  • Anyone But You, the new hit Rom-Com starring Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeny and Top Gun’s Glen Powell has had a pretty wild ride. Initially hit with waves of not-so-behind-the-scenes scandals, the early press for the film was then slowed by the SAG-AFTRA strike and some pretty negative audience responses to a leaked trailer. The general vibe going into the film’s release was that it was sure to be a flop, but then it became a surprise mega-hit at the box office. So what was really going on with all of that so-called drama, and more importantly, how did the film manage to have such a huge comeback? Let’s take a look at the scandal, the movie itself, and the real reason it’s managed to capture audiences’ hearts.

It’s important that this movie did well. Now more directors won’t be afraid to do more cheesy rom coms. Not everything needs to be Oscar worthy. Sometimes we need comfort films.

@@AntonioGee, they really should’ve casted a comedian actress for the role. Like she can be beautiful, but at least have her be funny. Like Samara Weaving who’s done a few comedies, but does have good comedic timing. Or Chloe Finnerman, who is an SNL actress who does give a few laughs. Both are quite beautiful too so that you can work with this.

Thank you! If it doesn't have any of the formula then is it really a rom com?! It either follows the direct formula or it goes slightly different pretending to be unique aka not like the other rom coms rom com, like in that one movie with the one Harry potter actor. In my book those 2 are the only real rom coms, and plain romantic movies are different like titanic.

Much Ado is by far my favorite play and I thought this was, overall, a really cleverly plotted adaptation with a cast that was so much fun to watch. My friend saw it with me and, not knowing the play, was amused by all my giggling at he Easter eggs.
I hope that romcoms are on their way to getting the love they deserve. My Bridgerton hyperfixation led me to finally reading Pride and Prejudice. I have made countless friends over shared love of a romcom, be that Shakespeare and Austen or Shonda Rhimes/Julia Quinn and Rob Reiner. Romcoms make us feel connected and optimistic and even if that optimism is foolish, I suspect it’s better for us than the alternative.
