Played this for the first time in an arcade when I was 10 with my dad. He said he didn't let me win, but I know better. He kicked ass at this game. What a fond memory you brought back to me because of this vid. Thanks Patman
I can still remember begging my parents for quarters to play the original Super Off-Road machine that was located in the lobby of Phar Mor at the Village Shopping Center in Davenport, IA! If we were lucky enough to catch my dad on a good day he would play my sister & I in a game or to of it and let our mom go shopping. Good times!
This game was the only arcade at our Seven Eleven back in the day! i played this game after school for years! A school office clerk would pay me each day $5 in cash for an hours work & give me her special bus pass they handed to teachers to get a free ride home if needed & she obviously didn't need it. With my 5 bucks I'd get a 2 dollar Hot Dog & 3 dollars in quarters & play Off Road! Then use the bus pass to ride home when i was flat broke as that game took all my quarters! Good Times!
there was really something special about the way this game felt. When you got gud and could whip that infinitely spinning wheel around and stop it at just the right time to make a tight turn and come out straight, it was so satisfying. Too bad about the microtransactions and eventual cheap AI, but playing against real people with gentlemanly rules makes for one hell of a game.
This was my favorite game at the bowling alley. The wheel response, the rush and the money really made me feel like I was winning and not wasting quarters. It was FUN! It seemed fair once you got nitros and could blast to the finish line last lap! I love this arcade cabinet and wish I had one. Thank you sir for the awesome doc
This game was played for MANY hours by my friends and I in our youth. It was the reason a couple friends had the NES 4 Score, just so we could all play it at the same time. I was always a fan of the NES soundtrack, too.
While I only played the arcade machine a handful of times due to limited funds, I spent many hours enjoying the NES version. Earning upgrades to my truck's performance proved quite addictive.
9:01 fun fact. The literal translation here for Huevos Grande is Big Eggs, but applying a bit of double entendre, it also translates to Big Balls. Which I'm convinced the programers were aware of this and they named it anyways, which I find kind of hilarious. If only the parents of the kids playing this knew ... And as I turns out, I paused this video halfways and I scoured playthrough videos because this game looked familiar to me. Turns out I had played Super Off-road for SNES many years ago. Me and my brother had gotten the system back in 97 when it was already getting discontinued and afterwards we went to a local flea market where we actually picked this one up for about $5 along with a Brett Hull hockey game, Super Mario World, and a Ninja Turtles game. And I recall this being pretty entertaining, but unfortunately for it, our console came bundled with Killer Instinct, so it didn't get the attention it deserved.
Great job as always Pat! I've always loved racing games myself. We had an old 73 Monte Carlo in the garage, that didn't run, back in the day. I was about 11 or 12. I used to sit in it behind the wheel, and pretend I was driving lol. Good times, good times!
17:10 17:41 21:56 And Yes I Don't Want to Forgot Two Super Off Road Game's One for Nintendo Entertainment System and the Other One Also on Super Nintendo Entertainment System too that SNES Was Awesome 👍👍.
I remember playing this game with my brother back in '89(I believe). But I don't recall ever seeing the extra tracks arcade version, so this is new for news to me. I also remember playing the amazing, yet limited NES version at home since I had the 4 player attachment at home. I also had the MSDOS version and later on the SNES version. Even though I had a c64, I never played that version. Does anybody know if there is like a MOD version of the arcade game for MAME? I am thinking about connecting my ps5 controllers on my Android TV to challenge my kids on Sidewinder or Wipeout and show them who's the boss.
This is the most played driving game in my collection when we have company. Outrun, Super Sprint and Race Drivin' are second, third, and fourth most popular at home. The Track Pack is an absolute must have for this machine
Yeah, this game was EVERYWHERE back in the day. For a couple of years there you couldn’t go into an arcade, pizza parlor, or bowling alley without seeing one. Never one of my top top favorites but always fun to pop a couple quarters in while you waited for the pizza to finish baking. I never bought any of the home versions but I remember renting the NES cart once when I had some friends coming over for a birthday party, since I owned a Satellite. It’d be great to get a video on the Sprint series sometime in the future too. I played a bunch of Championship Sprint growing up because there was one very close to my house for years and it was another easy “pick up and play” game. A few years ago at one of the classic arcade expos I attended someone actually brought in a huge Sprint 8 machine from the 1970s. If you thought playing one of these overhead racers with four simultaneous players was wild, try it with eight simultaneous players sometime - that was a total blast!
I had forgotten all about this game. I remember trying it, but I had trouble steering the car with the semi-overhead view so I didn't play it too much.
I remember when they brought this into the UA theater I where I worked. I had great fun playing it, and I'm not even into racing games much. I had the SNES version as well. The music was all different from the arcade and included Toyota's "I love what you do for me" tune during the shop screen. And it featured Mickey Thomas instead of Ivan Stewart, but I didn't know who either of them were anyway.
Pat, your commentary and information on all uploads are not only funny but spot on with my youth interaction at arcade. Your Channel is spot on. The day you photo shoped i remember on bob ross pic. With your catch tag.....perfect!
Wow, talk about a throw back. Me and my two brothers would play this and Super Mario endlessly on the Super Nintendo. We still have a copy and a SN to this day and will sometimes throw it on for the nostalgia. last time was a couple months ago haha. The music's blaring through my head right now.
0:18 Yes! This is the NES set we got. Ours came with the gray blaster. Great memories of seeing and playing Super Mario Brothers, for the first time, that day. My father played it for days until he beat it. Of course we played Duck Hunt and the Clay pigeon shooter game. However, those were kinda difficult for my 5 yo self. So it was quickly back to Mario 1 to see how far you can make it by only running at full speed through the obstacles. To this day, when i play a Mario game, it's as fast as possible
That's awesome, I love reading about family bonding over video games. When I met my wife and she knew I was into video games she told me how awesome she was at the original super Mario. So I got the NES out and play the first level in her jaw about dropped with how fast I can make it through LOL maybe that's why she's hated me all these years?
PatManQC, thank you for this. This is still one of my all time favorite games. As always, your channel delivers on the goods. You definitely need to be on a major network. Belee Dat!!!!!
freaking PatmanQC! if anyone deserves UA-cam success it's this guy! love watching content from people that love what they're doing! Thanks again and good luck Patman, never stop kicking ass!!!
I was always happy when I would go to an arcade and see this cabinet. It was also one of my favorite multiplayer games on the NES. I can hear the music in my head just thinking about it.
I spent so many quarters playing this game in the arcades back in my younger days. To be honest, it was a toss up between this and Super Sprint! *PatmanQC* you are a living legend
You're right, it was a tossup for me as well. I might have to give it to off road just for the simple fact that you can use the turbo :-) thank you my friend
I just loved how the game itself was like Ivan Stewart's own version of Super Sprint..but those vehicles founded in the game were pretty excellent..the music were also one of the things why I wanted to listening some arcade musics..and I hopefully wanting to played it only on arcade emulators and would definitely spending for about 1 hour of it..while that I could setting my food and drinks session while playing it..Great video, Mr. Patman..whenever new videos came out..I'm just always here to ready myself for some relaxing retro arcade history like most of my favorites such as Mario Bros., Popeye, Ikari Warriors, Mortal Kombat and many more
I am hooked on your videos sir! History, a touch of comedy, and thorough reviews make for engaging topics. I’m not that big of a gamer anymore but through the 80s into the early 2000s I definitely could be found in my local Arcade!
This was such a huge game for us back in the day, we had the 3-player cabinet in a local arcade and we'd play it all the time. I think Super Sprint will always be my favorite top down racer, but this comes a close second.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I used to play the ST versions of both of them a lot, they were amazing fun to play with friends... heck even way after the day... we'd get stoned and play 3 player super sprint on the ST while the Genesis gathered dust in the corner :D
I always found the top down view of those tracks aestheticly pleasing for some reason. I even tried to draw tracks like em for my micro machines as a kid. :D
the original game boy version of super off road was one of the first game boy games i bought. I loved it and played it a ton. It was slower and plain looking but it was close enough for on the go off road.
I loved this and Super Sprint. The top down view and the free spinning steering wheel are so good. Demolition Derby (I think it's called) is another great game like this.
As a kid I spent countless hours playing this game at the Ca-Nv state line nickel arcade. Not wanting to lose vehicle progress would keep you playing until your bladder threatened to burst. Also, nothing beat saving up some Nitro and stealing a win at the end.
Wipeout and Cliffhanger were very hard tracks. I remember many a time I'd unload on the boost near the finish line just to beat that little gray truck.
Hard driving is one of my all-time favorite racing games! The sit down arcade version was the best!! Hundreds of dollars of quarters I spent on that version!! If I could afford it I'd get that for my home!! As is I still play it on my Sega Nomad
I grew up in a bowling alley my Mom managed. Off Road and Super Sprint are two of my all time favorite arcade games. Something about how you could wheel the hell outta those cars/trucks just made sense to me. 😂
Excellent and comprehensive review as always. To be honest I guess the reason I never was a fan of Super Off Road is because I only played the console versions like NES, Super Nintendo, Genesis and haven't played the Arcade version with a steering wheel and pedals nor have I competed with other players. I should probably give it a shot with Fightcade 2 and see if there's other players online that's interested in the game. My favorites that I play quite often is the arcade version of Outrun, the NES, Genesis and Gameboy versions of R.C. Pro-Am, pretty much any version of Super Sprint, the Arcade and NES versions of Spy Hunter, and there was a neat MSDOS game called Super Speed that I loved playing in the mid 90's. Buggy Run is also a fantastic racing game for the Master System that never came out in America but I got to play it years later via emulation. It reminds me a lot of the upgrade system that Super Off Road has. But it's interesting how racing game developers kept getting inspired and bumping ideas off one another over the years lol 😇
Looking at the commercial for the NES game that you posted, about the 17:00 mark, you can see advertising for Skoal and Budweiser. I don't think I remember this commercial from back in the day.
this is by far my favorite arcade game and one of the best racers ever. I'd rank it second behind the original snes mario kart for best racers pre n64/ps1 era
I played this game so much in the arcades and when I played it on the NES I was so disappointed, the censorship the music wasn’t the same, the feel of the steering wheel can not be replicated on a controller. I played this so much at shakeys pizza as well as super sprint. I still play them to this day on my arcade legends pro, doesn’t have a steering wheel so I use the track ball.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries it’s still around, I went back home in socal (live in houston now) last month and the ones I went to are still there like pico Rivera and Whittier
This is a game I can always go back to for a blast around a few tracks. Amazing seeing all the different versions, most looked pretty good, but for me the Snes version just edges it. Great vid!
did anyone else think the music on one of the snes levels sounded like a reworked seinfeld theme? also did anyone else see the reversal glitch that made the computer cars run tracks backward if you hit them head on in a nitroboost?
Great video Patman. One of my all-time favorite racing games, was "The Great American Cross Country Road Race", for the Commodore 64. I played that game for hours. Did you ever play that game growing up? In fact, I played it the other day, just before you posted this new video. If you have not played it, give it a shot, I believe its available for download still. It's a lot of fun. Take care!
I lived on the same road as Ivan Stewart. I didn't even know about it until after he moved. I would've crapped my pants if I ever met him being a huge fan of this game.
Omg Pole Position,Hard Drivin,Super Sprint....you took me all the way back to my childhood with those. WoW
All classic games
I spent many, many hours as a “yute” playing this in the arcade!!! Hot Damn! You’ve done it again Patman!

this is by far my favorite arcade game and one of the best racers ever. I'd rank it second behind the original snes mario kart for best racers pre n64/ps1 era
Used to play this at a lamppost pizza every weekend when my gramps took me. Those were amazing times.
They still have this at a local arcade. It's been there for 30 plus years lol.
I used to love going to Shakey's pizza
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries it’s still around, I went back home in socal (live in houston now) last month and the ones I went to are still there like pico Rivera and Whittier
Thanks for all the great videos! Keep 'em coming.
Thanks, will do!
This is a game I can always go back to for a blast around a few tracks. Amazing seeing all the different versions, most looked pretty good, but for me the Snes version just edges it. Great vid!
Maybe this is the first game with micro transaction? Great video once again 💯 loved running into this game in the wild as a kid 🤞🏽😁🤞🏽
That could be. If you are counting actually putting money in to continue a game that goes back a lot further
Thanks to show me the "Cruis'n USA off road" for Nintendo 64. Now I need to finish this game!!!
Excellent, have fun
I love this game!! There's a bar called 16 bit with a lot of arcade machines and this is always on the list!! I miss the co-op experience!
Sounds like a great place :-)
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Man you're the best PatMan..I appreciate you being so kind replying to me💯
Hey coolman a Dutch commercial of the game. I love your channel.
I like how some of the ports randomly have super-aggressive MIDI banjo music.
Really fun little arcade racer. My dad loved playing it.
Love your videos!! Always a treat!
This Arcade Racer & SEGA RALLY, was My Favorite Arcade Racing Cabinets.
(ChaseH.Q. is in My Arcade Racing List as Well, Along with Lucky&Wild.)
Chase HQ is one of my favorites
I really appreciate the review for this it was a favorite of mine growing up just wish I had infinite quarters when I was little
Thanks for watching
This had such great control and replay worthiness :)
Oh yes, the controls are fantastic
Awesome video! This is a fun game!
Thanks a lot
Fantastic job on this one! Great stuff!
Thank you! Cheers!
did anyone else think the music on one of the snes levels sounded like a reworked seinfeld theme?
also did anyone else see the reversal glitch that made the computer cars run tracks backward if you hit them head on in a nitroboost?
Great video like always Patman!
Thanks again!
22:29 : "The music and sound effects are really good, and well worth a look."

There's one here in Reno Nv at Press Start arcade/bar... pretty cool game.
Take care!
Thanks. I do recall playing the game on my 64 but don't have many memories from it. I'll have to go back and check it out. Thanks
I lived on the same road as Ivan Stewart. I didn't even know about it until after he moved. I would've crapped my pants if I ever met him being a huge fan of this game.
LOL, that's very cool
