Paul Anthony Romero is, in my opinion, deserves to be celebrated among such legends as Nobuo Uematsu and Jeremy Soul as one of the most influential video game composers of all time. It's hard to overstate just how popular HoM&M series was (and, to some extent, still is) here in Eastern Europe. And yes, it was what jump-started my musical taste as a kid, as well as many others, I'm sure. Romero consistently composed for the franchise since the 90's, elevating even otherwise mediocre installments with his music. Despite that, he remains largely underrated, but is to this day very interactive with the community. So don't be surprised to find his comment of appreciation under one of your videos if you keep reacting to his music)
I feel like the HOMM series of musical pieces gave me a bit of "oh classical music can be cool". Considering this is what my my dad basically only listened to, I'm very grateful that there exists pieces of music such as this during my formative years that helped give me a desire to broaden my horizons in music of all genres.
Paul specifically said that he was inspired by Baroque period for game 1, then Romantic for games 2 and 3. Then they had to copiously use an awesome but... kinda overused at the time Celtic sample library for 4 bc they didn't have much time, plus some original stuff like the town themes (and lots of sax bc Paul happens to be married (?) to one so that was convenient). And I don't know the influences in 5 but it sounded epic and grand as hell.
I think you'd love the Nature Theme from Heroes of Might and Magic IV! It's an opera duet and it's such a joy to listen to, easily my favourite track in the entire series.
What I always loved old HoMM OSTs for is that they did whatever the heck they wanted, cared for no conventions, yet still sound classier and more memorable than the better ones of modern highly themed and polished music.
The song was the first time ever I heard vocals in a computer game. Sure, Warcraft II was the first to use redbook audio but HoMM II music was just enchanting and awe inspiring on a different level.
So, Heroes of Might and Magic 2 like many early 90s CD games with redbook audio had two sountracks. The Redbook Audio off the CD, and midi music for people who didn't have the special cable that was required to hear CD Audio through your sound card, or who didn't want it for whatever reason. During this time the most popular synthesizer for Midi music tracks was the Roland SC-55, with some composers using the newer SC-55mk2. This is probably the source for the music in this.
Oh my god, I haven’t heard this theme in a LOOOONG time! It was one of my Dad’s favourite games that I would always watch him play back then! I’m so glad you’re reviewing this because it brought back some really good memories!
Oh my god, yes! HoMM is one of my favorite series of all time, and 3 and 4 have some of my favorite soundtracks ever You should _definitely_ check out Preserve, Life and Chaos town themes from the 4th game. I personally don't like Life's, but something tells me you'll enjoy that the most. And the reason I'm bringing them up is because they are really operatic
My whole family played this game. A LOT. Oh, the nostalgia! One of us also used to be an opera singer, so the love was already very strong. It's good to see some appreciation for old stuff like this. Cheers!
I remember receiving this game for my 7th Christmas, after watching a review on the tv. Alas, the game was never translated in my language, therefore I was pretty frustrated with it (and my lack of english knowledge). But the scores kept with me, especially the grass field theme which to this day makes me tears up. Thank you Paul Anthony Romero.
You asked how many people cold this music turn into classical music fans. Well, growing up I've never seen this game, I was born on the year it came out. But I've been 4 when my father brought home a cd with it's sequel, HoMM III, which had whole orchestra pieces as it's soundtrack. Me, a 4 year old at a time, would turn on the game just to sit and listen to it's music for hours at a time when my parents were not home. That's how powerful this series' music is. I really hope to see you review more of tracks from this franchise, since, despite wavering quality of the games themselves over time, the music stayed breathtaking.
the HOMM music converted me into a classical music fan :) and btw she's singing in German: the fools talk with their hearts, it is no god it is no god. Think official lyrics were different but she's clearly understandable
Something about classic game osts is just special. Even though I wasnt around for this game I still get transported back and to my early days of gaming on the ps2. Even then it transports me to a time before which is literally is from before lol
Probably my favourite theme in the game. The warlock theme is great too. The opera singer was really young too when she sang this if i remember correctly.
I was 3 years old when this game came out...and its the very first computer game I've ever played. I would spend a lot of time in towns in the game because I could not bring myself to interrupt the songs once they started. Its kind of surreal to me that you would cover this but a pleasant suprise.
Just today I discovered your channel and binged on it lol! And oh my HoMM series really brings out the nostalgia! My fav themes are from HoMM3 - Tower, and Necropolis, give them a try!
For another great vocal piece, I recommend both the Heroes of Might and Magic IV and V Haven Theme. 4 has a male singer and calmer, 5 a female singer and more dramatic :)
Before I watch the full video I bet someone getting exposed to any of the HoMM2/3/4 art(be it graphics or music) will have to admit there is certain degree of quality to all of it and it has a certain timeless feel.
This was my favorite game since middle school I would play it and stagiest against the PC or my friends. My favorite town theme is the Barbarians Town can you do reacts to all the other HOM&M2 Towns?
haha, wow. Playing Heroes of Might and Magic 3 with my dad was one of my big introductions to video games as a whole, what a blast to the past this was
This is probably my favorite music out of any Homm game ever. And to be fair, I am biased towards Homm2 but still. I was listening to the song and then I saw this video, which surprised me alot cuz I didn't think that Marco would've heard it too. And also to your statement in the beginning, no I was not born then, but boy oh boy do I know the music (and gameplay) of Might and Magic 2
I dont' know why, but even if this music is very joyfull, it makes me remember Castlevania Simphony of the Night. Particullary in Castlevania I loved Requiem for the gods soundtrack. Anyway. very very good video, as always Marco. Regards.
Hi. I love this music. It's not celtic. It's german, but I didn't understand much. The good towns are bible texts and the evil towns Friedrich Nietzsche.
Great vid as always! I am sure you already get many requests for reactions, but could you please listen to the berserk raviente theme from monster hunter frontier? Its one of the greatest pieces of music my ears have ever heard.
Oh my! HOMM, ya old bones. If you want to listen/analyse more soundtrack of this game series, I highly suggest that you should listen to the 4th entry's soundtrack of this game genre. 4 has GODTIER soundtrack
Paul Anthony Romero another composer Inon Zur and Michael Hoenig and more. 90s Games and their music was amazing thanks to developers, artists, composers.
Reading the comment section I get the impression you should just do one Town theme and maybe one overworld/combat theme from each of the mainline TBS Heroes games. I'm sure people will recommend Haven from Heroes 5, but Sylvan would be my choice from that game.
i much prefer the expansion pack's version of Sorceress. It's an unpopular opinion but I wasn't a fan of original HoMM2 Sorceress. But Expansion Sorceress is amazing. Please note that there are two versions of the town soundtracks: the original HomM2 and its Expansion, the Price of Loyalty. I found the expansion music to be better to my tastes.
YOu want some REALLY good music from an old game (not singing though) but Majesty the Fantasy Kingdom Sim is one of my favorite games of all time (not the sequels tho, forget about those)
Are you ever planning listen to the Heroes 2 Barbarian town theme from the original game? The expansion changed the OST so it's double the song goodness.
Oh oh oh, if you gonna give Heroes 5 themes a go - PLEASE pick the "town animatic" videos! They showcase a view of that faction's town as well as the music. (No sound effects tho which I kinda miss whenever I rewatch them. But you're here for the music.)
Sorry really late to this but came up on my feed. HOMM series of games have amazing soundtrack. I personally like HOMM4 OST the best, followed by HOMM3. What makes HOMM2 music unique is that because of technology at the time, the soundtrack was a mix of midi (or something like it), plus an optional 'opera' setting - no joke. There is an audio option with no music, music with no opera, and music with opera. Presumably the opera option required the game CD to be in the PC and is sampled pretty much like a CD audio track. I have not come across any other game that gives you a choice of music (beyond on and off) like HOMM2. Also, I played the HOMM2 demo map for hundreds of hours (before I was old enough to buy my own games, by which time HOMM3 came out) and the demo did not have Opera but used different midi files for town themes. I clearly remember the Warlock town theme being a midi version of some JS Bach (Gavotte from some suite or other)
This one is super memorable, and probably the most well known. However, the one from HOMM2 that put me on an actual quest was the Knight town music ua-cam.com/video/GzuCcyl6cfo/v-deo.html It has words in German, I had to look them up, very mysterious and even weird I would say. The singing insert in that one is out of this world.
The Price of Loyalty Expansion pack themes for all the castles had amazing opera soundtracks and Barbarian is definitely one of my favorites Edit: oh wait you were talking about Barbarian theme from homm1, my bad
I know you already did astalgia of phantasm, but I think it would be sick if you did a followup on that and watched the live performance or maybe something else from the lost ark concert :)
Hey Marco, I just found your channel but I’ve been thoroughly enjoying your reactions to Hollow Knight and Souls music, is there any chance you could add Lothric and Lorians OST, The Twin Princes, from DS3 to your list? Seeing what you interpret just from listening to the soundtracks is incredible, and the Twin Princes is a very emotionally resonant piece for me. Would love your perspective on it some time.
OMG do not play with our hearts by analysis the HOMM franchise music...still love it though uncovering relatively unknown soundtracks (those of HommV are my favourites)
