Thanks for your kind words. I'm working on the scenery at the moment but could only do so much until I got my U.P. Big Boy (2 years on back order) to make sure I had clearance on the mainline curves, which are OK. I've also put a platform edge on, which will have to come off because it's British. The layout in not prototypical, but do want so realism. I have also been making wire trees to find a good method of production, which I have also established. Things are slow I must say, because nothing, other the track work and wiring, would be a typical method of layout construction. Thanks once again.

Thanks Alan alan, I have described the wiring of the switches and the Smail switch motors in part 3. I have also described how to break a circle up to 90, 60, 45 and 30 degrees using only a compass. As for the timber work, that is up to the individuals needs and is hard to advise people on without being there. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. It also would be nice to publish the design, but I don't know if they would be interested, and I don't know how. Thanks

A shay would be nice to have in DCC, however it is not a shay. It is a Bachmann Alco 2-6-2 and was purchased as a tester so no pickup can affect the challenger or the FEF-3. The table's mainline curves were designed for prototypical running of the Big Boy which I have also put on order from my supplier. The Big Boy was designed to take a 2% radius which equates to 40 inch radius for HO or 20 inch radius for N. -Peter

Thanks for your nice comment. It's dimensions are 4ft x 6ft 6inches. The dowels in the middle are scenery supports, they just need to be cut down when I get the height appropriate. Will do a video on how I got its current stage if people are interested. - Peter
I'm pleased you like the layout. From memory, there"s about 35 lengths of Peco track or a box and a half. The track was the cheapest part, the turnouts and the Smail switch motors were the expensive parts. So far I've paid approx. $2500 on it and plan to put signalling in. I also plan to put current block detectors in so it can be ran fully automated via the computer as shown in part 3. This would require rewiring the layout into blocks which can be done later without any problems of access. There is a lot more to be done on it, including making a glass top.
I bought everything from a model train shop, mainly for two reasons. I've been stung before buying over the net, (although not with train equipment), and talking face to face with someone can help with advise on how to do things. If, however you happy to purchase off the internet, Peco Models (track & turnouts) and Circuitron Electronics for Model Railroads ( Smail switch motors) should be trustworthy. This may also reduce cost. As for track cleaning, I currently use a track cleaning rubber which I use sparingly so as not to change the rail profile due to their abrasiveness. I am planing to purchase a dcc fitted track cleaning car soon now that all the under layout track work in becoming enclosed.

I will be posting part 4 soon, whilst I establish whether the under track de-coupling magnets are in the right locations, and that there is no dead spots or derailments. I have created a shell over the areas which require covering, but after recently purchasing a track cleaning car, I need to make sure it travels around the layout, on all parts of the track before proceeding. The scenery may take some time however, for I will have to stop before putting the trees on, so I can make and stain the timber and glass top which will enclose the layout. I would like to say, that when part 5 is posted, the FEF-3 will have sound and I should have my long awaited Union Pacific Big Boy (all going well.) Oh, and yes I do have a live cat, but she wont come up this end of the house.

I have a number of medical conditions that sees me in hospital twice a year and one that restricts my ability to work on it for more that a hour or two a day, hence why it is taking so long. I have not kept a time line on it, however an able body person should be capable of reaching the same level in about 6 to 12 months easy. I will like to advise that there is a couple of things, adopted from the engineering industry, that are necessary to ensure strength in the hinged (upper) part of the table. If you have any questions about it's construction, I am more that happen to answer them.
Hi Peter, Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear about your medical issues. I also have some so can empathize. I was an avid model builder when young and even after College until our son came and then my time was spent with him. I have ALWAYS wanted to build a model railroad but have never lived in a house that was conducive to it. So I watch others projects and live vicariously through them. :-) It is obvious that you have some engineering or construction background or if not you process a natural gift for design and fabrication. Keep it up and I will continue to enjoy.

In regards to KATO Unitrack I'm not sure, I've never used it and am not familiar with it. However if it is flexible track it could be used. Yes I'll be posting updates as I go along. The next one will hopefully be when I finish the terrain shell, with the U.P. Bigboy and the sound decoder in the FEF-3. Three locos with sound, boy is it going to noisy.
In the next update I'll have all my Locos on the layout. I don't have much rolling stock because the construction is quite expensive. When I've finished buying all my structures, signalling, ground cover and tree foliage, I'll start buying some.
I have had rolling stock behind the locos, just not in this video. The largest grade on the mainline is approx. 1.75%, with the grades on the helixes about 2.5% but are a tight radius so only small locos will work on them.
Yes you are right in saying that there's a lot of track, however much of it wont be see. The centre section will be under ground and a lot will be covered by trees (a lot of trees). If you were to sit at each corner of the table you will only be able to see that corner and not much else. I would love to have the room for a much larger layout, but the wife wont allow it.
I can run 2 trains on 2 loops whilst performing shunting operations on a third, or run 3 trains on 3 loops whilst shunting on the lower outer yards only.
Currently I am only running the U.P. Challenger on the layout. I do have a U.P. Bigboy on back order which is supposed to be arrive mid 2017. Both the Challenger and the Bigboy (on order) are manufactured by Athearn. I am also having a sound card installed in Kato FEF-3 which should be finished and ready for pick-up, in the next few days.

@@SwapnilBhartiya Thank-you for your kind words. The radii of all the curves are as follows. The two helix curves are 10"(255mm). The other radii I used were 11.8"(300mm),13.7"(350mm),16.5"(420mm),18.1"(460mm),20"(510mm) and 21.6"(550mm). All the radii are measured to the track centreline. The reason I don't run larger locomotives around the helixes is due to the grade approx. 3% and that they are to tight for the Bigboy and the Challenger. I did buy (not on the videos) a large UP diesel to pull a track cleaning wagon through the the helix curves and up the grades which works well.
Too much track, there has to be a ratio of landscape to track, maybe if some of the dead ends were removed and one loop with some of the track in a mountain then it could have space for at least the station buildings
Thanks for the comment, and you're right, there is a lot of track work but it's also designed to be set and forget. I thought under these operating conditions having just 2 loops may not have been interesting enough. There will also be a station in 1 of the corners.
oh yes I completely forgot about that. I didn't think the turbine housing would be of any great size to hear any noise from. then again it has been years since I have been around any steam locos

Doing the table top now it is currently in frame form awaiting assembly, but convid got in the way. Hopefully it can be restart when workshop opens.

@@SwapnilBhartiya Thank-you for your kind words. The radii of all the curves are as follows. The two helix curves are 10"(255mm). The other radii I used were 11.8"(300mm),13.7"(350mm),16.5"(420mm),18.1"(460mm),20"(510mm) and 21.6"(550mm). All the radii are measured to the track centreline. The reason I don't run larger locomotives around the helixes is due to the grade approx. 3% and that they are to tight for the Bigboy and the Challenger. I did buy (not on the videos) a large UP diesel to pull a track cleaning wagon through the the helix curves and up the grades which works well.
Too much track, there has to be a ratio of landscape to track, maybe if some of the dead ends were removed and one loop with some of the track in a mountain then it could have space for at least the station buildings
Thanks for the comment, and you're right, there is a lot of track work but it's also designed to be set and forget. I thought under these operating conditions having just 2 loops may not have been interesting enough. There will also be a station in 1 of the corners.

Yes, dynamos were driven by steam turbines to supply electrical power to the locomotives lighting systems.
oh yes I completely forgot about that. I didn't think the turbine housing would be of any great size to hear any noise from. then again it has been years since I have been around any steam locos
