Fascinating listening an early alternate version of "The Music of the Night" from Phantom. Sarah always slays... even if the lyrics weren't as good as the definitive version.
I think that Andrew explained it further when he was being interviewed by David Frost. They even showed a rare video of Sarah performing the song with these lyrics accompanied by the orchestral backing track later used for Michael Crawford’s first recording of “The Music of the Night.”

Holy cow the history behind Music of The Night right here! So cool!

The more I learn about Lloyd Webber and his work, I'm astounded! 😁👏👏And Sarah is so adorable! ☺☺
She’s still quite attractive to this day. But that’s just my opinion.
Loni is fantastic! I wish they still sung Evita like this
If Sir Andrew is planning a revival, he might want to know what the audience wants from his work.
I saw Ackerman in Evita in SF. SHE WAS AMAZING
ALW composed the score for The Music of the Night already back in 1983
It was for his first attempt at "Aspects of Love"

Dreams of summer
Secret smiles between us
Our first meeting
You thought they had seen us
We first tried explaining
Then it started raining
Then you said: I love you girl and then
I'm much too old to fall in love again
Time was golden
I felt I was falling
Waiting, smiling
Hoping you'd be calling
Loving eyes above me
Showing me you love me
I woke up beside you once and said:
I don't think I could fall in love again
Married man
You were happy and you let me know
As you ran up the stairs to reach my door
But I cried every time you had to go
Should have said: Don't come here anymore
Winter, silence
Shadows on the ceiling
You said you're
Too young to know the feeling
Then your voice seemed colder
Then you said: I've told her
I said: Well, she's older but then
She's young enough to fall in love again
So I tried to forget her
And you'd live with me
But you cried when she begged you to return
You said: No, that's all over, but you lied
Married man, are you too old to learn?
Spring can be
A very cruel season
Help me, help me
Don't ask for a reason
Please, you must believe me
I want you to leave me
One day if you're free but not till then
I'm young enough to fall in love again
I'm young enough to fall in love again

Close your eyes
For your eyes will only tell the truth
And the truth isn't what you want to see
In the dark it is easy to pretend
That the truth is what it ought to be
Daytime, release it
Meaningless and fleeting
Bird song, small talk
Endless words of greeting
As the night is nearing
The touch, the taste and hearing
Gradually replace redundant sight
Preparing for the music of the night
Close your eyes

Let its embers crescendo into flame

Love ❤️ this
Obviously Sarah's score appeared later in a moderately successful show called Phantom of the Opera.
By then, it would forever be known as "The Music of the Night."
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Lyrics by Charles Hart & Richard Stilgoe
Andy is so good looking! Even better now ! 💕
I guess some people age better than others. Original Phantom Michael Crawford doesn’t look too bad himself.
I'm glad they changed the lyrics
These unused lyrics were by Trevor Nunn, who would later co-direct the original West End production of “Les Miserables.” He also wrote some of the English lyrics with Herbert Kretzmer.
“The Music of the Night” was given a lyrical overhaul by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe. Stilgoe had previously worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber on “Starlight Express.”
They’re just airing the dirty laundry of their affair like that?!? Bold! 😂
I’m still hoping that Sarah will get the chance to finally record the song with these lyrics to bring it full circle.
12:28 this is the phantom melody
Otherwise known as “The Music of the Night.”
3:44 what huge grassy area is that on the left? Name? Is it still there? What city?
NYC
@@geaj thanks but I literally mean what street is it off of , next to, does this strip of grass have a name? Chelsea piers? High line? Etc….
Which TV show was this?
I believe it has to be The Merv Griffin Show.
Este el marido de Sarah si muy majo el Famoso Compositor ,,,,,,y Sarah dónde está???????
WTF - Christine singing Music of the Night....where's the Phantom? Thank god Charles Hart sorted out those pesky lyrics...
That is because-it was considered for a different musical he was writing!
Charles Hart's lyrics are an embarrassment, were never considered good, and still aren't
So did Richard Stilgoe.
The final version is credited as follows:
“The Music of the Night”

@@kevinwilson3609that’s your opinion. But it’s still the most memorable song from “Phantom.”

Ackerman is superb, but she seems (to me) to be a bit of a LuPone impersonator.
Her dancing is bothering me....weird movements. LuPone, on talk shows, just stands and sings and it is spectacular.
