All auto manufacturers should allow their engineers to design a car, then build one (1) and force the engineers to do the standard periodic maintenance themselves. After that I think we will all see much better and simpler designed cars to work on.
If the crank and cam shafts are locked into the exact right position with those pins and the position of the sprockets don't matter at all as long as they are fastened back on then that's an awesome design. No sprocket "hope to get them into the correct position" crap! Also, if they designed those pins to be in the way while putting things back together so it is impossible to forget them in there then that's a bonus.
Most are made in the UK (in Oxford), but also made in other places (my sister had a Cooper S which was made in the Netherlands). BMW bought Rover group, and between them developed the original "new" Mini, and when BMW sold Rover again they kept the Mini and the Oxford plant. So new ones are BMWs
The new mini cooper is a BMW designed and made car. Yes metric is so much easier to understand than SAE, and most new cars are metric even the domestic.
The Germans had to work with the French to design this French/German engine. The waterpump-drive uses some kind of variable friction wheel, isn't constantly driven. When this waterpump drive fails it sounds just like "your" Peugeot, Citroen, BMW engine :)
Welcome to another episode of "The Bickerson's", where our trusty mechanics will argue with each other for our entertainment, lol....good video guys!!!
The good thing about a mini Cooper and the Service position. It only adds like a day having to take the front of the car off and put it back on and you have to do it so often that you can cut that time in half in no time. 😊
Nice job boys, you did it. I understand it can be frustrating but it could have been worse..... some German cars need the engine and/or transmission out of the car for that kind of job. But usually with what I own, you don't need to drain anything for the service position....
I get that there's some 'playing' to the camera... and plenty of 'mechanic sass' afoot. But do the customers ever watch the videos and go....."yiiiiiiikes!!!" ?? hahahaha
was gonna buy a new mini then found out the clutch had to be replaced every 150ish? km and it cost a lot to replace so bought an 07 Honda Fit. Used to have an MGB re and re engine and gearbox to put in a cluch was around 6 hours working on the drive way and I thought that was bad.
I have a 2012 countryman s all4 I replaced the timing chain as well as the valve stem seals.. this took a week to finish, it’s a tough job if you’re by yourself but it’s possible! It took me a bit because I dropped a keeper inside the engine and i ended up removing the oil pan and the head to double check. Found it in the oil pan unable to fish out with a magnet
Service mode doesn’t require a/c evaluation or coolant drain. Front end just pulls forward about 5 inches. Can be pulled outa little farther with supports.
All mini Cooper engines are made by BMW the actually had a recall on the timing chain tensioner years ago because the engines where blowing up I worked on tons of these and the tensioners are very very specific to each year of mini.the tensioner is on the backside of the engine on the outside. (At least the ones I worked on did) 1 or 2 bolts and it comes right out
Tax times are set incorrectly! Chain pretension is done with a special tool. The timing is also tightened using the slide rail at the top. You forgot the slide rail. The video is completely pointless and wrong
I just got a Mini, R50, cam chain tensioner can be got at from the back of the engine with a breaker bar and a wobble 19mm extension, about 30 minutes including coffee. I was actually looking for r50 videos but youtube took me here as I follow your channel and Sarah too, you are potty mouth, Fred, no worries, Sarah bleeps all her swears out, gues you can have kids watching then, maybe more views, crazy shit service position, WTAF? Liked and subsribed
Maybe you guys should have watched a couple of UA-cam videos or even checked some forums before taking on this job. You can do the entire timing chain from the top and passenger side wheel well. No need to put it in "service position".
Never tell your mechanic, but the problem is A good mechanic should ask what you think the problem is Always Because humans are usually intuitively right with their gut feeling even a soccer mom that doesn’t know how to check the oil But don’t take a bunch of parts to your mechanic and just tell them to change them I’m not even at the end and I can probably tell you I’m 50% sure how this is gonna end 😆
I can't be the only one that thinks the guy in the glasses looks like Rainman Ray, also a mechanic... same facial hair, glasses.... everything. Ray is a little older though.
That’s not service position. Service position slides the front end forward close to 6 inches so you don’t have to drain a/c or coolant. Also this is the prince engine series, co developed with Renault, the early engines were trash in the R56 chassis
I disagree When you need to remove the front of the car, as well as the radiator, BEFORE you can even begin to do the job that really needs to be done, THAT'S enough to make me pass. Different story if you already own it. But I'm NOT buying that headache
@@philherrick7319 I got an 09 for a great price, dreading having to do this. BUT! FCP Euro did do a video showing how to do this without putting into service mode.
Just to save you 4 hours of labor next time, you can just use a wiggle bit and a long extension to take that out. No need to disassemble everything and replace the chain etc unless this is meant to be a funny gag video... That tensioner is so common that it may as well be a maintenance item.
Great video chaps! You've just confirmed what's wrong with my daughters Cooper S
All auto manufacturers should allow their engineers to design a car, then build one (1) and force the engineers to do the standard periodic maintenance themselves. After that I think we will all see much better and simpler designed cars to work on.
Alloe?
Try "require" or, "force"
Fearless repair job.
An ample amount of Sarah, comedy and F bombs....I love you guys!!!

I see it as a way to require one off tools and make it unappealing for the DIY’er so they take it to the dealer.

The first letter of the VIN tells you where it was built. This one was W which is Germany.
The new mini cooper is a BMW designed and made car. Yes metric is so much easier to understand than SAE, and most new cars are metric even the domestic.
I have thought about getting a Mini...and then I see things like this.
Domt get a mini
I don’t know why some companies hate their service technicians so much. Because most mechanics won’t touch something like that.
This was a really fun and entertaining video! Minis are really cool cars but servicing them is always a unique learning experience 🤪

Ho lee crap on that equinox, go drive that to the aircraft boneyard and park it 😂
Welcome to another episode of "The Bickerson's", where our trusty mechanics will argue with each other for our entertainment, lol....good video guys!!!
Whether the camera is rolling or not that's just the way they talk to each other 😂
Nice work guys
That one was assembled in Oxford England. I just did this job in my driveway without the service position. Good video, thank you
The pillow talk to each other is always gold. And reading is for nerds! 😂

Always nice to see Sarah stop by for a visit.
No fair, you used time lapse, I wanted to experience the agony of reassembly in real time. 😂
Equinox - dissemble Johnny 5 - SAE/Metric: what ever fits without looking

Metric is almost always better but I'm in reno and there is no nice simple metric for 8' ceilings or proximity, or it's fractions (like 2 or 4').
I love German cars. Maintenance on them sucks!
But apparently Chevy takes the cake. At least the parts are cheaper, maybe…
Well done guys!

We’ve had some apologize haha
@@brandonwelsh2743 That's hilarious!!
3:37........that looked like a murder scene inside the Equinox.
Sarah wrench score on the Mini ??
Or someone had a drug dog signal that there was some goodies behind the dash.
The equinox disassembled is terrifying; truly nightmare fuel.

Thank you very much for the video! Can you please write down all the torque specifications. I also have an N18 and couldn't find it. THX

Not the first gen. Those are Brazilian engines.
This one is a 27mm socket for the tensioner.
You guys are funny. So how much was the final invoice? I want to buy a similar car and I would be changing the time chain on it. Thanks.
Tax times are set incorrectly! Chain pretension is done with a special tool. The timing is also tightened using the slide rail at the top. You forgot the slide rail. The video is completely pointless and wrong
Hey guys, hows the panel adhesived flare holding up? any issues? its been a year just checking in for an update
Try replacing the knock sensor, another nightmare job!
What holds the crankshaft in place
What a great entertaining bruh banter.... and great work on that German Lego engine. How much is this job supposed to take and cost?
Do you have to set adaptations with a special tool?
Yes scan tool
