Just made this. Very useful and straightforward! Note-- if you do not have a reversible zipper, then in the first steps when you adhere the zipper to the outer fabric, make sure the zipper teeth face DOWN into the outer material
Just discovered this video yesterday. This was by far the best and easiest tutorial on UA-cam. I made mine out of leather, was a little harder and everything hand stitched, but it turned out so good! it looks like it’s bought from a high end store. Thanks again sir, I followed everything to a “T” and I was not disappointed. 👌🏾 I appreciate you posting this video. I will probably buy one of your dopp bags just to support, because I was so astounded somebody actually put up a free tutorial and didn’t try make money from it. You the real MVP John Crane.
I’ve just started sewing and I found this video very inspiring. Thank you for making this and keeping up over these years. I hope you and your cat are doing well.
I absolutely love making this bag! I made 2 of them a few years ago for my older boys who were going away to work at summer camp for the summer, and today I came back to your video and made one for my third son going away to work at the same camp for the summer. Thank you for the clear instructions that I could easily follow along with.
Thank you Jon for you time and effort showing us your skills. Just made a bag on my LSZ-1 for my daughter. Turned out great. I’m determined to up my skill level and this was a good step for me. Note you didn’t leave out any instructions. 😁
Right On Paul! 🙌✨ Thanks for watching and thanks for your nice comment! I appreciate the feedback. That is great that you made some bags and are sewing away! The sky is the limit! I’m working on a big sewing project just now. I’ll release a video in the coming months when it’s done.
I just purchased a ripstop by the roll dopp kit and randomly came across this and it's such a wonderful guide, and strangely satisfying. I think you've convinced me to add a nicer liner to my bag once it get's here. Great video!
From 🇨🇦 thank you, bought a sewing machine, never sewed before; I'm on a rookie on a learning curve and you shortened it. Great demonstration....beautiful shop.

An in-depth tutorial. I made one as my first Doop bag,. It looks great and has had compliments. Look at Vids that do this style of bag and don't have raw seams on the inside. Genuinely appreciate your tutorial. Blue and Green should never be seen., though. You're a very talented Gentleman.
I should be commenting on the bag itself but I am always just mesmerized by the sewing machine! Oh how I dream of owning such a fantastic machine someday!!!
I think you misspoke on the corner cuts......your 2" long ways and 1 1/2" short way. Your tutorial, the bag is awesome. thank you......just watched it again for the 5th time, I think you stated it correctly as a man thinks, not so much for us ladies.....loln I was wrong., thanks again.
Awesome, that is the most detailed demonstration of making these kind of bags. But the question I am still looking for an answer is this How do you decide the dimension (length x width) of the fabric if you want the finished bag to be of a certain dimension/size? Is there an easy formula to calculate the fabric (Length x Width)
Thanks Jon, Very helpful video. Truly appreciate you sharing your skills to help us hacks learn from professionals. Used your pattern and upscaled it to 24"x18" for a larger bag with a zipper pocket on the side. I didn't know where to start and your video was a basis for my new bag. I took me three trys, but each was a learning experience. Many, many thanks to you!
Such a great bag! Thank you Jon for taking the time to explain everything to the point. I especially like the way you insert the zipper. And your tools are great.
Wen Model 100 Soldering Gun.......I have one too, I think mine might be even older than yours, it has slotted screws holding the case together whereas yours has Philips and my trigger seems to be a darker burgundy..........As long as you don't run them over or something I think they last forever. Outstanding Quality Bags, you make it look easy....I suspect it would take me a week.
Hey! Right On! 🙌 Thanks for subscribing and for dropping a comment. I appreciate it. I’m working on lots of great content! Lots of projects out of my shop.
I am pretty handy & crafty. think I will try to make a “hot knife” like you made. You made it took so easy. The hard thing may be finding the heat gun. I found some blades on Amazon.I have one of the straight type of irons- a curling iron shape. Would I be able to use that or do I need the gun that has 2 rod ends?
Nice Jon-san, Super cool little bags - I got one of those Hudson Bay bags from you and very well made. Something custom and handmade from a good buddy... and a bunch of my drum / music students also have bought some of those bags as well - they all love them! Thanks for sharing how you make them in this video, but also thanks for making a bunch that we all can just buy them ready made. Right On Jon-san!
Nice video. Just a word of advice. Keep an eye on that stamp. You really should grind the mushrooming off where you hit it with the hammer. Otherwise eventually a piece will break off, usually at very high speed, like a bullet.
Very true! That does need a trim. It got a lot of use stamping over 400 steel bunk bed parts I did for a big job. Hasn’t gotten touch up in a while. And come to think of it, I’ll cut that whole handle off and weld on a new solid bar. The piece on there now is hollow. It was just what I had around in the scrap bin when I made it. Thanks for watching!
Right On! 🙌 Thanks! I’ve got some more sewing videos coming out soon. I did one last week on a serger overlock machine. I have some videos coming out about making a few different bags.
Hi Jon, thanks for all of your videos. Much appreciated! Regarding your DOPP kit, would you be able to show us how to make it so the zipper stops just short of wrapping down the ends of the bag? Ive looked all over youtube for a rectangle bag with zipper stops . vs a zipper running all the way down to the seams in the end of the bag. thanks
Great tutorial! I am just learning how to make these bags. I love them to keep around the house to store small things in. My question is: with this pattern do you have raw edges on the inside when the bag is finished?
Right on Jon! Really nice craftsmanship on those bags. You are very talented and have the right tools to do the job. Looks like you are enjoying the new shop. Happy thanksgiving! 🇺🇸 Roger
Great tutorial! Only question I have is with the zipper? Did you initially put it on the right side of the fabric on the wrong side of the zipper. I made a bag but the zipper ended up with the teeth down. Still works but want to make another the correct way. Thanks again, great video.
Right On! 🙌Thanks for watching! It all depends on the zipper. Some have a top and bottom and some can go either way. If the teeth have a direction the bottom should out before sewing. Then flip the bag inside out. It is nice to get those two way zipper then there is no worries. Hope that helps!
I am just a few minutes into this video and I have never seen your videos before and you just took the zipper pull off of the zipper and now I am a little horrified and also fascinated to see how you resolve this fatal dilemma. I know it must be resolvable, but I don’t know how. I am going to be making one of these bags for my husband and I’m planning on using denim from a pair of jeans that I made him give me after he ripped them in an unfortunate area that was not repairable. I already used the top part to make myself a skirt so we’ll see how the rest of this goes.
Right On! 👍 Thanks. Yes it’s been great to have this machine running slow and strong 💪 Great for leather and detail work. Can still move pretty fast too.

Hello Jon: I have a question if I may. I noticed your corners are a bit rectangle, any reason for this step? Wish I had a space like yours for crafts !LOL BTW I love that knot. Thanks for the video.
Right On! 👍✨ Glad you like the video and the knot! Yes I like those corners but feel free to sew the corners on an angle if that looks good on your bag! Always fun to change it up! 🙌
#1. Use a roller to apply double sided tape. It will stick better. #2. When sewing over the handles and pulls take piece of material folded over twice and sew a box “x” making a ramp so your walking can and put it under the rear of the walking foot (lifting the walking foot)and you will be able to sew those bulky areas and when coming down slip it under the toe of the walking foot and keep it moving towards you. But be careful you don’t sew your ramp to the project.
I made this as my first sewing project. Used upcycled materials I had around the house. Turned out great. Thanks!

Thank you kindly!! Yes this would be a great present. I have lots of them loaded with tools.
Best sewing video I’ve watched yet. Thank you for this sir.

Great job Jon! I’m going to adapt it to use with vinyl and quilt fabric and these instructions are so very clear and easy to follow. Thanks!
That is awesome to hear! 🙌✨ I would love to see some pics of it! 👍✨

Great tutorial! My zipper ended up being directional, so my liner is now my outside. Ah well, haha.
great job Jon, you taught me how to flip the bag to the other side of the needle to get that double stitch for extra strength.
Right on Don!👍🏼 Thats great that you are making a bag! Hope my tutorial is nice and clear. 😃
Amazing video and great instructions! I’ve watched a whole lot of bag tutorials on UA-cam and this is by far the best
Thank you! Such an efficient teacher & workspace!
Right On! Thanks Erica! 🙌☘️✨
Great tutorial! Thank you. Only one suggestion- I usually backstitch over the zipper as well as that is a stress point.
Man, there are some nice gadgets in this video! ❤
Awesome, that is the most detailed demonstration of making these kind of bags. But the question I am still looking for an answer is this

@@RightOnJonCrane You should consider doing a video tour of your shop! It looks amazing.

Great teaching video Jon. Is there a ratioor equation for size change? And does the corner cut outs need to change based on width & height? Thanks 🙏
Same question here!
Awesome video. Thank you
Amazing!!
Could you please tell me what kind of zipper did you use?
Right On! 🙌 Thanks 😊 I believe it is a YKK #10. Can be purchased from sailright
Thanks for this video tutorial.
Great tutorial! I am just learning how to make these bags. I love them to keep around the house to store small things in. My question is: with this pattern do you have raw edges on the inside when the bag is finished?
I believe he does, but the hot knife seals them so they don't unravel. Of course you could always add binding to cover the edges and fancy it up.
Right on Jon! Really nice craftsmanship on those bags. You are very talented and have the right tools to do the job. Looks like you are enjoying the new shop. Happy thanksgiving! 🇺🇸 Roger

I was wondering how you got that 206 to stitch so slow then I saw the Jack shaft reduction. Great video. Thanks :)
Right On! 👍 Thanks. Yes it’s been great to have this machine running slow and strong 💪
Great for leather and detail work. Can still move pretty fast too.
I want to make this style bag but bigger. I’m a lineman and we have rubber sleeve and glove bags. I’d like to make custom ones. 30” long 14” wide
This bag would be easy to change the dimensions. Would make a great bag for your gloves!!
Jon, what needle size are you using with the Sunbrella fabric and the 135 size thread?
good day Mr. Crane, i just happened to watch your video on bag making, is it alright if i ask how much does it cost for a tool bag..if you dont mind me asking…? thank you, Sir..
Great instruction on the bag, and I love your vest! I'd love to find a pattern for that.
Very nice clase I have a question if I want a bag finish size 15L x8W x7H what will be the started measurement to get this size? Thank you for your help John
Hi Nohora 😃 I will have to look at my pattern and make some calculations. I know the pattern in the video makes a bag that is 10x5x41/2 tall. I’ll check the pattern and get back to you. Thanks for watching 👍✨

Do you think waxed canvas will be ok for the outside and waterproof canvas for the inside? Thanks for the video
Yes that is certainly a combination that would work. I like waxed canvas. Some waxed canvas can be a little sticky at first. Can collect dust. All depends where you will use it. Thanks for watching and your feedback! Right On! 🙌
@@RightOnJonCrane thank you 😊
I noticed several questions about zipper placement, I wasn’t clear whether the zip teeth were placed facing up on the outer fabric. Zip teeth are always placed down toward the outside of the fabric so that when it’s sewn and flipped, the teeth are up and the outside of fabric is up.
What direction did you put the zipper teeth when taping it down to the first panel?
Nice!
Right On! 🙌Thanks Chet!
Hello Jon: I have a question if I may. I noticed your corners are a bit rectangle, any reason for this step? Wish I had a space like yours for crafts !LOL BTW I love that knot. Thanks for the video.

This is pretty cool!
What’s the dimensions of the finished bag?
