- Like many kids of the '60s, I was a big fan of Lost In Space, especially the first season. I always wondered where they filmed the crash site sequence, and how. After working at 20th Century Fox for many years, I was able to track down call sheets and camera reports, and learned that the exterior miniature work was shot at Red Rock Canyon, north of Los Angeles--and it was shot in color, despite the pilot being in black-and-white. Some friends and I spent a day trying to scout out the exact location of the crash site, with the famous pinnacle the Jupiter 2 flew past on it's ill-fated landing. We found it! Here is video evidence, nearly, over 40 years later, of the pinnacle.
A four foot miniature was used for filming. I have a two foot miniature with me for the filming, and you can see that it's not nearly as big as the four foot miniature appears on the final footage.
I don't own the footage from the original show or the music; I'm using it only to enhance the experience. Notice the STEREO unused end title music!
The black and white film made the whole crash scene very surreal, other worldly and ominous. Still gives me goosebumps after 40 years.
Agreed. And when they used the color crash scenes in Seasons 2 and 3, it didn't have nearly the same effect.
And the lighting was soft which enhanced the otherworldliness.
That shot has always taken my breath away .... It was so real to me as a kid , I watched with a lump in my throat.

I'm 60 and still enjoy LIS. The Jupiter 2 is still my favorite sci-fi vehicle. I love seeing images of it.

Lost in Space, I was born in 1960 so this was a huge part of my childhood, here in the UK it was on every thursday at 4.55pm.
I would so look forward to cycling home from school to watch it.

I am 57 and I still watch Lost In Space on MeTV the best special-effects of all time.
I recall as a young lad the very first episode of the show. I was hooked like a tuna. By far my favorite childhood show.
I know every kid my age wished he was Will Robinson....me included!

season, filmed in black & white will always be my favorite
season! The only time a show or movie moved me that much
afterwards was the first time I saw each of the original three
Star Wars movies- 1977 - 1983.

thats really great to see the location. The shot of the Jupiter 2 descending with the sun flare behind it and the rock formation in the foreground was fantastic
From the moment the Jupiter 2 flies past that pinnacle on it's way to a hard touchdown, I was sold forever on tv shows like LOST IN SPACE and STAR TREK. Anything was possible to the camera lens, and the rest is iconic history. Still one of the great special effects shots on film, never bettered by CGI. Science fiction owes a lot to this moment.
Hi Geoff! I totally agree....I'm still astounded when I look at that footage, even on blu ray, how incredibly GOOD it looks. It's just minatures, some superb wire work, good effects (smoke and clouds) and perfect photography. All done IN CAMERA. Unsurpassed!

Wasn't this footage originally filmed in color and then processed in B&W for the this episode? I remember seeing the 1st episode of season 3 ("Condemned of Space") and watching the same film clip, this time in color, played in reverse when the Jupiter 2 takes off and flies by the same pinnacle from the first planet on season 1.
That crash scene could not have been improved upon. It's what it would have looked like if it had happened for real - including the thunderous sound of the crash at the end. Will never be topped for its realistic simplicity. The creators must have been proud.

The music on Lost In Space was just awesome, brings back memories just listening to it.
It was the 4 foot model used for this filming. I can't find it now, but another fan did a bit of geometrical analysis of my footage (with me holding the 2 foot shell) and the actual show footage, and it's clear that it was a 4 foot model. Having been to the actual location, a 10 foot model would have overwhelmed the pinnacle and I doubt if the piano wire could have supported a 10 foot fiberglass model. You can see (if you look closely) the two guide wires used in filming.
As others have said here. I grew up watching the show. Loved seeing this recreation of the first crash brings back fond memories of my childhood here in Australia. I am planning a mountain bike trip out there one day. Any chance of giving the actual location of that pinnicle. There are so many, it is hard to find the actual one! Thanks again for the memories!
One of my favorite shows in my youth, and I was always curious about the special effects and shooting locations. I wanted to be there to watch it all go down but could not, now in the age of You Tube, I am seeing behind the scenes of a lot of my favorite shows. Thanks for taking the time to go out and shoot this and show us.

I am 56 and I alwas loved Lost in Space! I saw it before I ever became aware of Star Trek. I always loved to design of the Jupiter 2 and , of course, the B9 robot.

You did a great job with this. Really nice work from the track down of the site to the way you edited the video. Sometimes when childhood mysteries are solved, there's a little let down. But, you made this mystery even more special. Thank You So Much!

Great scouting job. I saw the J2's first crash landing when I was 6. I thought it was footage of a real spacecraft. My father assured me it was just a model.

When i first saw this a couple years back I hadn't realized how much info was in your video.
Thanks to this I was able to pinpoint the exact locations on Google Earth, the location of the pinnacle as well as other areas.
I can see now that the Pinnacle Outcrop was the focal point for all the 5 scenes of the crash footage that were constructed to flow together in one sequence (though not ultimately shown that way).(each with around 2 takes using 2 cameras, 1 for each take)
The foreground of the final long crash sequence was all elements of the pinnacle outcrop.
The background was the wider area of Hague Canyon seen from the perspective of the pinnacle outcrop with the sand dune like hills at the right.
They're all there in your video.
The anvil shaped rock seen in the centre of the final crash sequence is right next to the Pinnacle in your video and it was great to see your close up of the anvil rock before panning left down to the pinnacle outcrop.
Its amazing to see how it was all done once the locations are establish.
A question, how did you come across the awesome stereo version of the alternate year one end theme?.
That is fantastic and a real treat.
Note, re the miniatures used for filming the space shots, I did notice that in a number of the shots the model was damaged on one side as many shots show was appears to be a large dent. I am guessing this wasn't the "Hero" version.
It is very obvious in some episodes and the out-take footage.
Thank you- that was so cool. I remember the promos before the show premiered. Even my grandmother said "We'll have to make sure we don't miss that." We watched it together whenever I visited her. I later found out she watched it even when I wasn't there.
Also my favorite show. Last month I finished location filming on the feature film "The Legend Of Ben Hall". (Think Aussie western set in 1865). Some of the locations looked exactly like Trona and Red Rock. I had a big smile and was so happy. The crew all 20 -30 years younger must of thought the old man was losing it.
I am not a big fan of Lost in Space. Watched it some when I was a kid but I was more of a Time Tunnel/Land of the Giants type. But that crash scene, the four or five shots of the saucer model with the sun in the absolute perfect spot and the camera locations and the 'smoke' clouds the ship slips through and the sound effects spot on and the rest of it? Makes me actually choke up at how it magnificent it looks being that old and in black and white.
I love watching all three show's then and today.

Time and the elements appear to have removed the protrusion on the right of that pinnacle, near the top. I watched Lost In Space as a kid 50 years ago, *LOVED* it then, still do now! Thanks for posting this video, and the memories it brought back!

I was born in 1960..LIS premiered on Australian TV in 1966-67....boy oh boy what a treat it was watching that first black and white series every Saturday night at 6.30pm..mindblowing viewing way back then..my fav episode There Were Giants in the Earth...brilliant..directed by Leo Penn..Sean Penn's dad..😊😊
One of my all time favorite shows. I still think the first season was by far the best. I still love the music and sound effects after all these years.

Thanks! It was a lot of detective work, going through old camera logs at Fox. My friend and I found the effects unit log for "Red Rpck Canyon....miniatures". I figured it had to be relatively close to roads/parking for the equipment. As it was it's about 1500 feet from the parking lot...a substantial hike, but flat. And that rock outcropping was PERFECT for the shot.
Amazing!! This brought back many childhood memories. I grew up watching Lost In Space in the '60's, and love it to this day!
The Jupiter II crash was one of my favourite scenes. It must have been so eerie and exciting when you realised you found the spot all these years later! Thanks again!
Well done on finding that site. As a kid i wouldnt miss an episode i particularly loved the episode were Will Robinson makes it back to earth.He somehow transports to a town in America and manages to get some much needed " STUFF " for the Jupiter 2 . At the end i think he is being chased and climbs on to a ledge thats covered in snow and beams out. Loved the music.
Great post indeed of the location...The scene music used in Lost in Space for me is what also made the show really special....from scary scenes to mystical it was really ahead of its time and will live in my memory forever ...Just brilliant !

David! i was a ravenous LIS fan back in the day. I would sprint home daily from school in order to not miss the "countdown". And I know a great deal of this show was because of the Johnny Williams music. I love soooo many of the cues. But my all time favorite cue is by far the music at 1:00. And yes, I do have the CDs. Thanks for posting this.
I loved that particular shot from the show, and John William's score really matched with the visuals. BTW, the model they used was from the pilot, "No Where to Hide" which the Gemini 12 prop was 4 feet across.
I was 8 and this was my favorite show of all time, every wednesday night at 8pm I woujld be glued to the B&W tv and NOTHING could make me move for one hour. I thought it was real. Wish I could go back. Very interesting clip here. Thank You
John Williams' scores were also a major factor in validating at least the first season. Music too good for tv, it seems. I will forever identify it as another character in the show, much like his later magnificent work in Star Wars, E.T., etc....
The first season of the show was epic. They spent a lot on the special effects .
I may be 5 years late, David, but greetings from England and many thanks for your time and effort in making this video. Lost In Space was a big hit on this side of The Pond in the 1960's, and I loved the show, especially the creepier first series (well, I was only a little boy!). I never had a crush on Penny...I think her big sister did it for me. Mind you, I always preferred older women, ha ha! And who didn't love the robot, or admire the smart, but always cool, Professor Robinson? Happy days....

My fav FX shot of all time. So glad that the place still exists. Must have been awesome to actually be there in person, after having watched it so many times on a screen for all these years. My dream is to visit the resort in Wales where Patrick McGoohan's "the Prisoner" was filmed.
I have camped there many times. One of my wallpapers is the striped walls of this canyon. It's stunning in its desolation, a wondrous corner of the high Mojave Desert. We would often camp on sleeping bags alone.

In the mid 60s I joined the Boys Club initially because they had the "ONLY" color TV, so I could catch the latest "Lost in Space" episode. I was a bit older, I'm sorry to say at the time I was drafted and ended up in Nam ... Thank God that's all over but I have always loved Lost in Space and always will.
as a kid I first watched it in Lebanon, none of us would miss it. The name was different though someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think it translates as Journey of the Ark, continued to watch it in Australia and is a wonderful memory watching with my grandmother she was a big fan as well. The music puts a smile on my face every time. 🙂

You're most welcome! It was a real thrill to find the EXACT spot. For me the final proof was the "hole in the rock" center left of the frame. In actuality it's two separate rock faces, but at exactly that angle they come together to create a rock arch. And that's how I knew, for sure, I was at the exact camera shooting spot.

David ...wow well done ! Recently moved to Rosamond CA for a new job and top on my list is to see Red Rock & Trona. I'm amazed at the creativity and expertise of Allen's people and for that matter all the folks who worked with miniatures back in the day like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Trek, LOFTG. As an adult discovered Thunderbirds and recently Japanese movies from the 60's loaded with miniatures. I still prefer these effects over CGI! Another poster pointed out the next great example after this was Star Wars. It was only about ten years later... I wonder how much of those effects were inspired by the work done on LIS. I think I might head up there today and look around. Ok now back to Godzilla's Revenge :-) Many Thanks !

John WIlliams, at his Pre-Jaws and Pre Star Wars, Pre-Close Encounters, Raiders and Superman BEST. Man, this soundtrack evokes the mystery and excitement and high-adventure of Interstellar Travel!
What always impressed me is his orchestral palate for this series. Note there are no violins, violas. Just celli and bass, brass, woodwinds,, and percussion. I think the only score he wrote for the series that had strings was "My Friend Mr. Nobody" which used strings and harp as a leitmotif for Penny.
Anyone else noticed the strange 'pause' in the ending of the theme (at 4:24). This version is also in stereo.

This was one of my favorite shots. (The crash landing) How did you find the spot?
Edwin Rivera I had worked at 20th Century Fox and a friend helped me find their camera logs from the special effects unit. It said that they had shot at Red Rock Canyon. So we went up there one weekend and we figured it had to be fairly close to the roadways because they had to lug all the equipment around. It took all afternoon but we eventually found the spot. And it was about a 15-minute walk from the main parking lot

I have heard several different sources that they actually used a 10' model for the crash scene. The ONLY time that it was used in production of the series. Later it went on to be used in City Beneath the Sea.

There was a You Tube video posted at one time with commentary by some members of the crew that filmed the crash scene episode. I recall they discussed the cable system that the four foot Jupiter 2 traveled along past the pinnacle down to the desert floor.

Nice Mr. Ice. Having already explored every inch of Vasquez Rocks, I'll have to check out Red Rock Canyon next. CGI will never look as good as the model work done for this shot.

Hello. Fantastic that you found the site. I am intrigued by this and for more bloopers of Jupiter 2 model work - but from my own internet searches it seems surprisingly limited. Is there a site somewhere that has more? Great work!!
+MASCOTT100 Thanks for your kind words! As far as I know there aren't any sites devoted to the effects work. BUT....get the blu ray boxed set of the entire series that was just released. They have some special features, which includes the camera rushes from some of the effects shots, including for the first time, the crash scene! What fascinated me was seeing them in color, but also the scale of the human technicians in the shots (albeit very briefly) and also the frame rate of the camera. Frequently the camera was shooting (if my memory serves) at about 160 fps or so, and if memory serves the crash scene was 80fps upwards...which means what we saw was really slow motion. (Sound speed is 24fps, so a 160fps is 6x slow motion at least. And you can clearly see the 2 support wires on a couple of shots, glinting in the sun. Plus, on a few studio shots you can see that the camera was turned on it's side and the Jupiter 2 was in reality just going straight up or down, as opposed to horizontally. In the episode THE DERELICT you can see the wires in the finished print--going horizontally--when the Jupiter 2 is ingested into the derelict. It was all GREAT in-camera effects work by the Lydeckers!
