  • Here's a vocal mixing technique used by all the pros: reverb ducking! Use the dry vocal as a sidechain to duck the reverb's volume - so the dry signal pokes through, and the reverb swells up in the gaps.

      just create a aux/bus/send, put a reverb on it, put a sidechain compressor after, then send the vocal as the sidechain trigger, its been a thing forever

    Use pre-delay. Helps keep reverb from clashing with vocal too

    • @rist98
      @rist98 9 місяців тому +1

      Idk, Ive never liked using pre-delay. Maybe just a little.
      But maybe I use reverbs in a different way, than shown here, where its used as an effect, not a tonal tool. Like, here it is meant to be separate, but the mixes Ive done, they call for a use where obvious separation isn't the goal, in fact, the opposite.

    • @JakeLewisReal
      @JakeLewisReal 9 місяців тому +2

      @@rist98 Yeah in this case we're discussing placing the sound within a space, like a room, hall, cathedral ect to give a sense of sound staging and depth. Pre-delay will give you that environment while keeping the vocal the focal point.
      What you're talking about is using it as an FX which would take the center stage.

    • @Cableguys

      Pre-delay offsets the reverb start time, putting 'space' between the dry and reverb signals. This can give separation and clarity, and change perceived distance, but does not affect the reverb's volume, so the reverb may still 'cloud' the voice depending on the source and reverb size. Using the dry signal to duck the reverb will help the voice cut through, since the reverb's volume is automatically turned down by the voice's dynamics.

    • @JakeLewisReal
      @JakeLewisReal 9 місяців тому +1

      @@Cableguys Yes, you're correct my friend!
      Unless you're going for a stylized effect, if the volume of your reverb is loud enough to cloud the source even with pre-delay, then your reverb is probably too loud!

    I'd just tell the vocalist to go again , but with some actual diction instead of mumbling. hey presto: clear vocal! then you can do what you want with reverb when the performance is good!
    also that wasn't a dry vocal, get rid of the compression and that would help too.

    is this the same as pre-delay? i always turned up the timing of pre-delay to duck verb from a vocal but if it’s different can someone explain that?

    • @eyotawakishwit8697
      @eyotawakishwit8697 10 місяців тому +3

      Similar concept, actually. I was told that the pre-delay is important because it influences the illusion of distance between the sound source and the confines of the space causing the reflections. In other words, it delays the start of the reverb so that the initial transient comes through, thus making the space seem bigger or longer because the reverberant parts take longer to sound.
      However, the concept being shown in this video differs by pulling down the volume of the reverb itself when it detects transients in the source audio regardless of however the pre-delay is set.

    • @Cableguys
      @Cableguys  10 місяців тому +4

      No, they're not the same. Hope this helps!
