  • RVs and Travel Trailers always have something to work on. It’s just very disappointing that a camper less than 9 months old needs a wall replaced due to inadequate work at the manufacturer.
Sadly, things like this seem to be commonplace in the RV industry. Do you have a story about your camper you’d like to share in the comments?

I made sure to reseal the front cap of our with proflex rv. We also had water damage in the front cap.

Thanks. We’re almost done with it. It’s been a learning process and definitely different than working on a wall in a house.

You’re welcome and thank you so much for watching and commenting. I don’t want to pile on, but we just started filming today on how we’re fixing the AC unit to drain properly and not inside the trailer.

I rebounded the Filon fiberglass sheathing to the(remaining) exterior plywood on a heavily rotted RV by squirting gorilla glue into the voids with a vinyl tube and clamping it with a plate of plywood and an adjustable stick, 2 2x4s sandwiched with C-clamps to brace diagonally against the ground.
All RVs are crap. The best units from the best companies will barely outlast the worst unit built by by the worst crew in any factory, because the design of the edge seals and window gaskets guarantees that water WILL eventually leak into the wall layers. The junction of materials different that expand and contract at different rates is the bane of any manufactured object. The caulking used for RV windows and seam seals is grabby and flexible when new, but any little voids or defects in the edge will trap water and dust, causing an expanding moisture feedback loop of failure.
The more work I do on my RV the more I want to build one myself with better components and meterials.

Dang that’s a lot of useful and helpful information. With this being the first one we’ve ever had I have learned a lot, but there is a lot more I have to learn.
I agree they aren’t built to last. I think it’d be fun building one.

@@CampsiteCruising Gorilla Glue is a pain to work with but it needs water to activate so it’s good for rebonding walls that can’t be disassembled to dry out.
RV stores sell the window bedding (butyl tape) if you need to remove and reinstall windows. Never ever ever use silicone sealant for anything you might need to work on again later. The RV product can be removed with a putty knife and replaced without excessive cussing.

Definitely a learning experience. I always wanted to redo a camper, but I thought it’d be an older one and not a new one. We’ve got most of it fixed, but inexperience means sometimes doing it again to fix what you fixed 😄

You are 100% correct. This was the first one we ever bought. We looked for years and tried to learn as much as possible before buying. However this was a lesson in buyer beware for sure. I learned something from this, even if it cost me money. Hopefully it can help someone else in the future.

      Yeah I know.
Just like changing the subjects for a laugh, from that other thing 😏
      But my Pro TIP.
Get a fan in there. And a regular ole incandescent bulb. It's a trick I learned a millennium ago for boats.
The light bulb will create heat obviously. And the fan simply keeps the air flowing, wet or dry. So that moisture is less likely to hide and accumulate in places like that.
A 60-100 watt bulb. Maybe $10 A YEAR 😂. And a 20 inch box fan on low, even less. BUT IT WORKS DAMN GOOD 👍
And you could probably run them with solar too. But that's my little tip ☺️
And I said a 20 inch box fan because they're pretty cheap, and move a good amount of air.
AND HAVE A MILLION USES, as fans go. But you get the idea 💡

    • @CampsiteCruising
      @CampsiteCruising  Місяць тому +1

@@My-Pal-Hal thanks for the tip! I did run a fan on it for a while to help it dry faster. Didn’t know about the light bulb, but that makes sense. I was able to save the wood. I cleaned and scrubbed everything down.
I resealed the light on the outside and did some water tests on it and didn’t fix anything on the inside until after we had a couple good rains. Hopefully it’s all sealed up now. Almost finished with it, but the work looks pretty novice, so I’m learning what I didn’t do right and redoing those spots.
I also got a dehumidifier for it and keep it running. Learning all the time! I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge on it because that helps me too. Thanks for that!

Yeah, ya just let em run 24/7. Doesn't cost much. And a lot cheaper than the alternative.
Just check everything now and then. And clean the fan if it gets gooked up. I think I've only had one freeze up over time. And I'm sure that could be a fire hazard if it doesn't have a Fuse.
I get the fans with the fuse in the plug. Better safe than sorry 🤗
And Hydrogen Peroxide is Great for mold and mildew.
And, look into "30 Seconds Clean". It's the best and only outdoor, and indoor cleaner you'll ever need for molds, mildews, and slimy green anything. Been using that for a Millennium Too 😂
It's a bleach based cleaner. But has a Surfactant in it that works miracles. And works well diluted well past it's recommendations. AND, hasn't stained or bleached out anything I've ever used it on.
But I'm not, Totally Slow. But I have my moments 😂
      ... Good Luck

      Oh.
And the key with moisture, is keeping it Moving !!!
Dehumidifiers will suck up moisture, but they don't keep it moving. Even the water damage places, will use fans of all kinds to Move The Air. Because even dehumidifiers need that to work well. I'm sure you've seen it before. And why the light bulb works. Because it keeps the WATER, as Humidity 🤣 Always Something isn't it.
      ... take care

Is the camper actually 9 months old? Or is it older but you have only owned it for 9 months? When I owned a trailer it too had an unnoticed leak at one of the clearance lights that went on for years. Had to learn to check ALL roof piercings at least once a year.

    • @CampsiteCruising
      @CampsiteCruising  Місяць тому

Man, that’s a good point. It’s a 22 that we got in May of 23. It was never owned before we got it. So this started around November of 23 this video was filmed in February. So, in my mind it’s 9 months, but to your point it was probably to the dealer early 22-ish at the latest? I know a lot of companies were rushing to meet demand during that two year stretch. So yep, the seals probably had a year in them already. I’ve seen a few more people with the same model from the same year that had the same issue. So I do wonder if it was a cut or design error or we all got unlucky at the same time.
And yes you’re right. Have to check and reseal every year.

Braxton Creek. But to fair to the company as a whole, I love their campers and if I was getting a new one I would look at what they offer. They are not expensive considering, but are definitely in the “budget camper” category.
