For me, JC Superstar is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, both the score and the lyrics. A hundred years from now, when the classics are talked about, this will be included.
It needs a re write. JCS is the best, but if it got the level of attention that the Phantom got for two decades it would evolve into something amazing. Could have extra songs added as well, there are other aspects of the religious story to tell

It takes talent and guts to do musical theater. It is so easy to bomb. Really high risk projects; you need lots of expensive talent, and you earn it night by night. All the creators are heroes IMHO. So much easier to make a movie where you can tweak it in post production ad nauseum.

I would love to see disney do a renaissance of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals and it should all be done in traditional Disney hand drawn animation. What do you think?
I think that would be like a great 90s style Melody Time! In fact I dream up movie versions of Andrew Lloyd Webbers musicals that should have been made. For instance: 1 Starlight Express (in 1989) at Disney - produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Jim Henson 2 Cats, the Animated Movie in (1994) at Universal - Produced by Steven Spielberg and created by the Amblimation Team 3 Sunset Boulevard (in 2001) at Paramount - directed by John Landis and starring Glenn Close Which movie version would you like to see if they were made?

I certainly agree with all the wonderful and accurate comments I read above. The Disney idea is a great idea. I have seen quite a few of his plays but missed Phantom and also Jesus Christ SS which I regret. My eyes certainly have been opened. I always sat and enjoyed the play without a thought of all the effort that preceded such a fabulous creation.I felt a special admiration for this wonderful man when he sat and entertained us each day during isolation. He was so calm and unassuming. Now that he is back in the theatre working I view him as the lightning that comes after the quiet before the storm.A true genious that deliver what people crave and don't even realize until they hear and see it.💖
Of course the album J C was more popular in the US, I remember how popular the Godspell' LP was around the same time. JC is a very different point of view.
If I understand the video, ALW says that By Jeeves failed because it did not "hang together" as it was a collection of short stories rather than a story, but in a way Cats was the same - a collection of poems. So I wonder why Cats was successful but By Jeeves was not.
I think if you rewatch you will see he was not specifying Jeeves itself by that remark. He did feel that Jeeves failure was caused by the book and staging. But his original score is a gem.
I thought I was having a Nelson Mandela Effect Experience until I found this documentary; I couldn't find it anywhere. I first saw it in 1989 on the Bravo Channel, when The Phantom of the Opera was famous onstage with Michael Crawford. The song that stuck out in my mind the most, though was, Any Dream Will Do, sung by the children.
So Father Number 2 of Little Joe: The Moonlight Cat is 39 Years Older than The Youngest Jellicle, Wow and that's what he Looked like Back then AWESOME.

ALW and the interviewer both address the assumption that the British couldn't "do" musicals, but...wasn't Lionel Bart a big deal on the West End? Didn't he prove that the British could produce musicals too?
Yes, but Lionel had Oliver! and his others were not similar hits. Sandy Wilson had a hit with The Boyfriend but the history of British musicals is heavy with flops. And the Brits did not have triple-threat performers at that time.

Israel in 4 BC, had No Mass Communication!!!! my favorite line in the rock opera...The electric guitars were so advanced so far-reaching into my very soul...that I probably the first 12-year-old girl in my Catholic grade school to forgive Judas and have a heart for him!!! the words and music could change my whole perception of the betrayal of Jesus and looking at Jesus and Judas in parallel perception...Thank you Sir Andrew Llyod Webber and Tim Rice!
So they show many women singing I don't know how to love him.
But not the woman who made it her own and sang it in the movie and on stage originally.
Yvonne Elliman.
The narrator/interviewer is Melvin Bragg, who wrote the script to the movie of Jesus Christ Superstar.

I LOVE EVERY THING ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER HAS EVER BROUGHT TO US IN HIS MUSICALS ....
except cats.
If I were to star as the phantom in the phantom of the opera and love never dies and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s other musicals it would be an honour
Already watched this on YT a few years ago. 😴
Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music/vocal score for his then-wife, Sarah Brightman's vocal range.
We saw the Phantom (and Cats) at the 5th Avenue in dt Seattle with Sarah and Michael Crawford.
They spent $11M to update the 5th Avenue for the Chandelier scene, etc.
Both were amazing. Still have the Book and CD/Soundtracks, including the Making of from each.
Yes, you watched it here a few years ago as this is the only version up there all these years.
He is seriously a genius
It takes talent and guts to do musical theater. It is so easy to bomb. Really high risk projects; you need lots of expensive talent, and you earn it night by night. All the creators are heroes IMHO. So much easier to make a movie where you can tweak it in post production ad nauseum.
Edward De Jong And many disliked his musicals because of the continuous singing without dialogue...I think he’s a musical genius!
Edward De Jong And many disliked his musicals because of the continuous singing without dialogue...I think he’s a musical genius!
I used to have a copy of this on Betamax and only recently started thinking about this again. I was SO obsessed with this. Thank you so much for uploading this!
I taped it on VHS and watched it endlessly in the 1980s. Thank God I kept the tape.
Omg haha my folks and I used to have a Betamax when we lived in the Philippines.
Nice to see Marvin Hamlisch at the piano on Memory.
What a voice the phantom lady has! Wonderful!
Sarah Brightman
Universal should make a movie about the life story of Andrew Lloyd Webber starring Mike Myers as Andrew Lloyd Webber!
This made me LOL but I bet he’d nail it
good idea
or they could just get Mike Myers to make another Shrek film.
JC Super Star is my favourite one, musically, lyrically, melodically everything. Its astounding.
I took my parents to see Joseph off Broadway, in the 1970’s. My mother, a Bible scholar, loved it.
Marti Webb really did the best Tell Me On A Sunday.
It's never been bettered. Written for her. She had that brittle persona that worked perfectly.
@@DamienSlattery68 She just kills it. I don't think anyone could do better, but who knows.
Agree
This is actually an episode of the UK show The Southbank Show (an arts show presented by Melvyn Bragg, season 10 episode 7) from the 15th November 1986 titled "The Andrew Lloyd Webber Story"
It is but I could not title that as it would have probably affected the presence of it on UA-cam.
Yeah, of course, I just added it as additional info in case anyone was interested :)
I would have to agree that Jesus Christ Super Star is incredible not only musically but in the way that it tells the story of the last days of Christ’s life, not as an exalted “holier than thou” saint, but as a human being interacting w/ other human beings who
I would love to see disney do a renaissance of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals and it should all be done in traditional Disney hand drawn animation.
What do you think?
I think that would be like a great 90s style Melody Time! In fact I dream up movie versions of Andrew Lloyd Webbers musicals that should have been made. For instance:
1 Starlight Express (in 1989) at Disney - produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Jim Henson
2 Cats, the Animated Movie in (1994) at Universal - Produced by Steven Spielberg and created by the Amblimation Team
3 Sunset Boulevard (in 2001) at Paramount - directed by John Landis and starring Glenn Close
Which movie version would you like to see if they were made?
@@1997calvert Great ideas you have from starlight express to sunset boulevard and I wish that would've happen back in the 90s.
My idea for disney is to release a theactrical big budget hand drawn animated film adaptation of Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with the directors of Aladdin and the little mermaid John Musker and Ron Clements to direct, music by Alan Menken and Andrew Lloyd Webber while time rice doing lyrics of the songs, And here's my choice list of cast who would be perfect to play the roles in the movie
Donny Osmond as Joseph
Jodi Benson as the Narrator
John Goodman as Jacob
Keith David as Potiphar
Jessica Espinoza as Mrs. Potiphar
Brian Hull as pharroh
Samuel E. Wright as Judah
Nathan Lane as the baker
Eric Idle as the butler
Jennifer Hale as Asenath
Other brothers of Joseph should be played by Tom Kenny, Jim Cummings, Rob Paulsen, Nico Roukema, and Brian Hull.
What do u think of that please tell me, and as for The PHANTOM of the OPERA I need some time to think about it but what do you think who should be the right cast and crew for Disney's The PHANTOM of the OPERA?
@@jswatch9270 Amazing your idea of a Disney animated adaptation of Joseph and the Dream Coat! Of course your choice of casting looks a little unusual, but otherwise wonderful! marvellous!
And as for casting a Disney animated adaptation of Phantom of the Opera, well here's my choice pf casting:
Brian Blessed as the Phantom
Rebecca Caine as Christine
Michael J Fox as Raoul
Angela Lansbury as Madame Giry
Kathleen Battle as Carlotta
John Cleese as Firmin
Tim Curry as Andre
Luciano Pavarotti as Piangi (when he was alive)
Tara Strong as Meg Giry
Adrien Edmondson as Buquet
Opera singers should be played by:
April Wincthell
Russi Taylor
Cindi Milo
Jimmy Hibbert
Chris Lang
Rob Pulsem
Maurice Lamarche
Jeff McCartey
Cathy Cavadinl
Joe Alaskey
and Greg Berg
(when they were alive)
What do you think of that? And did you know that there was already a movie adaption of Phantom - but a Warner Bros live action adaptation in 2004?
@@1997calvert I don't know if Michael J. Fox, John Cleese, and Tara Strong can sing opera and I'm not sure if Tim Curry can sing again because I think he's starting to lose his voice but we'll see how it goes with him right now.
@@1997calvert yes I Know that in 2004 warner bros. made a movie adaptation of it and I love it that it is my favorite musical movie of all time.
Such an interesting and entertaining documentary.
Have seen JC Superstar live twice with Ted Nealy and Carl Anderson and love it, but my heart will always be with Cats. I've seen it 3 or 4 times live and a couple times on video. I know most or all of the words to be scores, lol.
Pero que jóvenes eran Sarah y el ...osea que empezó muy joven a Componer y encontró a Sarah no me extraña que se tengan ese cariño tantos años...
Call me a weirdo but Andrew Lloyd Webber looked kind of handsome when he was younger...I’m talking like in the thumbnail. 🗣
We’re both weirdos!! I think he was a cute young guy!!!
Cinnamongirl, heh, heh.
I have to agree. I found a few pictures of him with a cat back in the day and he was positively darling.
Thank you so much for posting this. Really fascinating. :)
Very handsome so wonderful to see this and learn about your background. I don't understand how I missed Phantom. I loved to be in NY then. I was the Investment Mgmt Officer and security trader of a Bank Trust Dep. I came up a couple of times a year to visit exchange and brokers. Would have loved your plays.💖
Loved hearing your mother speak and to hear about your wonderful father.
1:26 just sounds so strange on a piano.
Genious! I did not see this but remember hearing the music frequently.💖
I wish they'd subtitled him when the piano overwhelms his talking because sometimes it's very difficult for me to understand what he says.
Yes, the mix is terrible.
agreed, I have no idea what he was saying!
"Memory" from Cats was ghost-written by Don Black. I was told this by Lionel Bart.
Don wrote a lyric "Good Times" that was one of a few completed lyrics before the final.
Brilliant documentary thanks so much for the upload.

No, he has screwed my favourite fairly tale
Just realized where David Tenant got his inspiration for Barty Crouch Jnr from
And 58:22 was in Starlight Express for a time.
I hear a bit of Sunset Boulevard in this melody
I would die to hear Colm Wilkinson and Sarah Brightman do tpoto. I think I read that Andrew wrote those parts for them specifically. That would be my dream.
He actually said he never wrote anything for a specific person; that was on the show about his 40 years -- sorry can't remember the name but it's on youtube. Surprised me when he said that.
There are some videos of the Sydmonton version here , mostly the audio only
Just 9????!!!! Ok, mind already blown...thank you for this!
yes it worked in Atoms for Piece Radiohead , the doors in the Pheonix cinema create the synth riff , It was also in Oxford but maybe it was a coincidence
One word: Genius
Screw that critic, I heard some Sondheim songs that sound the same , Broadway critics are just jealous of Lloyd Webber because his musicals are more successful
Thank you Andrew and Tim...2 geniuses
I forgot that Stigwood was so tied to the begging.

Loved her version
don't you just have to laugh at the critics who don't really understand starlight express! a horrible show but it is what it is xx its just fun xx
I loved it too but I will note that Andrew and Richard Stilgoe did listen to exactly what Frank Rich had said in this documentary. They went back and re-jigged the lyric of "Freight is Great.." to ridicule the silly lyric.
What you mean Starlight Express was a horrible show but it is fun, That makes no sense what so ever-And contradicts itself

A question for Mr. Slattery (as I didn't know of another way to contact you): I remember seeing on a comment here that you own a video bootleg of Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice's CRICKET (HEARTS AND WICKETS): am I correct? I ask because, if you do, I wonder if there might there be a way that I could obtain a copy? If not, I understand, but I'm looking for anything from an actual performance of the piece (I have the demo recordings of the songs, but most of them don't feature any singing). Thank you for your time!
