Hail Columbia! with Lyrics; First American National Anthem - United States of America

- After the French Revolution, conflict arose between France and England, and American relations with both countries became strained, because American leaders differed in their sympathies with these nations. As a result, France and the United States were on the verge of war in the spring of 1798. To try to unify the Nation, Joseph Hopkinson (son of Francis Hopkinson, composer and signer of the Declaration of Independence) wrote the words of Hail, Columbia! and set them to the tone of The President's March, said to have been composed by Philip Phile as Washington's inaugural march. The new song called for all Americans to support George Washington, who had been recalled from retirement by President John Adams to resume his position as Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy. The song did help to unify the Nation and avert war; and it was long regarded in Europe as our National Anthem.
-From the Album Cover
Hail Columbia, happy land!
Hail, ye heroes, heav'n-born band,
Who fought and bled in freedom's cause,
Who fought and bled in freedom's cause,
And when the storm of war was gone
Enjoy'd the peace your valor won.
Let independence be our boast,
Ever mindful what it cost;
Ever grateful for the prize,
Let its altar reach the skies.
Chorus
Firm, united let us be,
Rallying round our liberty,
As a band of brothers joined,
Peace and safety we shall find.
Sound, sound the trump of fame,
Let Washington's great name
Ring through the world with loud applause,
Ring through the world with loud applause,
Let ev'ry clime to freedom dear,
Listen with a joyful ear,
With equal skill, with God-like pow'r
He governs in the fearful hour
Of horrid war, or guides with ease
The happier time of honest peace.
Chorus
Firm, united let us be,
Rallying round our liberty,
As a band of brothers joined,
Peace and safety we shall find.
Let Washington's great name
Ring through the world with loud applause,
Yes.

Can we all take a moment and appreciate the SPECTACULAR voice of that amazing tenor! 1:39-1:49 was powerful!
Yes yes we can!!!
YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT IT WAS BEAUTIFUL
It's the British people singing
@@captenblackbeard1484 You're on the wrong side of the pond.
I find personal joy in seeing other people here in the UA-cam comments finding this anthem much more suitable. It would be best if we had this as our national anthem again. This is much more authentic and relative to what the United States stands for. The melody is more upbeat and gives off the vibe of patriotism and love for our country. It's a beautiful melody.
hail columbia, happy land, if we don't burn you I'll be damned!!!!
We could sing it at public events but we’re too busy inventing national anthems for a new fiat of segregation.
Why did we change the national anthem anyway? This was perfectly fine.
You…………………………………………………………………….
***** How do we keep finding one another?
Apparently the Internet is smaller than we thought...
No idea I agree with you though :D
Servus & Danz There's no country in South America called Columbia. There is a country in South America called the Republic of Colombia.
***** It isn't catchy like the star spangled banner.
During the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln played only this original (Northern) anthem called 'Hail Columbia.' Not 'Star Spangled Banner' as American present anthem since 1930s.
90% of comments is about bringing this back
Cuz they should
As we should only patriotism can crush drugs and alcoholism
BRING IT BACK
Even if we can't bring it back fully, we should at least put some of the lyrics in our current national anthem into this one. Sure, it would be tricky, but the best lines of both combined would be wonderful and inspiring......besides, I can't stand that our modern one is to the tune of an old British drinking song.
SO??
I wish this was sung more often at patriotic events. I like it!
Me Too
Missing verse:
Immortal patriots, rise once more,
Defend your rights, defend your shore!
Let no rude foe with impious hand,
Let no rude foe with impious hand,
Invade the shrine where sacred lies
Of toil and blood, the well-earned prize!
While off'ring peace, sincere and just,
In heaven's we place a manly trust
That truth and justice will prevail,
And every scheme of bondage fail!
Chorus
Firm, united let us be,
Rallying round our liberty,
As a band of brothers joined,
Peace and safety we shall find.
They may used only the first and last verse.
Good anti-immigrant verse :D
Komotau4691 it’s anti-invader not anti-immigrant. There’s a difference.
@John T Against mainstream policy and there is part "defend your shore" so nobody cant reach on US shore :D
@@Komotau4691 "Defend your shore" means defend your shore, not ban immigrants. It is not anti immigrant in any way, they had just gotten done DEFENDING OUR SHORE from the British army and many people in the country were themselves immigrants. Hope this clears things up! Have a great day!
This is a rousing piece of music. Thanks for posting.
You are welcome.
Because the national anthem is shorter simpler and actually has a competitive structure to it which gives it such a victorious sound
Rousing? That's the word you chose? Douche
As a Russian, i find this song very beautiful and epic
thanks for clarifying the as a Russian part! important!
As an American I am so Pround of this is what my ancestors fought for English Scots And Irish and for our nation is the future
I like this anthem more.
"As a band OF BROTHERS JOIN, peace and safety we shall find..."
Way more powerful than "Land of the free and home of the brave." In my opinion.
I personally always prefer the more boastful and upbeat anthems rather than somber ones.
I like serious anthems. But I love this compared to the star spangled banner. It really captures the beauty of America, or should I more properly say, "Columbia". But the star spangled banner isn't even that serious. It's just really plain.
@Farhan Ahmed Canada changed their anthem last year for inclusiveness, so we could do the same here
@Meholz Freedom I thought the “brothers” were the 13 original states
I think land of the free and home of the brave encapsulates America’s essence best
@@gstarr3355 seems kinda generic, could be said for any country.. 'hail columbia' on the other hand perfectly captures the new world utopia idea
this sounds much more like an actual national anthem!
it's funny, when ever i watch the olympics, the other country's anthems sound so big and bold and epic just like this song, compared to the star spangled banner.
rockerseven yes but doesn’t that give a certain humbleness and uniqueness to ours
It really depends on how you play it. I’ve heard performances that make it so loud and others make it sound so weak
It's because you haven't heard the Tabernacle choir version
You were dropped as a child I assume
andi richards It’s not only a waltz, its tune comes from a British drinking song. Hail Columbia or The Stars and Stripes Forever would be much better for our national anthem.
I like this anthem more than the current one.
2:28 - 2:59 This is why we should bring this anthem back (just change Columbia to America). So good!
why change Columbia to America, they are literally the same thing
+LazyTroodon I was mostly joking since I don't believe in changing the lyrics of other people's works. But since America is rarely referred to as Columbia anymore (even in a poetic sense) and there is a country of the same name (albeit different spelling) I wouldn't mind too much if the substitution of "America" for "Columbia" was made though I prefer the original.
+TheWindWaker333 I think America should be called Columbia though.
I think it might get confused with Colombia.
Do you know what an alias is?
To any American government official, please try to make this our National Anthem. Our current national anthem is like a 7 year old saying he's better than you. Hail Columbia tells about the struggle we faced and how we persevered to make us the country today. BRING IT BACK!
TheGamingMatrix126 I prefer Stars and Stripes forever
This anthem doesn't make sense anymore. We became everything in this song and became a colonizing terror.
Coffee Succubus , lmao. In the UK, our national anthem is God Save the Queen. No one likes her over here and people usually boo it. Our one is worse. Rule Britannia would be a better anthem
The Star Spangled Banner is better imho. This anthem is great, but Star Spangled Banner is about the hope and joy of the people watching the battle of Fort McHenry, and the flags constant flight symbolizing that America will always live on.
TheGamingMatrix126 America the beautiful is superior to both
Rename the USA "Columbia." Rename Colombia "Granada."
+Hidolf Atler Then what do you rename Grenada?
Old Granada. :^)
***** And this American (American by birth, Colombian by blood) is proud that the US isn't a new version of Britain.
Michael frumento And I'm happy about that, the decline of the British Empire was the worst thing to happen in Geo-Politics.
Technically, "Columbia" is one of the original names for the USA, before it was known as the USA, and is the name for the female "mascot" of the US (Similar to what "Uncle Sam" is)
United States of Columbia sounds far better tbh.
But there's a country in South America called Colombia.
XiiCubed Eh fuck them, they can be West Venezuela or Santa Maria
***** How Ironic xd
***** -shrug- juts a thing that came off my head.
Would you prefer that or West Venezuela?
***** That sounds more ideal!
The chorus of this song is AMAZING. Much respect and friendship from a Canadian.
Schönes Arrangement! Da hat jemand aus dieser einfachen Melodie etwas durchaus Beeindruckendes gezaubert. Beste Grüße aus Deutschland!
Thank you from U.S. of A.
The composer of the melody ist German-American Pfilipp Pfeil (alias Philip File). The refrain melody reminds me of the German children's song: "Wie das Fähnchen auf dem Turme kann sich dreh'n bei Wind und Sturme, so soll sich mein Händchen dreh'n, daß es eine Lust ist anzusehen" (Like the little flag on the tower, which waves around in storm an wind, my little hand should shake along, that it is a joy to see).
Bernhard Wulle Danke, aus Amerika!
Hessian posting, huh?
This song is the ceremonial entrance march of the Vice President of the United States. It was the personal anthem for the U.S. president until it was replaced by the song "Hail to the Chief." When played in honor of the U.S. Vice President, the song is always preceded by four ruffles and flourishes. In addition, the song has been used as a slow march during military ceremonies, often while the band counter-marches.
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY! GOD BLESS AMERICA
This should be the national anthem
Magnificent! This is my favorite patriotic song and as noted in an earlier post it's passing beyond rare to find it with lyrics. Thank you for posting it.
Composed by German-American Philipp Pfeil (alias Philip Phile) and reminding me of a German children's song "Wie das Fähnchen auf dem Turme" ('The Little Tower Flag').
Why are American patriotic songs made into children's songs
Idk why but based
why the hell did it change this ones way better
Finally, an old anthem of a nation that doesn’t lie
Hail Columbia is currently used as the Theme song of the Vice President; while Hail to the Chief is the President of the United States theme song.
Once the Republic is restored, so shall this anthem
We could simply replace "Columbia" with "America" and it would still work.
I want our anthem back.......
Has anyone read Harry Turtledove’s Timeline-191 ? I can very easily see these lyrics holding great appeal in the North after the First Great War - and this song would be embraced as the USA’s official national anthem.
Who wants to petition this back as the national anthem
We need more recordings of hail columbia in the world! Come on high school choirs, college choirs, get at this song!
Heck, sing it at a republican national convention or something! anything! somewhere! Biden, sing along with it when its played for you!
Sing it at... a republican national convention? What kind of crack are you smoking?
Wow, funny how this turned out.
I learned "Columbia the Gem of the Ocean" in college concert choir, but sadly not this.
This aged like milk since bidens president now and he destoryed the american dream
IF I EVER GET ELECTED PRESIDENT ID SPECIFICALLY REQUEST THIS SONG BE SANG DURING MY INAUGURAL CEREMONY
This is way more epic than our current one. Washington, remember his name!
Why is this the first time I've heard this? Hail columbia! We must make this popular ago.
hail columbia, happy land, if we don't burn you I'll be damned!!!!
People who bring Trump into this must be a riot when singing Deck the Halls.

BRING IT BACK
Even if i’m italian i get chills. Gorgeous!
The Star Spangled Banner was based off some British drinking song and the lyrics hardly talk about the nation itself. Hail Columbia actually speaks of unity as a nation. And just listen to that chorus! The United States of Columbia sounds so much better in my opinion. Too bad the US founding fathers weren't really creative and decided to tack on the name of the entire continent to the country's name instead.
+jaranarm Naming the country after the continent helped a bit in justifying Manifest Destiny (colonizing it to the Pacific) I guess.
Its supposed to be about the flag not the nation and what it means to keep the flag standing and the inspiration it gives.
America was chosen as a name because its citizens were seen as representatives of the continents, and the citizens of other colonies that were under controlled by the British, French, and Spanish were seen as representatives of their European masters
To Anacreon in Heaven is the melody the Star Spangled Banner is set to.
A friend of mine justified our anthem. He said most countries' anthems are about how beautiful, powerful, or awesome their country is. Ours is like "you could beat us down all you want but we ain't giving up" which is kind of nice.
This song has always chokes me up, even more than the Star-Spangled Banner. Maybe because it speaks more to where we came from, and because it isn't butchered by everyone to has a notion to sing at a football game.
/fav'd
Yesterday was a good day.
Indeed, my fellow deplorable!
we need to bring it back.
Let's teach this song in our schools. The kids today need to know it.
Only one thing, they will forget almost everything from school in a short time.
We really should ditch the Star Spangled Banner in favor of this. Or if it's too long, at least the first half.
it's short compared to other countries. France's anthem is 5 minutes long!
+gtapolice1000 You don't want to sing a song that recites the 1st verse? How so?
rockerseven or we could use the song Stars and Stripes forever
+The Americans Gameing But Stars and Stripes Forever is nothing more than a song about the flag. People already take the flag and the anthem WAY too seriously lately (as is evident by people who get outraged that someone didn't stand or salute) and put it more important than literally everything else. We don't need a song doing nothing but glorifying a flag. Hail Columbia! honors the country itself.
+gtapolice1000 The Star Spangled Banner glorifies a war, and apparently in your mind, is nothing more than a taunt. Hail Columbia! honors peace, and reminds us that while it was war that got us here, never forget it so we never have to endure the horrors of war again.
And like Stars and Stripes Forever, for the most part the song is just about the flag. Hail Columbia! sings about what the US stands for (well, what the US is supposed to stand for). The only part that makes mention in the Star Spangled Banner is just the last lyric.
Now do you understand why or shall I explain more?
Who thought the Star Spangled Banner sounded better than this? That anthem always gets on my nerves whenever I hear it. Now this! This song is what they should have left the U.S anthem as.
I agree. Our current anthem is easy to sing and remember and is meant to start off modestly and end triumphantly. But this one is better musically.
They changed it in 1933 I think? Due to the Great Depression, which I find strange.
I prefer Stars and Stripes forever
People with ears. This is some bland shit. Soviets would have won the Cold War if this was our anthem.
@@Muhoshin Not really. Star Spangled Banner is pretty bland shit. As for whether the Soviets would have won, would have made no difference, since the Soviets were on their way to ending regardless of any input by the United States.
Thank you.
Columbia(s) coming to earth already in DEC 2021. They will bring us to the brightest star in the sky. It will be our future home in 2024.
This is beautiful! Why isn't this America's national anthem?? This is better than Star-Spangled Banner and its the anthem Washington himself heard.
Why the hell did we change our once perfectly fine anthem?
We did not, this was a proposed anthem. America never truly had a anthem until around the 1930s I believe.
I personally think we should come up with a new national anthem, fit for today. Epic as the Russians, not too hard to sing, and all around better and more fitting for a country like the U.S
***** The Star Spangled Banner was adopted in 1931, but it was written in 1814...about a battle from the War of 1812.
Anyway, I do like the Star Spangled Banner but it's so not too easy to sing. It's not often you see crowds singing it like the French sing theirs, more often you see some singer sing it in some fancied way.
But I'd be fine with our current anthem if maybe it wasn't so hard to sing or if people sang it as a crowd more-much more patriotic and fucking awesome!
+gtapolice1000 Really? No it doesn't. I personally like more serious anthems. But the Star Spangled banner is way too soft and plain. There is not much musical effort put into it. Where as this anthem expresses a lot of emotion. I personally think that we should change the lyrics up a little bit, and that would work. But an anthem as plain and as soft as The star spangled banner doesn't capture any emotion or feelings. Nor do I think can it send a message to our enemies. I think we need this melody with some lyrical changes to where it would be a little more serious.
Not fit for today. Today sucks, just a bunch of liberal snowflake millennials. No one is nationalistic any more. Sadly, no one has pride in their glorious nations.
I think the old South African Anthem in English “The song of South Africa” with South Africa changed to America could fit the United States Perfectly.
@@prussianmonarchist7110 ok boomer but i agree
Bring this Anthem back!
Here we have a song about America and our revolution. But our current national anthem is about the attack on Fort Mchenry. Why did we stop using this as our national anthem?! It’s even catchier than the Star Spangled Banner!
This song is so powerful.
wtf this is so good
Why this was not chosen as the National Anthem is a crime, at least it is the official Vice President's march.

:D
damn this is a rare sound to find
Star Spangled Banner, as beautiful a piece o' music as it is, got nothing on this. Why did we change it?!
You, I always wondered what tune could be used to make an American version of the 1812 Overture. Probably would have to be this.
we aren't even under the Star Spangled Banner which has 15 Stars and 15 Bars ad haven't been for almost 200 years. the third verse of it condones slavery. it is also the melody of a 1744 ENGLISH drinking song. this is why it is difficult to sing and is hilarious by those who are getting drunk. Hail Columbia! should be the National Anthem and not the SSB which has been mangled by "artists" as DRAFT DODGER TED NUGENT.
it damn well is and i'm a NAM VET.
i was Green Beret. go for the Rangers, the elite and the pay is great. Airborne, Drill Sergeant, Airborne. You get to wear Jump Boots at all times and others know You are Airborne. "i want to be an Airborne Ranger, i want to live a life of danger, i want to go to Viet Nam, i want to kill ol' Charlie Cong!" the recruiter will fill You full of bull shit. i also suggest OCS (Officer's Candidate School) for You. watch SSGT Barry Sadler's video on UA-cam. it went to #1 in 1965 December. if You had high school ROTC then you will begin as a PFC and will be chosen as a squad leader or even a platoon leader in Basic Training. If not, and i didn't, that's alright too. Do plenty of running and physical training now and You'll be prepared for the 15 mile marches with double time and the PT tests which included a 2 mile timed run. PT tests were done in t shirts, fatigue pants and boots. it will be early to rise and early to bed. Basic will be Your toughest part. Ranger School is tough but You'll be ready for it. Everyone, and i mean everyone, respects the Rangers above all. May You have the greatest success in whatever You choose.
The star spangled banner makes no reference to 15 stars or 15 bars. By the way, the stars and bars is a Confederate flag. We don't sing the third verse. Who cares about it being a drinking song?
the STAR SPANGLED BANNER IS THE FLAG OF !*!$ WHEN F S KEY WROTE HIS POEM! IT HAS 15 BARS AND 15 STARS YOU UNEDUCATED FOOL! KNOW INFORMATION BEFORE YOU RELY AND MAKE A FOOL OF YOURSELF!
You are not American. It's not the stars and bars, it's the Stars and Stripes.
I love this, it's way better than our national anthem
Columbia our Goddess
This should be the anthem.
I love the Star Spangled Banner, but I sure do wish they'd decided on this one instead. As much as I love hearing how we destroyed British warships, this one has a more patriotic ring to it.

Battle hymn of the republic would make a far better anthem tbh
Star-Spanged Banner is horrible. I wish we would have kept this...
The one we have was written during a battle by Francis Scott Key in 1814 during the war of 1812. It stands for that through any war our flag will stand and our country will not fall. This is a good song but the Star Spangled Banner means more. Also this was never declared the national anthem by congress
CRAZY GAMER Congress can suck it.
CRAZY GAMER
The lyrics for the Star Spangled Banner were by Key. The melody was adapted from a British song called "To Anacreon in Heaven" by John Strafford Smith. It was commonly sung as a drinking song.
RadioactivFly This is actually true. If you could sing it on-key, you weren't drunk enough yet ;)
MortimerTheMortified I prefer the Star Spangled Banner, and can see why perfectly.
It was adopted in 1931 because the Democrat governor of New York (future president FDR), who had began putting an end to the Great Depression, was heavily for it. "Hail Columbia" is about celebrating freedom, democracy, and our national existence. "The Star Spangled Banner", however, was (and is) about the US's ability to stay united and strong throughout times of trouble, crisis, and war. It was adopted in 1931 and fit perfectly, as the US was pulling itself out of the Great Depression with strength and pride, and the stage for WW2 was being set, and after WW2, it would've fit perfectly as a victory song, like the Soyuzhymne. I would like to see the national flag flying over Iwu Jima with The Star Spangled Banner playing in the background as much as the Red Banner flying over the Reichstag with the Soyuzhymne playing in the background.
Can we talk about that INTRO though YEAAHH
As "Hail To The Chief" honors the president, this song honors the vice president.
It was sung during the presidency of Washington, but it talks more about America and the revolution more than Washington.
Also popular even during the Civil War.
In the north that is.
After their "March to the Sea", Northern troops under Sherman made up new lyrics for this song as they approached South Carolina's capital.
"Hell Columbia, happy land!
If I don't burn you I'll be damned!"
Then, when they got there, they did exactly that.

Some of our founders were very, and I mean, very, racist. But does that fact make their creation of the Declaration of Independence, and of the United States Constitution, illegitimate? Does it make those documents less worthy? I say that is does not. They set us on a course. A course where all men and women will some day be able to make themselves into whatever they want. Not all will achieve their goal, but they will not be hindered by others in attempting to achieve it.

The all men are created equal statement was mostly directed at the British Nobility and had nothing to do with the situation of American blacks. I'm not saying that I dont believe in equality under the law, but the founders intended for this to be an ethnically European country. All of our naturalization/immigration acts until 1965 were created with the idea of keeping a White European majority in this country.

Great history lesson. I'm a history buff, but I had no idea about this! *Gasps* I do know that we can use Washington in this day and age, because he was opposed to political parties (his words have long since been vindicated), and if he were around today, everyone from all walks of life would unite around him... Add to the fact he grew hemp!
