Daenerys from Game of Thrones would have been a strong second. Her character arc was similar with Gabrielle, and she too would have had an incredible arc for TV if not for the sudden rush in the final two episodes.
Up to season 4, yes. But then Lucy became pregnant and Gabrielle's arc was thrown out so that Gabby could do the action scenes Xena couldn't. Suddenly Gabrielle was a supersoldier.
I remember watching this when it first aired. When Gabby said "Quiet" I felt a bold change in her. We all remember when Xena talked about the ripple and pebble. Being part of the river...forever changed. Xena was Gabriel's pebble in the river.
I remember when I was a kid downloading the entire soundtrack and walking around singing “ohhh ahh le le ay ya” and my fam looking at me like i was wierd 😂
Another one of my all-time favorites. I remember first watching this episode as a kid and being literally terrified that Velasca was going to kill Gabrielle. But this episode proved that Gabrielle was growing into her own - confident, brave and a bit petty, too, lol. That scene with Xena's sarcophagus always gets me in my feels - the music helps. Joseph LoDuca's compositions on this show really made you feel.
Lucy Lawless wasn't able to do anything in this episode because she was still recovering from her Tonight Show accident. However, if the producers were forced to have several episodes with Gabrielle as queen among the Amazons, I would have gladly watched it. (And as things turned out, Ephiny would have been more loyal and protective towards Gabrielle than Xena.)

Which almost didn't happened since she was at a camping trip when they were contacting her... Imagine that...
Originally, Xena was to be played by Vanessa Angel in the Hercules trilogy of episodes, and killed off at the end because Angel had a prior commitment to the Weird Science series. However, just before scheduled shooting she dropped out due to illness (officially), and since there was no time to recast the producers fell back to trying to get one of the actresses who'd been tested for the role of Queen Hippolyta in the Hercules and the Amazons movie: Roma Downey, Lucy Lawless, Elizabeth Hurley and Melinda Clarke. Lucy was the only one "free", and the legend was born.
Half right, Vanessa Angel dropped out as Xena right before shooting on the Xena episodes of Hercules was to the start. But this at the height of US pilot season in LA, which meant no actresses were interested in flying to New Zealand for a 3 part gig over staying in the US and getting a pilot picked up that went to series. So no American actresses would make the trip (including Melinda Clarke) and they had worked with Lucy before on other Hercules movies and episodes so they tracked her down (she was camping at the time) and offered it to her then a handful of days later she was being fitted for the Hercules episodes.
Xena died from being hit by a trap that was set with a giant log and it hit her in the head but she protected Gabrielle and then told her where this healer that she knew was but it was too late as the healer said there was nothing he could do. That previous episode digs into Xena's past way before she met Gabrielle and how she became the way she did before walking the path of redemption.
and to think those powerful amazons worshipped a useless God, artemis... God, was she pathetic x'D Poseidon is still the worst God in the series tho, he got negged by Xena for being way too slow x'D

Sears, said that one of the possibilities of ending the series was Gabrielle returning to the Amazons after Xena's death, writing the Xena Scrolls with the ghost of the Warrior Princess standing admiringly behind her. Of course, he was one of the few members of the X:WP creative crew who gave a flying fig about Gabrielle.
Well, you knew Velasca wasn't going to let that go. And besides, she challenged Queen Melosa to a duel and won, so just give her the mask of Queen. Gabrielle didn't have what it took to be the queen anyway.
Velasca may have been a mediocre fighter. Gabrielle probably could have beaten her if the fighting was confined to chobos or unarmed; and if Velasca insisted on something deadly like swords Gabriele could call on Ephiny as her champion. Velasca should have challenged Gabrielle right then and there if she was confident enough that she could beat Gabrielle. Instead, when Gabrielle cleverly exposed Velasca's real desires and fears (V taking the knife first and not the Queen's Mask), Velasca turned heel and stormed off. She obviously wasn't prepared to fight either Gabrielle or any champion Gabrielle might offer. We aren't sure about what happened between Melosa and Velasca. According to this episode's writer (Steven L Sears) there was no formal challenge to Melosa; Velasca essentially just encountered Melosa alone near the village and they had at it. So, the Amazon Council ruled that it was "fair combat" and not just a matter of Velasca stabbing Melosa in the back or something similar. Even if there had been a formal challenge, I'd imagine that Melosa's heart would not be in it and so a ruthless and heartless Velasca would have the advantage.
