- You know, a lot has changed over the four decades that the Toyota 4Runner has been backwoods exploring and pavement prowling. Most notably, the rise of car-based crossover utilities and the word “softroader” somehow becoming a thing. Well, the 4Runner is still all truck and definitely not soft, but you don’t have to be an off-road pro to enjoy it!
With a new 4Runner on the horizon, we put the final year of the 5th-gen to the test!

Bless John Davis for being a legendary icon for MotorWeek.
He looks more spry now than he did 20 years ago.
My friend bought one, and said he would die with this truck. Very fun
15 years ,plus the 4th Gen 4Runner before it, which is basically the same vehicle under the sheetmetal. Amazing LC Prado platform!
What is amazing about it? All they did was keep making the same car forever.
@@MercOne check the resale. They are bulletproof and cheap to fix. And if you are into off-roading, they are pretty capable.
@@jonas000111 Yeah we know. There is nothing amazing about any of that. It’s just old.
@@MercOne
@@user-vx7vi3vq1cNah just not dimwitted enough to think that just because something is old that’s it’s great. Why not stick to the merits of the vehicle? Oh that’s right, you can’t.
one last ride for the 5th gen. and it is good looking. i guarantee it
I picked up a 24 TRD Off Road Premium back in February. With what Toyota has done with the GX, Tacoma, Sequoia, and Tundra, I knew they were going to ruin the 4Runner too. Sure enough, I was right once they revealed the 6th gen in April. My 5th gen will easily reach 400k miles and last 20+ years, meanwhile all the other vehicles above will barely make it to 200k without a major turbo, hybrid battery, or engine replacement. RIP reliable, long lasting, dependable Toyotas.
200k? They would be lucky to get 100k. This is a brand new drivetrain about a year old with the tacoma. You're basically their beta tester at this point. I am in the market for a 5th gen SR5 or up 4runner. You got a great SUV
I did the exact same thing in February, ‘24 ORP w/ kdss, and we love it. Our reasoning was just as you said, and very well put.
I bought my Barcelona red 40th anniversary edition 14 months ago and very glad I did. This is a great vehicle and I am proud to show it off at my local car cruises. I meticulously maintain (and annual rustproof) this and I told the salesman I plan to keep this at least 20 years.
Good move, the biggest issue with it is the cost to own, due to terrible mpg
I have a '23 Offroad Premium myself. I love it, it's the sweet spot in the trim lineup, many thousands cheaper than the too-pricy Pro. That said, I'm not inherently afraid of the upcoming model. I wouldn't buy one the first model year, but I doubt I'll be saying "those turbos are going to ruin your life!" in 2028.
I have a. 2024 TRD Off Road Premium. Fantastic daily driver. 7.7 sec 0-60 is actually pretty good. Throttle response improves with the use of a Pedal Commander. I added the TRD Pro intake and exhaust. Sounds great. Old School for sure. I get about 17.5 MPG in all around driving. Not too bad as far as I am concerned. Super reliable. In response to a comment below, I am 5'11", I have plenty of headroom. Seats are comfortable. Tons of room for Gear in the back. Headed to NC in a few weeks to camp and section hike part of the AT. Super steep climbing out of the Nantahala Gorge no matter if going north or south.
This generation of 4Runner about 20 years later will looks more nice.
Scoop these up now if you really want it.
This week I bought a 2024 TRD Off-Road Premium in Solar Octane. I waited to see what the new model would be like......then got my hands on the current one before it was too late.
I love my 2020 4Runner. Even more after the Magnuson supercharger was installed
I actually waited to see what the 6th gen had to offer....I am now the proud owner of a Terra TRD Pro
I have a 2019 and absolutely love it. No way I'd "upgrade" to a turbo 4cyl.
It's now or never. RIP Toyota, Reability, dependability and afortability.
This 4Runner been around nearly as long as John Davis 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
Run to buy this 2024, these are built to last a lifetime. Naturally aspirated engines are far better than Turbo engines.
The NEW 2025 model yet to be proven to be reliable with that Turbo engine. Historically, Turbo engines produces more heat and wears down the engines quicker.
That doesn’t prove anything about long term reliability.
Turbos might be new to the US market, but not the rest of the developed world. Your logic reminds me of people who complained about full synthetic motor oil.
@@theforgottenorgTurbos are not new to our market. It’s just that the Toyota reliability zombies have been preaching about how other brands sucked because of turbos and their reliability. Now they’re having to eat those words and it’s giving them indigestion.
@@theforgottenorgturbo gasoline/petrol cars are almost always less reliable long term than NA motors. Turbo diesels are a whole other world and highly reliable...until emissions changed that. You might be from a country with higher octane gas as well. For many parts of the US, 91 octane is about the max. Not great for turbo cars
@@myplaxismodelisbetterthanyours thats also noy true. O2 sensors adjust fuel mapping for 87. The bad rep for turbos comes from:
1 turbo lag
2 hotter climates in the US for Northerm Eurppean cars
3 ricers and aftermarket tuners
I was going to buy one of these then I drove a 2024 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and fell in love! The Jeeps 8-speed is glorious!
John Davis on a 5th Gen 4Runner... this is peak MotorWeek!
Why this looks like a 1999 video? LOL
Had a 2016. It always tended to drift on the interstate. But it was a fun ride with terrible gas mileage.
The Toyota 4runner Is The Only Suv To Use A Power Sliding Rearview Window When Others Suv's Are Going With Pop-up Rearview Windows
The old Chevy blazers used to have them.
@Policearegood-mt6kx Yes The Old Chevrolet Blazer Had Them And The Old Ford Bronco Had Them Too But The Ford Bronco 2 Had Pop-Up Rearview Window But You Had To Swing The Spare Tire Carrier Back Open With Your Key And Open The Rearview Window The Chevrolet s10 Blazer You Had To Turn Knob And Open The Rearview Window
Or even deleting any kind of window at all. But at least a pop out glass is better than nothing, tho, though yeah, rolling down window is the best kind.
Toyota messed up with the new 4runner. I would not even consider buying the new 4runner.
Selling my 2018 Trd Pro Cavalry Blue only 32.000 on it also 5yrs 100.000 warranty. Its in a excellent condition
22 model years with this engine. 20 model years with this transmission. Thirsty, flawed by 2024 standards, but boy is this drivetrain dependable. It just works. I personally know of a 2014 4Runner with 360k miles on it. These will outlive us. They have even less design flaws than prior generations.
It's like a brand new Retro Review
Totally badass - just lacks a manual transmission for me to be interested. I’d go Tacoma to get the stick or bronco to get both suv and manual transmission.
Wow) It's like a brand new Retro Review)
Got the 4Runner and 24 Camry XSE V6 but I will get the 6th gen regardless of the turbo 4.
I bought a 2024 4Runner off road. It’s my first ever Toyota and a decent vehicle. It’s decent off road. I have generally enjoyed the car and only have two complaints. First, the stock tires are terrible for off road use and need to be replaced almost immediately. Second, the brakes on this car are not good, they do not modulate well and it’s easy to get the car into a modestly uncontrolled skid.
It looks like the color of the water that comes out of fire hydrants when they flush them out.
Do you know what Terra means 🤡
I this 15 year old engine design still managing a 7.7 0-60 w 270 hp is very good.
Very good compared to what? 4 liters to make 270hp? Nearly 8 secs to 60. It’s laughably outdated.
It is a low compression/relatively unstressed engine that has been continuously improved for decades. Provides reliable off road power and will run forever.
@@MercOneAnd that’s why it will last 400,000 miles.
@@user-vx7vi3vq1cSounds miserable to drive something this crappy that long. Outright suffering. What type of person looks forward to driving an already 15 year old vehicle long enough to accumulate 400K miles? Sounds dismal.
@@boughtandpaidforautoreview1150
Why are you here? No Jeep here. Try again. What a sad thing to say. Can’t defend the product do you wish misfortune on someone who just criticizes a car of all things.
Yep this is the last of the everlasting 4Runner.
Please give me the Limited in blue or similar color.
One Last Pro Deo
If i had the money i would buy 5
I'm eagerly awaiting the bad news that comes in about the 6th gen design flaws
The only thing I hope that will change for the better, that has been the same for 30+ years, in the next Gen 4Runner is 16MPG.
The new Tacoma doesn’t get any better mpg than the previous gen, so I wouldn’t expect this to either.
That audio narration sounded like an AI clone of John Davis, not the real guy.
One thing that has never changed... They still get crappy gas mileage.
“Last 4Runner?” What next?
On the most recent show that featured the 2024 Toyota forerunner there’s some profile of some chick and all about her dogs. You know what? I don’t watch MotorWeek to learn about somebody’s dogs and or about their medical history. just talk about cars.
Most likely this would be my last Toyota 4x4. Not interested in new powertrains Toyota choose according to EPA / Government needs.
New one? Nope. No unreliable turbo motor. Way too expensive.
4-cylinders? This is becoming embarrassing, even for lowly Toyota.
Complaints should go to ur government and all the bs new regulations.
That 4 cylinder has like 340 hp and over 450 lbs/tq
@@cshader2488yeah but it’s still a 4 cylinder. Nobody ever sits around and tells stores about the awesome sounding, powerful 4 cylinder engine they once had.
@@Policearegood-mt6kx I’ll admit I miss my Gen4’s V8 but I’d rather have the increased power and MPG any day.
Historically inline 4’s were what 4Runners came with. The NA and Turbo 2.4 in the mid 80 ‘s is legendary.
amazing how dated these look now
Looks old already. Should have been changed about 7 years ago lol
Gas guzzlers.
Good God……am I the only one really annoyed with Jonathan’s voiceovers? I used to like him but it’s just unbearable now. I might be in the minority 🤷🏻♂️ If you think I’m wrong just watch an intro by him and compare it to another automotive journalist’s voiceover intro! Like I said….I’m probably the a$$hole…..but I’ll stick with my assertions that Davis is intolerable at best. Who the f@!? actually talks like that?!?!
Too expensive. Ugly. Gas hog. Uncomfortable seats. Cramped headroom. It's a good thing they're reliable because that's all they have going for them.
People love to buy them for their off road capabilities then take them off road exactly 0 times.
Sounds like you’ve never owned one. I have a ‘23 4R TRD Pro and it’s very comfortable, including the seats. And it’s one of the best looking SUV’s on the road.
You can’t say that here. Pretty out of it group who fancy these things. It drives like shit and has horrible packaging like you say but long it’s reliable it could be a horse a buggy to them.
Toyota & Hyundai are too much alike for my taste. Looks cheap as hell.
With all the new vehicles out there and you waste an entire segment on a 15 year old vehicle that hasn't changed in the last 10 years. MotorWeek needs a rethink. This was a total waste of time, especially when you're really slow at testing new cars and test nothing but one boring vehicle after another.
Cause your option counts.
@@ericklein6175What
Try again.
Just ur opinion. Go get a Gwagon that doesn't even have a touchscreen yet this "old and outdated" 4runner did for a while now
@@normanli7085If you think a touch screen gives it an edge over a G then you guys are a lot dimmer than I thought. The G still has a better infotainment without it AND the 2025 G has a touch screen. Try again. You said “option” in your first post. Maybe you need a touch screen when you post.
A exceptional vehicle that will be remembered and missed🫡 “Tried, True, and capable….gets the job done.”
Many a kid has been hauled to school and practice in these.
Poor kids…they’re totally missing out on the minivan experience!! Go off-road or stay home!!
Im gonna miss you 2GR-Fe 🥲🥲🥲
It uses the 1GR.
