Hi Sam, I have been watching you since you got your Decoy and very much enjoy your content. The riding conditions here are very different, it rains most of the time, so we do face different challenges on our trails. I spent over a month trying to decide between the Kenevo, the Meta and the Decoy Elite, and my final decision was the Decoy, so I thought I would explain my reasons to give an alternative point of view for anyone faced with a similar decision at the moment. I could not get a Meta for a test but was able to get a Kenevo, I had it for nearly two weeks (long story) and got to ride it 6 times. I was very happy that I could test this bike because everyone online has given it such rave reviews. I have the Decoy CF Pro 2019 for 18 months and ride 3 times a week. We are lucky to have a huge range of trails here from 120km over mountain walking trails, XC trails, Enduro, DH and Bike-Park. The Decoy is amazing on all of these. The only issue I had with the Decoy is the 2.8 DHR on the rear. If I did not check the tyre pressure on every ride, I would split the side wall on Enduro/DH trails - you need to keep the pressure above 24PSI. However, they are easy to stitch and repair with motocross patches, and to be honest the feel of the lighter casing and the extra grip is worth the odd puncture problem. The main reason I wanted to test the Kenevo was to compare what many people regard as the best motor, tuned by Specialized, to what is now regarded as old technology on the Decoy. The first difference is the torque, 90Nm to 70Nm on the E8000. I did not notice any real difference ( a very slight difference but only because I was looking for it). I had my son with me, he is 10Kg lighter than me and he was on the Decoy, I could not stay with him going up fire roads, he just pulled away. The Kenevo is about 3kg heavier than the Decoy, this may be why I did not notice a big difference. The biggest difference was on very technical climbs. I have read many reviews of the E8000 saying its hard to control on a technical climb. I don’t agree with this, it takes a little getting used to, to balance the power, but with the E8000 on the Decoy, you can stop on a difficult section, track stand, reposition with a hop and go again, the power is instant. This is not the case on the Kenevo. It is a good climber, once you keep going and don’t stop. If you stop, there is no power, you have to get the bike moving again before you get power. This is a 25Kg bike, I was exhausted after doing a section that I know very well and is no problem on the Decoy. I was not able to get up this section on the Kenevo without walking parts of it. I did this section 3 times over the two weeks, and lots of other technical uphill sections, because all the reviews rave about this bike going uphill and the motor, but give me the E8000 on the Decoy any day. One other small point, the walk mode is much better on the Decoy, it takes far too long for this mode to kick in on the Kenevo. On the down hill sections the Kenevo is a beast, very planted, great fun. However, it has an issue, the brakes are not up to the job!!! Spending €8,200.00 on a bike and getting average brakes, that’s not ok. I noticed this on the trails, it took longer to slow than the Decoy, but when I came down a section of fire road, between trails, I thought I would go into a wall at the end, it just would not stop. If you pull the brakes on the Decoy you can lock up both wheels if you want, the difference is night and day. Before riding the Kenevo, I had bought into the idea that bikes like the Decoy may be over spec on components, do we need the top of the range components? Or do specialised have it right, spend tine and money on R&D in the bikes. Well after riding the Kenevo for two weeks, I would feel ripped - off if I spent €8,200.00 on a bike with brakes that just can’t stop the bike and seat post with play in it. The part they are supposed to excel in, the motor and the tune of it, in my opinion, I rather the E8000 and have power when I want it. So, after all that, I was left with a decision on the Decoy Elite or the Meta. Based on the rave reviews of the Meta and the preference to go with the new motor, I would lean towards the Meta, however, it is heavier, and I did notice this on the Kenevo, a few extra Kg might not sound like a lot, but if you are lifting it in and out of a pick-up or over gates, it makes a difference. The Meta in the same spec is €500 more than the Decoy - not really part of the decision. I am not sure about your comment on how planted the Meta feels, you have changed the Decoy with the 27 front, and I prefer the Decoy on scary downhill sections compared to the Kenevo. With the new Fox 38, I think the Decoy will be comparable to anything out there. The Decoy has the new Crankbrothers synthesis E11 wheels. Again, probably over spec for the average rider, but seriously cool wheels!! And the Decoy is Carbon, again, Meta al frame, not so cool. But I may still lean to the Meta. The biggest difference for me, and you did not mention it, is you can get the Decoy Elite now! I ordered mine two weeks ago and it has been shipped! The Meta is saying available from June, which means shipping in July if you are lucky. Is it worth waiting 6 months for the EP8? That’s 70 -75 days out on the bike, 200 odd hours in the saddle, just to have a motor that feels a bit better - no way! Of course, this is just my opinion, hope it helps someone. Keep up the great work!
Hey mate thanks for your comments! I’m super glad your happy with the Decoy it’s a great bike and I agree with some of what your saying but after ridden both I’m happier on the new meta it’s a great bike and the EP8 has really started to grow on me! Try and get a ride on one it’s a way more advanced feeling.
Thanks Sam, I will let you know what I think of the Elite when it arrives, compared to the 2019 Pro. As for the EP8, I will probably upgrade in a years time.
Didn't it think it was possible but now even more excited for my Commencal delivery! Late February hopefully, thanks again for the videos and chit-chat help 😬👍
Thanks Sam, have watched a bunch of your videos now and get a lot of value from your thoughts! Much appreciated. I’m lining up for a Meta Power SX 2021 I’m pretty sure. Thanks Sam! Great content!
Hi Sam, this review almost exactly mirrored my thinking. Had a Decoy Elite on order since August but COVID and YT supply chain issues caused all sorts of delivery problems so pulled the pin and went for a Commencal SX Signature 27.5, arrives in about a week. Not writing this to bag YT but they really need to release their 2021 line up like yesterday...
Sam, great content as usual, so thanks. Here in the UK the Decoy Shred has just gone up by £600 and prices and availability across the YT range have rocketed. Basically they have become unobtainable 😩 as have Propain. Lord knows what we’ll be riding in ‘21, but whatever it is it’ll be more expensive and arrive later in the year.
Yep covid and brexit tax Kinda crap really but that’s life. I say if you want to ride in 11 just order a bike 🚲 and sell if when you can get the one you really like
3 years later and the Decoy MX is the same. Just tested the Decoy (again) and the main hang-ups are small water bottle and no option to go full 29er. If it had both of these ironed out I would have their Core 5 on order.
Hey Sam, just discovered your channel and have been binging you vids. Great stuff! Subbed. I got to try a friend’s 2019 Levo and another friend’s 2019 Decoy this week. Loved both of them. The Decoy creaked quite a bit. Is that a known issue? Also, I’m ready to buy my first eBike. I ride a ton of DH in Southern California, so I’m leaning toward the Decoy. Worth me buying a used 2020 Decoy or should I wait for the new battery and possible new design and motor on the Decoy when it comes out? ✌🏼🤟🏼
Adam thanks the the kinda words... I wouldnt buy a second ebike unless I got a very very good price. also YT are great in 2019 but loads better bike right now
Great video. Very difficult to decide which one is better. IMHO, they are the best e-bikes out there and one is not better than the other, they are just different depending on the type of trails we ride. I have been riding both of them, a Meta 27.5 E8000 and a Decoy Mullet EP8 and I cannot say that one is better than the other. They are both AWESOME
Thanks Sam!!! My intuition (and the fact that 3 friends have the Meta already and love it! : ) told me the Meta is the choice. The Jersey: Looks great! If there’s any chance you could get in different colors would be great. I’d buy one. Just not a big fan of red, although it looks good. Last, I just got my New Santa Cruz “Bullit” because I have a 2018 Nomad and love the brand / bike. Had a 2008 Gen 1 Nomad before that. The Bullit is essentially the eNomad. The Heckler, the eBronson. If you ever get a chance to review the Bullit, would be cool. I have it already and very happy so it wouldn’t be to which bike to buy, just such a cool bike, and SC did so good with it, it deserves some attention. It Looks AMAZING too. 🤩. I’m a fan of your channel! Keep at it Sam! 👊😉
Hey Shaun, Thanks for the kind words.. The Meta is a rad bike but not on the same level at the Bullit if I had the money it would be my pick your a lucky guy... and glad your loving it SC always do a great job. As for the Jersey ill put a call out later in the year and get numbers could defo do it in black
I have a Decoy and love it, but today I preordered a Meta SX Signature. My concern with the Decoy is getting bike specific parts if something breaks, lack of new bikes in stock and poor customer service. Commencal support were great with my questions, whereas it's all quiet from YT at the moment. Commencal also has a showroom close to where I live. YT also used to be there, but shutdown that showroom. Only had YT bikes the last 7 years. Time to try something different.
Hi Sam. Great channel! Have u had a chance to ride the 2021 Meta Power 29? I have a deposit on one but it won't be here (Canada) until June. I see Commencal now has a Trail model Meta with 140/150 travel. I am considering getting that in the top spec model as it's available in Feb. What do u think of the Meta TR? Do u think 140/150 travel is enough? I ride singletrack trails 80% of the time but do some technical downhill mountain riding too and I like a plush feeling bike. Would appreciate your thoughts.
The tr version is very beefed up for its name. Similar geometry to the big brother meta so I can’t imagine there is a huge difference other than the 20mm suspension. On commencal don’t you have to pay full price on pre order? I didnt think you could do deposits as they’re direct sales
@@James-dn1hu Thanks for the input. Ya I was thinking the same and I love the polished aluminum frame on the meta tr signature! Not sure about anywhere else but Commencal Canada just asked me for a $1000 deposit to hold the bike.
hey mate thanks for the kind words, I personally would wait for the 29 or the SX I have only ridden the Sx and its an AMAZING bike and I'm sure both other bikes are but on ebikes I think more travel is best..
@@SamsBikes this is exactly why I love this channel. You got all the connections! Can’t wait to hear your feedback on the geometry and travel. Seems like it would be a flickable eMTB #jealous
Hi Sam, in one your recent videos you mention mulleting your SX. When will we see the results? I am on the fence over 2021 Meta Power in 27.5" or 29". I am 188cm tall so I am mentalling struggling with going back to a 27.5". If the 27.5" SX works as a mullet then it is a no brainer and I will go with that. I guess you will run a 170mm 29" fork on the front to make the geometry closer to stock? Cheers mate, love the channel.
I love my Decoy Pro Race edition. The bike is a blast to ride. My only complaint is YT's service to their customers. I find it to be substandard. I miss the bike shop support.
Good afternoon Sam, thank you for another magnificent video, as I've told you, the subtitles help! Could you tell us something about the BULLS SONIC EVO EN with the ZEB 180mm fork? Thank you.
@@SamsBikes Good afternoon Sam, thank you for your attention. I'll tell you the ebike I'm going to buy, for the moment I'm going to wait if YT renews the decoy elite and then I'll decide with the Commencal meta power 29 signature white and black
Wow first ever heard about the Canyon torque.on... I am really hyped and you got defnetly my attention! After my Canyon nerve was stolen in 2020 I now switched to the Spectral for bit more travel and fund out there, but I really want to have as my second bike an Ebike with long travel (My wife has an Spectral on which feels great but needed bit more travel for me) therefore I looked to the decoy but with the old e8000. But a Canyon torque on would be really great... Do you have some further information about it?
Yep no information I saw it on the canyon website but I think they made mistake and took it straight down! 2.2.21 big release but going to be mullet or 27 with 180-170 slack and a beast!
@@SamsBikes yeah I can see it still on the German website the annoucement "game:on" is also advertised at instagram... I just made a hard copy from the torque:on picture and it seems that it's full 27.5", I would like to see a mullet but still great thing. Can't wait for the 2nd of Feb
I agree, Meta a strong option. Problem is, their website says I will have to wait until September to receive my spec model in XL into the UK. Who is shipping full fat EP8s now, so we're ready for the spring?
Will great question... do some window shopping my advice if you want to ride this year get a inbetween bike and buy what you want when there is more stock
Hi, Sam! Two questions for you : forgetting the speed, don't you thing having a 29er up front has advantages like better roll over and that overcomes the advantages of the 27.5? I have an analog 27.5 Spectral and I love it and I'm considering buying an EMTB. But I'm afraid that if a choose a 27.5 like the SX I'll loose the opportunity to have better rolling over. I'm not a very experienced rider so every help counts 😂. The other question ir related to suspension. I know you have RS Lyrik/ZEB Ultimate on both bikes but have you ever ride a Fox 38 Grip2? How does it compare? I love the Ekano and there I can choose both, Fox being more expensive but... I have two friends ends that have Lyrik Select and I prefer by far my Fox 36 Rythmn. It locks completely if I want, it does bottom out like theirs on the same trails and seems to run higher on its travel. What's your opinion? And please continue with your reviews and kepp us update about your racing year 😁👍
Micael I'm not sure.. I feel I can ride the Sx really fast and I feel like I can Dominate the bike more than a mullet, maybe the mullet is fast but dont really care about the speed. As for suspension I think the forks are pretty simliar you need to be a real pro to quick the differences but for the rear shock the X2 is the best ! thanks for the kind words.
Hey mate, great comparison....I am between these to bikes. Just one question...I am 180cm tall...what size do you recommend me for both bikes! I appreciate your comments!!! Thanks!!!!
Mate, two things concerning the races. Both for the same reason. 1. What did you learn about setting up the coil vs the can shocks when reviewing these two? I mean as prep for your races? I recon you should go for the coil as I bet you found set up similar. 2. Concerning the Mullet vs 29 all round choice, maybe the 29 all round. So, why? Well, for these races, you may find yourself near your limits: I hope so, ‘cos you deserve success. The coil (more gentle) and 29 all round (rolls better) will give you two things as you’ll be that bit less knackered: a) better duration from your 500 battery choice and b) more effort ‘beenz’ left for the next timed stage after travelling from the last one. Just saying....
Hey mate, If I'm honest the SX just felt good straight away with almost zero set up... i felt guilty almost haha.. the Decoy was way more set up but I think I will stay with Air just I can change it up easier if I need... Especially when the trails get pretty gnarly. I think ill go Mullet but it will come down to the testing I do it will be 29er or mullet. and looking at the track from last year they were tight.. I'm going in with a open mind and what feels good ill race..
Hey Sam! I have a 2022 decoy core 4 on order. Then I came across the new Commencal meta power sx signature. So now i am second guessing my self. Now that the Duck has the ep8, would you still choose the Commencal? I like that it has a shim battery, XT brakes and Transfer post over the duck with postman and YT specific battery. Not to mention its $600 cheaper…
Around 4.09.. isn't the Meta more slack than the Decoy at 63 degree head angle. I am new to this and just got confused when you mentioned it is steeper than the Decoy which is at 64.5 degree. Sorry if this sounds silly guys but you have to start somewhere. Can anyone shed some light if i have got this wrong, much appreciated
looking at my first emtb. fatter rider (183cm, 125kg) that lives/works in the snowy mountains, Australia. can go 2020 model meta power sx sig or santa cruz heckler S for about AU$6.5k(advertised, before haggling). or, brand new norco range vlt A1 for AU$8.2k. is it worth paying the extra? appreciate any help. cheers.
Sam a question about the decoy? My friend has the 29 with e8000 motor and he puts his eco in hi setting would you say it is week in power in eco on high setting???
Still no new decoy. That’s what happens when Private Equity MBAs buy something, it gets milked for everything and innovation (risk) goes out the window. Sad. YT used to be punk rock. It’s becoming elevator music
Hey mate are we talking the SX ? I’m thinking a Medium but go with what they on their website! If your right between sizes size up for a more stable bike siE down for more fun in the jumps and the corners.
@@SamsBikes YT have usually announced their new bikes for the year by January, but of course with Covid and the new EP8 motor things might be a little delayed this year.

There is talks of me going up to Andorra and doing a back to back testing on all
@@SamsBikes this is exactly why I love this channel. You got all the connections! Can’t wait to hear your feedback on the geometry and travel. Seems like it would be a flickable eMTB #jealous
Haha thanks mate hard job but some one needs to do it haha
Hi Sam, in one your recent videos you mention mulleting your SX. When will we see the results? I am on the fence over 2021 Meta Power in 27.5" or 29". I am 188cm tall so I am mentalling struggling with going back to a 27.5". If the 27.5" SX works as a mullet then it is a no brainer and I will go with that. I guess you will run a 170mm 29" fork on the front to make the geometry closer to stock? Cheers mate, love the channel.
mate it will happen but I need 2 or me right now.. these videos take days to make but ill try!
Just ordered the shred. Got the old motor but I'm buzzing !
I love my Decoy Pro Race edition. The bike is a blast to ride. My only complaint is YT's service to their customers. I find it to be substandard. I miss the bike shop support.
Any Questions Riders..... just hit me up!
Good afternoon Sam, thank you for another magnificent video, as I've told you, the subtitles help! Could you tell us something about the BULLS SONIC EVO EN with the ZEB 180mm fork? Thank you.
Jose mate glad you like the videos and the subtitles help! I really don’t know much about bulls bikes don’t see them
Much in Madrid
Hola Sam Veo que la commencal meta es mas cara y mas basta de soldaduras de aluminio creo que esperare las nuevas YT
Thanks!!!!
All about eBikes this is the place to be 👍
Hahaha thanks 😊 rider
@@SamsBikes Great point about the adaptability of the air can - hadn’t thought of that. You’d have to take more than one spring with he coil... Hmmm 🥴
The T is super cool
totally!
Around 4.09.. isn't the Meta more slack than the Decoy at 63 degree head angle. I am new to this and just got confused when you mentioned it is steeper than the Decoy which is at 64.5 degree.
Sorry if this sounds silly guys but you have to start somewhere. Can anyone shed some light if i have got this wrong, much appreciated
yep that would of been a mistake the meta is slacker than the decoy
Placed a Preorder on the SX Race... but...June... damn...
Guess ill have to settle with my Decoy pro Race in the meantime :P
Haha hard life rider
The Commencal Meta has a pretty high bottom bracket height, did you find that a issue? Do you feel like you're on top of the bike?
Both bikes feel pretty similar on the trail
Hi Sam, does the bottom bracket seem high on the commencal meta power sx?
Sam, what’s the weight of your Meta SX please. Thanks.
good question ill weigh it this week for you
Wow the reach in XL on the Decoy is 170 the same as a Kenevo S3 ( medium )
What....? For real? That is just sad. And backwards “evolution” 😣
- tall dude at 6’4”
@@fairdinkum9454 they have a XXL size.
Yep the XL deocy is like a Large or a Medium
looking at my first emtb.
fatter rider (183cm, 125kg) that lives/works in the snowy mountains, Australia.
can go 2020 model meta power sx sig or santa cruz heckler S for about AU$6.5k(advertised, before haggling).
or, brand new norco range vlt A1 for AU$8.2k.
is it worth paying the extra?
appreciate any help.
cheers.
I would go the new Norco
@@SamsBikes cheers.
Just didn't know if it was worth the extra 30% in cost.
Especially for a first bike.
@@lukedudgeon8699 if the motor goes down your in for 2k so i personally would rather a warranty
Sam a question about the decoy? My friend has the 29 with e8000 motor and he puts his eco in hi setting would you say it is week in power in eco on high setting???
yea ECO in the e8000 doesnt give much power!
si compras la començal en andorra te cuesta 10% menos, asi que serian 6300 €
Still no new decoy. That’s what happens when Private Equity MBAs buy something, it gets milked for everything and innovation (risk) goes out the window. Sad. YT used to be punk rock. It’s becoming elevator music
Hahaha I know, new paint jobs every year but nothings new very boring
Hi Sam what do you suggest as dinension...I'm 175cm tall with An inseam of 84cm...many thanks for your answer from Italia
Hey mate are we talking the SX ? I’m thinking a Medium but go with what they on their website! If your right between sizes size up for a more stable bike siE down for more fun in the jumps and the corners.
@@SamsBikes many tks for your anwer...actually I was talking of the 29er...probably It's the same.. isn't it?
Decoy is steeper up front. You said it backwards.
Never buy yt again as they don’t honour the warranty
What happened?
Revise in 2 weeks then the new Decoy comes out :)
Really? What you thinking 🤔?
@@SamsBikes YT have usually announced their new bikes for the year by January, but of course with Covid and the new EP8 motor things might be a little delayed this year.
Very delayed...
The meta looks like the shock is rubbing on the frame ?
Hey Jon na mate its not rubbing
Decoy needs an update. None standard battery and old motor. Wide frame.
Decoy is wider?
@@bpet2237 yes fat battery.
totally!
2020 Meta was a better looking bike
Really ? no way i love the 21 models
I preferred the cranked top tube :)
I'm no expert, but from what I've seen out there shimano is the slowest motor. Bosch or Brose seems to get up hill faster.
Yep that’s true but it’s not always a race the EP8 is super natural to ride!
