Ok, I know I might make some Adobe Fan's mad here but remember, this is strictly my opinion and why I chose to ditch Premiere Pro. I have used Premiere Pro 5 years prior and in all honesty have grown frustrated as to how Adobe is not listening to their community who uses the software. That's it. Plain and simple :) ** Edit ** I have recently learned the free version can also export 4k now. A recent change Blackmagic made that I was not aware of until after making this video. More of a reason to give it a look!
I'm going to switch from Premiere to Resolve because of this video. I've been working with EDS (Adobe) and have yelled at them 3 times because I'm skipping frames on standard 1080p Multi-cam (Unacceptable) on a brand new 4K Editing monster. I'm now shooting 100% 4K so the frustration is even higher! See ya!
Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Honestly, so glad to have found your channel. We have a very similar thought process regarding design as well as clean and intuitive tools for work. Subscribed! Looking forward to watch your other videos!
A big issue I had with Premiere was the constant zooming in and out of the timeline to do anything. R14 is not perfect but you can get the job done. The titler has some issues so I end up using other tools for that. The addition of Fairlight is HUGE! And, if all you need is an editor, it's free - If you need the extra 3D and NR stuff from studio it's only $300 and no subscription. I have had Studio since R9 and have yet to pay for an upgrade - BMD is very generous with this product. Nice video Ben.
This dude really knows what he's talking about. I have edited on Premiere, Davinci, and Sony Vegas. And hell Sony Vegas is more responsive and efficient in workflow than Premiere. The workflow of Premiere is ridiculous and not user friendly for beginners at all. Once I finally mastered it, it just felt like I was putting in more effort for the simplest tasks that are easily performable and more organized on Vegas and Davinci. The fact that Adobe has a monthly fee to tax on editors that they know will have no choice but to cough up is also just sketchy. No one wants another bill.
No.. Premiere pro it's not beginner friendly at all. I'm actually taking a break from editing a 10 minute video. I just spend hours on doing a simple task which involved me in practically learning a whole new thing. I'm using premiere pro because I had to sell my macbook.
That is great that you're excited. I can speak for a lot of self-teaching beginners that the task we had to spend hours of learning is.... how to even BEGIN to edit with premiere pro itself and figure out where everything is. Oh and the fact that English is not my first language, the lack of self-explanatory icons doesn't help either. 4 empty balck boxes and stacks of columns with some words only understood by a group of people. C'mon. I've spent at least a week editing a video that could've been 8 hours tops using something like final cut pro not knowing a thing prior.
Yeah I totally agree with that! Maybe better as Apple left us high and dry. This is a great company so far. In fact they remind me of Apple about 15 years ago!
I've tried 4 times to understand and use nodes and still cannot make any progress. I gave up totally on that software and moved to sony vegas. All I wanted was to do simple things but resolve made it nearly impossible with it segmented and isolated workspaces all of which require so complex language course to figure out.
Danny Seaton There is a free version of Resolve but they also have a Studio version which is $299. The free version does not have advanced noise reduction, collaborative workflow and 3D workflow. Unless you need those features the free version will be more than sufficient for your needs. The interface in the free and paid versions are the same.
I'm just transitioning to video from stills. So it's all fairly new to me in terms of which software to use. As for what my needs are... I'm shooting vlog style video, plus some cinematic style montages. Mainly fitness based, with some slomo type shots, and the somewhat cliché cinematic effects... Would you say the free version is enough in that respect? Can you use LUTs, colour grading etc....? Thank you.
Danny Seaton You can color grade and use LUTs in the free version. You can do slow motion (retiming) in the free version as well. You may want to check out Ripple Training which you might find useful. They have a channel on here. Just type Ripple Training in the search box. Do keep in mind most of their videos do center around Final Cut Pro X and Motion, both are which Apple products. They do have training for Resolve as well. rippletraining.com
Bjarne Nilsson oh yes, I've downloaded the release version about 1 hour after it went up. The fusion part is still a little unstable but the rest is rock solid.
Adobe views its customers as cash cows who need to pony up money every month for the privilege of using their software. Blackmagic is willing to sell me a product that is mine to keep for a one time fee. The decision was easy.
Im suprised that resolve doesnt get as much press. Because in the film industry its pretty essential, especially for its amazing colour grading capabilities.
The film industry is a closed space filled with people acting like crummy old farts. They'd be still using Avid Media Composer version 1 if they could. Really the only reason why anything in Hollywood posthouses gets better is because the rich bois at Universal and other studios start shooting at higher resolutions due to the company ownership's pressure. I know people who haven't upgraded their Pro Tools software since 2011. I also know people who haven't upgraded their Avid workstations for over 6 years. Resolve is kind of new in the editing scene, they only started doing it in 2015, most people in Hollywood haven't even reacted to this change because they are slow. But honestly as an industry as risk averse as this, you go with the trusted solutions.
SGK_GaminG™ nobody cares about a dead OS plus like he mentioned earlier it's buggy not only is the software buggy but hardware works like crap too because there isn't really any proper driver support for Linux either gaming rigs runs on fumes when it comes to Linux and so does plenty of other things limitations sucks.
CORENS Linux isn’t a dead OS. It has actually been growing in the past few years. However, Linux is NOT FOR EDITING OR GAMING. Think of Linux as a specifically designed tool. It is mainly deployed in servers and other computers that have more of a specifically defined purpose. Though Linux is very flexible, I personally think of it as more of a backbone to perform specific tasks because to most consumers, using the terminal is a no go.
how is the rendering when your editing a 4k file, i have a beefy computer, so in premiere i have to render which doesnt take to long of time but can this render in a way to help my work flow? like how apple program renders everytime you leave the clip in the timeline
I happened to run across this program about a week ago While looking at the Black Magic Ghost. I'm currently an Avid Media Composer User, and I was blown away by this free program. It's doesn't have a lot of the workflow annoyances the AMC has like putting on an effect just to resize something or needing to resize images. It also loads far faster, and costs 1/3 the price of an upgrade if you want the full version. (Currently still using the free one) I've been impressed with the tools and color correction- I've pretty much decided to switch. Oh, and I use Corel Draw instead of Adobe now too, for the same reasons you mentioned.
I'm a media composer user also and this is my last year upgrading. It's just to far behind in new tools and innovations. I understand they have to keep their legacy users and be able to be backward compatible to old projects but it's a hinder for them.
I used Avid in the USMC and in School and I left it as soon as I had a chance and haven't looked back. I have been using Premiere for the last decade and probably going to switch becuase of all the issues.
I have similar reasons for switching from After Effects to Fusion (except After Effects SO quick for titles, can’t ditch that). I work with 3D compositing and After Effects comes with C4D but having to jump back and forth gets frustrating. Element 3D is nice but again, there are limitations. Fusion - 3D is native, no problems with editing the 3D models a little during the compositing phase. It’s all native and all-in-one - you can’t beat that.
I agree with you, with what you said, right at the beginning. I have been using both for years, but now that Resolve has added much better editing tools, I also feel like I can focus more. And a lot of the "effects" that I used in Adobe were mostly just color tools that were separated into multiple effects - all of which can be used in the color tab of Resolve. I havent severed the ties with Adobe yet, but.....
I am about to severe the tie completely. I was hoping the 2018 versions would change a lot but they didn't. I will always have a soft spot for Adobe and am open to have their programs win me over again but for now... I have to say goodbye
Don't get me wrong. I can use Photoshop without thinking anymore, so I may still be throwing them money, but when it comes to their video-based programs....I think this may be the last year I use them. Nice channel by the way.
Understandably Premiere's updates won't be as significant, since Resolve's editor is still in it's infancy. That being said, I switched to Resolve as well and like you could not be happier with the move! They do in fact listen to their users, and it's great. I can't wait to see what they improve next.
I totally agree with your video. I just recently started using Resolve, and it's editing and color tools have blown me away with their simplicity and ease of use. I'm going through some certified training at the moment. I always feel a sense of amazement as I go through the training with how intuitive the tools and workflow are. With what little I know, I was able to complete and deliver a project on my own.
I loved sony vegas pro, however 1 HUGE thing made me search for another video editing tool: PREVIEW LAGG. I actually build a pc with a gtx 1080ti, threadripper 1920x and 32gb 3200mhz RAM, however all of this still wasn't enough to not get huge preview lagg even on good-high settings. When I learned everone online had the same problem that was it for me, I cant create anything without instantly previewing it without lagg.
I love Vegas but it does throw some reliability issues - sometimes I've had to swap a large file between V14 to edit it, then to V16 to render it without hanging.
I came here to look at other options too. I'm kinda tired of premiere and all the problems, and I can't afford a monthly subscription if im only using it for a 2 features a year.
I have a couple of GH4's and GH5 and a Atomos Ninja Inferno. but will be buying the new Blackmagicdesign pocket cinema 4K on release in Sepember as it records Prores internally, and fits nicely into my eco system. plus they are throwing in a full Resolve Studio license with the Camera.
Wel 4k is a bit confusing since we have 25 formats. the free versoin of resolve does (as far as i know) UHD (that is for btoadcast ans UHD blu-ray ) but not 4k DCI (used in cinemas for that you need Resolve studio)
You are so right..... Adobe has been sleeping for years but still make a lot of money. I started working in Photoshop and Illustrator back in 1995 (Photoshop 2.5),- and look how small the development has been over the last 23 years...... TWENTYTHREE YEARS!!!!! I have now switched to Affinity Photo, Affinity Design, DaVinci and Fusion. This saves me a lot of money AND make my life a lot easier. The only Adobe app I still use is InDesign, since no other app gives my the same userexperience in DTP. So thanks boddy. You are just down my alley.
The version of Resolve in this video was 14 but recently, Davinci Resolve 15 beta was released and it has audio sync functionality that is far better then the audio sync in Resolve 14.
....I am so happy, that I switched to Resolve. The main thing is, that resolve is advancing so fast, while Adobe is busy collecting and counting the money from theire cloud-system...
I totally gave up on Adobe Premiere and have been using Final Cit Pro X which I am very happy with. Downloaded DaVinci and am learning it, looks to be very good so far.
Dude! I am about to binge on all of your DaVinci tutorials! I'm a total noob, but I'm totally stoked on DaVinci. And, well, since House of Cards is toast... I now have time to learn from you. Cheers!
++Super Huge Reason: Adobe: You are "forced" to pay for the whole of their apps to get PP and AE, there is no plan! No choice! Resolve: one time payment! I SUPPORT Resolve all the way!
Hi Ben. Great video; really enjoyed your opinions and the way you expressed yourself. I'm in a different place than you were when you chose the transition to Resolve in that I have been editing for the past 10 years on Final Cut Pro 7 on a 2010 Mac Pro tower. When Apple turned their backs on pros when they went to FCP X, I simply stayed with 7 and did not scatter to Premiere Pro or to Avid Media Composer (which I cut my teeth on for the first 10 years of my editing career). While most of my colleagues in the business moved on, Final Cut 7 became a well-worn tool that I am lightning fast on, where I know bodies are buried, etc. etc. Now that I am shooting 4k with my camera and my drone, whelp, the old Mac Pro just ainn cutting it anymore. I just bought a brand new iMac i7, loaded it up with RAM, and am now in the process of jumping to Davinchi Resolve. I'm pretty much all in -- hell, I even bought one of the beautiful LogicKeyBoard Davinci Resolve keyboard as a crutch to learn keyboard shortcuts. Soooo...I am presently going through the learning curve process on this app, all while having current, deadline intensive work to get out the door. I'm sure you feel my pain. At this point, I just have a few NOOB questions for you and would appreciate your help. 1. SELECTING FOOTAGE FORWARD OR BEHIND A POINT. Final Cut has a cursor selection that allows you to select ALL footage forward or behind a certain point in the timeline. There is a tool for selecting a single track or across multiple tracks. This allows you to select and move footage as a group without having to drag and select the clips. Particularly in a long or complex piece, dragging across tracks to select clips invariably ends up missing some and causing carnage. Question: Does Resolve have this feature. If yes, how do I access it. If not, how do you deal with this issue? 2.DROP DOWN ARROWS FOR BINS. This is a simple one. In my workflow, I am used to a tight way of organizing my footage, my sequences, images, music, etc. on each production. I import and arrange my media and then go about reviewing and labeling each one. One thing I noticed in Resolve is that when you create a bin and start putting media in it, no drop-down arrow appears so that you can quickly see what's in the bin! Am I missing something here? 3. NESTING. Does Resolve give you the ability to nest multiple video tracks? I will often nest multiple tracks that I have built into, say, a complex animation. I can then perform zooms and pans or apply effects (as example) without having to scale each element. I haven't found that function. It's gotta be here, right? 4. AUDIO EDITING RESOLUTION. A question for you on audio editing. Does Resolve give you the ability to edit audio on a dub-video frame basis? So, if a needed sound edit occurs, you know, 17 frames into a video frame, can you chop it there (as, say, you can in Pro Tools or other NLE audio apps), or are you stuck with moving your cursor to the next chunk over at the beginning or end of the frame? Thanks so much to you and anyone else on this thread who might take the time to answer these questions for me. I am sure I will have more, but this will help me get started churning stuff out. Also, these tutorials on UA-cam are great, but is there a really outstanding course you would recommend? I just looked on Lynda.com and I'm not super impressed over there. Thanks again!
Thank you for this video! I was wanting another program for sometime now and you made some very compelling arguments in favor of Resolve. I will now be buying this software.. Thanks again
I tried out, HitFilm, Premiere Pro, Movie Studio and Davinci. Davinci is my favorite among all of them. Once you learn it, it's so simple and awesome, Powerful program!!! Love it.
Great video, but you don’t need to switch to after effects for mask tracking. I was able to do this from within premiere for years now. Full keyframe, tracking, and video compositing functionality are built in to pr pro.
I am trying to software after Cyberlink Power Director does not let me download a purchased version after 30 days that I bought a year ago. They expect you to buy a extended download time to be able to download it after 12 month! No Thanks!
Crackin video Ben.......I too found Adobe a bit overwhelming at times considering how much of the interface i was using.....this looks a lovely piece of software. Cheers mate
Just switched from premiere pro to resolve to save money, as a poor student i can only use the free version yet i find it so powerful and the UI is pleasing to the eye, just love it, wish i had found it earlier
I love that there are options, I need them to up their sounds game. If Divinci Resolve 15 or 16 can replace Premiere, Audition and simple after Effects tasks, I am 1000x on board.
That was quick indeed ;) Thanks for sharing, will definitely check it out and am looking for your insights on this program through tutorials since I do not bring over Premiere knowledge.
Hey, what can I say. I am trying to get my momentum going! Your comment on the previous video was honestly just what I needed to hear so I appreciate it :) I will make some tutorials on it for sure but I have a lot up my sleeve as well!
Ben Farnham Happy if it could help a little and I hope it was not too blunt, I only meant it in a good way. Great! Sounds amazing and am really looking forward to everything you have up the sleeve!
When a software company takes a product and goes to a subscription model, it is because the product is mature. In other words, there isn't a whole lot to add, that would allow them to come out with new versions. That said, research shows that the subscription model provides an increase of about 80% over the traditional way. So, you have more money, less incentive to improve and a locked in base. It just doesn't get any better - for the software company. I have used Fusion for several years, and I do like it, so I can see going to their Davinci Resolve Studio 14 an easy move.
I am really loving Fusion as well. The actual node based system was a bit of a learning curve for me coming from After Effects but I am really impressed. As for subscription models, you are completely right. It does suck though because you would think more money might be more incentive to improve but big corporate doesn't think that way.
Totally agree tired of software renting. Car makers want to do this with driverless cars no one's asking for. I'm refuse to constantly pay for something.
Been using Resolve(free) since version 12. Dumped my Premiere CS6 and never signed up for Premiere CC. Love the Resolve 14 update. With the drop in the Studio version price and perpetual updates, I'm definitely headed that direction.
I love resolve. I love how fast and slick it is. I love how it feels and looks more like an app optimised/designed for osx. It is a blend between fcps and premiere. BUT the only problem is I like to learn how to do things on youtube tutorials, and the vast majority of these are aimed at fcpx or premiere users...
My chief reason for sticking with Adobe was Audition. I loved how there was an entire ecosystem of products, where I could just make changes to a file in one program, and have it automatically update the file in another. If DaVinci allows me to edit everything in one program; that would be even better. What does DaVinci have in the way of an audio track editor?
the tab to the right of the color tab is for audio, its called "fairlight" and is supposed to be a full pro quality audio editing tool. It's included in the free version too. I don't know enough about audio to say if its better than audition though.
I am a beginner and paying a monthly fee for adobe didn't seem wise. saw your video 2 months ago and started trying davinci 14 (lite). I can't thank you enough. It is a pro grade tool that doesn't cost anything. Just a quick note from my experience though, davinci is a bit hardware hungry. I've a 6 core ryzen cpu with radeon 560 4 gig gpu. The timeline performance is still a tiny bit sluggish. maybe I need to transcode to a mezzanine codec to improve it. But haven't done it yet. Thanks again for this video.
Very good job explaining your motivations. The only issue I will want to add is that Adobe is not progressing as fast because Premier is basically a mature program. Also is important to have into account stuff like stability (vs premier) etc. I do use FCPx so I am not saying Davinci is more unstable, just that it was missing from the video.
Yeah, I can easily see that. Final Cut Pro is definitely a solid tool (I have tried it limited amounts as paying $299 for two separate video editors seems a little overkill haha). I just honestly have really started to love working all in one program but again, that is just me. I love the little details that Davinci packed in with a denoiser, the ability to do basic tracking, and much more. And as you heard, the COLOR that Resolve has... I practically want to pet my screen it is so incredible haha! I am sure you can relate :)
i too use FCP & DR14. I was a PP user but the performance was so terrible and i was tired of waiting ages for renders to happen. I use DR14 for as much as i can and then where i need i use FCP as there are just so many plugins for it. However i think it will get less as more plugins for DR14 get released.
my macbook pro from 2012 was unusable on version 12/12.5. I have a desktop rig, but it makes me wonder if I should re download it for the macbook pro and give 14 a try if I'm on the road or something, and don't want to wait to post.
Has anyone found a full keyboard shortcut list for Resolve 14? I can't seem to find one? I found a few with limited amount of shortcuts but I feel there has to be something directly from Davinci with all the shortcuts. I know there is a way to search within Resolve but I always like to print out a sheet and just read through the shortcuts. If anyone has a link to ALL the keyboard commands for Resolve 14 I would appreciate it. I am making the switch from Premiere myself because of the color workflow and playback i love it soo buttery smooth.!
I use FCPX. I've really wanted to switch to Da Vinci but the multicam editing has really let me down. I tried synching 2 cameras with 3 audio tracks and it kept failing to synch. I have no issues in FCP to synch the same material. I also cannot bring in a pluraleyes multicam synched xml into Da Vinci
As an audio engineer and basic video editor, I am amazed by the Fairlight audio engine, it has nothing to envy Protools or any other DAW. I just learned Premiere Pro but now switching to Davinci, hopefully, it will stay Free and lifetime license.
I must say that as someone who doesn't get to play much with video the price for Adobe was not there (just crack it comes to mind) but these folk gave more tools than I use for the free version whic I'm totally impressed with. I've looked at some other editors and I cannot stand how most layout, for some reason with the way my brain works I *NEED* to work with timeline style and this gave me that without the bullshit cost that I couldn't justify as a few times a year sort of person. Once I get a few other projects out of the road I wouldn't mind getting more in depth with adjusting colour and many other settings you've covered here that I wouldn't normally know about or touch and the way they've done their product I can do that (slowly catch up). So I have to say they have my thumbs up (I dumped EVERYTHING adobe that isn't a plain runtime) and I'd put their name in for anyone doing anything with video editing. $4$/feature 4 feature (even with a paid sub) this smashes Adobe for 80%+ of the user base IMO.
I may be sold on 15 because I’m a editor/animator/3D artist. I’m very attracted to the all-in-one and am not a Premiere Pro fan. However I have a ton of AE plugins and scripts that make working between them great. Element 3D’s ability to bring in my Maya made models easily increases its value. I say all of that because even with Davinci, I would still have to roundtrip to AE. And every once in a while I do use the buggy Direct Link from PP to AE. But I want to give version 15 a true chance and use it for a full project as a test. The huge issue for me would be group workflow. If I’m away, and someone needs to modify my work, would this be an issue? No one I know uses this. I’d have to export it as an xml or something to work in Premiere, right?
Right, for what exactly? If you know how to use Divinci you probably won't need any plugins. However, you can buy some LUTS and many available for FREE - and that's pretty great. Can make your own. Possibilities are endless. I haven't used Adobe PP since DaVinci Resolve 9. Fantastic workflow and so powerfull. Plus I own two Blackmagic Cameras as well, BMCC and BMPCC and got the Resolve Suite license dongle for free from Blackmagic!
DaVinci has OFX support built in, even the free version. OFX being the more commonly used type of plugin in the industry. Both Nuke and Fusion (two compositing giants, both trample on After Effects in the industry) use it. And smaller software like Hitfilm and Vegas also have all their plugins in OFX. So if you bought one OFX plugin for one, you can use it in another.
I am planning to use Davanci Resolve 15 on macbook pro 15 with 4gb graphics (2017). Do you think i can edit 4k video smoothly by using macbook pro 15 (2017). I am asking heard that davinci resolve requires high end graphics to edit 4k videos.
Ive just started exploring Resolve and I love it. I understand what you say about Premiere Pro. It's great but for some reason it just feels like a chore sometimes. I'm excited to really dive in and explore Resolve. I think the biggest thing is remapping the keys to what I had in PP, because I had some freaky weird set ups in there lol
Thanks for a great video. I’ve been looking for an alternative to PP for sometime now and you’ve convinced me. I have to say that my primary motivation was Adobe’s subscription plan. Outrageous corporate greed .
How do you handle the alpha issues for the Compound Clip? I'm thinking of switching to DV. However, everything I put two clips that has transparency, I get black screen and the alpha i gone. 🤔
Now that Resolve is making the Fusion page even more robust there is no need to use that Dynanic Link feature in Premiere Pro. On the flip side of the coin After Effects is better suited for 2D motion graphics. Granted, there is Motion on the Apple side but there are no expressions. Layers will have their place but nodes are so fun to work with.
Thanks for the video. I definitely agree with you with most points. One problem I have with Davinci Resolve was the plugin support. I use a lot of plugins and a lot of the plugins I use for paid work is not supported by this editor. But the color grading/correcting is definitely heaps better vs Premiere.
I like to color grade, and as much as I find some of the plug ins for Premier good for grading, problem is when you need to do it to more than one clip. Compared to dedicated color grading interface and features in Resolve, its hard to argue against it. As someone said, the Blackmagic is updating their editing tab faster than Adobe is updating their color grading tab. So for now. I'm in the process of switching from Premiere to Resolve. Especially with latest version 14 release. For audio I switched form Adobe Audio to iZotope RX6 for clean up of audio. So I don't miss the dynmic link that much.
Man I love iZotope's software. I was introduced to them via the Ozone series. Do you have the standard RX6 or the Advanced? Was curious on using that for some of my clean-ups (music wise).
Kudos. hehe. I love iZozope too. Excellent company. Simple to use and intuitive but super powerful. Not cheap, but worth it. I use RX6 Advance BTW. I had to do all kinds of dialog repairing and clean up and I had trouble with Adobe Audition, and Resolve audio tools. so I searched for something else. Everyone recommended the iZotope RX6 Advance. I tried it and never looked back. The "Dialog Isolate" module that can analyze the audio and extract only the dialog with no echo, clicks or background noise, by using machine learning and AI sophisticated algorithms, wow. Just wow. Two clicks and does the impossible. Mind blown. Now I can't imagine not using it hehe. :) Also other stuff like de-click, de-ess, and use of other plug-ins, made it really an indiscipline tool for me. Even things like rustle from the lav mic rubbing against the clothing is now easy one click fix. I think they did the Game of Thrones on it too. They shoot in Industrial zone, near the highway and had to make the dialog sound nice and crisp, with no distractions or sound that would ruin the show, and they made a video about how they did it with iZotope RX6 Advance software. If its good enough for them, its good for me too. :)
Davinci Resolve, to me, is like Propellerhead's Reason, serious power in one easy to use tool. I would add a 6th point, which is that unlike some Adobe tools, Davinci is a neat install too, there aren't a whole bunch of auxiliary apps. When you uninstall it cleanly uninstalled. The project database is easily exported so if you upgrading or moving to another machine, it's very easy to do without fear of losing some custom configuration.
Hmm... Not quite sure. Is it possible you downloaded 'postgresSQL' from another source that isn't Davinci Resolve? That might be an issue. Kinda shooting in the dark with this one though.
Smart move, sir! With the 15 version, you will fall in love even more. Actually, Davinci is more than just NLE, so it is more than Premiere for less money.
I've always loved Premiere, but eager to try out Davinci Resolve. Unfortunately, it's hanging in the startup screen on my 2010 17" MacBook Pro :-( How do I troubleshoot that? It starts up just fine on my 2013 13" MBP, but would really like to get it working on the larger one...
Being totally honest, with how much hardware resources resolve uses now, it makes sense that it would struggle on your older MacBook Pro. I'm really sorry. Resolve loves it's GPU / CPU power and utilizes it as much as it can.
Paper Krane, thanks for your quick reply. I’ll try it out on the other Mac first then. That machine is not exactly a powerhouse either, so curious to see how far I get with it. Dreading having to buy a new laptop - they’re so expensive these days!
I am fed up w PP 2019. Using PP for 8 years and the latest is a complete breaking of HLG 2020 support. Learning Davinci 15.2. Q how do I time scrub like in PP?
I would welcome smoother playback and rendering. Is rendering fast? But I would have a really hard time I think giving up instant AE access from premiere. You can't simply replace AE with an editor. It's a mammoth program that out weighs the basics of any editor 100 fold and the seamless timeline swapping is invaluable.
This is true but for an AE alternative Blackmagic Design (the creators of Resolve) have their own compositor! It is called Fusion 9 that also comes with a free version that is fully featured. It is node based as well but it has all of the same tools (save a few which is for their paid version like VR tools etc.) As for rendering, it is indeed super fast. :) Go ahead and give it a shot! As a previous comment pointed out, the free version on Resolve 14 allows for 4k rendering now!
Davinci Resolve Studio for the win - thanks for posting this. I've been incredibly frustrated by Premiere Pro and the new 2018 release is the final nail in the coffin for me. It has taken me less time to get Resolve up and running that it was taking Premiere to load in my footage. Absolutely no customer service for adobe video users. Very stoked to get going with Resolve so thanks for the vids!
Yeah. I was going through all of their programs 2018 updates, and it really made me question where Adobe is placing all of the money they are making from subscriptions. I have really fallen in love with Resolve and the flexibility with color is incredible. I feel like I am actually spending more time creating then looking for the right effect to apply. Just me though. ;)
I had 6k footage from a Red at 7:1 compression - all Premiere did was create copies and endless .pek files, hang or crash. Absolutely no issue with Resolve and the color correction and delivery pages are so easy to use.
just getting into editing and i can clearly see what you mean about Premiere pro . I went for Final cut , but after watching this think I'll definitely try Davinci. As to the question of linearity . The real world is dialectical, and although we present it linearly we approach it dialectically in our best thinking of it, and this should be reflected in software....anything clunky is a no no , it just 'hasn't got it' . just a thought .
I was considering the same jump, coming from FCPX, but the color correction was really lacking.... but now. FCPX 10.4 I have few reason to leave FCPX anymore for normal projects.
Now while they do not have a direct bridge to After Effects, they do have their own 3d compositing software called 'Fusion' that they do have a direct bridge to called 'Fusion Connect'. Like resolve, Fusion is a node based system an will easily allow you to create the same effects you can in After Effects.
See ya!
what does Plugin mean???
Did Adobe's supscription model make you give it up?
I'm using premiere pro because I had to sell my macbook.
it's been hell.
C'mon.
I've spent at least a week editing a video that could've been 8 hours tops using something like final cut pro not knowing a thing prior.
wow the premiere fanatic disappeared and now it looks like I'm dissing davinci resolve when actually I'm so excited for it.
Agree.
Vegas is great, I just wish the rendering was faster.
I'm gonna learn davinci resolve as it looks like a fun program.
In my opinion, after adding Fairlight, DaVinci Resolve can be considered a modern version of the old Final Cut Studio
Bonus reason: Adobe is like a turnpike without an off ramp. Resolve is one time payment.
The Elevator Daily isn't resolve free??
The Elevator Daily brilliant. Thanks!
We just quit Adobe Premiere as well. HDR is what we do and Resolve is the best software hands down. The addition od Fairlight is a plus.
And now in davinci resolve 15 you have fusion!!! Try it, you will love it.
To be fair I still find myself using the standalone version of Fusion because the integrated version is quite a bit more power hungry.
Marcellus have you tried the releas version yet, betas can sometimes be a bit unoptimized, tho BMD udualy does a giud job even with the betas
Bjarne Nilsson oh yes, I've downloaded the release version about 1 hour after it went up. The fusion part is still a little unstable but the rest is rock solid.
And now Fusion is built into Resolve
Adobe views its customers as cash cows who need to pony up money every month for the privilege of using their software. Blackmagic is willing to sell me a product that is mine to keep for a one time fee. The decision was easy.
so true
I think everyone tired of the nickle and dime. Car makers are wanting to do this to in the future to with driverless cars. I refuse.
What about graphics, titles and transitions that we can do in premiere pro? Can we do them in Da Vinci?
Not a big Adobe fan. Super expensive in the long run with major crashes and no service.
Not to mention a free version too!
Im suprised that resolve doesnt get as much press. Because in the film industry its pretty essential, especially for its amazing colour grading capabilities.
Never tell all your secrets
I’ve made the switch and I’m super happy with Resolve.
What system components are you using?
@@Hexspa I have an old i7 and a GTX740 and it works fine even with 4K
One more reason. It's available on Linux now. That's dope!
I've heard some issues with it, but the AUR version seems to work fine with some tweaks.
If you use the internet, thank a Linux machine!
Linux is dead ae? Gave me a good chuckle.
how is the rendering when your editing a 4k file, i have a beefy computer, so in premiere i have to render which doesnt take to long of time but can this render in a way to help my work flow? like how apple program renders everytime you leave the clip in the timeline
I feel you man. I dumped my Final Cut X for this program. So smooth. Make me enjoy editing and coloring grading again.
Yeah, I actually switched to Affinity Photo / Affinity Designer. I have canceled CC and honestly am loving the alternatives that are out there!
I have been using Premiere for the last decade and probably going to switch becuase of all the issues.
yeah bro u r right. this is the first video editing program i have seen that really understands a meaning of UX and workflow.
Okay, I feel you man. Adobe will be here with it's arms wide open if you wanna come back :/
The Post Color Blog if you want a photoshop alternative you can use Affinity photo.
Thanks Ben I'm downloading it right now. Looking forward to checking this out!
Moved to Vegas Pro 15 from Premier Pro, its been fantastic . Vegas' workflow is easy and powerful. Best decision we made.
playmusician I love Vegas, and I feel it gets too much hate nowadays.
What is the opinion with Avid Media Composer
I came here to look at other options too. I'm kinda tired of premiere and all the problems, and I can't afford a monthly subscription if im only using it for a 2 features a year.
Dropping premiere pro this week. I shoot on gh5 with 4K being at 3840x2160 at 60FPS so the free version works for me.
David Lopez he said it doesn't do 4k, is that not the case anymore? Looking for my first editing software and have 4k footage available.
#1 reason for me to use DaVinci Resolve: it works on Linux with full GPU acceleration. Premier etc. don't, so that was a complete show-stopper.
Check out the brand new Affinity Publisher!! The Beta version is out now!!
Affinity best man...
How about when your shooting music videos and need to sync all those files to audio
The version of Resolve in this video was 14 but recently, Davinci Resolve 15 beta was released and it has audio sync functionality that is far better then the audio sync in Resolve 14.
Ben Farnham that’s my biggest reason why I ha Ent went full davinci because I really need that. I wish plural eyes would work in davinci resolve.
May I please know how do I make my videos in 9:16 ration in the free davinci resolve 14?
....I am so happy, that I switched to Resolve.
Cheers!
Thank you. I am so over all the subscriptions and updates and the clutter . I found the resolve can’t wait to get started.
simply phenonal
Great video, thank you. I haven't worked with video in over ten years and wanted to get back into it. Downloading this now to give it a try!
++Super Huge Reason:
Adobe: You are "forced" to pay for the whole of their apps to get PP and AE, there is no plan!
Can you make an updated video fearuring master clip, ect... Speaking to the color grading features?
Thank you for this video! I was wanting another program for sometime now and you made some very compelling arguments in favor of Resolve. I will now be buying this software.. Thanks again
Thank you for the honest review. I just downloaded the free version of Resolve and I very much look forward to trying it out.
A few things : yes, Premiere effects/filters are trackable. And the free version of Resolve can export 4K, just not DCI 4K.
Oh goodness. You might have sold me. I got it on a whim and I'm really digging it. It feels much more intuitive. Thanks for this video!
I am a blunt person most of the time. Gotta be able to take it in order to dish it our right? It was well received, don't worry. :)
When I downloaded this program it opened up command prompt and said that it was deleting rules. Is this normal? Seems awfully sketchy to me.
You sold me on the tracking and color grading. I will have to give this a try!
I am very glad that you save my money
if your using resolve it wont out put pro res files , so what do you use to convert your files to pro res
Great perspective! Thanks for sharing!
im about to try some projects in resolve... just changing for a stand-alone software
For some reason I got no sound when I tried to play back my video on divinci
I'm guessing you're on Windows. You have to go into Windows Playback devices, and change the default playback format to 24-bit 48,000Hz.
...set windows sound to 48KHz...or try the newest version of Resolve....
I use final cut and davinci. Its really easy to use both. Export xml and then back again its great.
Yeah resolve is amazing for sure. I'm using it now for current job lol.
i too use FCP & DR14. I was a PP user but the performance was so terrible and i was tired of waiting ages for renders to happen. I use DR14 for as much as i can and then where i need i use FCP as there are just so many plugins for it. However i think it will get less as more plugins for DR14 get released.
We're is the free version?
Just found DaVinci this morning..... by this afternoon I am sold - Goodbye Premier Pro.
my macbook pro from 2012 was unusable on version 12/12.5.
Michael Meade strange... I've had no issues with plural eyes XML files in resolve
how can I play H.265 Gopro 6? i have to convert it and it loses quality
As an audio engineer and basic video editor, I am amazed by the Fairlight audio engine, it has nothing to envy Protools or any other DAW. I just learned Premiere Pro but now switching to Davinci, hopefully, it will stay Free and lifetime license.
When i go to render my multiple projects it renders the first idk why
Thank you for your review. I am also thinking about switching from premiere to another programme.
I use Davinci now and love it just needs more plugins
morpheus like what, for example?
Right, for what exactly? If you know how to use Divinci you probably won't need any plugins. However, you can buy some LUTS and many available for FREE - and that's pretty great. Can make your own. Possibilities are endless. I haven't used Adobe PP since DaVinci Resolve 9. Fantastic workflow and so powerfull. Plus I own two Blackmagic Cameras as well, BMCC and BMPCC and got the Resolve Suite license dongle for free from Blackmagic!
I'm a newbie so making titles n such but I just watched another UA-cam on how to make them so I'm good now
DaVinci has OFX support built in, even the free version.
Dude that was awesome! I m installing the trial to check it out
The main thing I've realized from working with the two softwares is that davinci may be a little slower in terms of real time playback
I actually noticed the opposite. Think it comes down to the workstation on that.
I am planning to use Davanci Resolve 15 on macbook pro 15 with 4gb graphics (2017). Do you think i can edit 4k video smoothly by using macbook pro 15 (2017). I am asking heard that davinci resolve requires high end graphics to edit 4k videos.
wt abt gpu and cpu supprt.?? ..render time Pr vs Dr...?? coz adobe 2018 no longer suport my nvid gtx 760..
You are so right. i use and love it since 2 month
How do you handle the alpha issues for the Compound Clip? I'm thinking of switching to DV. However, everything I put two clips that has transparency, I get black screen and the alpha i gone. 🤔
I have some strange problems. My timeline is at 30 fps and it shows as if it is, but it looks like it is only 10 frames per second
Thanks man. I was seriously considering hitfilm 4 and davinci. This video made me for sure want to try Davinci.
Sadly can't get Da Vinci to load . just get an error code .''postgresSQL not working or password incorrect'' ... do you have a solution??
Hmm... Not quite sure. Is it possible you downloaded 'postgresSQL' from another source that isn't Davinci Resolve? That might be an issue. Kinda shooting in the dark with this one though.
No . There seem to be some fixes but they are not clear as to how you go about it . Nothing on black magician either . real pain.
Smart move, sir! With the 15 version, you will fall in love even more. Actually, Davinci is more than just NLE, so it is more than Premiere for less money.
Im a convert now as well . Good video , thanks. Dv 15 is all i need
You're not kidding... new PC's and laptops are getting extremely crazy price wise. Wishing you the best of luck!
It is node based as well but it has all of the same tools (save a few which is for their paid version like VR tools etc.)
As for rendering, it is indeed super fast.
Ok you convinced me to test it further. Many thanks.
just getting into editing and i can clearly see what you mean about Premiere pro .
Does it also have some video effects? Thats what I am looking for.
You can now export in 4K in Resolve 15!
How good is Davinci at 4K proxy editing compared to Premiere Pro?
I was considering the same jump, coming from FCPX, but the color correction was really lacking.... but now. FCPX 10.4 I have few reason to leave FCPX anymore for normal projects.
can you do something like premieres "replace with after effects composition"?
Now while they do not have a direct bridge to After Effects, they do have their own 3d compositing software called 'Fusion' that they do have a direct bridge to called 'Fusion Connect'. Like resolve, Fusion is a node based system an will easily allow you to create the same effects you can in After Effects.
