Just a suggestion for when you inevitability climb back up to paint/cap the poles. Pour some concrete down em to absorb any moisture that got in there, let it set, cap it, and then weld on some collars to slide an oversized pipe down onto that can pivot and weld some pulleys to the pivot pipes. Then you can run the tension cables through the pulleys and down to ground level for retensioning or knockdown when/if the mesh needs repair or replacement.
Make sure to cap your poles. Will fill with water and rust out from the inside or will give your wasps and hornets a spot to place nests.. which won't be good later on. Also you should criss-cross the wire, corner to corner, to keep it from sagging in the middle. But I love it!!
I’d actually fill them with sand or gravel or dirt and cap the tops with foam or flexseal or the like. You want a “thud” rather than the hollow “ping” for a permanent vertical pipe.
if you want more shade, I suggest buying another canopy, identical in size and lay it on top of the one you already have. I have done that and it works perfectly. You can attach the top canopy to the bottom one with zip ties. Also think about hanging some 3 foot canopies along the back and sides to shield the sun coming in from the side. It will give you a larger shaded area directly under the roof canopy as the sun moves during the day or stays lower in the sky during winter months.

just thought of an idea for tensioning the canopy, at each of the four corners you could have a length of chain link that can slot into slots cut into the top of the pipes so as it stretches you can retention it by moving the chain up one link and hanging the excess inside the pipe. a little trick we use in aus the 3,4,5 rule. makes a perfect 90 degree corner. well in metric not sure with banana units. 3-30-300mm one side 4-40-400mm other side and the difference between the marks should be 5-50-500mm to make a 90 degree corner.

ONE OTHER COMMENT ON CONCRETE. In addition to waiting for concrete to cure, you should check the mix ticket from the driver. If you are getting concrete from a mix plant you should not pour it if it is more than 30 min old. Also you should know what slump level you should have and buy your own slump cone and slump mixing rod. As important as a hammer to a carpenter.
Matt right there you should just build the roof like what you have at the old range..then it’s not a worry out of the elements and looks nicer.your doing half the work already and you know that’s what you want there so just do it use the poles and frame off those and a roof and boom looks great and serves all purposes 🤷🏻♂️ be safe bud thanks for all you guys do
If you end up in need of more shade/shelter look into repurpose of old ship sails it should be fairly reasonable it’s pretty hardy stuff and it’s UV stable.
there is a method called 3,4,5 to make sure you are square. measure 3' on one string 4' on the other. then the two points should measure 5' to each other. like a triangle. You can also measure corner to corner. should be the same measurement if square.
Would be good to have a tarp you can interchange in during the rainy weather (or even just a tin roofed area) as well, but that looks awesome Matt, good job!
16:48 In reality, you would be better off having those posts leaning outwards given the type of load they will be bearing. It's nice that you make yourself available when you can. No one should expect it but it's a nice bonus.
We used to have shades like this over the sheep yards and we would weld a pipe between the tops of the post's and a pipe in a cradle one one side joined to the shade cloth like a manual grain truck tarp with so we could role it up so the wind wouldn't kill it

But he would then need a full row of posts on the back too and he would need many wires from front to back to be able to attach the canopy sides also to keep the tension in that direction as well. it would be a lot of work because there is a grommet along the sides of the canopy almost every two feet and every one of them needs to be unhooked, and hooked up again.
MATT those cable clamps are backwards and will fail under a wind load. Never saddle a dead horse.
a little trick we use in aus the 3,4,5 rule. makes a perfect 90 degree corner. well in metric not sure with banana units. 3-30-300mm one side 4-40-400mm other side and the difference between the marks should be 5-50-500mm to make a 90 degree corner.
Hey Matt nice work but some of your cable clamps are seated incorrectly Never Saddle Dead Horse you have saddles on the dead end of the wire they should be on the running wire
You could do Orchard netting you could do 50% to 70% sunlight or more we use it for birds so they don't get it that much shaded but they way we have it its really high and it would be a prefect option for you
I'd fly in and have been dying to see the airstrip get rehabbed. Short flight from Houston, but flying it always more fun! I know many places that do an annual fly-in. Check out Reklaw Fly In. Good sized event, folks camping, volunteers, pancake breakfasts, etc. Tons of fun, good PR, good people. I'd be happy to help get the airstrip back safe again.
The tensioners are called turn buckles. I have a shade cloth over my vegetable garden for when it’s 105 outside.
Also, you probably want something like 90 percent shade cloth out there.
Looks awesome!!
People a few hundred years from now are going to say. What is this creation, and ponder on what it is. Does the alignment go with the stars, does it go with the moon and sun??🤔😅
-us nope we just shot at it....
“From the finds, we surmise that they seemed to value lead and copper as valuable metals they sacrificed to their gods”
@@franciscodanconia4324 Facts ...😅
It's covering the treasure map for oak island
Looks good! Have you thought about putting some trees up around the outskirts and on either side of the signs you have there? Would really help with the wind and provide some closer shade too.
Give yourself credit, you're standing in the middle of a huge project , I can't believe how far the range berm has come. Seems like dump trucks were on top a couple months ago
String line one corner the length, put a maker, then from same point same length 45 degree on the string line is last corner ,then measure the width done all square ... but i get ur point about the lay of land
USE A RANGE FINDER 😊
Mikey’s that friend you can count on to know how to get any job done 🤣
* I would recommend a floor slab with like a gutter/ catch so you can sweep spent casings into for easy clean up. Maybe even reload them for guest purchase.
I learned recently that you can clear out large amount of various sized trees by pulling a heavy chain across the ground using two bulldozers. It's super fast and pulls out the trees, roots, stumps, and all!
Nice! Also is good to weld some 45° pipes for flags in all post so You have nice place to hang bunch of different flags to posts.
Sounds like your runway is the perfect opportunity for a drag strip...
Turn the airstrip into a long range gun range?
You could use springs to keep the tension constant so if it gets stretched over time won’t be a problem
I think they're wanting to square it up w/ longitude and latitude, also.
That's literally the Pythagorean theorem... You just used the wrong words. a²+b²=c²
Would be good to have a tarp you can interchange in during the rainy weather (or even just a tin roofed area) as well, but that looks awesome Matt, good job!
You should use carabiners to connect the canopy to the cables. That would make it much easier to put it up and take it down if needed.
This type of shade sail isn’t designed to go up and down. They’re meant to be a permanent fixture.
16:48 In reality, you would be better off having those posts leaning outwards given the type of load they will be bearing.
It's nice that you make yourself available when you can. No one should expect it but it's a nice bonus.
Use the special right triangles. the most common one is 3-4-5. It can be scaled up too. 6-8-10 or 9-12-15.
They did, it's call the Pythagorean theorem.
a²+b²=c²
@@dipgrizzly25 yeah but the special right triangles are already done and easy to remember. No math needed
We used to have shades like this over the sheep yards and we would weld a pipe between the tops of the post's and a pipe in a cradle one one side joined to the shade cloth like a manual grain truck tarp with so we could role it up so the wind wouldn't kill it
Could remake the landingstrip into a dragrace track 🤙🏻
Use oval quick-links between the cables and the canopy grommets. It will make changing out the canopy easier than threading cables.
11:02 man it sure would be a shame if cleetus came out for a collab on that runway!
Just what YT needs, _more _ Cleetus fucking McFarland… 🤦🏻♂️
exactly what i was thinking
