherboard, nothing worked). I finally sent it in for repair and they couldn't fix and didn't have any new 3ds xl to replace with. sent me back a dang new 2ds xl. >:(
I believe that my 3ds is TN, the colours wash out a little but hardly noticeable and I have an old pc monitor released like 18 years ago, that also is TN and that is next to unreadable when looking at it from the side, so I'd say the TN 3ds is still pretty good
The 3DS's with TN screen look really nice. I've always wondered what the big deal was between them. It turns out there not all that different. I think they are a little on the cooler side with the colors compared to the IPS screens that have a more warm look to them.
I like how you pointed out that the screen difference between the 2 isn't actually that noticeable. Truly only those who wants the novelty or the best of the best would go for it. Personally I have the clear 2DS blue with grey buttons. Would like to upgrade to the better looking zelda/pokemon clear colors though but I can't justify the purchase since I stopped playing with the system much.
The difference really isn’t that much. It’s crazy how this topic has taken off lately. People are searching high and low for those IPS displays. They don’t really make playing a 3DS any better. I play on one with an upper TN screen and never felt like I was missing out on anything. That crystal 2DS is awesome! I loved mine. When I use it in my videos I’m always taken back at how awesome it is.
@@NeanderMeander I think one can know which screen they have through the settings. Yes the crystal blue system is awesome but my dumbass removed the plastic rubber off the home button because it yellowed out. How do you keep the white systems and home buttons from yellowing out? Your systems look so pristine!
@@lucykaede5863 I've never had a problem with my systems yellowing. Even my Super Nintendo never yellowed over time. Maybe it has to do with living in a really dry climate. Though I travel to humid locations often for work. I keep them in cases, maybe that helps.
@@NeanderMeander Great mention on the climate I never took that into consideration. I live in a tropical country near the equator maybe that explains why I see a lot of yellowed systems here.
They are so similar. I hear so many people talk about how big the difference is, I'm sure even they have a hard time telling them apart. Thank you for watching!
I bought my first 2DS XL one month ago. It's a white system with orange buttons and I really like it. I have a Switch and a PSP wich is my favourite handheld ever, but maaaan the 2DS is such a nice device. I played Super Mario 3D Land, Star Fox 64 3D (such a great game), Mario Kart 7, New Super Mario Bros 2, Donkey Kong 94, DKC Returns, the mini games for the original NSMB and can't wait to play Ocarina of Time for the first time.
I just picked up that same New 2DS XL! It looks really good in person! You'll have to let me know what you think of Ocarina of Time. I played it for the first time on the 3DS as well
It really is crazy! I sometimes think we're living in an alternate reality. I never thought they would ever go for as much as they are. How are things going for you?
@@NeanderMeander Seriously! I am good, friend. Enjoying a new season in my life and my 3DS is joining me for the ride. Despite having so many great consoles INCLUDING the Steam Deck, I find the 3DS is THE perfect companion. I am happy to have a 3DS with an IPS main screen and a TN touchscreen. I can deal with that. I'll have to check the Majora 3DS to see what it has.
January 2025. I paid $225 for a Lime Green Japanese TN that was close to Mint Condition. I feel like it was worth it. Technically, I would have paid more at release.
Wonder if you’re going to go through the trouble to obtain the Flashcarts and do a history lesson on modding. I managed to obtain a complete Gateway cart and I use it for my red o3DS that I bought sealed last year.
@@NeanderMeander Literally got it for $300 right as they were going up to the thousands. Legit got lucky. Even filmed an unboxing that I have yet to edit and upload to a public channel. I feel you on doing Justice though, there’s so many things I’ve written but I don’t have the inspiration or time to research a lot of it so anything I do have is either filmed with no editing or stays in the script draft limbo.
@@pr9334 I have a ton of partially written scripts because I just don’t have enough information to to write a full script. Making videos is a ton of work that I don’t think people realize.
First can I just say how amazing the quality of your video is. The production level is simply amazing. Well done. For the rest I appreciated your description of the 3DS, and I agree with you. I do wish the screen didn't wobble on the new version though. Also I like the older version's feel, the removable shell of the XL models makes them feel a bit strange, not as solid.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm glad you feel the same on the different models. That original version might be my favorite out of all the 3DS designs.
If the TN screen is properly calibrated, it's VERY hard to tell the difference. One core issue with the 3DS through the New 3DS XL, is inconsistent calibration. They're fixed out of shop, and it's all over the place. I was lucky with my first New 3DS XL. I thought my upper screen might be IPS, but it does wash out with certain colour types (like black + white in small bars shows up noticeably, but blues, reds, and even greens don't fade so quickly, and the viewing angles are incredible for a TN screen...you can see almost everything on screen at a 40 degree angle). Though the 3D mode, for the games that use it, is cleaner on an IPS. There are less jagged elements and stuttering. However I would point out with the Galaxy edition, and one thing I rather like? The paint job on the inside looks different depending on the light source. Natural vs artificial. House lights, even white lights, give it almost an indigo color. However, in the sun, it becomes royal blue with gold shiny flecks throughout, that just glitter as I move around. Shame the TN screens don't handle sunlight very well, but it is really nifty to see.
I can see the difference between the screens, the ips screen looks more yellow than the tn screen. Tbh, I dont really care about the screen type because im not going to be looking at it from an angle.
Yeah, it really isn't that important to go searching out IPS displays. The differences are so small when you look at them directly. Which is the position all of us play our 3DS's in.
A tech comparison video that focuses on experiences instead of specs. I never thought I’d live to see the day. Thank you for this. More people should consider that devices are not just their specs when making their review videos.
Tech videos focused on specs are really important, but I thought I make my video with a personal spin instead of just a list of facts. I'm glad you noticed. Thank you so much for watching
after watching this, I had to check my 3ds. My n3dsxl is top ips and bottom tn. It is super sentimental and I love it. I have a skin and have modded it with usbc charging and a capture card and it is my #01 console if I want something to play
My N3DSXL has an IPS top screen and a TN bottom screen. I wasn't hunting for IPS, I just bought a random system and got lucky. Although IPS screens don't change too much from TN, I much prefer IPS. I upgraded from an original XL with TN screens, to my current system, and I can see the difference.
Thank you so much for watching this video! Also, thanks for leaving this awesome comment. I'm glad you liked my writing. I sometimes think I spend too much time writing my scripts.
Thanks for making this video! In the market for a 3DS and didn't even know they were made with IPS. Now I know what to look out for. Also your production value is really good!
You get to see your 100 pixels with slightly better colour depth. I have like 3 with tn screens, and they look amazing. I have like 2 thousand hours on my ds and i love my little thingy. Mine is all scratched up and looks like its been dragged across pavement, but the inside is mint and the plastic just looks amazing.
I’m with you! TN screens look amazing. I don’t know what all the fuss is about between the two. I’ve always scratched my head wondering if I’m not seeing what others are.
I have one of the half-breed systems, top screen IPS and the bottom is a TN screen. Probably the 'best' arrangement if I didn't have a dual IPS unit so that Virtual console games can be played in slightly better quality
One year later, and Luma3DS has an update that fixes the factory color curves Nintendo used to match the IPS panels with the TN ones. Apparently, there was a HUGE difference in color accuracy... Not that it matters because you're still playing the same low-fidelity games.
The thing I love about your videos most, is that they have such an incredible way to invoke my own memories of the 3DS. I'm always guaranteed to get those warm fuzzy feelings about the console. And I always think to myself, "Have I been giving the console enough lately?" Which I know I am, but still my answer is always no and I feel like I have to play it at that moment. It might be a bit weird to say or feel but I'm truly grateful for your videos. I feel like I'm watching my brother in arms talk about the console. Your videos always drive to keep investing in the console. I want to make sure that I will always be able to play these games no matter. Whether its TN or IPS I just want to play. Another great video my dude! 🫡
This was an amazing read tonight! Thank you so much for writing it. When I started making these videos I wanted this very thing to happen. I wanted people to want to play more video games and enjoy them the way I do. I also wanted them to think about the consoles they are playing on. I really love gaming hardware and I want more people to look at them and appreciate what amazing things we have access to. Thank you again for watching and leaving this comment. It was awesome to read!
Just keep on top of new listings. If I'm looking for one, I'll look at what's available locally, then move on from there. I try to avoid eBay because most listing there seem to be more expensive than other places. I also try to throw out offers to people who accept them. I also always try to get additional photos. I like to see every angle before I throw down a bunch of money. I hope this helps.
I know, me too. Most people can't tell them apart. I think this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion. Just get one that you can afford and enjoy it. The differences are very minor.
Really nice video. Your cinematography is on point. I was contemplating buying a new 3ds xl, one choice was a lime green that I really liked, and another was a blue with cosmetic damage but it had ips. I decided to go with the lime green in part due to this video.
As far as I remember the IPS N3DS Models were a bit heavier (like 1-4 grams). I've read that there were people with scales specifically looking for those models. I myself am using a dual IPS N3DS (aquired it with pure luck) and I have a dual TN as a Backup (in case my daily driver somehow fails) and honestly, it's great to have those popping colours but regarding gameplay it doesnt really matter as you stated. I also like the look of the N3DS Models over the N3DSXL ones because of this "sterility", as their buttons are at least coloured in the SNES button colours
I didn't know that people were weighing them! Wow! That's a whole new level. I would have included that in this video had I known. I also like the New 3DS. I think the size is fantastic!
Great video. I got an original 3ds from Japan for $36 a couple of months ago and it's in excellent condition. But since then I've thought about buying a new 3ds XL. I might still buy one, but the Original 3ds is still great, and like you said, it's the games and the memories that matter.
The original 3DS is one of my favorites. I has a look and feel that is unlike any other handheld Nintendo has ever made. It's a very premium looking and feeling device.
Thank you so much for watching the video and leaving this amazing comment! That is the Fire Emblem Fates Special Edition New 3DS XL. It's my all time favorite version of the 3DS. I use quite a few things to make these videos. My camera is the Sony FX30. It's been amazing to shoot videos with. I use a soft box light on one side and colored LED bulbs on the opposite side to give each shot a little more dimension. I usually shoot on a sheet of glass to make reflections. I just really like that look. I also cycle through about 5 or 6 lenses depending on what shots I need. Most are prime lenses. Do you have any other specific questions about what I use or my process?
The main takeaway that is said several times in the video is that many people can't tell the difference. So anyone wondering if they have an IPS or not or wanting to get one but they're just too expensive, just assume that yours already has it.
Recently bought a 3DS XL New Galaxy Edition 3DS in good condition for $170, turned out it had dual IPS displays! Never knew it was a thing but immediately noticed something was different from my black new 3DS XL I was replacing. Brightness for one seemed different and more cool white forsure. Did research and found out about IPS displays. Great video!
I bought a N2DS XL a month before the eShop closed, I thought the TN screens would bother me but you're right, you don't even really notice after a while unless they're side by side, still looking for those IPS models tho. With how sought after these screens are atm, I'm hoping one day we get 3rd party made ones made for the 3DS models, so we don't have to pay and arm and leg for them
@@NeanderMeander of course, we are sharing the same adiction to Zelda....the only reason i got a OLED Switch, cause up to this date i was totaly happy playing on my switch lite....but after seeing the totk Switch in store and in person, i can't stop my self from bying....and now i'm so happy, cause it looks awesome and the OLED display is making Handheld gaming so much better....sorry for my horrible english, but it is a foreign language after all....but long story short, i'd love to see your take on this
Thanks to this video I found out my n3dsll is dual IPS, I bought it for $130 used. The listing didn't say anything about screen, just that it was in pristine condition...
To be fair, I bought most of these brand new when they were in stores. I only have two that were used and I bought them before they were hard to get. I had no idea they would be worth so much. People were almost giving them away before 2020. I loved the 3DS before it blew up. I looked crazy buying so many of them back when they were still being supported.
just got my first 3DS, a black new 3DS from japan, managed to get it for about 150$ after shipping and tax which I believe is a fairly decent price for how much these are selling for nowdays.
You feel the love for the consoles itself and videogames in general in your videos. I feel the same when i play my PS Vita oled 100% original. It's my third one owned since day one, with a big pause of 10 years. I decided to find the best i could after 2 bad ones in 2023 and get one from an amazing price from a collector. So console barely used, like a time machine from release date in 2012 and i could get all my saves and games bought in the ps store even from the psp GO era in 2009. With the store still working , its amazing to have still the OG experience and everything work for 15 years. I wish for Nitendo 3DS players the store would have still up as well like the PS store. I don't want to hack it and i'm happy to go to videogame shop and buy physical ps vita game from time to time. It's just the overall pleasure. Nowadays for Christmas 2024 . I get repaired my little brother original 3DS that he gets day one to repair both L and R , joystick bonet and new battery to get my little brother happy again. Also to finally play the dream game i wanted to play : Luigi's Mansion 2. I love the uniqueness of that console and love playing in 3D. In Fact i still own a Plasma 3D TV and love to watch 3D movie and play 3D games with the PS3 as well. Hail 3D and passionate gaming owners and experience !
Just bought a used good condition N3DS (not XL) for $200 (ridiculous price) after looking for one for a while now. I was actually looking for a XL version but as you said, as i started looking at pictures of then i got bored, theyre so plain looking, it actually made me less excited by the idea of buying them, but then i saw the regular N3DS , interchangable face plates and colored buttons, i loved it and was lucky enough to find a unicorn (one with dual IPS screens). Been pretty happy with it.
I've known about the two different screen types for a long time, but never knew the actual differences between them. Looks like mine is probably both tn, not that I really care as long as it plays games
In my opinion, it really doesn't matter which type you have. The games looks almost identical on both screens. I think you have the right mindset when it come to playing 3DS games.
Oooh, I just checked mine, and I've got 2 of the IPS displays, with only my New 3DS (non-XL) being a TN display. I thought it was just the fact that my N3DS was getting old, while my N3DS XL and N2DS XL screens were just bigger, and newer; but now it makes a lot of sense!
I've had two 3DS consoles. My first was the original XL and my second was a New XL. I'm not sure what the original was for panels, but it was the basic blue one. My new one is the galaxy design with top and bottom TN panels. I got the galaxy one because of how fun it looked in comparison, and I swear the 3D is way better on the newer model.
I’ve got the fire emblems special edition too! it released just as I was planning to buy a 3ds, so I got it without much thought. Had no idea it was apparently so sought after tbh, I just liked the design. I saw people online throwing around the terms ips/ tn, so I clicked on the video in curiosity. Made me realise my emblem ds has an upper ips and a lower tn. This doesn’t change my love of this console too much, but it is kinda neat to realise my favourite hand held is also kinda like a shiny Pokémon.
I alwys thought i had a topIPS screen and a bottom TN screen. Turns out i had both IPS screens. I saw this in the Rosalina menu, under screen filters menu, to enhance the screen colors
Honestly it's pretty hard to tell the difference. This is nothing like back in the day when there was a HUGE difference between the screens on the AGS-001 GBA SP & the superior, backlit screen on the AGS-101 GBA SP or heck even the huge difference between the inferior AGS-001's front-lit display vs every previous device in the Gameboy lineup which had no lights at all (Gameboy Light's glowing screen excluded of course). Viewing angles mean very little on a handheld & slight improvements to the color quality also don't amount to much. You're still gaming on a couple of small, relatively low resolution screens. A mid-tier modern cell phone probably has a considerably better screen. If it's Android it can probably emulate a 3DS pretty smoothly (minus the 3D, the now-definct online service & Street Pass).
Can you make a video about the PSVita and your opinions about the console. I have a new 3ds xl galaxy and PSVita1000 both are super great console and easy to mod.
I can definitely make a video about the Vita. I don't have as much experience with it as I do the 3DS handhelds, but I'll give it a go. I might not be able to get to it for a while though. I have a pretty packed schedule for the next few months.
I honestly had no idea what screen I had? I have the Galaxy one and we also have the red one that you had on screen inbox. I just got really really lucky and somebody posted it on marketplace and I picked it up for a great deal. The Galaxy one I got at our local pawn shop also for a great deal inbox but it's not complete. I remember when we bought the 2DS for Scott the black and teal one. We got it on sale at Walmart for clearance price. Never knowing that it was going to be so hyped. Honestly love any of my DS consoles. Be it DS lite, DSI 2DS or 3DS. They're just great handhelds. Love the story of your dad. I absolutely adore when I hear that parent's support the hobby because if you're doing everything else you're supposed to be doing, you're paying your bills. You're working. You're taking care of your family. Who cares how you spend your free time. My parents are the exact same way they support me in all my gaming ventures.
Wow, you've been able to find 3DS consoles in the box out in the wild!? That's amazing! If that ever happens I'll be all over it. Yeah, my parents have always been very supportive of whatever my interests were. Even as an adult they've been exceptionally great about everything. That's great yours are the same way! I'm glad you guys are back making videos! It just wasn't the same without uploads from you. How was SEGE?
Pro tip of buying a top IPS screen for your 3ds cause realistically why do you need a bottom IPS I can’t even find bottom IPS panels on amazon. (I imagine there might be a special website that’s got some stock)
Bottom ips is more important for me because the viewing angles does more matter if your playing on a table like me on a bottom TN it would be washed out and thanks to hombrew the colours are also on TN panels good so I think bottom is more important for me
That’s because it really isn’t that big of a deal. It’s barely noticeable. That’s why I too make this video to show that the whole debate doesn’t really matter. Just enjoy the games with whatever you have.
I wound up with both the dual IPS and the dual TN. I got one online through GameStop while the website was displaying none available by changing the address in my search bar to a color that wasn’t listed on their site and they said in stock. The second I got through a trade of 3 broken original model 3Ds I got for $20 each. I think TN is better when it comes to the retro games since the IPS make everything a little darker.
I didn’t know this and went to test it immediately. Turns out I have an IPS top screen. While it’s kind of cool, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have noticed anything if it was TN.
Came for IPS screen information, stayed for the insights on sentimentality.
Thanks for watching!
My TN panels are noticeably more green than my other 3ds screen
I'll have to look into this. I think the TN screens already look nice but I'm willing to see how they look after some adjustments. Thanks for the tip!
Though in the end it’s not like having one screen or the other is detrimental to the playing experience.
yo found this comment. didnt know theres such a setting, as I thought my panels on 2dsxl were too "warm"
@@jaderraider9055can you share your screen settings? Ive been tweaking my new 3dsxl w/ tn panel also
@@chrislordponce6058 On my 2ds XL, my screen temp is 6500k and my gamma is set at 1.27.
It took us a while to realise it, but damn the 3DS is a brilliant little thing. I have so much love for it now.
It really did take a while for for us all to see how great it is. I also love it!
Speak for yourself. This thing was always awesome it has Pokémon and monster hunter
I have bought today a New 3DS XL with both IPS screens for 125€ the price was low becouse the exterior metallic
shell was worn out.
I got really lucky and got a new 3ds xl with top and botton ips for like 80€ in 2018.
I'm already over it. With how unusually expensive they've become, I'm lucky to have it at all.
I wouldn't worry about it. I like the look of both. They are so close to having the same look, I think the whole thing is overblown.
I love how absolutely calming this video is somehow
Thank you for watching it
@@NeanderMeander My pleasure
Couldn't agree more with you on the standard N3DSXL interior being sterile. I recently swapped out the cstick, circle pad, and outer shells with white alternatives on my black N3DSXL. Along with replacing my ABXY buttons with the coloured ones like on the N3DS and I'm loving the look.
That sounds awesome! I would love to see a picture of it. Those standard models are so boring on the inside. I like white consoles though, so that’s probably why I primarily use my Fire Emblem New 3DS XL
that's what I tried to do with mine but I ended up breaking something during re-assembly:(
@@johndou423 That sucks, sorry to hear it. The N3DSXL can be kind of a nightmare with so many ribbon cables, especially all the ones that come through the hinge.
@@NeanderMeander Oh for sure, I love the white and black look.
button and stick mods are gonna be up for me when I get my white n3dsxl.
Thank you so much! I try my best to put together a compelling video. I'm glad you liked it
If people really want IPS screens so much, then why don't they just mod it? It seems way easier to gamble on $20 screens than pay the price of a Nintendo Switch OLED just to get IPS screens.
yeah tbh I don't get it
I'm more surprised no one has offered to make 3rd party IPS screens as replacements, they're in fairly high demand so I would assume there's money to be made, many one day it'll happen
From what I hear, the New 3DS XL is a bitch to get into and put back together without damaging it, so it probably isn't worth it if you don't let yourself get obsessed with IPS mania
it's not a simple mod for the newer 3ds models. it's incredibly easy to break
Dude…. I don’t know how you do it…
These videos are some of the most satisfying videos out there.
Thank you so much for watching and saying such nice things! I was really good to read this.
I loved the part about being sentimental about these things one of my biggest regrest is trading in my dsi xl and 3ds xl into gamestop for all of like 30 dollars each when those consoles meant so much to me im glad im in a place now where i just recently purchased both of those consoles again same color and everything but it hard not to miss my original consoles from when i was a kid, great video man
There is a huge flaw for me with the TN screen: "Ghosting"
I recently got my hands on a sealed New 3ds XL on eBay and i had the amazing suprise getting a dual ips unit!
0:36 Is it me or does the TN screen have better color saturation and if so are they more accurate?
Well it looks like...And I'm here searching for a IPS screen one, but maybe I will be happy with the TN.
Loved the part reminiscing about getting your fav 3ds, I like how the more i travel with it, it becomes more personal with all the memories of playing the games in different locations,
I'm glad you liked that part. They really do become more personal when you travel around with them. I'm always think about where I was when I play mine.

man the 3DS is such a sick console. I definitely don't think it got the love it deserved when it was still supported but it's easy to tell that people are looking back at the console very fondly these days.
I think you're right. People are really seeing how great it is. It's cool to see how much love it's been getting.
That's awesome! I think if you can find them for a good deal, definitely get it. They do look really good
how much was normal price for you?
same. for $211 after shipping and the listing said top ips only. i love it cuz the black interior and the lime green. perfect for weed stickers lol
Little update on my 2ds journey in 2023:
Finished almost every game on the 3ds family of consoles I wanted to play.

That's really cool! That's great you got it before prices went insane.
I had to pause the video and grab my New 3DSXL to check. I have an IPS top and TN bottom. I bought it at launch
That's awesome! Sounds like you got a good one
yeah I definitely prefer the quality over the original 3DS
@@lucykaede5863 I've never had a problem with my systems yellowing. Even my Super Nintendo never yellowed over time. Maybe it has to do with living in a really dry climate. Though I travel to humid locations often for work. I keep them in cases, maybe that helps.

Crazy how much they are now.
You got a sealed original 3DS!? Wow, that's awesome! I've thought about doing a modding video. I just don't know too much about it to do it justice.
Now if I can find one at a fair price is a whole other question.
That's the problem right now. It's still hard for me to believe that they are going for so much!
Hi, my fellow brother
Awesome video bro
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it
after watching this, I had to check my 3ds. My n3dsxl is top ips and bottom tn. It is super sentimental and I love it. I have a skin and have modded it with usbc charging and a capture card and it is my #01 console if I want something to play
That's really cool! Sounds like you got a good one
That's really cool! I got mine on accident too. It wasn't until I checked that I found out I had two of them
reading the captions and I cant help but think "this sounds like poetry". Nice vid dude.
I'm glad I could help! If you end up getting one, let me know. Thank you for watching
It's amazing how much effort you put into a video about 3ds screens
Thanks! Maybe I put in too much work.
I have one of the half-breed systems, top screen IPS and the bottom is a TN screen. Probably the 'best' arrangement if I didn't have a dual IPS unit so that Virtual console games can be played in slightly better quality
I have a new 3DS with top IPS screen and a bottom TN screen, but I hardly can notice the difference.
I have a hard time telling the difference too. That cool you have one with both.
Woah that helped a lot, thanks man!!! awesome video and editing btw
Thank you! I'm glad it helped you out
One year later, and Luma3DS has an update that fixes the factory color curves Nintendo used to match the IPS panels with the TN ones.
Apparently, there was a HUGE difference in color accuracy... Not that it matters because you're still playing the same low-fidelity games.
I feel like this video is about so much more than Nintendo ds screens 🥲
I'm glad you caught onto that.
Do you have any tips on getting a 3ds in 2024
Just keep on top of new listings.
I have such a hard time telling the difference between between IPS & TN.
Awesome! How are you liking the lime green New 3DS XL?
This is great video and prespective, I've just acquire my own first New 3DS XL and luckily someone sold with top IPS, really loving this console
That’s awesome! Sounds like you got a good one. What games are you playing on it?
Yeah that’s the exact same thing I did back then when I picked up my n3DSxl lol
I know for a fact that my Hyrule Edition New 3DS XL has an upper IPS screen, but I'm still undecided if the bottom is TN or IPS.
I know, right!? It's tough to tell sometimes. I had a hard time seeing it when I was buying them up.
This video is incredibly well put together bro you just earned a sub 🤝
Thanks for the sub! I’m glad you liked it!
I love your videos
The way you do the footage
Love the shot at 7:26
What 3DS is that one?! And what recording equipment you use?!
This is the exact point I wanted to make in this video. The difference is so marginal, I'm surprised it's talked about so much.
My bottom one washes out way more than my top screen. Does that mean I have an IPS on top? The top one still washes out a tiny bit.
Probably. Though I wouldn't put too much thought into it. Just enjoy playing the games.
Great video, nice format and narrative, very professional.. You have 1 more humble subscriber!
Thank you so much for subbing. I hope I can make more videos you like.
That's awesome! What a find!
I bought a N2DS XL a month before the eShop closed, I thought the TN screens would bother me but you're right, you don't even really notice after a while unless they're side by side, still looking for those IPS models tho.
With how sought after these screens are atm, I'm hoping one day we get 3rd party made ones made for the 3DS models, so we don't have to pay and arm and leg for them
That's awesome! I really like the New 2DS XL. I would imagine someone will start making replacement screens.
My couple recently gifted me their new 3ds xl because they dont use it anymore, and to my surprise, it has both top and bottom ips screens!
The production quality on this is 1000%
Yours are the only videos that exude the love I feel for the 3DS!
Thanks for this comment and watching my videos. I love the 3DS! It's been a good companion since 2012

Awesome! Sounds like you got a good one!
Love seeing someone just hoard 3DS consoles. Its already so hard to get one for a reasonable price STILL.
Wow! That's a really good deal.
There you go! That's really cool!
That's awesome that you got one not knowing it was so sought after. I really like the design as well! It's the one I use the most.
WOW! Congratulations on the 10.9k Followers! Let's go!

Thank you so much! These take a while to put together, so I really appreciate reading comments like this
I alwys thought i had a topIPS screen and a bottom TN screen. Turns out i had both IPS screens. I saw this in the Rosalina menu, under screen filters menu, to enhance the screen colors
Nice! Looks like you got a good one
Great vid, great opinions and views, and good flow to it. 👍🏼👍🏼
Much appreciated! I'm glad you liked it.

Pro tip of buying a top IPS screen for your 3ds cause realistically why do you need a bottom IPS I can’t even find bottom IPS panels on amazon. (I imagine there might be a special website that’s got some stock)
Bottom ips is more important for me because the viewing angles does more matter if your playing on a table like me on a bottom TN it would be washed out and thanks to hombrew the colours are also on TN panels good so I think bottom is more important for me
@@LeonGehtyou play your 3ds flat on the table???
@@CPTClank1 The lower screen is flat on the table, the upper one is not. The top tn panel isn’t washed out but the bottom would be if it’s tn
@@LeonGehtwhatever games you play on that terrify me then. Or they would make me fall asleep one or the other
@@CPTClank1 Yes probably they would like Tomodachi live and animal crossing new leaf 😂
I own like 4 different 3DS models and I never once thought of what screen type amy of them are
That’s because it really isn’t that big of a deal.
That's awesome! Sounds like you got a good find. I think you're right about using TN screens with retro games.
I didn’t know this and went to test it immediately. Turns out I have an IPS top screen. While it’s kind of cool, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have noticed anything if it was TN.
That’s cool you have a top IPS screen. I have a hats time seeing a difference. I think most people can’t really tell them apart.
You can't have 2 "question and then silence" segments in the first 2 minutes bruh
I wrote two intros thinking I would pick one over the other. I liked both, so I used both.
