  • The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller has had an issue with its D-Pad since it released last year. The D-Pad appears to hit other direction inputs during fast movement between different directions in game. It is most noticeable in games like Tetris and platforming games like Mega Man. Today we're checking out a popular method to fix the input issue and see if it actually works.

      Switch is an overpriced cash grab. The build quality on everything is downgraded yet all the prices have gone up. Not to mention the "switch tax", port pricing & (overpriced) accessory necessity. Wii U was legit.

    Nintendo literally INVENTED the dpad and even had a patent on it for a while, why was this even a problem in the first place, especially for 70$!

      It's probably because Nintendo wanted to get the system out asap after the failure of the WiiU. So they didn't stress test it enough, but it seems they can't be bothered to fix the current issues. That's my guess

    • @julianx2rl
      @julianx2rl 3 роки тому +10

      This is just a guess, but I think its because they actually wanted the controller to be able to press all 4 directions at once, so they took out the center bump.
      This is a terrible idea that led to the d-pad having this issue, but because of the way they designed the left joycon, some braindead game might ask the player to press all 4 buttons at once, and because the Pro-Controller should* be compatible with most if not all games, if an input is possible in one controller, it should be possible in the other as well.
      Again, that is stupid, but so is this issue, so that's my guess...

    Beware of not putting tape on the center (pivot) part. I tried that in an attempt to elevate the d-pad, thinking that it would be a little stiffer and more precise, but my experiment didn't work since the angle at which the connecting membrane hit the board was then to high and it didn't even register most of the presses.

    • @m4ki9h76
      @m4ki9h76 6 років тому

      Xnerdz / some says that a electrical tape+a normal tape on center point will work better since two has different thickness.

    • @Xnerdz1
      @Xnerdz1 6 років тому +1

      I personally spent an entire evening trying half a dozen of tapes, even some combinations (various thickness) and it was either too thick (so thick that the d-pad couldn't move in the case anymore) or too thin (completely ineffective in changing the feeling). The closest middle-ground I found didn't even work because as I said, while _it did_ feel a little stiffer, and _it did_ move freely in the case, the d-pad did not register all the presses anymore, unless I pressed super hard on it. So I really can't recommend this mod, having suffered through it fruitlessly... But feel free to try it yourself if you've got the patience. Mine is back to normal and I'm getting used the the vanilla d-pad feeling.

If your experiment HAD worked, it could've helped out a lot of people :) But even though it didn't, now we know there isn't really a way to elevate the pivot point with tape.

    The Wii U gamepad controller did the same thing. It happened all of the time, I'd be running past a vine or a door, and without trying to, I'd be going up a vine or going through a door. It messed up a lot of my runs through Super Mario Maker. (I guess it was more of an UP problem than anything, as I don't remember a lot of unintentional DOWNs)

    Oh, man. I am so late to this. haha. I just finished Celeste, all of the B-Sides and C-sides as well, and I had so many issues with accidentally dashing at angles when I was trying to dash straight (up, down, left, or right). On the B-Sides and C-Sides, especially, it became infuriating after long crazy routes, I would die because of an accidental input like that.
    Thank you for looking into this and even sharing a simple mod. I just fixed two Gamecube controllers for a friend recently, so I was hoping I didn't have to do too much with my Xenoblade Pro Controller. But thanks to your video, this sounds super-easy and something I can do on a short break. Thanks, man!

    Got a Xenoblade Pro controller with the game last year and trying to play Tiger Tiger with the dpad normally was a nightmare. I ended up taping a bit more than you did The contacts have notches around the midways point on the sides. I taped up to, but not over, those notches and my problems went away.
    These days I use a Brook X One adapter to play with Xbox Elite controller, but at least I can now use the Pro Controller's dpad if I have to. Been meaning to get one of the joycon cover replacements that give you a dpad, but I'm still holding out hope for a more ergonomic set of joycons meant exclusively for attached portable mode to come out.

    Thanks. I plan on fixing my Pro Controller tomorrow. I have this video saved just in case.
    Edit: Geez, you made this look too easy. I tried doing it myself and it took me four hours, constantly putting on the shells and off trying to fix the Control Pad. Four hours later, and the Control Pad isn't fixed, my shoulder buttons aren't working anymore, and I'm fed up. I can't say I enjoyed my experience and it definitely wasn't worth it. I guess I'm not good at stuff like this. I'll recycle this and take my chance by buying a new one.

    I gotta say that the d-pad problem isn't unique to Nintendo or this generation. From what I've noticed, it started to become a problem ever since the focus of movement has went to analog sticks. The same problem can replicated on the PS4 d-pad by pressing down on a direction and kinda wiggling it back and forth. I've been trying to find a comprehensive solution to this but the mod only helped a little. Any suggestions?

    0:50 That seems to happen to me with up/down. It’s gotten me killed in the X Collection 2 by crushers that you’d have to dodge by ducking. While ducking, it might register right, which sometimes mean crushing.

    If you don't want to be able to press all four points at once, surely you could stick in a small bit of plastic (or some such) in the centre to act as a pivot point?

    In all honesty, the D-pad should be perfect if i'm paying the full price of the controller.
    IF it was as good as the 8bitdo one then I would of purchased one a LONG time ago.

    Noticed this issue at launch when trying to swap weapons in BotW; using the D-pad sometime led to incorrect input, so the wrong gear would display. Not a huge deal, since it corrects when your finger pressure is adjusted, but the issue is there.

    I am curious if this problem occoured on other D-Pads (e.g. DS, Wii, etc.).
    I feel like this is pretty bad quality control since nintendo should stress test their products and should find those problems by themselves. They charge more than microsoft or sony for their controller and the customer shouldn't have to take their device apart in order to get it to work properly.

    I did this with my original pro controller. Did nearly half of each points, plus I raised the d pads pivot by folding a small piece of tape twice. The controller works near perfect now (sporadic up registers still when trying to do certain moves that involve right on the dpad for fighting games, but other 2D games are perfect)

    For me this helped reduce the times the incorrect output happens but does not completely solve it as if it still does it when pressing the left part of the dpad rapidly (but this is if i press really fast which i will probably rarely do in actual gaming)

  • @aortaplatinum

    I don't know how common this is in modern controllers, but as a retro enthusiast who gets a lot of decades old controllers that I have to open up and clean before using, having the board and components and everything just sit comfortably in the bottom half of the controller like that, AND the plate holding the buttons into the top half, is a GODSEND. I didn't think I'd have the confidence to do this simple mod before seeing this, but now it's definitely something I'll take on.
    Now if only there was a way to make the dpad more clicky, like the Joy Con buttons or the DS family's dpads. Is that all to do with the strength, thickness, and recoil of the rubber membrane, or is it something else?

    I followed the instructions plus other online sources that explained the tape method. i aimed for between 1/2 and 1/3 on the tape coverage. and hmmm. the problem isn't 100% fixed. it still registers an up button press, if you press on the left button while rolling it upwards. perhaps it's better?? now that its taped rather than its original factory setting, who knows.
