you might as well get a nice fat paint brush and a bucket for seasoning that finish. your basically treating it like a cast iron pan. make sure you put a tarp or something under it at the house for the first couple of uses, that way you dont make a mess with the oil dripping off on to the stonework.
I prefer Linseed oil to cooking oil for the exterior, for a couple reasons. One, it's much easier to apply a thick coat with a rag. Second it darkens the metal nicely and even if you don't get the whole cooker up to a high enough temp to season, it will still stay applied in the weather. A few coating of linseed early on and you can occasionally reapply when you remember every 6 months or so.
Matt, Start with Pork Butts. Super easy, however a long cook. It will help you get comfortable with running the new cooker and pulled pork is really versatile. Sandwiches, omelets/breakfast burritos. My family likes to use left over pulled pork to make enchiladas too. Pork butts are a very forgiving meat to cook.
22:34 the thick tray that is added to the firebox is your ash catcher. This will make cleanouts a lot easier. Especially if you need to do it during an extra long cook
The best feed bin I’ve seen is an old non operational freezer. They seal up and keep everything dry. Hold the feed smell in as well. Plus easy to clean.
I have chickens, and also have zero rodent issues using metal trash cans to store both the feed bags(large cans) and bags that are emptied into medium size cans for daily use.

@@samtrosper7224 don't know about that. My family have been ranchers in Arizona since 1880's, well before Az was even a state and we know a thing or two about stuff like this. Copper works. Do some internet research you will see many ranchers doing this
@@blkmoon5596 not sure why you thought all that was necessary, your families past bonafides makes mo difference in the anonymity of the internet. I have a smoker like that and I painted the legs and rhino lined the grate on the bottom. Keeps it cleaner and grease doesn't make it come off like it did to the paint. It is best to rub it while it is real hot and it will shine. Think about "Seasoning" a iron skillet. Metal trash cans with metal lids are the best. Plus if the roof leaks they wont let the inside get wet.
Hey Matt, love that you are in your smoking era! I’m here for it. One thing to think about, I did this on my Black Stone, take a torch to the far end, smoke stack, it needs to get around 500° at that end for the oil to cure and not be sticky and torching it is a good way for that to happen.
I am just a few months older than you - and I am getting into my smoking years as well. I love it! Enjoy wathing the things that you do to improve your family
Bacon wrapped Pickles smokes are awesome, just try it. Also jalapeno cheddar wrapped bacon bites. Smoked Mac n cheese, baked beans with meat chunks . So much smoked goodness.
I can see the kids faces as they saw the babies! Thank you for sharing them with us. I can remember when the mama was a baby. God bless you all! Merry Christmas!
Having never heard of cabrito before, I looked it up before watching the video. I don't think that is something that I would eat. I like most other "meats", ok, not beef liver, but, for me, that isn't something that I don't think I want to try. When I have the time, I'll watch the video and update my thoughts. Love you Matt! You're a good man, with a heart of gold, and you have so much energy. Honestly don't know how you find the time to get everything done and everything organized. All the Best!
Love your show! In answer to your question about best container to put feed in, brand new galvanized garbage cans. The lids fit quite snug and keep the mice out. That's what I keep my sweet feet in and my chicken feed in.
The flat top cooker is an ash catcher so the bottom of the box doesn't get heat holes or cook throughs. You can also put legs on it to make an air gap. But you can use a cast iron skillet on the top of the box to cook as well.
Honestly, the pitting from the rust makes that look soo much better. I have a straigh taper point pry bar from the early 1800s not a lick of rust but its heavily pitted. Love that thing
Always cut hay/straw strings at the knot, that way when you need a sting to tie up something you will have the whole string that is knot less, btw you don’t need to cut them, you can pop the knot by holding up the bale perpendicular across your legs, about upper thigh high, knots on top, grab the outside sting, in a fluid motion drop the bale and pop up the string, the force with pop the string at the knot - practice makes perfect
We always used a combination of 6-toed barn cats (We always looked for 6-toed cats for luck) and chickens. During the spring, it was open range on mice for the chickens. Throughout the rest of the year, the 6-toed barn cats took care of the rest.

I started my electric smoker and got my ham in it. Got my temp dialed in at 240-250 and sat down to watch some UA-cam, and started to watch this video. I am doing my first smoke ever, so I hope everything turns out good
@32:14, I love the Disney World Resort mug being used to dish out the food!
Our goat had its first kid in the fall. pretty awesome
Hello, The old metal milk cans work great to put feed in you can pick them up cheap most the time or new but thats a nice smoker and may you and family Have a Merry Christmas
Put some copper chunks in the bottom of their water trough. Helps keep algae growing in the water down and mosquito larvey down. Don't know how but it does
A silver coin is not a bad idea for the goat water trough either.
Yep, copper tubing cut offs work well.
Silver also works fine, it is a common ingredient in water filters for its ability to reduce algae and bacteria build up. Copper is more common to use in things like livestock because it is better for algae control and more cost effective, while silvers ability to help with bacteria is not helpful its not the most cost effective way to control bacteria. Since we are stating completely irrelevant family history, my family ran cattle in Scotland for hundred of years prior to your family being in the US.
@ settlers heading west on wagon trains carried barrels of water to drink. They often put silver coins into the barrels to keep water fresh and drinkable . Silver has antibacterial properties.
Those goats are the cutest thing EVER!. Marry christmas everyone!
32:50 galvanized trash cans are perfect
I vote Jingle and Bell for their names. Merry Christmas from momma goat to you and yours lol. Love the content and how it is all over the place! Keep safe, Keep warm and Keep being amazing!
dam that smoker sells for $4k now days!! well then i need to post a couple of mine then because i went on a building smokers kick a few years ago during the pandemic and ended up making 8 too many after i made the 2 I needed one for cabin 1 for home.. for my animal feed i use the old school style metal garbage cans that are like 35-39 gallons because they come with a matching metal lid and i have yet to see a varmit get into or thru one if an animal figures out how to flip the lid off i stick a concrete block so if it manages ever again it'll flattin it by the time they both hit the ground but ya been using the metal cans for 10+ years now and not one breach since
Nice job on the smoker. Merry Christmas Matt and all the family
Was Here before the title changed 👍🏼
I have a smoker like that and I painted the legs and rhino lined the grate on the bottom. Keeps it cleaner and grease doesn't make it come off like it did to the paint.
It is best to rub it while it is real hot and it will shine. Think about "Seasoning" a iron skillet.
Metal trash cans with metal lids are the best. Plus if the roof leaks they wont let the inside get wet.
Merry Christmas Matt and crew
Your channel is proof that you could literally do anything like clean rust and I’d watch it. 😂
Matt, you know that dinging noise in your truck that keeps sounding, that's your seatbelt warning you to PUT IT ON ;) ❤️
That smoker outro is what I come to expect from Matt. Pure genius.
Hey Matt, love that you are in your smoking era! I’m here for it. One thing to think about, I did this on my Black Stone, take a torch to the far end, smoke stack, it needs to get around 500° at that end for the oil to cure and not be sticky and torching it is a good way for that to happen.
That goats comedic timing on the names was priceless😂
I am just a few months older than you - and I am getting into my smoking years as well. I love it! Enjoy wathing the things that you do to improve your family
34:35 that is a Woodcock
Been in the woods looking for them for a month now. Figures the closest I get to one is on Matt's channel
Also known as a timberdoodle
I love how the goat laughed after Matt said the names of the baby goats
Bacon wrapped Pickles smokes are awesome, just try it. Also jalapeno cheddar wrapped bacon bites. Smoked Mac n cheese, baked beans with meat chunks . So much smoked goodness.
Got to weld some flat 1"x1/4" flat stock around the edge of the firebox so you can make breakfast on that one as well...
Or just go to Walmart and get a cast iron grill. Which is removable for cleaning and to keep under cover from rusting.
@KameraShy of course, but he has said that he loved cooking on his other one like that.
I can see the kids faces as they saw the babies! Thank you for sharing them with us. I can remember when the mama was a baby. God bless you all! Merry Christmas!
The boogie bird was a woodcock. Call the babies chocolate and milk.
The names are awesome! Already watched on pepper box
Lard works real good too
so Rocky was not wasting time after all 😜
Nothing cuter than baby goats and baby lambs!
The flat top cooker is an ash catcher so the bottom of the box doesn't get heat holes or cook throughs. You can also put legs on it to make an air gap. But you can use a cast iron skillet on the top of the box to cook as well.
we're sitting around 0-5 degrees on our farm right now.. everyones plenty happy, cow was out playing in the snow today.
Honestly, the pitting from the rust makes that look soo much better. I have a straigh taper point pry bar from the early 1800s not a lick of rust but its heavily pitted. Love that thing
Hell yeah brother!
That smoker was a fined, im loving the smoking related content
Metal bins work pretty well to keep rats out. They make and sell tall cylindrical bins, I use them for bird feed and haven't had any problems
Chocolate for the older one
I'm whipping up some fresh salsa, let me know when those are coming off the grill.
They both are so cute!!! Wishing you and the family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year🎉🎊🎈
Always cut hay/straw strings at the knot, that way when you need a sting to tie up something you will have the whole string that is knot less, btw you don’t need to cut them, you can pop the knot by holding up the bale perpendicular across your legs, about upper thigh high, knots on top, grab the outside sting, in a fluid motion drop the bale and pop up the string, the force with pop the string at the knot - practice makes perfect
I personally love watching the channel navigate the smoking world. Smoking meat not meth is a favorite hobby of mine.
We always used a combination of 6-toed barn cats (We always looked for 6-toed cats for luck) and chickens. During the spring, it was open range on mice for the chickens. Throughout the rest of the year, the 6-toed barn cats took care of the rest.
Thanks for the Christmas eve video, it was very thoughtful of you to leave your employees to enjoy their day as well♻️. You're a good guy Matt, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you & your family!🎄💕
I used the airtight plastic containers from the feed store. They are whit and have red tops that screw on. There’s a seal that keeps the odor of the food in the bucket. I also use it for my pellets for my smoker.
hey Matt we use 30 gallon galvanized steel trash cans with lids for our animal feed. Stays dry and nothing can get in. Tractor supply has them.
