I don't know why, but your solo camping winter videos are so soothing to watch and relax me a lot. Would love to see more of these. Your 7 days solo from last year I watch on a regular basis with a good wine and fills me with content. Keep up the good work! :)
I always come back to your videos Jon because your passion (obsession) for this lifestyle shines through and makes them memorable. Your poetry is good too! Keep up the great work.
This one popped up in my feed even though I'd watched it already. So I watched it again just because. Have been thinking of you, hope you and your knee are doing okay. ❤ to you and Erin.
Still working my way through your videos in random order (now). One suggestion for cold weather car starting is to keep some stove pipe and 90 degree elbow in your car. You can warm up the engine compartment by using a one burner campstove outside the car and stove pipe to funnel heat under the car. Would help a cold and slow cranking battery turn the engine over easier. Synthetic oil better to use also. I used to this for a crappy snowmachine that wouldnt start below minus 30 back in the 80s in northern Sask when doing exlporation geophysics. Used a Coleman model 505 Naptha stove. A butane/propane mix stove would not be as effective though. Really enjoying your vids:)
Isn't it, though? Some of my favorite back country experiences ever have been deep in the heart of winter. Those moments where you pause to catch you breath in deep snow and marvel at the absolute stillness.
Love that clear winter evening sky. We used to stop our snowmobiles outside town when it was super cold out. The stars and winter sky in northern Ontario are incredible. Only other place I've seen as many stars is in the Rockies. I remember one Christmas it was -60F , the smoke from the house chimneys going straight up, dead still looking out the kitchen window down the street. That might be the year White River hit -72, not sure. You could hear the rafters in the attic banging as the nails got so cold and conntracted. The mornings are as beautiful as the shot Jon shows, wonderful time to be out going ice fishing , for many.
That confirms it!. You're completely bonkers but well done for sticking it out. Great watching it from under my nice cosy duvet with toasty warm fingers and toes looking out of my bedroom window to the freezing conditions here in the Yorkshire Dales
Korean BBQ is probably one of the better meal ideas for hot stove winter camping. Those hub cap grills aren’t very heavy and are pretty versatile for camping even in summer. Totally worth the effort just don’t forget the soju!
What a cold night! But the real test in these condisions are the second night. That is when you see if you cope and if you are abel to keep your gear dry and functional. I think the best way would be to prepare a fire in the evening, so you easely lit it in the morning. A place to worm up your hands is what you need dealing whith everything. 😀
When I would return from a 20 mile mountain bike ride in low as -10F, my wool balaclava would have ice buildup from my nostrils to me ears. I rode every day like it was nothing, but I don't think I'd have your courage to sleep in -25C let alone walk to the camp site. Best!
Nice video, it drew me in so far as to I had to go and put a sweater on just watching...😁Grew up in Northern Ontario and in Edmonton...those clear cold nights I always found beautiful and refreshing...though I never had to sleep outside!
Just what I needed today!! Love your winter videos, they’re the right combo of chilly and cozy! Towards the end though I thought you just started pouring water into the cup holder no cup and was momentarily confused 😂
Love your video and love hearing that _20/-30F crunch of the snow but being a Southern Texas boy, nope, zero and above ok but from the sound of your car starting, that was cold! No joy unless you have to.... Thanks again. Ps, you ever notice when it's cold, it finds every little crack that is exposed.....in your sleeping blanket or whatever..
Don't forget to LIKE, COMMENT AND SHARE! IT HELPS JON AND ERIN I don't know them and I HAVE NEVER had a personal conversation with either of them but this is our FAVORITE UA-cam CHANNEL AND THEY DESERVE OUR HELP DURING THIS TIME IN THEIR LIFE!
Love the extra footage of the inferred camera! Gives that extra perspective..Lol. I love watching you from the warmth of my living room! ….oh how I hate to be cold!!! We sure can witness how passionate you are; your love for the great outdoors!!!! It is like a religion… a faith… you trust that the earth will provide. Love and watching you and Erin…it gives us an inspiration ❤️!! Keep up the positive life vibes! #dowhatyoulove
There's a really good Canadian chip called Tomahawk, BBQ flavour yum!! found it in a grocery store as a temporary item. delicious! Jon is looked ridiculously cold!!
I remember the days long ago of winter camping in Michigan! Did it for years running a trapline! When I went to a hot tent it made it much more comfortable than out in the open or even under a tarp! Very cool video and some great advise for those who might winter camp!
This is really amazing. Dealing with such cold and still able to make a wonderful footage! All alone!! Got me with the barbecue 😂. My favourite “Geographic Channel”😉 Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻. Congratulations !👏🏻👏🏻🔥
Wow! This one made me worry about you Jon! Please be safe! So beautiful!! Can’t wait until your channel explodes!! And everyone else realizes how awesome you and Erin are!!!
It's always so nice to get back to warmth and comfort after being less than warm and comfy for a day or so. First thing I would do is fire up my canister stove right there in the vehicle and make ramen! I've always wondered if that mask works so that was cool. I wear a hard plastic one that attaches to ski goggles for winter cycling, I wouldn't sleep in it though, too much drip.
Jon, thanks once again for taking one for the team to show the reality of winter camping! That car must have felt heavenly... once it finally warmed up 😁
Hahahaha My wife was watching this with me hahahaha about a few minutes in hahaha she got up and said nope......And went and turned the heat up hahahaha......Thanks
It’s 33 degrees Fahrenheit here in Texas and I’m wearing 2 shirts, woolly boogers, 2 heating pads on me. A weighted blanket and 2 extra fuzzy blankets. 😂 oh and I’m inside lol. It’s about 49 degrees in my house. I won’t turn on the heat unless it drops below freezing. Because my pipes will freeze. It’s supposed to be below freezing the rest of the week.
You were freezing me just watching you! My house is drafty so it's never truly warm. And watching you turn into a popsicle wasn't helping! ⛄️⛄️⛄️Brrrr!
Brave man! That sure was chilly. I am surprised you didn't have all your sleeping system inside a bivi bag. A few extra degrees warmth and keep the dampness off!
Really fascinating video. I live in the UK and it been -8/-11°C where I am. Pretty much the coldest I've ever seen it in my life. Cant imagine about 15° lower
Winter camping, in the sleeping bag, an empty bottle to serve as a urinal is very handy. No pun intended. Saves one from having to get completely out of the bag . I've used a goretex bivy bag when winter camping with no tent. No worries about frost on the sleeping bag in the morning or snow or any weather during the night. People seemed amazed when I didn't use a tent to winter camp. Or thought I was crazy. Didn't sseem unreasonable to me. Way easier/simpler than a tent would you agree?
It makes me cold sitting here watching you out there at that low temp under the stars! You made it and glad you survived for we get to see more videos down the road!👍👍🎅🏼
I agree with Shinuizabusa2180. So quiet in the winter snow. I need to get back out but I don't go when it is as cold as you. I look for temps above 30. Yeah, I'm a wuz or however you spell it. I am just back from my 2nd winter camp this year. I am considering another shortly to welcome the NY but I don't want to miss the Rose Bowl. Sports Bar?
Perfect timing as my husband and I get ready to head out for our first cold tent backpacking trip. Certainly not getting to -25 but -5c will be a cold enough first experience!
Great video Jon, but brrrrr that looked cold😨!! I wouldn't be surprised if your trail cam temp was accurate, since forecasted temps are far from 100%. I suppose you probably didn't get a chance to glance at your real thermometer in the night, would be fun to know with certainty since you endured it😄. Also, if you were setup in a little low spot compared to the surrounding terrain, it's likely that the colder air could pool in the low lying area around you. I sure look forward to hot tenting myself, but I have zero desire to cold camp like that. And please don't feel like you have to prove anything and justify yourself to people who question your integrity, they are not worth it! Take care🥰.
Wow, no way! That took guts! We're having 30-40 deg below zero fahrenheit wind chill here in Wisconsin. Next week's forecast is 30's and 40's ABOVE zero. Crazy! Enjoyed the video. Take care and Merry Christmas!
Great vid Jon, planning to get up to the Sudbury or North Bay area just after Christmas to do some cold camping of my own. Thanks for all the useful tips over the years.
Bought a FLIR years ago and never thought of using that way. Use it on my vehicles to check over heating components and checking cold spots in the house. Interesting video.
@@LostLakes mine hasn't been bad that way - yet anyway. After a drive, check your wheels on your vehicles for overheating in the brakes and bearings. Clogged catalytic converters can be found easily too. All kinds of uses.
I was expecting to hear an owl. Oh well. And I agree, hands & feet are always the trouble spots for cold. Stars would have been spectacular. What app did you mention previously for star gazing?
You are nuts. You guys have a spiffy new tent and stove and you go out and sleep in the snow in a body bag. Apparently Erin is the smart one in the relationship! 😄 love the sparkle of the snow and how quiet it gets out there.
Jon been watching your videos for a long time. Such great content and so happy for you that your subscriber base is growing so rapidly almost 200k!! You deserve it all and much more! Cheers
Awesome video! I seen you said your feet were starting to get cold maybe look into neos overshoes. I use them for ice fishing and I find they work great they probably won't fit in Snowshoes ( they don't fit in mine) but you could always put them on once you are at your destination.
Oh man, I know it kinda sucked but it always looked like a heck of a good time! I can’t wait for your first snow I am going to hit the hill for a good cold camp!
The -36 might not be too far off. I went to work that morning and it was -29 when the forecast called for -19. I find that at the height of a cold, high pressure system the cold settles in the low spots between valleys.
Jon this was a little bit crazy experiment! honestly if I did this it would be the last day of my life, but I could say "it was a good_death". 🙂 Looking forward to the hot tent camp outs.
I love the winter camping videos. They have this special kind of beauty and i can´t wait to go out for a few nights. Much love from germany buddy.
Agreed! Cheers! 👋
Hello friends 🇲🇨🇲🇨

Really appreciate that! 💚

Thanks so much Richard!
This one popped up in my feed even though I'd watched it already. So I watched it again just because. Have been thinking of you, hope you and your knee are doing okay. ❤ to you and Erin.
Lots of great cold-weather ideas and tips squeezed into a few simple minutes of video!
Love the old school snow shoes Jon. I have a pair from my airforce daze.
Brrrrr ...But you took a shower with moonlight and starlight. That winter night vibe! Thank you for sharing and I'm glad you're home safely. : )
One great tip for you. Use your boots as a pillow. You cross them, sole on each side, under your head, and they'll be warm in the morning.

it's a different kind of beauty out there in the cold winter. so quiet and serene. Quality video as always, Jon!
Isn't it, though? Some of my favorite back country experiences ever have been deep in the heart of winter. Those moments where you pause to catch you breath in deep snow and marvel at the absolute stillness.
Body bag for search & rescue, how nice of you to think ahead :) Love the Channel, all the best from Colorado & Happy New Year!
Lol thanks Henry and happy new year!

Fantastic scenery as usual. That thermal cam was awesome. Loved seeing the moon and sunrise. But c’mon Jon! Korean BBQ chips for a meal?!
Hahah I've eaten many a bag of chips in lieu of a meal
I know you were glad when your car started.😎
simply, wow
WOW! Cool! And I really mean COOL! You're a pretty tough guy, well done!
That confirms it!. You're completely bonkers but well done for sticking it out. Great watching it from under my nice cosy duvet with toasty warm fingers and toes looking out of my bedroom window to the freezing conditions here in the Yorkshire Dales

Liked this video. Always like how informative you are on your trips. Can't wait to see your next winter camping trip.
Very good and instructive video! Impresive! Thank you John!
Thank you John, that draw was fun! Hope Erin is feeling better, hope you don't actually get Covid. Best wishes for the holidays
You are such a badass. I freaking love the cold weather and snow but I was painfully cold just watching!
When I would return from a 20 mile mountain bike ride in low as -10F, my wool balaclava would have ice buildup from my nostrils to me ears. I rode every day like it was nothing, but I don't think I'd have your courage to sleep in -25C let alone walk to the camp site. Best!

Thank you Lost Lakes that was different and enjoyable to watch
There's a really good Canadian chip called Tomahawk, BBQ flavour yum!! found it in a grocery store as a temporary item. delicious! Jon is looked ridiculously cold!!
As someone who can't do this, I appreciate the vids. I love the slow calm pace.

Awesome episode Brother!! Your an absolute UNIT for this camp 👊🏼😎🤙🏼🫡
What a brave soul you are Jon!! Love the Korean BBQ 😂 and happy hot tent camping soon I hope!! Thanks as always for sharing with us 💜 Barret
I was shivering just watching you get into your sleeping bags! Thanks for sharing!!
Hi John, I would use the Amok around the Lake Superior Area with my love Paul! Love your channel!
I like how you challenge yourself all the time and show how it is done.
You’re by far my favorite camping UA-camr as well as my backcountry angling idol. Thank you for the content!
💚💚💚
Wow, this was epic. Good to know your gear worked as it should have. Great video. Thx
Thanks ST!

You know what you need is wisky in cold like that. Oh and coffee yeah that's a great combo in the cold

Thought this video was from 12th July, then I remembered that Canada uses US date format! This was a fun one to watch, thanks!

I have a hard time sitting in my deer blind for several hours. Let alone sleeping out in the open! Good job!

As always, nice vid Jon 👌
This looks like fun. Snuggling down in a nice warm sleeping bag. Especially if not too far away from a cabin. Or resort. 😋
Outside a cabin would be a better way to do it lol

I go out in the cold often I'm always interested in how others layer up their winter gear, video was interesting ty
Yeah. Good stuff
Fantastic as always. Great work with the camera and lovely framing to capture the scene.
Thank you!
11 seconds out & already a COMMENT & A LIKE
incredible courage you have, what an experience.
I've yet to bring myself to do this. Still working up my confidence in my gear! Enjoyed this though very much!
I once camped out similar to this, it was in July and temps dropped to 15 C! I feel your pain.
Winter has a beauty all its own. Another great video.
Wow, no way! That took guts! We're having 30-40 deg below zero fahrenheit wind chill here in Wisconsin. Next week's forecast is 30's and 40's ABOVE zero. Crazy! Enjoyed the video. Take care and Merry Christmas!
Crazy swing! Thanks Judy and Merry Christmas!
Crazy dude loved it 🤞🤞
Northern winters are so beautiful...its just grey and muddy in Southern Ontario. Cool trip jon!
I feel ya...I've been there
Great vid Jon, planning to get up to the Sudbury or North Bay area just after Christmas to do some cold camping of my own. Thanks for all the useful tips over the years.
REALLY ENJOYABLE VIDEO,THANK YOU MAN🙏👏🫶💛💙

It's pretty fun...a lot of reviews say they're buggy and the battery dies if not charged every month

Well that night sky was a hoot! I use the free version of StarTracker
I'm too old for that, my fingers and mostly freeze even in my home, but interesting to watch....Thanks, I really enjoyed it!
I get the feeling this was secretly about proving a point to Xander...I respect it, nice vid
You are nuts. You guys have a spiffy new tent and stove and you go out and sleep in the snow in a body bag. Apparently Erin is the smart one in the relationship! 😄 love the sparkle of the snow and how quiet it gets out there.
Hahah actually I'm working on a couple of hot tent edits but this was an easy one to fire out 😜
Sweet, new video, gonna watch it right away…
Oh nice video, brrr too cold for me. So eh, what to do if that car wouldnt start.
Jon been watching your videos for a long time. Such great content and so happy for you that your subscriber base is growing so rapidly almost 200k!! You deserve it all and much more! Cheers

Goodness that looks cold! But I love these videos. You are amazing!
Just before this video I watched the Q&A video and got a good laugh on the chips story.
Great job Jon! Love this type of camping ❤
Great video! Good on you for have the willpower to film in such cold! 😅
Full beast mode there. Most impressive
I would never question a guy that’s nuts! Haha brrrr! Thanks for the video. Would be nice to here what Erin is up to,she’s a big part of the channel.
Yeah I would like that too but she has a full-time job, I do this for work
Great content. Thanks for sharing Jon
Jon this was a little bit crazy experiment! honestly if I did this it would be the last day of my life, but I could say "it was a good_death". 🙂 Looking forward to the hot tent camp outs.
Zooming in on 200K! Huge congratulations! 🇨🇦👋Another great adventure - it's cold, be careful!
Thank you!
