I used to own an identical Ric Fireglo 4001 from 1968, serial number HH ... it had the horseshoe pickup, so I think you're bass there has a replacement bridge pickup which is okay.
Pretty sweet bass! I have a ‘71 caramel colored Rick, with the stereo output, triangle fret markers, and the high-output pick ups. Pretty sure the whole thing is original… Including (get this) tuners that TURN BACKWARDS!🤪
I think it sounds great “on its own”. I find you can coax a lot of character out of Rics just by an aggressive right hand technique - a bit like Geddy 😊
Great video (and beard) as always man! Love the sound of this bass but if I could make one suggestion I’d say back the treble and high kids off the pedal a bit. Sounds a bit harsh around 2-3kHz
You think that drive pedal sounded like shit? Drive is what makes a Rickenbacker sound like a Rickenbacker. Those who like to just plug straight in cranking up the bass and setting the treble and midrange to almost zero… might as well save a few thousand dollars and get a pawn shop el cheapo for 100 dollars
@@MyVideos-fm7ug yeh I did and still do … some drive pedals I like but this one leaves me cold ! Glad you like it though :) take care and thanks for letting me know how you feel
Stunning bass - you'r right - they don't come that cheap. Amazing treble, but what is a Doug (?) pedal? That boosts the treble to sound just like Chris Squire? Thanks.
@@bassjaymi Thank you! Will look it up but as I live in Australia it's probably not going to be cheap... I assume as the tone controls have been bypassed, the tone is basically flat?
Depends on how close the construction is to a real one. There are some very close vintage Japanese copies that would probably be indistinguishable with real Rick electronics, all the more recent Chinese/Other cheap knockoffs are firewood as far as coming anywhere close to a real Rick is concerned. It has to be the correct 33 - 1/4" Scale with full Maple construction and the pickups have to be positioned correctly. Beyond that, there's a huge amount of variety between real Ricks, so there are almost certainly some copies out there that are better than some subpar examples of the real thing.
@@bassjaymi I get it, but even in really expensive headphones that 4001 sounds unusually thin. With the knobs bypassed, the capacitors are also bypassed, , especially the one that’s meant to balance out bridge and neck pickup. It’s little things.
Wow, fantastic in all positions
It's a work of art.
best sounding rick ever
Sounds awesome brother... love the classic Rick tone. ✌😎
There's another one coming....

I have actually seen both so neither are surprising! :)

Those would be original! they should be flat tipped Grovers....should be smooth and sweet sounding...

definitely!
Really good thanks
Beautiful. I guess the lower output does escentuate the topend. Nice
More of that traditional Ric tone

Noted! Thanks for the kind words!
@@bassjaymi No worries! Side note: the tones you got with that Grabber in your latest video were absolutely mind blowing!
@@User-jk8wq That one may be for sale or trade VERY soon! Again, you are most kind!
Was about to comment it sounded like utter shite and then you said ' Lets turn the doug pedal off' .... and it sounded gorgeous
🤣🤣🤣To each his own mate!

Never saw a 1968 without the horseshoe. I guess there's a first time for everything. I did own a 1969 that had no horseshoe.

The dUg pedal is by Tech21NYC. It is the signature pedal of dUg Pinnick from King's X....has a LOT of tones in it!

It's $559 at Manny's...
@@ianr02 ouch
Did this have the capacitor still on the bridge pickup in this video?
No, the pots are all bypassed on this bass-so what you heard is ALL pickups....
@@bassjaymi wow that’s bridge pickup does scream then, I though it sounded very thin from the cap but no!
@@bassmanluke it shreds on its own!
Are 1968's stereo? BTW I bought your book....cool.
Not to my knowledge, they are mono....thanks and hope you enjoy it!
Is the pickup cover still plastic or metal in 1968? And yes, I played a 60's Rick and like the neck better than what they have now. Thanks.

@@bassjaymi Thanks.
question....buying a faux Rick and changing the pickups with the REAL Rick pickups....would that work for the Rick sound?

what advantage is it to bypass the tone and volume pots.. very odd to me..
Live players do this sometimes as it keeps it on full throttle at all times
I’ve been a “live player” for 30 years playing Rickenbackers. It takes minimal effort to turn your knobs all the way up, and they’ll stay that way.
@@nolantaylor656 every player is different and the owner of the bass made that decision years ago....

Ric’s sound to mechanical.
I think that is why people like them...and you can do some cool sounds with mechanical
