Thanks for sharing.. Quito - or one of all the others.. Will let you know when I've roamed the country completely in a few years.. Maybe I'll just keep travelling around the country for the rest of my life - who knows 😊 Take care and, safe travelling onwards..
thanks for the interesting video 😊. Im from Germany and did a 1-year volunteer service in Quito when I was 19 and spent another 6 months in Ecuador last year, mostly in Riobamba, where I did a 3-month internship. I really fell in love with Riobamba, despite it not even being such a "popular" city among ecuadorians: however, it really has some hidden gems, like a splendid centro historico, maybe not quite as "polished" as the one in Cuenca and many beatiful places in the surrounding nature, like Laguna de Colta, El Altar volcanoes, a lot of indigenous culture within the city and even more in the many quiet and quite historic villages, like Guano, Cacha, Chambo, Licto, Cajabamba, San Juan. Riobamba itself has a population of around 130,000, with two universities that are both quite large and popular among students from different provinces of all over Ecuador, so it does have quite a bit of student life. Another thing I found really nice were the many cultural festivals like the "pases del niño" that take place from November to march and I have been told that Riobamba is THE place where these traditions are most preserved. One interesting fact is that the old town of Riobamba (located at Colta) was the first capital of the colonial district of what comprised present day Ecuador until it was changed to Quito a few years later. Finally, it was destroyed and buried by a massive earthslide, caused by an earthquake in 1797. After that, the new Riobamba was planned out from scratch at the current location: they took some of the remaining stones from the destroyed colonial town to build the new historic center. Especially in times where unfortunately even Quito is becoming more and more dangerous ( I miself got robbed at Parque Carolina this time), Riobamba could be an interesting, less well known alternative for people who maybe dont depend on a local employer, or who want to teach english. Or also people who like smaller cities but want to escape the Cuenca expat bubble. Other cities that might be interesting and that offer a decent quality of life for foreigners in my opinion are the following: - Otavalo - Tena and Puyo - Loja - maybe (Ibarra) Lets hope the current situation in Ecuador improves soon! Its such a shame that this country which feels like my second home and where I wish to settle down one day has evolved this way.
I'm an American immigrant now living in Cuenca, Ecuador. For those that like the 70-75 degree year-round weather and an even better cost of living, (and art, music, and food - world-class food and chocolate), Cuenca might be another city to explore.
As an Ecuadorian I feel the need to thank you for having my country in such a high regard and to spread and to show the world how good this little piece of land is.. Have a nice stay here.
Lindo de veros en el país natal de mi familia. i spent all of October in Manta; almost didn't get on the plane to fly home to Southern California. the other night i decided to check the weather on my computer, both here locally and in Manta... 38 F here and at 2 AM in Manta? 72 F. i'll be back down there for a couple of weeks in March and another couple of weeks in around August. hopefully, the Universe Willing, i'll be signing a 1 year Lease in January 2024 as a Temporary Resident. Thank You Both for highlighting the city of Manta. i also feel it's on the verge of becoming the "Next Best Thing". Me Encanta, Manta. You Will Too!
We moved to Cotacachi last month and LOVE it. We are digital nomads--not quite of retirement age, yet and we love the peace and quiet of this town, the hiking opportunities, the friendliness of the locals and how close it is to Quito (if we get the urge for city life). Great video!
I always love your videos, lots of good information. One of the new things I've learned is the concept of "Slow travel" that's always been my ideal. if I can only be in a place for 2 weeks, I want to enjoy every minute, get to know it, absorb the vibe, the culture and the rhythm of the place.
Great video and I am an active retiree. Ecuador is on my list. Now I think I will visit Quito and Cuenca along with Manta. Now I understand why there are no direct flights into Manta from my home state. I am heading to Colombia first then Ecuador from there. That seems to be the easiest way I have seen
We just returned from Ecuador a few weeks ago...we plan to retire there...our top 3 cites are: San Clemente, Crucita and Playas! We took 4 other people with us and they also decided to retire in Ecuador. Their list consists of: Olon, Montanita and Playa Blanca. Love your channel!
Theadine thanks for sharing. Did your group use a tour guide? I am trying to plan for a small group next year any advice you can give would be appreciated.

Totally agree with your take on Cuenca. We have been here since Nov. 9, and it is perfect for families. We have two daughters and it's almost a daily routine to take them to the park. I will mention that in certain parts, the sidewalks are unfinished/broken, so for young families like us, I'd recommend not using a stroller and using a papoose of some kind.
Great video! I plan on starting in Manta to give myself time to relax and restore for a while. I'd like to visit Quito, but that altitude scares me. I'll provably brave it because I've heard such good things about the city. And I know at some point I'm going to get bored in Manta. Cuenca sounds wonderful, except for the cool weather. And Cotacachi, yeah, I need to visit to check out the leather goods. Thanks for the insight.
Great video you guys! As a local, I think you read those four cities quite precisely! Being Ecuador a relatively small country, it is very easy to travel around and in a short span of time get the feeling of which place works better for anybody!

Thank you for your take on the cities in Ecuador. I really trust your judgment. One city that I’m really curious about is Loja; would really like to get your take on that city as well. Thanks for your insight!
We have been in Loja for a month. The city is very peaceful and it feels safer than bigger cities like Cuenca or Quito. The people here are very friendly, however very little people speak English, so learning Spanish is definitely a plus. Most of the expats live in Vilcabamba, which is 45 min away by car. The weather is perfect. It's not too cold not too hot( between 40's-70s). There are very limited international food options, you will find more local BBQ places, a few Peruvian sea food restaurants and a few Italian restaurants. No shopping malls, just a few supermarkets to get food( one Supermaxi and one Gran Aki). It has more like a developed laid back town vibe. Rental options are limited, you will find less furnished places and less Airbnb options. Internet can be choppy. We are currently living in "Barrio Amable María", located in the north of Loja. It is a residential place a little far from the city center, but the properties around here are very modern and well kept. Hope this helps! ✌️
I would say Manta wins over Salinas, Portoviejo is a gut choice as well and cheaper than Manta. Olon, Bahía y Canoa are gut options too. I woulnot go to Guayaquil. Quito, yes, Carolina, La Coruña, Bellavista mis barrios favoritos. Finally Cuenca y Loja: gut options.
I am thoroughly enjoying the vicarious travel through your videos as well as the ongoing anticipation of your next destination. Rondelle (spelling?), you mentioned good and bad upload and download internet speeds. I'm not familiar with the numbers for this. What would you consider to be good?

lol thanks. We met at a work conference in NOLA! We had a ton in common....including traveling...we "took off" from there! 😆
The micro :)
Love the micro weather patterns here.

Dude you're killing me. Stop pronouncing Quito like Cheeto!
OMG didn't mean to kill anyone 😂😂😂 not that serious, but I will try to keep it in mind.
Great video. What about Salinas? I will spend a month there as a digital nomad and with my wife and 1 year old son.
We didn't care for Salinas too much...apart from a great middle eastern restaurant. While we were there there was lots of petty crime and you had to really watch your back.
Thanks!
Gracias!!!
