Update: We mentioned the Melbourne Airport Rail Link timeline incorrectly in the video. The project is currently expected to open in 2033. While we strive to provide the most accurate information, it’s worth noting that the Victoria’s Big Build website has not yet updated this new timeline. Thank you for your understanding, and we appreciate your support!
Construction was paused in May 2023 due to a federal infrastructure funding review, delaying the project to 2033. This timeline hasn’t been updated on the Airport Rail website.
@@TransportTheory The delay was caused by the STATE GOVERNMENT, once t4eh airport caved in regarding the airport station, the project could have proceeded, but the last STATE budget put a 4 year hole on the project (As the cannot afford it anymore)
I started working on the Victorian Railways in 1969 in 1971 there were plans to have a Airport Railway line as there was no houses in the route to the Airport
The SRL and Airport rail are 2 separate projects, always have been always will, the SRL will run standard(?) gauge driverless rolling stock, where the Airport line is a branch of the Sunbury line running HCMT's. as for either project getting off the ground, we will see east coast high speed rail before either of these projects are completed.
Brisbane and Sydney have had rail links to their airports for years, Perth now also has one. Melbourne is years behind in this. Tullamarine is the most difficult airport to reach from the city of any Australian Capital.
I know right.Conxion buses charge a minimum of $88 return for the trip from Airport to Hotel if you are a Tourist,I wouldn't have a clue what a Limo charges and I don't do Ride shares as they are crap and the drivers are dodgy. In Adelaide you can get on for not much more than a large cup of coffee onto a J1 OR J2 bus in or out of town on 15 to 30 minute intervals based on full fares but concession is cheaper.
Er, construction is currently paused as far as I know and the airport line is separate to the Suburban Rail Loop, not part of it. Although this is unclear as I don't know if they've even drawn up any plans for the northern and western parts of the loop yet At this stage, construction is paused on this project and no progress has been happening for months now, but please correct me if this is not the case
Thanks for your comment! Just to clarify, the Melbourne Airport Rail Link (or SRL Airport) is indeed a key part of the Suburban Rail Loop project. However, construction was paused in May 2023 due to a federal infrastructure funding review, delaying the project to 2033. As mentioned in our description, this timeline hasn’t been updated on the Airport Rail website. We’ll keep an eye out for further updates-thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@@TransportTheory how can the SRL and Airport rail be connected, they have different purposes, the SRL is orbital, where the Airport Rail is meant to link the CBD with the airport, "NO TRAIN CHANGES" the state government linked them for marketing purposes at the last election to make the SRL more palitable, as the Airport rail has massive sup[port where the SRL support is moderate at best.
@@WanderingBabs Yea the Airport link is supposed to link the airport to the CBD via Sunshine, it is not a direct path nor a relatively direct path it goes out west towards sunshine before coming back in on the existing lines to the CBD, its about as orbital as the rest of the SRL. @@mrtensed No alignment was going to be direct, it as either through Sunshine (where is can interface with the4 RRL), or Broadmeadows. the airport link is and has always been a branch off the Sunbury line at Albion, entering the city via MM1
How is it that Melbourne is so slow in anything remotely related to construction? Pushing back on opening dates and budget blowouts are key to all rail and infrastructure projects in Melbourne. While Sydney is planning on opening a brand new airport in 2026 with a metro line connected. Make it make sense.
I absolutely love visiting Melbourne from my home in Sydney but your commute is such a painful start to things. 😢 I'd rather fly into Avalon and rent a car, but then I'm more car dependent and blowing out my costs. Once in the CBD or inner city, the public transport is a dream but any further afield and you're car dependent again, fighting ever increasing traffic on the freeways. In Sydney by comparison, you can hop a train from the airport to Circular Quay, hop straight on a 15 or 30 minute ferry to Manly and find amazing accommodation within a short walk or a quick bus or Uber trip for a fraction of the CBD costs. Greater Sydney is much more doable cheaply on good public transport, and as a result gets more visitors spreading wealth across the city.
it is going to be absolutely useless for the Ballarat line unless Vline matches the frequency e.g. 10 mins frequency to Sunshine from the airport is good. But one gets to Sunshine, and imagine if you have to wait for 20-30 mins for a VLine to go to Geelong or Ballarat. Unless the separate VLine to have dedicated tracks and have proper express while run Metro services on its own track upto Melton, this is an absolute fail and another example of how allllllll projects are about suburbs not the regional towns. !!!
that's close to a decade away.To put this into perspective Hong Kong had an airport line since 1998 after it was moved to Lantau Island Chek Lap Kok.Kuala Lumpur has had theirs to town since about the same time and Singapore is way more recent but it gets people into the city.If this was Beijing we would have had such a link done in like the next year or two.

we have been waiting for a train from Melbourne airport to the city since 1970.

Imagine Melbourne catching up to Perth
Victoria is now broke. This link will be now built in 2133
People on the Craigieburn line will still drive or catch a taxi its much quicker than travelling into the City then back out again.
or catch a 901 from Broadie?
I would like the SRL to be built but the Opposition is just itching to cancel as soon as they get in. (hopefully ten years or so)
