I'm SO GRATEFUL I've heard Mr James Griffin in my lifetime. What a talented man. Great songwriter and singer and, a man of great humility too. His songs have had such an impact on my life. I first heard him sing "just like yesterday" when I was only 15yrs old and that was 47yrs ago. Now I'm 62yr old with a heart full of memories. Thank you Jimmy. R.I.P.
Same for me. I was 15 when I first heard him too, and fell in love with his voice and it seemed like every song that he sang spoke to my soul. I am 65 now and I still listen to those songs over and over. I wish there was a live version of Games Of Magic. I haven't been able to find one anywhere. But that song and Just Like Yesterday are 2 of my favorite songs of all time. R.I.P. Jimmy
I only discovered James Griffin after his death, sadly. I knew OF him but never heard his solo stuff until years later. First time I heard him sing Bridge Over Troubled Water I thought it was the best vocal I'd ever heard. Then I learned about HIM as a person, what a great, humble guy he was, so down to earth, etc. I don't know how a person can miss someone they've never met, but I do. I'll be a fan til the day I die myself.
Without James Griffin and David Gates there's no Bread, both so talented as singers and song writers. James Griffin won an Academy Award for his song "For all we Know". Gone too young RIP James.
Well i beg to disagree. Any band without everybody will not be a band that's why they were called a band. The remaining members, Larry Knechtel & Matt Botts were both excellent musician even DG complimented them when he was interviewed. ✌✌
@@karenhead170 He really was so kind and down to earth. He had it all, looks, talent, and a good heart. Still breaks my heart he died at only 61, and left this world without his lovely voice. He should have been as well known as David. Life sure isn't fair.
I love this and all of James Griffin's songs! He had a great gift and was a phenomenal Singer/Songwriter & Musician! I've loved his soulful, beautiful voice since first hearing him in the early 70's with Bread. He captured my heart. I'm happy to recently see him on You Tube! So great that he went on to form the groups Black Tie, The Remingtons and Tour with John Ford Coley & Terry Slyvestor. Wish I would have known that Bread got back together to Tour in 1996-97. They were amazing!
Richard Manuel and The Band brought me here. I was so used to David Gates as the lead singer of Bread, but this man's voice is special. And he's a triple threat because he's a cool songwriter and musician!
When James and David played and sang together, they were a force to be reckoned with, while both good in their solo journeys, they were never as good as when they were together, stems from their foolish pride... quite sad really... they were once 2 kings as one
I loved bread. As time has passed, I find that James had a more nuanced and textured voice. I underappreciated his talent at the time. DG surely had a knack for a pop tune and was great. What could have been for this guy though. Bad loss,
what a great live version of this song.. one of my favorites from his solo alnum in 1974. yes david gates was the driving force of bread but you cant deny james influence in the band. he always seemed to get a song of his on the b-side of the singles . but clearly both of them made up bread. like you cant have the bee gees without all 3 of them.
How did James never succeed with his songs as a solo performer after Bread? And why did Electra never give him a chance by issuing singles of his songs during the Bread years? Some of his contributions to the group were outstanding.
Check out the later part of the book, "Bread: A Sweet Surrender," by Malcolm Searles. IMO, Gates was insistent on using the name "Bread" without the permission of James Griffin, leading him to file a lawsuit. I loved the music of Bread, played most all of it. Frankly, I think Griffin was more creative, having "edgier" music along with a more dynamic voice. Whatever the reason Griffin left (firing, walking out, or otherwise), Gates should have stepped away from the name "Bread," which both owned. Lost any respect for Gates.
@@6345788I have that book and it was revealing in a number of ways about the group and their breakup. I'm a bit like you regarding Gates. He wanted nothing to do with Malcolm Searle in writing the book despite being the sole survivor of groups last iteration. The but that really got me was that he wanted 50% of the takings from their last big world tour with the other three sharing the balance. Frankly, I was surprised the tour ever took place under the circumstances. Gates music is what made Bread's name but Griffin's contribution should have been far better treated by Electra. Some of his songs, particularly on Lost Without Your Love, should have been released as singles.
I never liked Bread until I heard "Games of Magic," and then I was in love. I still feel the same way about JG vs DG. I don't know of a David Gates song that I actually like, Bread or otherwise. I don't mind him. But he's no Jimmy Griffin....
Beautiful, I did not know he wrote it. Touchy performance. Another interpretation of this song you might enjoy is by Richard Emmanuel performing alone at a bar without the Band.
That's a tough song to sing with those chord changes. I always thought his vocals were so sweet, but he could belt it out on some songs. Excellent song.
James Griffin deserved far better treatment than he recieved from Electra. I adore every Gates hit, both with Bread and as a soloist but Griffin's best songs were a match. If Electra had given some of James' songs the emphasis they gave to David's, Griffin could have been far better recognised. Why he never reached greater success after Bread mystifies me.
Also, this seems to me like a forerunner of a Ron Sexsmith - type song -- the construction of it, and the way that James Griffin' voice is not dissimilar to Ron's. That's just how I hear it anyway.
James melodies were always so different. They went into different direction. Maybe that is what grab my attention. A lot like Gordon Lightfoot. Different sounds and melodies I always gravitate towards those musicians.
I watched Bread perform March 17, 1972 and in the 80’s Black Tie. James Griffin was one of the best vocalists and writers. Great memories. RIP

james griffin and rob royer .FOR ALL WE KNOW .sang it on the original Antholigy bread album.

It's such a shame this brilliant singer didn't get the recognition that he deserved.

Beautiful song. James was a wonderful singer/songwriter/musician...very underrated. Passed away much too young. RIP.
What a great loss to Music when James Griffin left us! God Bless James RIP Thank's

Such a beautiful, heartfelt song. Jimmy Griffen was always my favorite.
I just can't get this song outta my head!
Haunting voice of a soft rock genius
James and his talent are missed. Great song.
Always loved his songs he wrote and his singing. The best song of his is "She knows she's the only one"
Should have been a # 1 hit !!!! Beautiful song....
Even though I'm 17 & I'm not from that era I love this sort of music
A brilliant artist with soothing vocals, such easy agility with his high notes! What a beautiful legacy James Griffin left us in his music!
This guy was Awesome

What a voice...gone too soon!!
Oi legal também conheço esse cantor kk n é da minha época pois tenho 23 anos

This is the best version by far
Awesome version of this song. I wish they'd release anything left that's unreleased.
luv this song when I first heard it. soooo so emotional...made me cry.. Rest in peace James Griffin. Thanks for ur music.
the man who started bread bless him
sorry that was me
What a voice and what a song writer and people think it was David Gates who made the Bread I wish to differ
...I only knew of the Ray Charles and Richard Manuel versions of this tune. Nice to hear the authors take.

This song would have fit perfectly on a Bread album.

He did indeed have it all.
Great ballad. Almost David Gates like in its intimate, tender creation. Suberb chord changes.

Agreed, and incidentally, the record label name is Elektra. 🙂
wonderful
Such a better version with the sitar over percussion and rip to the legend!
Essa voz brilhou na Banda Bread...
